Moneyball Trailer

Today we got our hands on the first trailer for Moneyball, the film directed by Bennett Miller and starring Brad Pitt, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright and Jonah Hill, also starring Chris Pratt and Casey Bond. It is based on the true story of Billy Beane, general manager of the Oakland Athletics, and his attempt to create a competitive team despite Oakland's unfavorable financial situation. The film is based on the 2003 book of the same name written by Michael M. Lewis.

The film is set for release on September 23, 2011.

Based on a true story, Moneyball is a movie for anybody who has ever dreamed of taking on the system. Brad Pitt stars as Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland A’s and the guy who assembles the team, who has an epiphany: all of baseball’s conventional wisdom is wrong. Forced to reinvent his team on a tight budget, Beane will have to outsmart the richer clubs. The onetime jock teams with Ivy League grad Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) in an unlikely partnership, recruiting bargain players that the scouts call flawed, but all of whom have an ability to get on base, score runs, and win games. It’s more than baseball, it’s a revolution – one that challenges old school traditions and puts Beane in the crosshairs of those who say he’s tearing out the heart and soul of the game.

The Art of Getting By Movie Review By: SandwichJohn

The Art of Getting By Movie Review
By: SandwichJohn

I was able to attend an advance screening of this film earlier this week and going into the film I wasn't expecting much. Didn't really know a whole lot about the movie other than Charlie (Freddie Highmore) from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was in the film, and Emma Roberts was also starring in the film.

I was pleasantly surprised by the film and the performance that Freddie Highmore pulled off. The movie itself had that independent film feel to it, camera moving in motion with the actors and just a gritty feel to it. I could have seen this film come out the same time as the classic 80's film like Some Kind Of Wonderful and Less Than Zero. But not up to the same level as the previous films mentioned.

The story is a coming of age film that we all have seen before. A teenager slacker with no life ambitions or goals in life. Until he meets the girl of his dreams and then everything is game.

Freddie Highmore portrays the character George, a high school senior who has become the schools resident slacker with no goals in life. During the whole story you wonder what made him this way. Futher into the film we find out more about what has lead him down this road.

George is near the end of the rope at school and may not graduate. We do get a glimpse at George drawing in class when he should be paying attention to his teachers. And he has talent. By chance George is at the right place and right time when Sally (Emma Roberts) needs his help and George covers for her. Sally is your typical high school princess with plenty of friends and gets invites to all the cool parties, but there is something about George that draws her to him. Once they build this friendship it is obvious that George starts to have feelings for Sally, who wouldn't. The prom queen wants to be friends with the frog.

George is your typical teenager in most ways, a good kid but does have his outbursts towards his family (Rita Wilson and Sam Robards), which is in need of some counseling.

Another actor who proves he's come into his own with this film is Michael Angarano (Sky High) who plays Dustin, an artist that becomes a mentor to George.  From the first day they meet at the high school's career day they form this unique bond. In the film your not sure if Dustin is out for himself or a true friend to George.

There were defiantly parts in the film that made you scratch you head, like how can an 18 year be in a bar and order a drink and no one card them? Or when they attend a party at a night club and they are popping bottles of champagne. If you can get away with this in New York I wish I would have known this while I was in high school.

The ending of the film is pretty predictable, but for a coming of age film this one holds up on it's own.

Hugh Jackman To Star In Les Miserables The Film

Hugh Jackman is in talks to star Universal and Working Title’s big-screen musical adaptation of Les Miserables, to be directed by The King’s Speech helmer Tom Hooper.

If a deal makes, Jackman would play Jean Valjean, the man who steals bread to feed his sister and spends the ensuing years in prison (or trying to escape it) while also becoming the guardian of a young woman named Cosette, all against the backdrop of the French Revolution.

William Nicholson wrote the script. The story is based on the Victor Hugo book but best known to millions as one of the longest-running musicals around.

