#LootCrate Review: July 2015

Can Loot Crate keep up its successful run with July 2015's Heroes2? Read on to find out!

Review by Matt Cummings

The subscription box Loot Crate has amassed a stellar run recently, having delivered exceptional boxes in March, April, May, and June. But potential problems threaten subscriber support, as the company tries a new upgrade plan that could see their mainstay - the shirt - available only in higher-priced boxes. And while I like July's theme of HEROES 2, the lack of a shirt is a lingering concern.

We've noticed that USPS and other carriers are doing a better job delivering the boxes, as this one is missing the usual dents and scratches that plagued earlier deliveries.

Upon cracking the case, we see a neat Batman figure but no t-shirt, a real bummer but one almost made up by what looks like a sweet Batman figure. Last month's Tron-inspired Optimus Prime was perhaps one of its best ever, and I was hoping this month for a worthy opponent. Its lack of appearance is definitely felt here.

First up is a Star Trek air freshener in the form of the Vulcan greeting/goodbye of "Live Long and Prosper." Being a Trekker, I appreciate any month that includes a little love.

I wasn't as impressed with the Legend of Zelda wrist band, but I could see where fans of the game would be thrilled. It's something you can get at Hot Topic for a couple of bucks, and will probably get tossed in to an eBay lot. Still, add a fun sword and a costume and this would look great.

One of the best items this month is this Batman multi-tool. As you can see in follow-up images, it contains two screwdrivers, a bottle opener, and a key chain. Although it's a little big to fit in my pocket, I'll definitely be hanging it on my my fridge. It's made of high-quality metal, which I hope means many rounds of The Dark Knight assisting me as I go into Beer Battle!

This is a very small (and I mean small, and oddly shaped) Wonder Woman 1940's era poster. It looks fabulous, but again at just 10.5"x9.5 (yes, an odd size to be sure), there's no standard frame that will accommodate it. I'll have to research framing options, but it will most likely include some sort of matting. But overall, it's a keeper.

One of the best books ever added to a Loot Crate, The League of Regrettable Superheroes chronicles the origins of several poorly-conceived heroes. My favorites include Thunderbunny and Skateman. Just awful, but the book is a fun read, and this edition appears to be a Loot Crate exclusive.

Brawlhalla is a free-to-play online game that subscribers can various skins, weapons, and characters using the free code on the back. I didn't have time to check it out, but some should find the free upgrades to be at least mildly entertaining.

Although the image is hard to pick out, this month's pin shows The Dark Knight in his classic position high above the city of Gotham. It's clearly the best pin we've gotten from them in quite awhile, and it will find a place of honor among my other flair. Yes, I did just throw in an Office Space reference.

This month's HEROES 2 theme is also duplicated inside the pages of Loot Crate Magazine #24. There's terrific articles that include an interview with Director John Schnepp, who recently finished the documentary The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? And as always, we get to see what's in the Mega Crate - which goes to one lucky subscriber - and the Mini Mega, which is handed out to 20 others. Some lucky subscriber is taking home a Mega Crate that includes a Tomb Raider-inspired Xbox One, an HTC One M9 smartphone, Star Wars R2-D2 Sixth Scale Figure from Sideshow Collectibles, and several other very cool items. Mini Mega winners receive a Mini Batman Bat-Signal and a Justice League Superman 3D Puzzle. Hey guys, where's my prize?

The next set of images reveal the centerpiece of July's Crate: a QPop figurine of Batman in his 1960's television-era costume. He looks a little young (not a big deal), but the construction is top-notch, although some images might not suggest that. Believe me, once you open this bad boy you'll be pleasantly surprised.

But what takes this to another level is Loot's shipping box, which eventually forms into a building (WHAT?!) that you can place alongside The Detective. That. Is. Awesome!! I've always hated the idea of throwing away old Loot boxes, as they could have merged with the collection in some way, rather than rot in a landfill somewhere. Apparently someone has been entering my bed chamber to listen in on my dreams. Check out these images, as well as the very simple directions. Well played.

In the end, July 2015's Loot Crate celebrates the HEROES 2 theme quite well, with a collection of good- to high-quality gear, including a terrific Batman figurine. I'm disappointed that the shirt was apparently replaced for the figurine, and would have traded all of the other items in the box for just the figure and a shirt only. Loot's decision to possibly move the t-shirts to a higher-priced box is a real concern. If they do so and the items they replace it with aren't as good, I will have to consider other options, which does not include upgrading to the higher-priced box.

