TV Recap: Vikings Recap Season Finale "The Lord’s Prayer"

TV Recap: Vikings Recap Season Finale "The Lord’s Prayer"
By: Sue

Helga arrives at Kattegat with Floki’s daughter in her arms. She finds Floki asleep on the ground, and he is stunned to see his new daughter. Helga puts the baby in his arms, and he worries over dropping her. He sees that she is a beautiful child, and makes Helga take back the child. He wishes to name the baby Angrboða after Loki’s first wife. She was a evil being, bore monsters, but Loki thinks it’s a good name. Helga wishes Floki to come home with her, but he will not. He sends her away, for her own good.

King Horik welcomes his children and wife to Kattegat, bringing them all to meet Ragnar and his family. There is a large welcome in the keep for the Royal family, where King Horik introduces his family. He sees Ragnar as an equal. Between them and Lagertha, they now have land in Wessex, and plan to go off to more lands together. He wishes to align them even more, for Ragnar has many sons, and he many daughters. King Horik’s wife chats up Lagertha. Ragnar watches from his corner, and Floki eyeballs King Horik. Floki reminds King Horik of his proposition, and King Horik admits he’s unsure he can trust him, which is exactly what Ragnar said to him.

Bjorn asks Porunn what she plans to do with her freedom. As a slave she loved Bjorn because he treated her as a free woman, but now she has choices she says. He tells her that is her first mistake, and walks away.

The celebration continues to the night. Floki chats with Torstein, who is indulging in all the women around. Siggy tries to seduce the King, wanting to know his plans. His wife and children are there, and that’s all she needs to know. Floki runs into Athelstan. He tells him that no one wants him there, that he betrayed the Gods, Athelstan cannot get away from Floki fast enough. King Horik asks for proof he can trust Floki. He asks him to kill someone who matters to show his loyalty. Floki looks for a target, King Horik has Ragnar in his sights, as he slumps on his throne. Floki’s attention is on Princess Aslaug though.

The games continue outside as each tries to flick coins into a bucket. King Horik watches Torstein, Floki, Bjorn, Ragnar and even Athelstan. King Horik asks Floki if he has chosen his victim, he has.

Floki makes the trek up the hill and picks some mushrooms.

Ragnar lays out his plans, but king Horik wonders what the nonfarmers should do. Those who do not wish to farm can work with King Ecbert and Princess Kwenthrith. King Horik does not trust King Ecbert, but Athelstan believes that he will honor his offer. Lagertha thinks Athelstan is still an innocent, though she does not agree with King Horik either. Those who wish to farm should, those who wish to work with King Ecbert and Princess Kwenthrith should. Everyone gets what they want, except King Horik, who wants revenge on King Ecbert.

Floki goes to see Rollo. Siggy is unsure if he will walk again. Floki tells her to go get some rest and she will watch over him. She’s been on nurse duty day and night, Siggy reluctantly agrees. Floki sits by his side, reminding Rollo of a time he put him in a bed like this. Floki has brought him a gift, the food of the Gods he says, mushrooms. Rollo eats them and Floki waits.

The hall is full at dinnertime. Children run all over the place. Floki grabs one of the children and gives him a message for Torstein, warning the child that if he does not keep his secret terrible things will happen to him. Torstein is found dead, poisoned, and Bjorn vows revenge, even Floki makes a scene of it. It’s enough to convince King Horik. King Horik reveals to Floki that he will kill Ragnar, Princess Aslaug, Lagertha and all of their children. He knows Ragnar is tough to kill, but he also knows that Floki will find a way to do it, and they will attack tomorrow.

Princess Aslaug and Lagertha watch the lightening striking. They know the Gods are speaking, that something is coming.

Bjorn tries to make it up to Porunn. He is crazy about her, worships her, and wants only her. Porunn doesn’t want to be worshipped, she wants to fight.

