Gary Oldman To Star In Hunter Killer

After floating around in the murky depths of development hell for years now, action thriller Hunter Killer is finally be getting some momentum. Gerard Butler is back aboard after flirting with, and then jumping from the film in favor of Olympus Has Fallen, and now Gary Oldman is ready to join him.

Adapted from George Wallace and Don Keith’s novel Firing Point, the story concerns a rogue Russian general who kidnaps his country’s president and looks to kick off World War III. Allied against him are an untested submarine captain, Joe Glass (Butler) and a Navy SEAL team. Despite his history playing Russians on screen, Oldman in this case will be an American official.

This one has attracted plenty of interest through the years, pinging the radars of directors such as Philip Noyce, Martin Campbell and McG but never quite finding anyone to truly take it on. Now Original Films producing team Neil Moritz and Toby Jaffe have rescued the rights to make the film from the bankrupt Relativity Media and are on the hunt for someone to pick up the megaphone, as they want to start shooting in July.

Oldman will next be seen in crime drama Criminal and sci-fi drama The Space Between Us.

Movie Review: 'Hail, Caesar!'

The latest Coen Brothers' comedy misses the mark but still manages to entertain.

Review by Matt Cummings

In the Coen Brothers' Hail Caesar!, the Hollywood film system of 1951 takes us deep into the daily madness undertaken by Capitol Picture's studio head Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) as he struggles to keep his studio and mental state from cracking. Solving one crisis after another - including an unplanned pregnancy by Scarlett Johansson's twice-divorced chain smoker, a western lead (Alden Ehrenreich) horribly miscast in Director Laurence Laurentz (Ralph Fiennes) drawing room drama, and twin gossip columnists (both played by Tilda Swinson) - Mannix also has a personal struggle. He's been courted by Lockheed to head a comfy job and the chance to have dinner every night with his wife.

But soon all of that is superseded by the news that Capitol's lead Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) has disappeared while shooting a Jesus film set in Roman times. We later learn that he's been shuffled off to a Santa Monica beach house filled with disgruntled Hollywood writers who've signed on with the Communist Party and spend their day philosophizing their way through tea sandwiches. Utilizing a top-flight secretary and nerves of steel, Mannix must employ his own actors in a manhunt for the square-jawed buffoon Whitlock before Communists can shuffle him away, all while deciding if this sort of chaotic life is really for him.

Ill-content from the beginning, Hail Caesar! never truly locks in. Like many Coen Brothers films, you wonder what it is that you're watching and seeking the answers long after you've experienced it. That's usually a satisfying journey, but here that effort yields few satisfying results. The real problem with Hail Caesar! is not its exceptional cast or expert camerawork, but the long moments of boredom that grow out of the Coen Brothers' script. They take their immense talents for dark comedy and their exceptional casting prowess and waste it on several arcs that don't affect the bottom line. Several are thrown in as vignettes designed to elicit either laughter or condemnation about the Hollywood film system; but little of it ever truly works. We essentially have a 30-minute film, propped up by several (albeit great) 50's style performances and all those unnecessary arcs. But some of those set pieces, including Channing Tatum's musical/tap-dancing sailor stint, are a sheer delight.

Hail Caesar!'s story is all about Mannix's journey: the daily crisis that's his work and the hilarious guilt over sneaking a few cigarettes to calm his nerves infuriates his priest who tells he confesses too often over too little. Brolin is the center of Capitol's wheel and this film, his steady nerves keeping us awake, and it's great to see him move from one disaster to another. Brolin's particularly good when paired with Clooney near the end, who's really acting with only one half of his immeasurable talent. In O Brother, Where Art Thou, Clooney ran wild, uttering now famous lines that still find their way into my weekly conversations; here, he's just another plot device on Brolin's To-Do list. The rest of the cast too is hilarious one minute and then horribly bored/boring the next. Johansson and Hill aren't needed at all here, and they're not around enough to be of any worth. I truly wanted more of Fiennes, who returns to his now-classic Budapest Hotel shtick. He and Ehrenreich would have been a hilarious duo in their own movie; instead they're sandwiched in for too few moments together.