Will Seth Gordon Direct Dwayne Johnson In The Baywatch Film?

Variety is reporting that Seth Gordon is in negotiations to direct Dwayne Johnson in Paramount’s bigscreen adaptation of the TV series “Baywatch.”

Johnson is attached to star and will produce along with his partner Dany Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions banner along with Montecito Pictures producing along with Beau Flynn.

Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz, Greg Bonnan will exec produce.

While plot details are currently vague, sources close to the project have said the studio wants to go the comedic route for the project.

Paramount has been trying to get the right ingredients in place in order to move forward with the film, and Gordon is the sort of director the studio has been looking to over the years. Gordon’s hit vulgar comedies like “Horrible Bosses” and “Identity Theft” have made him a popular director at the studios amid moviegoers’ craving for R-rated comedies. Paramount would hope for similar results.

Damian Shannon & Mark Swift wrote the latest draft of the script.

Appear In #jemandtheholograms Movie

Universal Pictures is giving “Jem and the Holograms” fans a chance to appear in the upcoming teen-musical fantasy, with winners selected based on “Jem”-inspired videos posted on social channels.

The studio launched the digital casting call at VidCon, the annual digital-video confab taking place this week in Anaheim, angling to attract YouTube stars to the contest. “Jem and the Holograms,” based on the ’80s animated TV series, is about a small-town girl who becomes a singing superstar.

The goal: to produce a groundswell of user-generated content about “Jem” ahead of the movie’s Oct. 23 premiere, as effectively free publicity.

Universal’s Star in Jem” contest is inviting anyone to post multiple videos of themselves singing or dancing to one of the songs from the movie (after downloading music from the site). For actors, the studio is looking for testimonials addressed to the fictional Jem about “how she has given you courage to be yourself.”

Universal also is partnering with Defy Media’s Clevver entertainment digital network on a video campaign promoting the film. That will comprise interviews with top YouTube talent at VidCon about how they rose from obscurity to Internet stardom (i.e., just like Jem).

In addition, Universal is sponsoring “The Prom” at VidCon on Saturday night. The event will include “Jem and the Holograms” giveaways, a makeup artist, photo booth and branded beach balls and will feature a music video from the pic.

Should The Terminator Franchise Be Terminated?

Soft returns for the movie and release dates set for two sequels confound Paramount and Skydance as "bubble" movies — not flops, not quite megahits — require tough decisions: "Sometimes you are left scratching your head."

He'll be back. Or will he? In September 2014, David Ellison's Skydance Productions and Paramount boldly dated the next two installments in the rebooted Terminator franchise for 2017 and 2018, even though the first film in the planned trilogy, Terminator: Genisys, was 10 months from opening.

But now Genisys, which cost $155 million to produce and tens of millions more to market, is underperforming at the box office -- it had earned only $80.6 million domestically and nearly $200 million overseas as of July 19 -- underscoring the tough decisions franchise-mad studios face with what might be called "bubble" movies, decent performers whose returns don't trigger an automatic sequel but whose backers aren't quite ready to give up. Terminator could join Pacific Rim, Godzilla, Snow White and the Huntsman and Jack Reacher as recent bubble movies that scored sequels. On the other hand, franchise plays Prometheus, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader did fine but have not scored a follow-up green light.

"Sometimes you are left scratching your head," says Rentrak box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "If a movie doesn't kill at the box office, why move ahead? Studios will build franchises sometimes without the blessing of the audience."

Terminator: Genisys presents a tricky conundrum. Ellison has been especially enthusiastic about Terminator (Skydance paid $20 million for rights) and made the trilogy a priority. But opening over the July 4 holiday, the fifth film in the franchise failed to lure its target demo of younger males. Worse, critics attacked director Alan Taylor's convoluted storyline and the upending of previous Terminator mythology. "There is no question that the market was affected by reviews, which nicked early word of mouth," Paramount vice chair Rob Moore said after its opening weekend. The film has yet to open in China, where it launches Aug. 23, but without a muscular performance there, Genisys might top out at $375 million to $400 million worldwide -- not an outright flop but not enough to quell nerves at Paramount.

The studio and Skydance declined to comment on the status of the Terminator sequels or a television spinoff that was announced. But one Paramount source admits the planned follow-ups aren't a given: "We will definitely need to see the holds globally to confirm that people like the film." Complicating matters, Skydance didn't cast any well-known movie stars in Genisys other than Arnold Schwarzenegger, 67, so the sequel probably would need to add a proven draw or rely again on Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke and Jai Courtney.