Rollo gets out of bed. He tries to walk as Siggy watches. He falls, and she urges him not to give up, but he doesn’t understand why she even cares. She isn’t sure, but she thinks that he can still be usefull. She leaves his axe out of reach and goes into town. She sees King Horik. He wants to chat, but she’s a little miffed with him. He asks for Ragnar’s weakness. It’s quite obvious. He tells her that if that is his weakness then she must go to the great hall at sunset and kill Ragnar’s children. If she does that, he will marry her, make her his second wife and a Queen. King Horik hands her a dagger to go the job.

Porunn and Bjorn square off. She starts the sparring, but Bjorn fights back, and not gently. Before long they’re both mildly bloody. Bjorn doesn’t want to fight her though, and Porunn runs off. He apologizes to her running after her. Floki hides unseen but Porunn is no longer running, she’s sitting waiting for him on a log. No longer throwing punches, she strokes his hand. He wants to kiss her, but he holds back. She takes the lead and initiates the kiss, before pulling him down to the ground and undressing him. All the while Floki watches, his sword drawn.

King Horik gives to his son the sword of Kings. Today he tells him that they must overcome the magic of Ragnar. He wishes to snuff out the entire family, knowing that even one of Ragnar’s line survives they will come back to kill them all.

Ragnar asks Athelstan to teach him one of his prayers so he can learn. Athelstan drops to his knees, and utters a prayer with Ragnar repeating the Lord’s Prayer. King Horik’s son watches boats full of men arrive on the shores. Princess Aslaug watches as Siggy gathers up her children. Athelstan helps Ragnar finish the prayer. King Horik’s wife is laced into her armor, as King Horik’s men sneak into the city, slaughtering any who are outside. The men reach the city center, and they take the citizens by surprise. Rollo feigns struggling in his bed, but he’s prepared as men arrive in his home. Athelstan is ready as well, and Lagertha walks the streets. She’s pissed. She takes on King Horik’s wife. The ladies meet sword to sword, but it’s clear who the alpha bitch is in the room. King Horik’s wife didn’t stand a chance. Bjorn asks Floki where he’s been, he’s been looking after Bjorn, as Ragnar asked him to do. King Horik’s daughter’s huddle in fear. Lagertha is sent out, but the girls aren’t likely to survive. Kattegat is engulfed in war. King Horik goes to find Ragnar in the keep. Torstein is there, as is Lagertha. King Horik’s men are slaughtered. King Horik tells Floki that he betrayed the Gods, but he only betrayed him, Floki admits. Princess Aslaugh, Bjorn and the rest watch on. King Horik asks that Ragnar spares his son, and he nods. King Horik approaches, and the warriors takes a single swing at him inflicting damage as he comes. Siggy comes out of the shadows as King Horik falls to his knees, giving Ragnar the dagger he gave her to kill his children with. The room clears out, and Ragnar stabs him with his own dagger before finishing him off with his hands.

Bjorn retruns to King Horik’s quarters, most of King Horik’s children are dead. He tells the remaining two girls to go, and they run like rabbits. Bjorn finds King Horik’s sword. Ragnar is covered in his enemy’s blood. He rose from farmer to earl, and now to King. King Ragnar sits high atop a cliff overlooking his kingdom. It’s good to be King.

TV Recap: Reign "Higher Ground"

TV Recap: Reign "Higher Ground"
By: Sue

Francis looks over a French Outpost. There’s death all around. Francis addresses a small group that has been holding the outpost. Francis tells them that they’re in danger of losing the war, and rather than getting picked off one by one, he wishes to advance to the English castle. Francis’s guards warn that if he’s recognized as a noble, he will be targeted first by the English. Francis rips off his identifying sash, and introduces himself as the new commander.

Greer is happy to have Mary join her for breakfast. Mary has been spending a lot of time alone, worried over Francis, and she’s a little miffed that he took men that were to help her mother to save French soldiers. Mary spots a guard with a scar, that she wants to gouge the eyes out of. Greer asks why, but Mary doesn’t get a chance to answer when a letter arrives.