Hail Caesar! still manages to entertain, even though I found myself imagining funnier versions of every joke. That's never a good sign when you're paying money to see professionals doing less than your imagination. But don't blame Cinematographer Roger Deakins for any failures: his camerawork is as always impeccable, capturing the old school movie lots along with a hilarious half-naked statue who's missing his torso. Deakins also bathes every scene in gorgeous colors, while the sumptuous costumes and set designs capture the splendor of the period. Like those old films, everything's great until you peel back the real motivations of the characters, few of which hold and water or our attention.

Entertaining in many parts but thoroughly boring in others, Hail Caesar! is a decided miss, although a semi-glorious one that reminds us of this team's recent string of failures. It's hampered by its own fetish for the Hollywood system, content to divert us on great occasion by storylines that aren't necessary and moments of mirth that I found myself re-writing. Don't expect these creative geniuses to go away, but don't plan on this one occupying your favorite lists at year's end.

Hail Caesar! is rated PG-13 for some suggestive content and smoking and has a runtime of 106 minutes.

Movie Review: #THECHOICE Nicholas Sparks has done it again!

Nicholas Sparks has done it again!

Rama is back with another review.

THE CHOICE is everything you’d expect from a Nicholas Sparks adaptation. It’s a reach-for-the-kleenex textbook romantic drama for females everywhere many of whom have read Sparks’ books a thousand times over. Boy meets girl, but girl is meant to marry someone else, boy and girl are supposedly not in the same income bracket, and they live in small town U.S.A near a body of water, either lake or ocean. Benjamin Walker and Teresa Palmer's chemistry is endearing.

Ladies man, Travis Shaw (Benjamin Walker) encounters and falls for a strong-willed medical student named Gabby Holland (Teresa Palmer). But Gabby already has a long-term boyfriend, and so “The Choice” chronicles the relationship between Travis and Gabby that would ultimately be tested by life’s most defining events.

There’s not much to say about this really, because if you’ve seen other movies based on Nicholas Sparks’ books, you’ve pretty much seen THE CHOICE. But I don’t mind, I keep coming back to this, even though I’m not a hardcore romantic drama fan, only because with Sparks, we know what we’re getting and there's something comforting about that. What others might consider predictable, Sparks fans call it reliable. Sparks has become a constant brand that doesn’t let them down when they come to get a good cry.

The battle to win the girl’s heart in THE CHOICE is not as heaven-and-earth like “The Notebook,” the tragedy that happens in the third act feels too separate from the rest of the events prior, and I wouldn’t label veterinarian a small time country boy because last I checked, and you can correct me if I’m wrong, a veterinarian makes decent money. So who knows, perhaps after so many romantic books and their many adaptations, perhaps even Nicholas Sparks himself has fallen victim to his own successful pattern, but will he lose his romantic edge? I doubt it. THE CHOICE does exactly what it’s supposed to do, it’s that regular old journey through the emotions of the mushy, butterflies in your stomach, lovey dovey puppy and the heartbreaks, and regrets, guilt, and falling in love over again.

#KeiraKnightley To Star In Biopic "Colette"

Before the likes of Madonna and Cher earned fame with just one name, there was French writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, who went by the single moniker Colette. Now Still Alice co-director Wash Westmoreland is preparing a biopic of her, and has Keira Knightley close to a deal to star.

Westmoreland wrote the film with his late husband and fellow Alice writer/director Richard Glatzer and will be calling the shots. The biopic will focus on Colette's marriage to celebrated Parisian scribe Willy Gauthier-Villars, who was 14 years older than his wife when they married in 1893 and one of the most notorious libertines in Paris. During their time together, he introduced her to some of the more avant-garde circles and encouraged both her literary prowess and her love for women. After their separation in 1906, her writing career truly took off and she became known for works such as Gigi, Cheri and the Claudine series of books. A mime, an actress and a journalist at various points in her career, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1948.

