Star Tours Getting an Updated Look

Star Tours Getting an Updated Look To Reopen in 2011

This has been a long time coming. As a Child I really enjoyed the ride and to this day every time I go to Disneyland I have to ride Star Tours. After watching The Phantom Menace, I thought to myself that would be Really cool if they updated Star Tours with Pod Racing and Look what Happened.
I am heading down to Disneyland in October so I better get one last ride on Star Tours.
Johnny Depp is a tough act to follow, so Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo brought in the heavy artillery today to announce plans to update the Star Tours attraction at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim and Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Fla.

Radulo deadpanned that he had some "bad news" for the Disneyphiles attending the D23 Expo -- Star Tours would close in Oct 2010. On cue, Stormtroopers marched on stage as the martial sound of John Williams' "Imperial March" played. Darth Vader appeared on the giant screen overhead, and intoned, "The Emperor is most displeased with plans to close Star Tours."

Rasulo said Star Tours would reopen on 2011 as a 3-D simulation that, among other facets of the ride, re-creates the pod-racing scene from "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace." The audience donned 3D glasses to watch a sequence, in which the space-age vehicles veer through canyons, across the flats and speed into the arena on Tatooine.

"If that doesn't fire you up," Rasulo said. "You're in the wrong meeting."

At a press conference after the presentation, Rasulo said there would be physical changes to the ride -- although he offered few additional details. He said "Star Wars" creator George Lucas has been involved in every aspect of the attraction and the storytelling.

"Ever since we did our original Star Tours attraction with George, the relationship with Imagineering has been very, very close," Rasulo said. "We strive for authenticity in everything we do. This is a Lucas idea, this is Lucas storytelling, interpreted by Imagineering."

The first Star Tours attraction opened at Disneyland in January 1987, and is believed to have been the first to adapt flight-simulator technologies for a theme park show. In it, visitors board a Starspeeder 3000 piloted by an android, careen through a giant frozen comet and join an intergalactic dogfight between the Rebel Alliance and the evil Empire. Yoda was not in the sequence shown, but last year Frank Oz, the voice of the diminutive green Jedi, told the Hero Complex that he had recorded new dialogue for the ride upgrade.

Fringe Coming with Something New in Season Two

Fringe Coming with Something New in Season Two
Fringe is on its way back from that alternate reality, and we've got a few cool tidbits to share with you as we get ready for the second season of Fox's ubercool sci-fi procedural.

For starters, Fox sent along this mysterious paper with its second-season premiere screener for the sci-fi series, which returns next Thursday at 9 p.m. Check out the close-up below for the message it contains. (Possible spoiler ahead!) What could it mean??

Executive producers J.J. Abrams, Jeff Pinkner, Joel Wyman and Akiva Goldsman, meanwhile, promise that the second season will build on the tantalizing promise of the first:

"As we said last year, Fringe is a procedural, but unlike most procedurals, it's driven by character. Last season we met Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv), Walter Bishop (John Noble) and Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) as well as the characters who support them while they tackle insane problems. And we discovered that at least some of the problems they face were put in motion by the work of Walter and his former lab mate, William Bell (guest star Leonard Nimoy), who in an alternate reality occupies an office in the (still standing) World Trade Center.

This year, the problems of Olivia and the Bishops face will worsen and become more personal."

Zachary Levi and Mandy Moore Join The Cast of Disney's Rapunzel

Zachary Levi and Mandy Moore Join The Cast of Disney's Rapunzel
Mandy Moore is Rapunzel – though she’ll be relieved that she won’t have to grow her hair.

The 25 year-old singer/actress will lend her voice to Disney’s 3D retelling of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale, about a princess who is imprisoned in a tall tower, and escapes after she grows her golden hair to extraordinary lengths.

Disney’s animated tale will pick up Rapunzel’s story after she escapes from the tower, as she goes on the run from her evil captor, accompanied by a roguish bandit (voiced by Chuck star, Zachary Levi). We’re just guessing here, but we imagine that the two will fall in love somewhere along the way.

Rapunzel is something of a pet project for Disney chief, John Lasseter. Disney had been working on a new film called Rapunzel Unleashed for a while, but had yielded no results. So, when Lasseter came on board in 2006, he started from scratch, and Rapunzel is the result.

Bryan Howard and Nathan Greno will direct the movie, which is being primed for a release late in 2010. Alan Menken, the genius behind the Beauty & The Beast score and most of Disney's '90s hits, will write the music for what could be, should be, a good old-fashioned Disney musical, with some new-fangled 3D bells and whistles.