Catherine greets her cousins Roman and Hortencia. That’s all the castle needs, more Medici’s. Catherine’s greetings to Roman is much warmer than hers to Hortencia. There’s a little bitter exchange between the women. Hortencia may be fond of Henry, and have a colored past with him, but ultimately he chose Catherine. Hortencia cuts to the chase, Roman has come to trade, but she’s come to take back the men she loaned Catherine. Mary is introduced to Catherine’s cousins. Mary wishes a private word with Catherine, Catherine grants her the audience, and has Beatrice take the cousins away. Mary tells Catherine that her mother’s situation is dire. The people want blood, and she needs to escape in secret, and to do so she needs a large some of money. Catherine once asked Mary’s mother for help, and she gave it. Mary is asking for the same help now. Catherine tells her that the court’s money is tied up in the Calais war, but Mary is talking about Catherine’s own personal money. Catherine tries to deny it, but Mary cuts her short, telling her that there is no hidden money. Mary begs for her help, and Catherine snaps at her weakness and what it implies.

Mary hears a noise, and sends away her servants. John has arrived, unseen. He’s a known mercenary, and one very good at his job. He came at an urgent calling. Mary tells him about Catherine’s secret stash that she wants him to find. She gave Catherine the option to be a decent person and help out a friend, but she refused. John doesn’t think that was a wise choice. Mary thinks that if he does it right then Catherine won’t know its missing for some time. Mary wants details, but John cannot give her more insight to his methods. She wants to make sure that no innocent blood is spilled. He promises to try to heed her wishes, but promises results in two days, and then disappears.

Catherine goes to confession. She tells the priest about her many indiscretions, including taking the Lord’s name in vain, massacres, slapping her servant, and even worse coming as she loathes her cousin, Hortencia. She asks for her penance, but the priest passes out. When Catherine steps out of the confessional she is swiftly grabbed.

Keena tries to cheer Bash up, but he’s worried about his brother off at war. She distracts him with a little soccer, and Julien joins in. Lola starts cramping, something that has been happening. They take her in to lie down.

Francis and his men walk through the woods, when the English attack. Ther are men being slaughtered all around him, he nearly gets slaughtered himself when Leith saves him, he’s in his debt.

Catherine sits blindfolded in shackles. Her captor, John, doesn’t say a word as she tries to analyze him. She doesn’t think that he wishes to kill her, and she tries to determine who wanted her taken. She thinks that it may be Mary, and she offers him double for the head of the person responsible. He toys with her earring.

Lola gets checked out, she and the baby are well Agnes reports. Julien tends to her, offer to sleep in his own bed to give her more room. That is not what Lola could ever want, she’s been happy in her marriage, far happier than she expected. She asks Julien if he would be there for the birth, but he declines. He thinks that she’s far stronger than she knows.

Hortencia tells Mary that Catherine has been kidnapped. There is a ransom note, but the Medici’s have a long standing policy not to deal with this sort of things. Mary knows there’s no way to get to Henry in time. Hortencia refuses to give into the demands even after Catherine’s ear and earring are delivered.

Francis has noticed that there is a frequency of the same men sent after them. The castle isn’t well manned, they have to strike now before reinforcements arrive. The English engage them in another battle.

Greer comes to see Lola, and although she looks fine, she isn’t. Her family has sent Julien the dowry that he’s been after. She’s worried. Julien married her before they loved eachother, and that concerns her. Greer tells her that she married him because she was pregnant with another man’s baby, so they both may have ulterior motives, and if there’s a happy ending in long run, what does the original motivations matter. Lola hopes that Lord Casselroy is Greer’s happy ending, but she asks if she still thinks about Leith. She does, and she hopes he’s alive and well.