"If they are going to make another one, something has to change," says MKM Partners analyst Eric Handler. "You either have to make a better film or make it cheaper. They tried to bring in elements of the first film, but it didn't work. It's going to be very difficult. They are going to have to cater to the international market."

Those foreign grosses, which now account for two-thirds of studio tentpole returns, increasingly are cited as key in determining whether a bubble movie is sequel-worthy. For instance, 2013's Pacific Rim, made for $190 million, was considered a disappointment in the U.S. with $101 million but grossed three times as much overseas and is getting a sequel. Still, reliance on international performance is somewhat problematic because studios see a smaller cut of the box office than they do from U.S. theaters. Perhaps for that reason, insiders say that Legendary Entertainment, which is fully financing Pacific Rim 2, will spend less on the sequel, due Aug. 14, 2017, via Universal.

The danger, of course, is that a studio abandons a franchise too soon, leaving millions on the table. Universal's Fast & Furious movies faced extinction after the fourth installment failed to grow, but the decision to make a fifth film led to a revitalized property and, eventually, this summer's $1.5 billion-grossing Furious 7 (at least two more Fast movies are planned).

Ellison and Skydance have their own experience with a rebooted franchise in Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible, whose fourth film, 2011's Ghost Protocol, re-energized the series with $694 million globally. They will test the strength of the Mission franchise when Rogue Nation hits theaters July 31. Fox faces a similar test with its Aug. 7 reboot of Fantastic Four, whose sequel already has been dated for 2017.

"Any movie that can be sequelized is money in the bank," notes Dergarabedian. The tough part, of course, is knowing when to hit the terminate button.

Ridley Scott To Direct The Cartel

Just published in June, 'The Cartel' offers a fictional take on the notorious Sinaloa drug boss whose daring July 18 escape from a Mexican prison dominated international news headlines.

Fox and Ridley Scott are teaming up to adapt The Cartel, Don Winslow's much-heralded novel that has parallels to the real-life escape of drug lord El Chapo.

Scott will direct the movie and produce with his Scott Free Films president Michael Schaefer. Shane Salerno will write the script and also produce via his shingle, Story Factory.

The movie deal went down Wednesday night after intense interest from the major studios and producers. Execs and observers had been eyeing the project not just for the ripped-from-the-headlines similarities but also for the acclaimed reviews of the book that are praising it as a south-of-the-border version of The Godfather. Steve Asbell will oversee the project for the studio.

The deal also includes Fox's pick up of the movie rights to Winslow's novel, The Power of the Dog, which is Cartel's precursor.

Winslow couldn’t have timed the publication of the book any better.

The July 18 escape of notorious Sinoloa drug cartel boss Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán from a Mexican prison came less than a month after his novel, which fictionalizes Guzman’s story, went on sale.

Cartel tells the intertwined story of Art Keller and Adan Berrera, friends whose paths diverged when Keller went to work for DEA and Berrera joined the Sonora drug cartel. Roughly covering the years from 2004-2014, its a follow up to his 2006 bestseller, The Power of the Dog, which traced the early years of the drug war.

Winslow did extensive research on El Chapo for the novel, spending more than a decade learning about him. Cartel features a fictional version of Guzman’s first prison escape in 2001, when he supposedly hid in a laundry cart to get out.

Since the escape, Winslow has been appearing on news programs and blogging about the escape.

Scott is prepping his latest, The Martian, which stars Matt Damon, for a fall release. He previously took on the cartel culture with 2013's The Counselor.

Will #BrieLarson Join Kong: Skull Island?

Deadline is reporting Brie Larson is in talks to play the female lead in Legendary Pictures’ Kong: Skull Island. She will join Tom Hiddleston, who was set some time ago. Legendary is actively setting the two other male leads after the exit of both Michael Keaton and JK Simmons. One actor they are courting hard for one of those roles is Russell Crowe, but it won’t be clear whether or not that happens until the next script draft comes in.

Legendary has Jordan Vogt-Roberts directing a script by John Gatins and Max Borenstein, and they are eyeing a production start of late year or early 2016. The film will be released by Universal Pictures on March 10, 2017, with a Imax 3D a big part of the release plan. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni produce with Mary Parent, with Alex Garcia and Eric McLeod exec producing. Kong: Skull Island will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the iconic ape as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Clearly it wasn’t lost on anyone that Peter Jackson’s King Kong had its best moments on Skull Island, depicted as a scary place. Wannasee has been high on this since Legendary revealed the project at San Diego Comic-Con awhile back.