Details on "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"

Details on "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"
This Most have been amazing to see Johnny Depp come out all dressed up as Jack Sparrow. This will be one of those I wish I was there moment.
Depp was welcomed with raucous applause as he sailed onstage in a pirate ship dressed as Capt. Jack Sparrow. He staggered about and embraced Cook, who announced that "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" would be released in the summer of 2011. Depp will also play Tonto in a big-screen adaptation of "The Lone Ranger," Cook said.
Burton showed footage from his 3-D take on "Alice in Wonderland," which stars Depp as the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen.

"I've always loved the imagery" of the Lewis Carroll story, Burton said, and the opportunity to tell it in 3-D seemed "trippy and great."

Cook announced another Burton-Disney project: The studio will release a feature-length version of Burton's animated short film, "Frankenweenie."

Cars 2 Story Revealed

Cars 2 Story Revealed
The story sees Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), his pit team and new pit boss Mater head around the world for the Race of Champions, to take place in five different countries and involve the champions of different disciplines like Formula One and rally driving. First up is a race in Tokyo, starting at Mount Fuji and heading downtown; then there's a German race through the Black Forest; then "Porto Corsa" in Italy, which is based partly on the Monte Carlo Grand Prix; then a 24-hour race around Paris (so somewhat like Le Mans then) and finally a thrilling climax in London, approaching Buckingham Palace (where the guards appear to be Land Rovers).

But all this racing is not the only focus. Mater, who we know from the series of cartoon shorts Mater's Tall Tales (more on that in our blog in a minute) is prone to exaggeration, gets involved in a "Hitchcockian" case of mistaken identity, saves the life of a British secret agent called Finn McMissile (who looks a heck of a lot like an Aston Martin) and becomes embroiled in a huge spy thriller. Only no-one believes him. That too comes to a head at Buckingham Palace.

Along the way there are towtruck-abroad pictures to be taken at the Oktoberfest in Germany (where Mater wears "Materhosen") and harassing the aforementioned Palace Guards.

Cars 2 is being directed by Ratatouille producer Brad Lewis in his Pixar-directing debut. We're told that all the familiar voices will be returning, but we weren't told who would be voicing Finn McMissile. Still, if the studio aren't in talks with one of the former Bonds, we'd be amazed.

News From Disney's D23 Convention

News From Disney's D23 Convention
I wish I was done there right now hang out with Mickey Mouse and friends. But work calls. So
for all of us who could not attend here is a little news for you on the first day of the convention.

In his opening address at the first annual Disney fan convention, Iger's brief Marvel-related comments offered promise for the merger of the two behemoths. At a press conference later in the afternoon, Iger expanded on Disney's plans for Marvel and respect for the legacy they've already established.

1) Marvel stays Marvel. Paying homage to "The Mouse"'s tendency to water down material for its family audience, Iger addressed the big worry. "There will be no Disneyfication of Marvel," he said in a press conference. He added that Marvel will continue to work independently. "We plan to keep Marvel as an entity and to respect both the talent that is there, working as one, and also respect what Marvel is and what the essence of Marvel is."

2) It's all about story and character. Twice in his address, Iger referred to the characters and storytelling in the Marvel universe. Later, he added that the studio behind Captain Jack Sparrow and Donald Duck recognizes good fictional talent when they see it. "It's a business we're very familiar with," Iger said. "Well-known characters and weird stories and a product that transcends gender and age and geographic territories."

3) For now, no Tony Stark's Haunted Mansion. During his morning address, Iger touted the possibilities of Disney's global resources to expand and tie in with Marvel. Later, he specified that Disney will respect previous Marvel deals. For example, Universal theme parks currently run Marvel-themed rides. Also, studios like Fox and Sony still distribute franchises like X-Men and Spider-Man, respectively. "There are also some legacy agreements that Marvel has in a variety of ways, to the theme park with Universal, to the distribution of the live-action films," Iger said. "So until some of these things work their course, or until we get a better sense when the deal closes, there isn't much planning that can be done until we reach an agreement."

4) Pixar is paving the way for Marvel. Remember when Disney thought they could do without Pixar? They were going to make their own version of Toy Story 3 and everything. Then they realized that only Pixar is Pixar. Well, same with Marvel. Iger even brought in John Lasseter to help him make the case to Marvel. "There is a whole culture attached that was a huge part of their success, and I didn't want to do anything that messed with that culture," Iger said. "I had John Lasseter [talk to Marvel] with me and then without me, so that he could talk to them more about Disney. He gave them some perspective on that, and it was very positive."