Francis strategizes to take the cannon, and save the day. Leith wants him prove that he thinks of the men as more than just chess pieces. Francis intends to do just that, but if they’re going to stand a chance they have to capture the cannon and take it out.

Kenna asks Bash to get close to Julien to figure out his motives. Bash refuses, telling her to leave it alone. He knows that Lola was pregnant with someone else’s baby, but doesn’t know whos. He asks his wife to give them a chance, because Lola does love Julien, and he doesn’t want his meddling to ruin their marriage.

Mary meets with John, upset that he cut off Catherine’s ear. He didn’t. He got an ear from a grave digger. She wanted him to steal the money, knowing that the Medici’s would never pay it. He tells Mary that the Queen offered him double, but he doesn’t plan to double cross Mary, instead he suggests that she chooses someone else for him to deliver the head of, and once she pays him, he gives her her money minus his cut.

Bash cannot believe that Mary hired a mercenary, and now she has to have an innocent die in her stead. Mary isn’t sure what she’s capable of anymore. She’s been looking into the men responsible for the massacre of her countrymen. Bash knows that Mary came to him because he’s been in this position. Bash tells her that she has to be sure of her choice because otherwise her conscious will never rest.

Mary notices Hortencia speaking with Catherine’s guard, she tells her that he is actually her guard. She deduces that Mary is trying to get information about the massacre, but she thinks that Mary is trying to pin the massacre on her. She threatens Mary, but makes it clear that Catherine must be taught to stay out of her affairs.

Kenna lies in bed waiting. Bash has been looking into Julien. So far he’s found that Julien is planning a hunting trip, he’s just not bringing anything he needs to hunt. Bash knows that Julien is up to something, he’s just not sure what yet.

John brings Catherine a head, the one of the person who asked for her to be kidnapped he tells her. She thinks it’s Mary’s, but he tells her that when she returns she will find out the proof she needs. Catherine tells him where he can find his gold, and he gives her the key to unlock herself as he slips away. The head belongs to Hortencia.

Francis sends his men out for a disctraction, as he readies himself. He lights his arrow, aiming at the stored powder. His arrow flies true, and the cannon is taken out, but Leith is missing.

Kenna tells Lola what Bash has found out. Lola thinks that Julien is going to leave her, but Kenna tells her that if she loves him, then she should talk to him about it. Kenna makes excuses to leave when Julien arrives. Lola wants to chat. She pours her heart out to him. He tries to make excuses, reasons that he can’t stay, but she tells him that he can keep her for much less than he could imagine. She is everything that he ever wanted, and yet he doesn’t believe her words, but he wishes he did.

Catherine makes a splashy return. She isn’t fully buying the Hortencia story, she was vile but she doesn’t think it was her, when Mary is a more obvious suspect. She wants to find out who is really behind her kidnapping.

Leith is found, but he’s badly injured. Francis orders the men to secure the position, to get word to de Guise. Francis tries to pull Leith to safety, but Leith tells him to just leave him. Francis gives him a pep talk, asking him what is worth living for. Leith tells him that the girl he can’t live without is marrying another, because her station is above his own. Good for him that he’s just befreiended and saved the future king of france who can just so happen to bestow titles and lands. Leith gets an incentive to live, and Francis helps him to his feet as the horns of France sound. The road to Calais is now open.

Julien’s carriage awaits, and he hesitates.

Roman reports to Catherine. Hortencia was completely broke. There are instructions for the delivery of money instead of actual money. She’d been paying vast sums of money for years to cover it up. Catherine thought it had been Mary this entire time, and she had been such a good role model in the subjects of lying, cheating, stealing, and killing. Mary is still an innocent though, and Catherine wonders how long that can last for her.

Julien comes and confesses to Lola that he did plan to leave her. He had a falling out with his family, and they aren’t good people. He planned to live off her money, the amount he could get his hands on, which is why he didn’t care that she was pregnant with another man’s baby. He feared that he has nothing but himself to offer her. She can live a simple life, she wants to forgive him, but she isn’t sure she can trust him. He’s willing to be there, to make her trust him, and he promises her no more lies.