You can see why the filmmakers and now Knightley might be attracted to the story, and it has the backing of Bold Films and HanWay Films, the latter of which worked on Carol.Pam Koffler, Christine Vachon, Elizabeth Karlsen and Empire video blog stalwart Stephen Woolley are all on board to produce, and Westmoreland is scheduled to start shooting this May in Budapest.

Kim Basinger Joins Fifty Shades Darker

Following on from the success – box office, if not completely critical – success of Fifty Shades Of Gray, Universal has acted quickly to start adapting the other two books of E.J. James' trilogy. And the first new cast member for the story is now on board, with Kim Basinger joining Fifty Shades Darker.

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson are back as star-crossed and naughty bits-whipped lovers Christian Gray and Anastasia Steele, join by fellow returning cast members Luke Grimes, Eloise Mumford and Max Martini.

Basinger, she'll be Elena Lincoln, Christian's business partner and the woman who taught him everything he knows in the boardroom and the bedroom. Given that she first met him when he was 14, Anastasia somewhat naturally nicknames her "Mrs. Robinson". Niall Leonard – AKA Mr. E.L. James – has been working on the script with his wife, with James Foley on board to direct both this and Fifty Shades Freed.

Movie Review: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Genre hybrid is a failure from Austen to Zombies.

Review by Brandon Wolfe

The concept of zombies shambling their way into the prim-and-proper realm of Jane Austen is a fitfully amusing one. It might have made an agreeable SNL sketch. The book in which the mash-up was birthed seems to have its fans, but the film version of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies most certainly does not work. It’s a curious misfire, where it’s difficult to imagine even how it might have worked, in a theoretical sense, given that once you get past the novelty of the logline, there isn’t really anywhere left to go.

Based on the novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, who has managed to parlay this gimmick into a very happening screenwriting career, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies offers precisely what its title promises, which is to retell Austen’s story with the undead peppered into it. Once more, it’s 19th century Britain and the Bennet family, a brood bustling with five daughters, is making the acquaintance of the handsome and wealthy Mr. Bingley (Douglas Booth) and his far less sociable friend, Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley). Mr. Bingley strikes up an instant, mutual infatuation with the eldest and prettiest Bennet daughter, Jane (Bella Heathcote), while Mr. Darcy immediately finds himself on the bad side of the headstrong Elizabeth (Lily James). The family’s matriarch (Sally Phillips) is driven by the desire to successfully marry off all of her daughters to eligible suitors, and soon a foppish boob of a clergyman, Mr. Collins (Doctor Who’s Matt Smith, the only actor here attempting to have or provide any fun), comes calling, also desiring Jane, but willing to settle for another, lesser Bennet. Soon after, the relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy runs from cold to hot while the bond between Jane and Bingley hangs in the balance.

And now there are also zombies. All of the original novel’s romantic complications now take place against the backdrop of a zombie apocalypse. London has become a walled-off city with only one bridge left standing to connect it to the outside world. The Bennet sisters are all trained in the martial arts and skilled with blades. Mr. Darcy is a professional zombie hunter, using special flies to ferret out the living dead. Victorian refinement finds itself mussed by blood and viscera. The film also attempts to carve out some new ground in zombie lore, though none of it makes much sense. These zombies are intelligent upon their initial transformation, only distinguishable from the living due to whatever cosmetic damage they have sustained. They are articulate and capable of strategizing. They only grow into the more familiarly mindless breed after having feasted on brains enough times.