5) As Hannah Montana says, "It's the best of both worlds." Rather than harp on potential conflicts, edgy subtext vs. lucrative merchandising, etc., Iger focused on the potential for pooling Marvel and Disney resources. They already travel the same ground in creating story and characters for movies, television, literature and more. "When you look at it as a part of the Walt Disney Co., the presence of Marvel is virtually in everything that we're in," Iger said. "You can expect that over time, that's what you will see. We became impressed with the talent of Marvel as we got to know them better."

A-Team's Murdock role offered to 'District 9' Star Sharlto Copley

A-Team's Murdock role offered to 'District 9' Star Sharlto Copley
Now it seems, they might have finally chosen the man who who play H.M “Howling Mad” Murdock… District 9’s Sharlto Copley?

According to an inside source of BlackFilm.com, he’s exclusively discovered who may be playing Murdock in The A-Team, rounding out the cast of the titular team of soldiers of fortune.

According to the source, Copley has been offered the role but there’s no confirmation yet as to whether or not he’s accepted. How can he not though - this is chance to go forward as a star actor after just one performance. I thought he did great in District 9 and I’m all for him playing this role as well.

They do resemble each other pretty good. And this would be a great chance for him to go down and do a main stream movie, that everyone has been waiting to get made into a film.

Why would you turn down such a great role, with a cast that they have lined up for this movie. I would only hope that he would except this role.

Whosoever in charge of casting is sure paying attention to this year’s popular summer films and upcoming actors.Bradley Cooper finally hit it mainstream with his lead role in one of the year’s best comedies, The Hangover, and the first-time-actor Sharlto Copley was of course the star of the very cool District 9.

DC Entertainment Coming At You

DC Entertainment Coming At You
What Does Warner Brothers and DC Comics do after hearing the news about Disney and Marvel teaming up? They create DC Entertainment to rival that of Marvel.
Warner Bros. has restructured DC Comics as a new company, dubbed DC Entertainment Inc., and tapped Warner Premiere topper Diane Nelson as its chief.

Warner said the revamp is designed to make better use of DC's massive library of characters. Studio made the announcement Wednesday following months of speculation that a revamping was coming.

Of the DC properties, Warner has scored the greatest success from the "Batman" franchise. Upcoming pics based on DC characters include "Jonah Hex," which is in post-production, and "Green Lantern," due to start production next year.

"DC Comics and its super hero characters are truly touchstones of popular culture, and the formation of DC Entertainment is a major step in our company's efforts to realize the full potential of this incredible wellspring of creative properties," said Warner Bros. chairman Barry Meyer in a statement.

"Diane knows our studio as a creative executive, a marketer and a senior manager, and this varied background will help her effectively and creatively integrate the DC brand and properties across all our businesses," Meyer said. "We're also thrilled that Paul will remain involved with DC and we'll be able to tap his expertise to help us reach our goals for this new business."

Here comes " The Hobbit " Rings Lawsuit Settled

Here comes " The Hobbit " Lord Of The Rings Lawsuit Settled

The Tolkien Trust, New Line and HarperCollins have settled a suit by the trust over the gross profit participation of JRR Tolkien's heirs from “The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Terms of the settlement, announced Tuesday, were confidential.

The case had been set to go to trial on Oct. 19 in Los Angeles Superior Court. The trust said Tuesday that the settlement will allow New Line's two films based on Tolkien's "The Hobbit" to go forward.

Shooting is expected to start on the pics next year with Guillermo Del Toro directing.

The Tolkien Trust and HarperCollins filed the suit in February 2008, alleging New Line had failed to pay at least $220 million to members of the trust. The plaintiffs had asserted that under a 1969 contract, the trust and other plaintiffs are entitled to 7.5% of gross receipts from the films and related products, minus certain costs.

The plaintiff has also sought a declaration from the court that the plaintiffs could terminate any further rights New Line had to the Tolkien works under the agreements -- including "The Hobbit," which is being produced by Peter Jackson, director of the "Rings" trilogy, and Fran Walsh for New Line and MGM. The films are expected to be released in late 2011 and 2012.

"We are pleased to put this litigation behind us," said Alan Horn, president of New Line parent Warner Bros. "We all look foward to a mutually productive and beneficial relationship in the future."

