Movie Review: #Snowden

The story of Snowden is fascinating - this one isn't.

Review by Matt Cummings

If the film documentary CitizenFour brilliantly raised fear of Big Brother to alarming heights thanks to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, the new Oliver Stone biopic is meant to add a human face to one of the biggest stories of this decade. Too bad it fails in its mission, because while the topic is compelling, the film itself really isn't.

Injured while training to be an Army Ranger, Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) decides to apply for the CIA, instantly winning the approval of his boss and instructor Corbin O’Brian (Rhys Ifans) with his genius-level computer intellect. But Snowden's enthusiasm and early successes are soon marred when he realizes that his own government has been collecting data on every American by using the broadly-powered and redoubtable FISA protocols. For Snowden, the news is particularly devastating when he realizes his girlfriend (Shailene Woodley) is also being spied upon, if for no other reason than to make sure Snowden doesn't get out of hand. Faced with declining health and the prospect that millions of Americans are being lied to about their government's post-9/11 activities, Snowden makes a bold decision to leak the news and accompanying documents to two journalists (Zachary Quinto and Tom Wilkinson) and a documentary filmmaker (Melissa Leo). Their revelations will soon blow open the doors on America's largest spy network, leaving Snowden without a home and the country's reputation on the hot seat.

Simply put, Writer/Director Oliver Stone struggles to keep our attention, hoping to weave the 2014 CitizenFour documentary into Snowden, as if both were meant to bookmark the experience as definitive editions of the event. But while Laura Poitras’ version is perhaps one of the best documentaries ever made, Stone's obviousness in his stance is sometimes painful to watch, because he makes Snowden so boring and the spy tech so Jason Bourne. There's the easily-labeled "Download these spy folders" scene that you wish someone would have shaken Stone to remind him that he's actually trying to make a smart movie, and that adding dumbed-down the tech is just insulting.

The movie is set up much alike another snoozer Sully, starting off as Poitras begins her filming and then moving back to the beginning of Snowden's story before picking it up after the files are released. It's a well-shot and cut affair, with solid (but unremarkable) performances from Gordon-Levitt and even Woodley. For the first time in awhile, I found her performance to be authoritative without feeling like she was painting her portrayal with crayons. Gordon-Levitt loves his character roles (see The Walk), which usually means you'll marvel at his acumen which almost overpowers the screen. He looks and even sounds like Snowden, but never really gets much deeper than that. Stone paints in such broad strokes - with good being good and bad being evil (see again Sully) - that neither Woodley nor Levitt never get a chance to grow into their roles. The same goes for the disposable cast, which includes semi-cameos in Nicholas Cage, Joely Richardson, and Timothy Olyphant. Each are perfectly-crafted caricatures whose DNA is locked in the moment our film begins.

Snowden isn't a total disaster, not by a longshot. Composer Craig Armstrong turns in an interesting 80's keyboard score that peaks my interest, and the film in general is bathed in warm colors and fabulous sets. But Stone's textbook gameplan - that to mistrust everything and seed hostility - does nothing to elevate the conversation about what we give up when allow our government to supersede The Bill of Rights in exchange for protection. That is perhaps the most important national debate that can be had at this time, and yet all Stone does is bore us to death with a step-above documentary that makes Snowden as dull as we all thought he was.

Snowden is one of those films that's meant to inspire fierce debate among moviegoers as they walk out. Too bad the content of those discussions will fall squarely in the "Boy, was that boring!" category and not where it actually should. Nonetheless, check out CitizenFour - it never plays the game safely, and is worth every ounce of its Oscar win. Snowden will merely make you want to cut to a chase that never really gets there.

Snowden is rated R for language and some sexuality/nudity and has a runtime of 134 minutes.

Movie Review: Blair Witch

Sequel can't see the forest for the trees.