Les Miz, as it’s lovably known, would be the first time that Jackman, a singer and dancer with a Tony Award for his role in The Boy from Oz, would perform on the big screen. The actor was scheduled to reprise his role as Wolverine in a sequel that was to have shot later this year, but the lack of a director on the project has thrown a wrench into that timetable.

Green Lantern Movie Review By: Joe D

Green Lantern Movie Review
By: Joe D

I was able to attend Wednesday night’s advanced screening of Green Lantern! It was practically a dream come true! I finally get to see my most favorite comic hero up on the screen in real life 3D!

To say I am a huge Green Lantern fan is almost an understatement. My collection of Green Lantern comics, toys, statues, rings, and other sorted collectibles spans the last 20 years. When I heard that they were finally making a Green Lantern movie, I was beside myself with glee. I think a giggly school girl ‘Tee-hee!’ may have even been involved. With baited breath I waited for anything and everything I could find out. As concept art and cast decisions were announced I became more and more excited.

I’ll be honest. A few of the choices had me curious. I realized that when making a live action GL flick, certain details have to be taken into consideration. Making the aliens we GL fans are all too familiar with, come to life; avian Tomar Re, robotic Stel, and our beloved Drill Sergeant Kilowog, to name a few, could have been disastrous.

Once the initial previews hit and I was able to catch glimpses of a lot these characters and places like Oa, most of my fears were put to rest. But one thing remained. Would I enjoy Ryan Reynolds portrayal of the greatest Green Lantern, Hal Jordan? Reynolds has, for the most part, portrayed very similar characters in most of his movies… the wise-cracking, smart-ass.. This is NOT Hal Jordan. But, I resigned to postponing judgment until I saw the movie.

Onto the movie!

The movie begins by introducing those that are unfamiliar with the concept of the Green Lantern with an opening monologue from Tomar Re (voiced by Geoffrey Rush). It’s a nicely detailed, quick history on what the Green Lantern Corps is and I felt that for those that weren’t in the know, it provides some good information to get you involved.

We get introduced to Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), wise-cracking, ace fighter pilot. Here’s where my concerns started to come in… and for the most part, are proven right. I thoroughly enjoy Reynolds in just about everything he does. Comedy after comedy, he’s had me laughing. I became even more impressed with him when he stretched his acting chops in “Amityville Horror” and “Smokin’ Aces”. He proved that he could be serious and hard-edged and that’s what allowed me to see him as Hal Jordan. Hal Jordan is a serious, focused character that isn’t known for snappy, Spiderman banter and quips. Sadly, Reynolds’ Hal is keyed more towards ‘Berg’ and ‘Van Wilder’ than ‘George Lutz’ and ‘Richard Messner’. Though, to be fair, Hal does become more focused towards the end. He realizes that it’s up to him to save the planet, Parallax and a lack of help, being the catalyst for new-found responsibility and Hal begins to take his new role much more seriously.

Another item that made the movie drag a bit were Hal’s interactions with Carroll Ferris (Blake Lively). While Lively portrays a decent Ferris both in look and attitude, I felt that the interaction between the two of them, in the ‘romantic’ scenes was kind of shoved down our throats a little too much. The bar scene, for example, could have been a little shorter. Other than that, I was good. Ferris will always be Hal’s ’Love,’ and a small nod towards the Violet light was a neat thing to catch.

Of the existing Green Lanterns… we get Sinestro, Kilowog, and Tomar Re at the forefront. Sinestro (Mark Strong) takes on some aspects of his comic persona faithfully, others… not so much. He believes in his Corp and its strength, however, I feel that he was a bit too much “fanatical warrior” and not enough “self-confident pomp”. But it worked.

Kilowog (voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan) and Tomar Re (again, Geoffrey Rush) were nice to see. Kilowog, the demanding drill instructor, beating Hal down and trying to break him was balanced by Tomar Re’s wisdom and insight into why Hal was selected for the Corps. I hope to see more of them if we get a sequel.