John delivers Mary a small portion of the money, he will bring more with her instructions. She’s not done with his services. She needs a man she can trust to deliver the gold to rescue her mother. He tells her that good men like him are hard to find. She has the men, Hortencia’s men, and they’re sent to prepare to set sail. John reminds her that these are the same men that killed her countrymen. She knows they’re monsters, but now they’re her monsters.

Josh Hartnett: Why He Turned Down #Superman, #Batman & #SpiderMan

Josh Hartnett sat down with Details to promote his upcoming film PENNY DREADFUL, and he was asked a few questions why he turned down Superman, Batman and Spider-Man roles. I am sure he is kicking himself in the ass right about now.

Read the interview after the Jump...

DETAILS: You're 35 now, but in your twenties, you got offered pretty much everything. You turned down Superman Returns, and you were in talks to play almost every other superhero.

Josh Hartnett: Spider-Man was something we talked about. Batman was another one. But I somehow knew those roles had potential to define me, and I didn't want that. I didn't want to be labeled as Superman for the rest of my career. I was maybe 22, but I saw the danger.

DETAILS: Your agents must have been slitting their wrists.

Josh Hartnett: I didn't have those agents for much longer after that. There was a lot of infighting between my manager and agents, trying to figure out who to put the blame on. It got to the point where none of us were able to work together.

DETAILS: What would you say if Warner Bros. called you tomorrow and said, "Josh, we'd still love you to wear the cape. We've got a great new concept . . . "?

Josh Hartnett: I'd say, "Let's talk about how it would be done, see if we can get on the same page." Compromise doesn't scare me anymore.

Manny Hernandez Interview. Isn't A Known Commodity Yet. Give It Time

Manny Hernandez, despite appearing in a string of films and TV shows include Joey and the Paris Hilton 'comedy' Bottom's Up, isn't a known commodity yet. Give it time.

We speak to the star of the upcoming Pure Love about his journey to the top.

Where do you think the readers might recognize you from?

In all honesty I don’t think anyone recognizes me yet, ha! Hopefully in the next couple of years that’ll change but at least people always tell me I look like someone.

You've done a variety of work in TV and Film. Do you prefer one medium over the other?

Both have their fulfilling aspects for me. Television is on a tighter schedule so you have less time to experiment or create a deeper character. You’re able to see your work in a quicker turnaround and it makes it feel like you have something to show for your time. Myself, I enjoy film over television because it’s more of a collaborative process. Unless you’re a regular on a television series then you don’t have the opportunity to develop both your character and relationships with the people you’re working with. Sure, you may not see your work for a long time, but it’s also a captured moment in time, that reminds you of where you were both professionally and personally.

Did you do any commercials before landing TV work?

Nope. I got my first audition for JOEY through an actors workshop.

What do you believe is the best way for an actor to get work. Is it through your own personal relationships or networking, or is an agent the way to go?

All those are very important but every actor needs to find what works best for them. That being said, I do feel that more important than any of those things is that an actor needs to prepare. Go to acting classes, workshops, do your homework. Know who you are. Know what kind of roles you want. Learn the entire process from camera work and lighting to writing and directing. Not that you’ll be going into those fields but just being knowledgeable about the process will make you a better actor. Create and produce your own work. Learn about casting or intern at some casting office so you learn and understand that most of the time the reason you aren’t cast has nothing to do with you. Take ownership of your career and you’ll naturally find yourself networking, building stronger relationships and hopefully it will lead you to find better representation. I feel like work leads to more work, that’s what’s worked for me over the years.

Is there an actor back home from Mexico whose journey you've especially admired?

I really like Gael Garcia Bernal. Great actor, low key and always has his hands involved with projects both in front of and behind the camera.