Review by Brandon Wolfe

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

The phrase “lightning in a bottle” gets tossed around so often that it’s long since lapsed into musty cliché, but that truly is the best descriptor to apply to 1999’s The Blair Witch Project. That microbudget indie sensation had an immensely transformative cultural impact. It singlehandedly created the modern found-footage horror subgenre, further popularized by Paranormal Activity and its ubiquitous brethren. It still stands as one of the most successful independent films of all time, as well as, for a time, the single most profitable film ever made, from a budget-to-gross perspective. It shook up the horror genre at a time when Scream clones were the law of the land. Hell, it even essentially invented viral marketing, with its elaborate, mythology-building website. But the true legacy of The Blair Witch Project lies with its scrappy ingenuity, its canny ability to weave a spooky campfire yarn and then stick you right inside of it. Its account of three student filmmakers shooting a documentary about an entity that is said to haunt the Black Hills forest outside of Burkittsville, Maryland, but ultimately filming a first-hand account of their own doom, possesses an unblinking authenticity, such to the point that its tall tale was widely believed to be true upon the film’s release. Watching The Blair Witch Project, you never receive the comfort of movie artifice, the relief of clear-cut fiction. In a niche genre that cheats constantly, this film never does. It works because it feels so hauntingly genuine.

Given the horror genre’s unbending need to sequelize anything that ever made a buck in profit, the question quickly arose of how to fashion a franchise out of something as singular as The Blair Witch Project. An attempt was made with 2000’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, which paradoxically wedded more conventional horror thrills to an unconventional through-the-looking-glass conceit, examining where fiction and reality dovetail and diverge using The Blair Witch Project (a work of fiction in the sequel’s universe as in our own) as a focal point. Each of these two approaches were not only completely wrong for the Blair Witch mythos, but were at odds with each other, resulting in a film that was an unqualified mess and a notorious failure. Book of Shadows snuffed out the Blair Witch machine in its infancy. Despite several efforts by creators Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez to mount a third film, there would be no further ventures into the woods for well over a decade after. Honestly, it seemed to be for the best.

Then, late this past July, an announcement was made out of the clear blue sky that the impending horror film The Woods, which unmistakably owed an obvious debt to The Blair Witch Project, was actually a covert sequel to the original film. Director Adam Wingard, who has made a name for himself within the horror genre with You’re Next, The Guest and contributions to the V/H/S series, had secretly crafted a return to the Black Hills, centering on the brother of original lead documentarian Heather Donahue as he leads a new group of amateur filmmakers into those same woods to find out what happened to his sister 20 years earlier. Revisiting the original’s found-footage structure, albeit with more cinematic polish, the new film looked to be the sequel fans wanted Book of Shadows to be.

So is the unimaginatively titled Blair Witch worth the nearly two decades it took to arrive? The answer is a definitive…sort of. College student James Donahue (James Allen McCune) has been obsessed with his sister’s disappearance all his life, and when a new tape is unearthed of her plight in the woods, he is motivated to see if Heather could still be out there. He is joined by student filmmaker Lisa (Callie Hernandez), buddy Peter (Brandon Scott), Peter’s girlfriend Ashley (Corbin Reid) and Lane and Talia (Wes Robinson and Valorie Curry), the pair of kooky locals who discovered this latest tape. The group sets off into the woods, armed with such state-of-the-art film equipment as drones and ear-mounted digital cameras, gadgets that would have seemed straight out of Star Trek to Heather, Mike and Josh in 1994. Setting up camp on their first night, the group is immediately besieged by creepy forces, though it quickly grows unclear how much of the phenomena is genuine and how much is being generated by Lane, who is obsessed with the Blair Witch legend and seems keen to put on a show for the crew’s cameras.

Wingard’s reverence for the original is clear from the start. Not only is he faithful to the film’s vérité house style, but he also incorporates much of the Blair Witch mythology into Lane’s stories to the group, some of which was only known to nerds like myself who combed the website and ancillary materials. Where Wingard errs, however, is in how he unspools this new group’s plunge into chaos. In the original, Heather, Mike and Josh very gradually come undone, their torment mounting incrementally with each passing night, creating a slow descent into madness. Here, Wingard throws his characters straight into the deep end. Though the first night’s findings are shown to be the work of Lane, the second night’s encounters (and there are only two nights in the film) come fast and furious. Apparently taking the “nothing happens!” criticism lobbed at the original to heart, Wingard doesn’t display that same slow-boiling patience. He can’t wait to start picking off his characters, Friday the 13th-style. No time for filming rocks, Dr. Jones.