For Larson, this role is a big coup. She co-starred in the Judd Apatow-directed Trainwreck with Amy Schumer and Bill Hader, and she next stars with William H. Macy and Joan Allen in Room, the Lenny Abrahamson-directed adaptation of the Emma Donoghue novel about a mother (Larson) and her son who are trapped in a shed, and the love between them that keeps them going. A24 is releasing the film for awards season and it is expected to surface in the fall festival circuit. Larson just wrapped the Ben Wheatley-directed Free Fire, which is exec produced by Martin Scorsese.

THE LONGEST RIDE Blu-ray Review

Based on the bestselling novel by master storyteller Sparks, THE LONGEST RIDE centers on the star-crossed love affair between Luke, a former champion bull rider looking to make a comeback, and Sophia, a college student who is about to embark upon her dream job in New York City’s art world. As conflicting paths and ideals test their relationship, Sophia and Luke make an unexpected connection with Ira, whose memories of his own decades-long romance with his beloved wife deeply inspire the young couple. Spanning generations and two intertwining love stories, THE LONGEST RIDE explores the challenges and infinite rewards of enduring love.

Well, isn't Scott Eastwood just a rugged, squinty, sensitive, handsome drink of water? He isn't that bad an actor either - very dynamic and athletic while bull-riding and quietly choked when essentially admitting his lack of other options, "It's my life..." It's a schmaltzy moment, but he grounds it.

Britt Robertson was precious in "Dan In Real Life" and arguably the best part of "Delivery Man," but her spirit is too wild and outgoing for "the boring one" in the sorority house, and this Regular Girl role requires her to tone down that spirit, making her performance...well, boring. Methinks brunette Melissa Benoist more fits the type of the straight-laced lead, and Robertson would have been better as the bubbly partygirl friend.

The rest of the script is classic Sparks: new, uncertain relationship is fortified by the flashback story of an older relationship that stands the test of time. Ira and Ruth's love story - complicated by infertility and lack of faith - is infinitely more interesting than Sophia and Luke's banal first date small talk about nail polish. Oona Chaplin has a great period face, and Jack Huston is bashfully devoted.

The art auction twist is a nice denouement, but overall, the movie is an overlong, forgettable Sparks joint.

THE LONGEST RIDE Blu-ray™ comes packed with 45 minutes of extra features that will take you further into the film’s two central love stories. Join Eastwood on the ranch as he learns from the world’s best bull riders to control the beasts and learn more about the production with audio commentary from director George Tillman, Jr. and star Oona Chaplin.

Chloë Grace Moretz Joins #Zac Efron & @Sethrogen In #Neighbors2

Chloë Grace Moretz is joining Zac Efron and Seth Rogen in Universal’s sequel to their 2014 hit “Neighbors.”

Besides Efron and Rogen, Rose Byrne is on board to return, with director Nicholas Stoller also coming back. The original was a surprise hit with $269 million in worldwide grosses.

The original revolved around a couple whose lives are turned upside-down after declaring war on the fraternity that moved in next door. The sequel’s plot is unknown, as well as the character Moretz will be playing.

Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver will produce under their Point Grey Pictures banner. Andrew Jay Cohen and Brendan O’Brien will serve as executive producers alongside Good Universe’s Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake. Writers include Cohen, O’Brien, Rogen, Stoller and Goldberg.

Moretz has made a career out of doing darker, edgier roles such as Hit Girl in the “Kick Ass” franchise and “The Equalizer.” “Neighbors 2″ will mark the first comedy for the rising star.

She was last seen in “Laggies” opposite Keira Knightley and can be seen next in “Dark Places” with Charlize Theron and Sony’s “The Fifth Wave.”

The pic will bow on May 13, 2016.

Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival. The epic adventure stars Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Everest is directed by Baltasar Kormákur (2 Guns, Contraband) and produced by Working Title Films’ Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, Cross Creek Pictures’ Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson, as well as Nicky Kentish Barnes and Kormákur.

Universal Pictures and Cross Creek Pictures’ presentation of Everest—in association with Walden Media—is adapted for the screen by William Nicholson (Gladiator) and Oscar® winner Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire).

The film was shot on location in Nepal on the foothills of Everest, the Italian Alps and at Cinecittà Studios in Rome and Pinewood Studios in the U.K. Universal will distribute Everest worldwide.