We'd be remiss to ask you about your upcoming slate, because it's quite full. What projects do you have coming up?

So this year I get to see some of the projects I worked on over the last couple of years. CALLEJERO, VERTICAL, AUTUMN WANDERER, that I also co-produced was just released and if all goes well PURE LOVE will be out there by the end of the year also. I’m currently in pre-production on two feature films THE LOSING GROUNDS, a dramatic ilm dealing with the journey of the homeless and dramatic comedy A DAY IN THE LIFE OF PEPE AMADOR, Currently in production on THE VANISHED, a throw back style thriller written and directed by Cristian Luna, about a journalist trying to figure out the whereabouts of Clara Parker and three missing ranch hands. Also have two short films THE CHALDEAN, written and directed by Sam J Warner recently wrapped and BOOTS, written by Kirsten Scoles also currently in production. There are few other projects coming up but not ready to elaborate on them just yet. Hopefully if it all pans out this year will be better then last year!

Armie Hammer To Star In "Mine"

Armie Hammer may not have seen the career boost he might have expected when The Lone Ranger failed to connect with audiences, but he’s still booking films. Variety reports that he’ll star in a psychological thriller called Mine.

No, the film won’t see him playing a live-action version of the seagulls from Finding Nemo. He’s actually set to play a soldier who finds himself stranded in the desert after a failed assassination mission. Exposed to the rigours of the harsh environment, he’ll have to battle life-threatening dangers and psychological trauma as he tries to survive. We're guessing there might be landmines involved as well, but possibly we're overthinking the title there.

Fabio Guaglione and Fabio Resinaro are set to co-write and direct the film, aiming to star work in the autumn, with The Conjuring's producer Peter Safran overseeing the shoot. We’re just hoping Hammer doesn’t have flashbacks to his Ranger days in the desert.

Next up for the actor is Guy Ritchie’s big screen version of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which will see Hammer’s Ilya Kuryakin paired with Henry Cavill’s Napoleon Solo as the agents trying to stop a mysterious criminal organisation’s nuclear plans.

Tim Blake Nelson Set To Star In The Fantastic Four

Tim Blake Nelson is in final negotiations to join the cast of 20th Century Fox’s reboot of The Fantastic Four.

Josh Trank is directing the movie, which once again focuses on the Marvel Comics quartet of scientist-adventurers Reed Richards (Miles Teller), aka Mr. Fantastic; his best friend Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell), aka The Thing; his girlfriend Sue Storm (Kate Mara), aka The Invisible Woman; and her brother, Johnny (Michael B. Jordan), aka The Human Torch.

Toby Kebbell is playing the villain, Doctor Doom.

Nelson will play Harvey Elder, an eccentric and socially awkward scientist.

In comics lore, Elder is actually the Mole Man, shunned by humanity and leader of a subterranean group of monsters known as the Moloids.

Sources say the Mole Man will not appear in this movie but Elder’s appearance does set up the character to be the villain in future installments of the franchise. Fox did not comment on the plans.

Simon Kinberg wrote the script and is producing with Hutch Parker.

Nelson already has past Marvel experience having played a key character in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. The actor, known for his eclectic indie fare, has several pics in the can, including Tommy Lee Jones’ The Homesman and Kill the Messenger with Jeremy Renner, among them.

The Other Woman Review. From A Males Point Of View

The Other Woman Review
By: John Meneghetti

TV audiences have forgiven characters like Don Draper and Tony Soprano for their marital infidelities over the last several years – possibly awaiting their comeuppance but ultimately drinking in their charm. New relationship comedy The Other Woman doesn’t stand for such caddishness! After finding that they’ve all been sharing the same man, Carly (Cameron Diaz), Kate (Leslie Mann), and Amber (Kate Upton) embark on a mission to make the cheating scoundrel, Mark (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), regret his philandering.