Miscalculations are also made in terms of the content shown. It’s important to recall that The Blair Witch Project never showed us anything incontrovertibly supernatural. You could watch that film and easily surmise that the trio was beset by locals, forest dwellers or even each other. That’s what made it so spooky, that you never see the thing that’s hunting them. This being a sequel, a certain amount of escalation is anticipated, so there was no reason to assume that same ambiguity would remain in place, but some of the sights Wingard shows us feel off-brand for a Blair Witch film. Ashley sustains a foot injury early on that manifests itself as gory body-horror, with objects queasily making their way out of her wounds. More alarming is another gruesome bit where one of the trademark stick figures is shown to have voodoo-doll properties, leaving a body mangled upon its snapping. And in the climax, where we do finally catch a few glimpses of the witch herself, she looks to be disappointingly of the same shrieking, rampaging ilk as the antagonist of any post-The Ring horror film. Wingard loses sight of the fact that less was more where the original was concerned.

Another problem is the characters here aren’t so hot. Heather, Mike and Josh might have been grating, but you truly got a sense of their personalities as their ordeal worsened, to the point where Heather’s filmed confession near the end carried a real emotional punch. You never get that same connection with this new group. First off, James’ quest barely even makes any sense. He was four years old when Heather disappeared, so we’re asked to swallow the notion that he’s obsessed with finding a sibling that he couldn’t possibly have any substantial memories of, to say nothing of the fact that there’s no reason in the world why he should suspect that Heather is still alive out there somewhere (I guess she liked those woods so much that she abandoned society to live in a hut out there?). Logically, this premise would have made much more sense if the film had taken place only a few short years after the events of The Blair Witch Project, but they didn’t make drones in 1997, so no dice. James and his comrades never emerge as anything more than stock horror-movie avatars to be systematically knocked off. Say what you will about her, but there’s a reason why we still remember Heather Donahue’s name after all these years, whereas I saw this movie last night and had to look up these characters’ names for this review.

Wingard does pull a few other tricks out of his sleeve that are interesting, yet seem an ill fit with the Blair Witch brand. He takes the ball and runs with the concept that the reason Heather, Mike and Josh kept walking in circles is that the witch somehow reconfigured geography to keep them in her trap, a notion hinted at in the original while also being plausibly attributable to the characters’ weariness and fractured mental state. Here, not only is geography constantly, unambiguously in flux, but time itself also appears to be manipulated by the witch. Some members of the group experience days at the same rate that others experience hours and, at one point, night simply doesn’t end the following morning so that the witch can continue her pursuit. This is intriguing, but also kind of a cheat. Heather, Mike and Josh may not have enjoyed a level playing field, but at least the sun still worked. More intriguing is the idea, introduced conversationally early on and put to the test in the climax, that the witch can only kill you if you look at her, like she’s the Ark of the Covenant with its lid off. This results in a neat bit where the last survivors refuse to open their eyes while the witch attempts to bait them into doing so, but it also has the effect of diminishing the famous standing-in-the-corner move as a way to stay alive rather than a creepy ritual to be subjected to before being killed.

If it sounds like I’m dwelling too much on Wingard’s missteps, let me also say that he does a fair amount right as well. His is a much more grueling, punishing Blair Witch than the first, with a heavy dose of Evil Dead also in its DNA. While it discards the slow-burn nightmare of the original, it must be said that this Blair Witch keeps the tension running high once it gets going, rarely letting up. Its best bit is one unlike anything from The Blair Witch Project, more akin to The Descent, with one character attempting to smoosh herself through a very narrow dirt tunnel to escape a locked cellar, the claustrophobic pressure growing increasingly unbearable. Despite the ways in which this film is at odds with the tenets of what we think of as The Blair Witch Project, it remains largely effective as a teeth-gnashing exercise in sustained anxiousness. And after all, a sequel that qualifies as serviceable is something that would have seemed as welcome a sight to fans in 2000 as a populated area would look to any of the series’ characters.