Hector Hammond, portrayed by Peter Sarsgaard was alright. He was more of a link to the overall evil versus being one of Hal’s greater earthbound enemies. He’s portrayed as a meek nobody with confidence and daddy issues, who, when he finally comes to power, doesn’t get to do much. But, Sarsgaard portrays meek and daddy issue laden well.

Angela Bassett is always a pleasure to see. Unfortunately, her portrayal of one of DC’s most conniving government agents, Amanda ‘The Wall’ Waller, is rather lack luster. I’ll blame that on the writing. Plus, I think I’d rather see CCH Pounder play Waller… not only is she physically perfect to play Waller, it would have been a nod to her time voicing Waller on ‘Justice League’ and ‘Batman Beyond’.

I would have loved to have seen more time dedicated to Hal’s training on Oa. We get to see Kilowog train Hal, and then some with Sinestro… but not enough. I would have liked to see Hal go through more training… a time lapse to show progress, a montage, something to see him gain more control over his ring. He only goes through what feels like a few hours, getting his green butt handed to him by Kilowog and Sinestro, and then he’s back to Earth making race cars and catapults. Just didn’t feel right.

I would have loved to have seen more of the alien Lanterns. More Kilowog and Tomar Re would have been nice sure, but, with all the designs we’ve been seeing and all the ads and standees with Boodika, Salaak, Stel, R’amey Hol, Iolande… we get no more than a flash here and a glimpse there. If we get a sequel, I’d definitely like to see more of Hal interacting with other Lanterns.

All in all, I got what I expected and I was entertained. It was a fun movie to watch with some really excellent visuals, a few good laughs, and story with enough in it to get those that don’t know much about Green Lantern, into it. A few tweaks here and there, and it could certainly have been even better, but I’m ok with it. Will I be seeing it again? Yes. I’ll try to leave my nerd-rage at the door and enjoy it more.
Oh… and sit through the first chunk of the credits… there’s some more to watch that I felt capped the movie well. I don’t think that they could have ended this movie without what happens, happening.

Could "This is 40" Starring Chris O'Dowd Be Judd Apatow Next Movie?

I started to follow funny man Chris O'Dowd on Twitter once I took in Bridesmaids. So one day he asked for fans on twitter to ask him questions. And most of the time when you reply to stars they don't take the time to response to you. But this wasn't the case.

Chris tweed-@BigBoyler: Anyone interested in a Q & A with ireland's 312th tallest man?

I proceed to ask him what his next film would be?

His response-

@SandwichJFilms not sure... Probably 'This is 40'... Another Judd film, which is a delight.

Now could this be the film that deadline is reporting about? Deadline reports that Jon Hamm and Melissa McCarthy are set to star in an untilited film that will be produced by Judd Apatow. Did I some how grab a scoop by asking a simple question on Twitter?  Could  "This is 40?" be Apatow's next film?

The power of the internet, amazing.

This is proof it never hurts to ask.

From the time “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” debuted on Starz in January 2010, it established itself as an epic production with rich storytelling and visuals unlike anything seen previously on any TV show. Ben 10 Heading To Big Screen

Producer Joel Silver's massive Hollywood career has been built on grown-up action, but it looks as if the projected audience for at least one of his future projects will skew younger, since he's planning to bring a "big-budget, tentpole, live-action" Ben 10 to cinema screens.

Ben 10, if you've missed it so far, is a hugely successful Cartoon Network series that's been running in various incarnations since 2005. It's about a boy, Ben Tennyson, who comes into posession of a watch-like device that allows him to transform into various superpowered aliens (ten of them... but not all at once). Naturally he uses his new-found abilities to nut up and fight evil, with the help of his granddad and his sister.

There've been three separate series and a couple of spin-off live-action TV movies already: both directed by Alex Winter (yup, the one from Bill And Ted) and starring Graham Phillips as Ben the first time, and Ryan Kelley the second. The new version will be entirely re-cast though, which is a shame since it means we won't get to see Lee Majors as Grandpa Max.