This movie uses humor to paint the heartbreak that unfaithfulness can cause. But instead of portraying female characters who resort to clawing each other’s eyes and weaves out in competition, the three wronged women channel their anger into a wacky revenge scheme that terrorizes Mark in Connecticut, New York, and the Bahamas. The dialogue especially pops when Diaz and Mann lock into quick laugh-inducing exchanges. A pleasure to watch, their scenes often feel like a sisterhood of the traveling rants. Aside from a few breezy lines from Nikki Minaj’s character Lydia, this flick treats extramarital affairs as inconsiderate offenses that are worthy of torturous punishment.

In 1990’s Home Alone, viewers reveled in Kevin’s (Macaulay Culkin) innovative methods of tormenting a pair of home invaders. If that movie was a demonstration of amusing self-defense, The Other Woman draws heavily from its mousetrap-like mayhem. This flick seems to believe that though there’s no comedy in cheating, there are laughs to be found in beating (as in besting one’s opponent, not physically beating someone!).

Exclusive Interview With Michael De Chant & Doug Gritzmacher "Soldiers Of Paint"

Exclusive Interview With Michael De Chant & Doug Gritzmacher

We got to talk to Michael De Chant & Doug Gritzmacher about their new documentary "Soldiers of Paint"

Veteran Production Assistant Michael De Chant and in-demand cameraman Doug Gritzmacher team for the acclaimed new documentary, Soldiers of Paint. Released to coincide the upcoming anniversary of D-Day, the Netflix release tells of one of the most thrilling paintball battles ever staged. Join 4,000 participants as they restage D-Day, the notorious 6th of June invasion of Normandy. Instead of bullets, it's paintball; instead of the French coast, it's Oklahoma. And, every year, it's any man's game, which means the Germans could win! Staged on a 700-acre battlefield owned by the grand-son of a veteran of Omaha Beach, this yearly battle of paint is fought as a tribute to all veterans. These paintball soldiers take "gung ho" to an all-time high, utilizing real tanks and airplanes for this epic fight.

Read our interview after the Jump...

For both of you, is this your first film?
DOUG : Mike and I have collaborated on several short films. Our most recent, “Bone Mixers”, is about an unlikely group of diverse people united by the game of dominoes. People from all different backgrounds—Czech Republic, Cuba, Iraq, Venezuala, Jamacia—gather once a week to play dominoes together. They bring with them elements of their respective cultures, so you have Americans eating aki and saltfish, a traditional Jamacian dish, while listening to salsa music on the stereo. The film played in several film festivals and won four awards and a grant. We found a similar dynamic with the Oklahoma D-Day game, where people of all different economic and social backgrounds are brought together in the middle of rural Oklahoma to play that game.

Why did you choose this particular subject to make a movie about?
DOUG : As filmmakers we first look for subject matter that provides a rich mix of engaging characters, dramatic story, and natural humor. We found all those elements and more in the "Oklahoma D-Day" event. Paintball just happens to be what brings all those elements together, but it also allowed us an opportunity to break the documentary mold. We wanted to make a documentary that had action, suspense and drama like you might find in a narrative action-adventure film and the paintball battle at "Oklahoma D-Day" had all that, too. Having gone through the battle multiple times now ourselves, we can safely say it is one of the most intense experiences we've had. To capture that excitement for you, the viewer, we embedded 11 cameramen in various units within the battle with two cameramen in the command centers. Each of our characters experienced very personal storylines of their own throughout the battle and our cameras were there to capture it all, which allowed us to create a moving, emotional, and riveting documentary.

MICHAEL: We were also really impressed with the community that we encountered when we first visited the event. They surprised us with how open and welcoming they were to a couple dudes from Washington DC who wanted to make a movie about them. For us, the epic “Saving Private Ryan” esque battle action at OK D-Day was going to be a pivotal part of creating a ground breaking doc but we also knew that to have a real story, we needed people – the compelling characters and personal stories that are critical to a good documentary. We saw that in the people we met the very first time we went to Oklahoma and that sold us on paintball as a subject matter.