She's Gotta Have It TV Show Heading To Netflix

She's Gotta Have It helped put Spike Lee on the indie movie map, kick-starting his career and showing what he could do with limited resources and a lot of heart. Now he's turning back to it to launch the first multi-part drama the director has brought to TV, in this case at Netflix.

According to the streaming service, the new series will update the original movie while staying true to its tone, following Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late twenties struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her friends, her job and her three lovers: the cultured model, Greer Childs; the protective investment banker, Jamie Overstreet; and ‘da original B-Boy Sneakerhead’, Mars Blackmon (played in the original film by Lee himself).

Lee will direct all 10 episodes and is currently building the cast (which will reportedly be even more diverse than the original) ready to kick off shooting in New York next month.

“She’s Gotta Have It has a very special place in my heart. We shot this film in 12 days (2 six day weeks) way back in the back back of the hot summer of 1985 for a mere total of $175,000. Funds that we begged, borrowed and whatnot to get that money. This is the 1st official Spike Lee feature film joint and everything that we have been blessed with in this tough business of film all have been due to SGHI," Lee said in a statement. "Now with the passing (August 8th) of the 30th anniversary, it’s a gift that keeps on giving. We are getting an opportunity to revisit these memorable characters who will still be relevant and avant garde three decades later. With all that said it was my wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, producer in her own right, who had the vision to take my film from the big screen and turn it into an episodic series. It had not occurred to me at all. Tonya saw it plain as day. I didn’t. We are hyped that Netflix is onboard with this vision as Nola Darling, Mars Blackmon, Jamie Overstreet and Greer Childs do da damn thang now, today in da republic of Brooklyn, New York."

It's not the first time someone has tried to re-work the film for TV – US cable channel Showtime tried back in 2014 – but this one is actually going ahead. There's no release date yet, but we'd expect it to arrive later next year.

Annabelle 2 Trailer

"She’s got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes.” That’s right, creepy toy Annabelle is back in a sequel to The Conjuring’s spinoff hit. On this evidence, Annabelle 2 will ruin the doll retailing industry for good.

Annabelle 2's plot is focused on the doll-maker who created the grinning fiend in the first place. Twenty years after their daughter died tragically, the craftsman and his scarred wife (Miranda Otto) welcome a nun and several girls from an orphanage that recently had to close. Unfortunately for the new arrivals, the possessed doll is none too pleased with the added house guests. Stephanie Sigman is playing Sister Charlotte, said nun.

This one is overseen David F. Sandberg, whose last film Lights Out was described by a magazine not too far from here as "a surprise contender for horror of the year”. Annabelle 2 gets its worldwide release on 19 May, 2017.

Screen Gems will be bringing a pair of its franchises to New York Comic-Con next month: its final installment Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and Underworld: Blood Wars, which will feature the NYCC debut of star Kate Beckinsale.

Both films will join for a panel on Friday, October 7 at 1:30 PM at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. NY Comic-Con runs October 6-9 mostly set at the Javits Center in Manhattan.

At San Diego’s Comic-Con in July, the genre label ginned up interest in its thriller Don’t Breathe with a screening. That pic went on to open at $26.4 million at the box office two weeks ago and it now has a gross of $66.8M domestic.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is the sixth pic in the series based on the video game. Mila Jovovich and writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson have been in them all, and will be in attendance along with Ali Larter and William Levy. Underworld: Blood Wars is the fifth pic in that franchise; Beckinsale, co-star Theo James and director Anna Foerster will attend.

The panel gives Screen Gems a solid platform to launch the movies in January: Underworld: Blood Wars will hit theaters January 6 and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter bows January 27.