But putting all of that aside, this is still very much Pride and Prejudice first and foremost. To an almost shocking extent, actually. The film plays the Austen material completely straight, as though no less than ‘90s Kenneth Branagh were responsible for it. This is not the absurd horror-comedy hybrid one might have expected. The zombie material is very much secondary in pertinence, and there are entire scenes where someone, at a passing glance, would have no reason to think this was anything other than the umpteenth adaptation of the literary classic. Its idea of innovation is to take the scenes of Elizabeth and Darcy verbally sparring and incorporate physical sparring into them as well. The film simply sets zombies loose into the proceedings without allowing it to alter the original story all that significantly.

And maybe that’s the point? There is some novelty at the kernel of this, and maybe the book managed to crack the code for how to make it fly, but it’s difficult to watch Pride and Prejudice and Zombies without wondering just who it was intended for, or who will even enjoy it. “Janeites” will find the zombie element juvenile and distracting, horror fans will be bored to tears by the starchy love story and the film doesn’t mesh the two ingredients together in such a way that the mixture becomes its own unique concoction. The film isn’t funny, it isn’t scary and it isn’t moving. It isn’t really anything, beyond a showcase for handsome period costuming. Apart from Smith (and, to a lesser extent, James and the raspy Riley), none of the other actors, or characters, make any impression whatsoever, and there are quite a few of them. This is also a profoundly inept zombie film, its PG-13 rating rendering it mostly free of gore (The Walking Dead provides more carnage in single scenes than you’ll see in this entire film). You watch this movie and realize that you’re in the presence of a rare bird: a movie made for no one.

The new music documentary on the Japanese rock group X JAPAN titled 'WE ARE X'--from Passion Pictures--has been accepted to the SXSW Film Festival happening March 11-19 in Austin, TX. Following the world premiere screening Sundance, YOSHIKI--songwriter, drummer, classically-trained pianist and the creative leader of X JAPAN--stated, "The dark doors I had closed from my past became an entrance to the future. If there wasn't music and the band members would not have been there, it's clear I would not be here today."

During Sundance week, YOSHIKI thrilled audiences performing at live venues including the official Sundance Festival Base Camp and the ASCAP Cafe playing classical versions of X JAPAN's songs with a string quartet.Following the'WE ARE X' film premiere, Chef Dance hosted a dinner honoring the film prepared by Los Angeles-based chef Louis Tikaram (of EP & LP). The group reformed in 2007 and have released three singles: "I.V." in 2008, "Jade" in 2011 and "Born To Be Free" in late 2015. They've been touring worldwide ever since and in October 2014, the group performed their debut Madison Square Garden show in New York before announcing the new album and 'WE ARE X' film releases slated for 2016.

X JAPAN--YOSHIKI (drums/piano/composer), TOSHI (vocals), PATA (guitar), HEATH (bass), SUGIZO (violin/guitar) alongside their fallen brothers HIDE (guitars, 1987-1997) and TAIJI (1986-1992)--are currently laying down tracks in a Los Angeles studio for their as-yet-untitled album, which is due for a worldwide release in late 2016.

About X JAPAN:
X Japan is the most successful rock band in Japanese history, and that is not a statement made lightly. The band has sold more than 30 million albums; singles and videos combined, sold out Japan's 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome 18 times - so far - and have played to tens of thousands of fans outside of Japan. In the band's early days their look and sound sparked a global interest in entertainment, especially with the Japanese cultural rock phenomenon, "Visual-Kei," a movement X Japan pioneered that spread globally.

X Japan formed in 1982 (calling themselves X) by Yoshiki and Toshi while they were still teenagers. Over the next 13 years, the band released five studio albums--Vanishing Vision (1988), Blue Blood (1989), Jealousy (1991), Art of Life (1993) and Dahlia (1996), as well as six live albums, ten best hits albums and 20 DVD releases. X Japan was the first Japanese band to achieve mainstream success while signed to an independent label. The band was so popular they became a cultural phenomenon.