The movie was shot primarily in Oklahoma, is that right?
DOUG : The game takes place in Oklahoma, so we spent a lot of time shooting there. But there is a lot of game played off the field during the 364 days leading up to each year’s game. So that meant traveling to and shooting at the places where our main “characters” lived and spending time preparing for the battle. Some of these locations included Chicago, Florida, New Orleans, Wichita, North Carolina, and Missouri.

What's the goal in Paintball? To 'paint' the opponent?
DOUG : It depends on the game. For Oklahoma D-Day, the goal is to amass more points than the opponent by the end of the game. Points are awarded to the side that captures specific “objectives”, such as Omaha Beach or Colleville. Points are also awarded for tank “kills”. But to kill a tank and capture an objective, lighting up your opponent’s troops is a necessary part of the game. Once you are hit by a paintball you are “dead” and required to sit out in a “dead zone” for about half an hour. The more troops on the other side you can hit, the easier it will be to take or hold an objective.

MICHAEL: A lot of small scale paintball games are built on the “capture the flag” concept: Through strategy and attrition – two teams battle each other to take a flag that is held at the far end of each of the team’s side of the field. At Oklahoma D-Day, there are “objectives” across the entire 700-acre battlefield over a course of an 8-hour day. These objectives are also time based – so for example the Allies need to take “Pegasus Bridge” by a certain time in the morning to get the points that are available. If the Germans hold off the Allies up to that time expiration, they get the points. Each of the objectives has a flagpole that flies the color of the team that controls it: If held by the Germans, the flag is red – and if held by the Allies the flag is blue. The objectives also typically hold strategic importance, so even though points are no longer available, the teams usually leave a force behind to secure the objective from being re-taken.

The movie is much more than a paintball movie, wouldn't you say?
DOUG : Absolutely. I personally don’t play paintball and have no interest in shooting a gun of any kind, yet I made this movie! We were inspired by such films as “Murderball” and “King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters”. The latter film is about an average joe who decided to try and get the all time high score in Donkey Kong. On the surface you would say, oh that’s just a film for video game fanatics, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In actuality, it’s the story of a man pursuing a dream, or a claim to fame, to find something that makes his life, in his eyes, meaningful. That’s something we can all relate to. We found a similar dynamic with Oklahoma D-Day. Yes, it involves paintball, but paintball is just the element that allows us to show larger, more universal themes that we can all relate to. Our goal was to make a film that appealed to paintball and non-paintball players alike. Since the film’s release we have gotten several messages from non-paintball players and wives whose husbands dragged them to see the film, on how surprised they were at how much they enjoyed the film.

MICHAEL: Yes. I see “Soldiers of Paint” as a true American tale. The paintball battle is indeed epic and entertaining but to me this event and the people who make it happen each June represent some of the best qualities in what it means to be American. Through his blood, sweat, and tears the event owner, Dewayne Convirs, has defied the odds against him to build this ultimate destination event – where men, women, and children of all races and nationalities convene for a week every year in rural “fly over” America. Yes, this community is united by their love of paintball and competition to win but what’s more is that they are equally united in their desire to have fun and to honor those who have sacrificed for their freedom.

Have you any plans to make another movie together?
DOUG : As we have learned throughout the making of this film, filmmaking is multi-step process. The final step of which is marketing and promotion. So to be honest we are still making this film and haven't had a chance to think about making another one.

MICHAEL: It’s funny - we’ve had a couple fans ask us if we’re going to make a “Soldiers of Paint 2”! My first thought is that I’m honored that they liked our movie enough that they’d want to see a sequel! But after the epic journey that we’ve been on to finish this film I truly don’t see that happening. As filmmakers we’re always looking for that next compelling idea that may just inspire us to grab our cameras - but until then, we continue the work to market and promote “Soldiers of Paint” (1)