Harley Quinn Spin Off Is Happening

According to THR the Aussie actress already has two projects set at the studio, including a spinoff for her 'Suicide Squad' character Harley Quinn.

Margot Robbie is setting down roots at Warner Bros.

The Aussie actress is signing a first-look deal with the studio behind her summer Suicide Squad to develop and produce feature films through her LuckyChap Entertainment banner.

Producing and developing with Robbie will be her LuckyChap partners Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr.

Robbie, whose breakout performance came in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, is only 26 years old but has quickly grasped control of her career in a way few actors, especially female actors, do, steadily wading into the world of producing.

Robbie and LuckyChap are in post-production on their first movie as producers, the upcoming neo noir thriller Terminal. LuckyChap also is developing and producing a Tonya Harding biopic, I, Tonya, where the actress will play the disgraced figure skater, and is developing an adaptation of Bad Monkeys, a novel by Matt Ruff, along with with Bluegrass Films’ Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark for Universal Pictures.

Warner Bros. has built a relationship with the actress, who has starred in Focus and The Legend of Tarzan for the studio before becoming one of the key factors as to why Suicide Squad grossed over $700 million worldwide.

The actress already has two projects set at Warners: a Suicide Squad spinoff for her character Harley Quinn (as well as other DC heroines) that she will executive produce and an adaptation of Dean N. Jensen's Queen of the Air to which she is attached to star.

The first-look deal underlines Warner Bros.’ renewed focus on female-driven storytelling and comes after some notables moves from the Burbank-based studio.

It created the Warner Bros. Emerging Film Directors Workshop earlier this year as a program to increase female voices, among other under-represented sectors, which was spearheaded by the studio’s president, creative development and worldwide production Greg Silverman.

Warners has Wonder Woman, based on DC’s iconic female superhero, coming out next year and was firm in its commitment to find a female director for that movie. And it is prepping Ocean’s Ocho, a female-centric take on Ocean’s 11 that will feature an A-list female ensemble.

New TROLLS Trailer & Trollify Yourself!

Starring Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake, TROLLS is a smart, funny, and irreverent comedy about the search for happiness, and just how far some will go to get it.

Make sure to Trollify Yourself! With fun tools you can create and share some hair-raising Trolls characters!

Trollify Yourself HERE: www.dreamworks.com/trollify

From the creators of Shrek comes DreamWorks Animation's Trolls, a smart, funny, and irreverent comedy about the search for happiness, and just how far some will go to get it. This hilarious film transports audiences to a colorful, wondrous world populated by the overly optimistic Trolls, with a constant dance in their step and a song on their lips, and the comically pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their stomachs.

After the Bergens invade Troll Village, Poppy (Kendrick), the happiest Troll ever born, and the overly-cautious curmudgeonly Branch (Timberlake) set off on a journey to rescue her friends. Together, this mismatched duo embark on a rescue mission full of adventure and mishaps - trying to tolerate each other long enough to get the job done.

Utilizing music to further the film's narrative, the Trolls soundtrack is produced by Justin Timberlake and features five original songs including songs by Justin Timberlake and Gwen Stefani in addition to a number of classic hits from the 60's - 80's.

Justice League's “Tactical Batsuit” Revealed

Director Zack Snyder has revealed a new look at Batman's tactical Batsuit, the first time we've seen it on Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne.

See more images after the Jump...

Alfred and Bruce develop an advanced suit in the “final chapter” of this story to fit the needs of the mission. This suit isn’t going to be used in filming for another two months so we only got to see a very early prototype of it alongside concept art. Described as “the tactical Batsuit,” it looks very much like the classic Batsuit augmented with straps and layers of leather and protective plates. A new cowl allows for flight goggles which he’ll wear when piloting a new vehicle. The straps look more military grade. I don’t love it. The cowl offers more protection in this story. It’s been implied inside the cowl there is a whole sub-membrane that is now expressed outside the cowl. Also, Snyder has embraced non-symmetry, giving Batman extra protection on one arm over another, making the uniform look more individualized and battle-worn like a warrior’s.