Warner Bros. has domestic rights to “The Hobbit” films and MGM has international rights.

Bonnie E. Eskenazi, an attorney for the Tolkien trust, told Daily Variety that settlement talks had been ongoing in recent months as the trial date approached. She also said the plaintiffs are “vindicated and completely satisfied” with the settlement.

“This will enhance the trust’s ability to support more than 100 charities throughout the world,” she added. Those include Save the Children Fund, the Darfur Appeal, Asia Earthquake Appeal and the World Cancer Research Foundation.

MMA Fighter Gina Carano to Star In “Knockout”

Gina Carano to Star In “Knockout” first action movie From Steven Soderbergh

I would pay good money just to Gina Carano in anything. Coming off her first MMA lost to Cyborg. Seems like she maybe going into a different direction. Once the star of the Hit show American Gladiators, she then made the move to MMA and became a huge success story and now she throws herself her into acting. Which is only fitting.

Steven Soderbergh is getting ready to tackle his first action movie.

Soderbergh is partnering with Relativity for “Knockout,” a female spy thriller written by Lem Dobbs that will star mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano.

Soderbergh will produce the pic with his producing partner Gregory Jacobs along with Relativity’s Ryan Kavanaugh. Relativity's Tucker Tooley will serve as executive producer. Production is slated to begin in February.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, the story is described as being in the vein of “The Bourne Identity.”

UFC Champ Rampage Is Set to Play BA Baracus

UFC Champ Rampage Is Set to Play BA Baracus In the New A-Team Movie.

Not sure if any one can fill Mr. T's Shoes on this one. I have been a huge UFC fan for a long time and have seen Rampage (Quinton Jackson ) on the Reality show The Ultimate Fighter. He has a great Personality from what you get from the shows and from his interviews, he can talk some shit. And you never know He may also have some acting skills. Looks like we are going to fined out if he does have those skills.

Hiring UFC star and MMA Fighter is all the rage now. With Keith Jardine Staring in The Gamer, Randy Couture and Antonio Nogueria.
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship world light heavyweight champion Quinton (Rampage) Jackson is in Vancouver to star as BA Baracus in an upcoming movie version of The A-Team.

Jackson has been removed from the UFC 107 card where he was set to face Sugar Rashad Evans in an Ultimate Fighter finale showdown, so he can appear in the film. He was spotted on Robson Street Friday afternoon, signing autographs for fans.

Jackson will star as a coach on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter reality series on Spike TV starting September 19, in which he and Sugar Rashad Evans coach opposing teams of heavyweight MMA wannabes, including former NFL football players and YouTube internet streetfighter Kimbo Slice.

UFC President Dana White told reporters ahead of UFC 102 last week in Portland Oregon that he "hated" it when fighters decided to branch out into film careers.

Only days after signing to star in the 3D action pic "Drive Angry," Nicolas Cage is satiating his appetite with "The Hungry Rabbit Jumps," a thriller that Roger Donaldson has boarded to direct for Tobey Maguire's Maguire Entertainment and Endgame.

The Robert Tannen-written script, which Endgame picked up last year, centers on a man whose wife is the victim of a brutal crime. He subsequently becomes entangled with an underground vigilante organization.

Maguire, who is not acting in the production, is producing with Maguire Entertainment's Jenno Topping. Jim Stern produces for Endgame, which is financing. Ram Bergman is also producing.

Star Wars Live Action Show News

Star Wars Live Action Show News

I can not wait for this show to actually happen and to find out what universe and time Uncle George is going to take us.
Steve Sansweet officially acknowledged the Live Action TV series and gave a rough timetable and hinted strongly at a bit of casting news (though the hint will make it constitute as rumour at best).

First: Pre-production on the show will be starting soon and go through until the new year. The writers have been working for a while and, according to Sansweet, no one knows anything about the story for sure except George Lucas, Rick McCallum and the writers.

He also gave 2012 as a reasonably firm date for seeing the project on the air. It is a one hour format drama show and will air weekly.

As far as the casting news. An audience member asked about Daniel Logan (who portrayed Boba Fett in Attack of the Clones) and his possible participation in the show reprising his role. Sansweet remained cryptic, reminded everyone that no major casting deals have been made with anyone but said (and I quote), "A couple of years ago Rick McCallum said that he would consider it, and I would expect news from Daniel's camp in the not-too-distant future." He didn't say what that news would be, but it seemed to me to insinuate that he was the front runner for the part. Which would please me.