Silver was introduced to the series by his sons, and, says Turner Animation COO Stu Snyder, "I can't imagine anyone better suited to develop a theatrical action-driven adventure based on our franchise."

If you're wondering if he'd still feel that way if he'd seen a certain relatively recent Wachowski Brothers kids' movie... everyone's way ahead of you. "I tried something similar to this once before with Speed Racer and failed miserably," Silver admits. "But you learn muc

Ellie Kemper Joins 21 Jump Street

Anyone who enjoys the US version of The Office knows that Ellie Kemper has proved to be a great addition to the cast. And she also provided some solid laughs alongside Kristen Wiig and co in Bridesmaids. Now she’s scored another decent role, signing on to the cast of 21 Jump Street.

Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are directing the film right now in New Orleans, with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum playing police officers assigned to work undercover in a local high school to break up a drugs ring.

Kemper will play Ms Griggs, a sweet, if sometimes annoyingly sincere chemistry teacher who finds herself attracted to Tatum’s character and is apparently unable to figure out why he seems older than her other students. And it’s a slight comedy reunion for her and Hill, since she had a memorable moment in Get Him to the Greek.

The rest of the cast includes Ice Cube, Brie Larson, Rob Riggle, Dave Franco, Johnny Simmons, Dakota Johnson, DeRay Davis and Jake M Johnson. Oh, and some bloke called Johnny Depp, who kick-started his career appearing in the TV show that the movie’s based on, will also apparently cameo.

Russell Crowe In Talks To Play Jor-El In Man of Steel

Russell Crowe is negotiations to play the Kryptonian father of Superman in Man of Steel, the Zack Snyder-directed relaunch of Warners and Legendary’s Superman franchise.

The casting of heavyweight Crowe in the role has a ring of synchronicity to it as it harkens back to the casting of heavyweight Marlon Brando in Warner's 1978 Superman movie.

Brando was famously paid $3.7 million dollars in the mid-1970s for the part that amounted to 15 minutes of screen timea and two weeks' worth of work. Details of how large the role (a scientist who forsees the destruction of his planet and squires his infant son into an escape rocket bound for Earth) is in Man of Steel are not being revealed.

Steel already has Kevin Costner playing Jonathan Kent, the human father of Superman, who is being played by Henry Cavill.

Christopher Nolan is producing the movie, which is heading for a late summer or fall start in Vancouver.

Sean Penn and Clive Owen were reportedly considered for the role.

Huge Surprises In Store For Entourage's Final Season

With Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) wife-less and perhaps already back on the singles market, is a reunion with ex-girlfriend and movie exec Dana Gordon just a matter of time? "What happens with us is what I think fans have been hoping would happen at some point," Constance Zimmer, who plays the "female Ari," tells TV Guide Magazine.

"It could be a little raunchy!"

Zimmer revealed that in the eighth and final season, all of the characters will be exploring territory we haven't witnessed before.

"[They] dive very deep into their inner cores of who they are as people, which we haven't been able to see,"

"We've seen a lot about the work and the industry, and this is about what these people are deep down and what they've been missing in their lives."

The season, which includes guest stars like Bobby Flay "stirring up a little bit of trouble" for Ari and Dana and Andrew Dice Clay interacting with Drama, will also include shocking twists that caught Zimmer off guard. "There's a huge surprise that happens. When I read it I was like, 'Oh my God! I did not see that coming,'" she tells us. "There's one [surprise] in the second episode. And then there's one in the second to last. And there's one in the third episode having to do with me."

And when all is said and done, the last season will leave the doors open for that much talked about feature film. "It definitely ends in a way where you're going to see all of the characters, and wonder, 'now what happens?!'" says Zimmer, adding that the movie seems like more than just a possibility. "Now that we've gotten to this place in their lives, you're definitely going to want to see more."

The new season of Entourage premieres July 24 on HBO.