In the fall of 1997, at the height of their success, the band broke up. Four months later, Hide, X Japan's original lead guitarist, was found dead in his Tokyo apartment. At his funeral, more than 50,000 fans came to mourn his passing. In early 2007 Yoshiki and Toshi resumed communication and later that year X Japan officially reformed. The band launched its reunion in 2008 with 3 nights at the Tokyo Dome. 2 years later, X Japan filmed a music video on the rooftop of Hollywood's Dolby Theatre with a throng of some 8,000 U.S. fans taking part in the shoot on Hollywood Blvd. But it was on August 8, 2010 that X Japan performed in front of a mainstream American crowd for the first time at Lollapalooza. Immediately following the festival, X Japan played the biggest concert in its history, selling out two consecutive shows at Japan's Nissan Stadium, filling 140,000 seats. The band's first North American tour wrapped with a monumental New York date selling out The Roseland Ballroom on Oct. 11, 2010.

In June 2011, X Japan kicked off a European Tour at London's Shepherd's Bush (selling -out the venue in 30 minutes). The tour continued to Paris and Utrecht wrapping in Berlin before the band traveled back to Japan to play the famed Summer Sonic Festival. That same year the world tour took them to South America where they sold out shows playing to massive crowds in Santiago, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Lima and Mexico City. X Japan then returned to Asia playing arena shows in Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei and Bangkok. In 2012 X Japan was the first Japanese band to take home the prize for "Best International Band" at the Golden Gods Awards held in the U.S.
In 2014 X Japan headlined a colossal show at New York's famed Madison Square Garden in the U.S. Now, in 2016, X Japan is gearing up for the biggest event in the band's history. The current line-up of X Japan is Yoshiki/drums, piano; Toshi/vocals; Pata/guitars; Heath/bass; and Sugizo/guitars,violin. X Japan recently announced the release of the band's 1st new studio album in 20 years, which will be available in worldwide release late 2016.

Sacramento’s @MonsterJam Review: Freestyling Testosterone!

Sacramento’s Monster Jam Review: Freestyling Testosterone!

Sandwiched in between massive Monster Trucks and flying shrapnel, we bared witness to mass destruction within the Sleep Train Arena. The Monster Jam tour stopped nearby our headquarters in Sacramento on Friday, January 29 for an explosive new competitive points-paying endurance showdown, featuring extreme driving skills from a very impressive Monster Jam truck line-up. The Monster Jam Teams were Grave Digger®: Morgan Kane Max-D®: Colton Eichelberger Scooby-DooSM: Bailey Shea El Toro Loco®: Kayla Blood Monster Energy: Coty Saucier ZombieSM: Travis Groth New Earth AuthoritySM: Tyler Groth Blue Thunder®.

I brought my six-year-old boy, who loves Scooby Doo, so he naturally took quite the liking to this brown truck with the female driver. All were thrilling to see jump over dirt ramps, high into the air and often crash, flip, blow out a tire or take on other forms of abuse. Best of all, a couple of the vehicles sustained so much damage that their exterior truck shells disintegrated around them, leaving the drivers exposed within their crude metal frames.

Headlining the tour were eight Monster Trucks, Monster Jam Speedsters, and Monster Jam ATV’s. The Speedsters and ATVs were fine fun they took up a bit too much time. Each Monster Jam athlete competing against one another in seven different endurance competitions driving these three different motorsports vehicles to earn valuable points during each new event discipline and pushing their machines to the ultimate limit!

This was my first Monster Truck show and even though I was warned that it would be loud, I didn’t expect it to be louder than a heavy metal concert. It was! So if you are planning on going soon, be sure the little ones have well-working, noise-reducing headphones. Although at times the sound bordered on annoying, the thrilling truck-jumps and destruction overshadowed the eardrum abuse. While our ears suffered a bit, our eyes were rewarded. extreme Truck freestyling, fast spinning donuts, and wheelies kept us firmly planted in our seats.

At the end of the show, spectators are welcomed down to meet the star athletes for autographs and take photos! For more information of upcoming Monster Jam shows and ticket prices, go to https://www.monsterjam.com.
