First Clip From 'I Saw the Light' Starring Tom Hiddleston As Hank Williams

Tom Hiddleston as country music legend Hank Williams is a pretty enticing proposition. The Brit takes on the iconic role in Marc Abraham’s “I Saw the Light,” which is set for a world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this week.

Hiddleston debuted the first clip from the film himself via Twitter. It features Williams at a 1947 recording session of “Move It on Over” before transitioning to life at home with wife Audrey Mae (Elizabeth Olsen, who I hear is also exceptional in the film).

Abraham is best known for his work as a producer on films such as “Bring It On,” “Spy Game” and “The Last Exorcism.” He’s seven years removed from his directorial debut, “Flash of Genius,” another biopic.

Hiddleston can also be seen in Toronto selection “High-Rise” from director Ben Wheatley. He’ll be hitting theaters next month with Guillermo del Toro’s “Crimson Peak.”

Movie Review: The Visit

Prepare for some grandparent-abnormal activity.

Review by Brandon Wolfe

Observing M. Night Shyamalan’s career over the past 16 years has been akin to watching a once-bountiful balloon leak air at a steady pace. His breakthrough film, The Sixth Sense, was an exceedingly well-crafted piece of work, skillfully written, directed and acted across the board. His follow-up, Unbreakable, perhaps lacked a small amount of that same craftsmanship, but still stood as a sterling effort. But then Shyamalan cranked out a progressively inferior assemblage of films, from the uneven Signs to the inert The Village to the risible Lady in the Water. By the time he unleashed the disastrous The Happening upon the moviegoing populace, it was curtains for any cachet he once enjoyed. An M. Night Shyamalan film was no longer a tantalizing event brimming with cinematic promise. His very name had become a warning label, a helpful alert for prospective buyers of an inferior product.

After a couple of swings-and-misses at big-budget summer fare, with the twin failures of The Last Airbender and After Earth, Shyamalan returns to his horror roots with The Visit, a microbudget found-footage film released by the ubiquitous horror assembly line Blumhouse Productions. The film centers on the Jamison siblings, sullen amateur filmmaker Becca (Olivia De Jonge) and her extroverted younger brother, burgeoning lothario and freestyle rapper Tyler (Ed Oxenbould), who live with their harried mother Paula (Kathryn Hahn in a light-lifting bit part). The kids seek out their grandparents on the Internet, whom they have never met due to their mother’s 15-year estrangement from her parents after an event from her youth that she refuses to talk about. The kids set up a weeklong visit, which Paula grudgingly agrees to given that it will afford her the opportunity for some much-needed R&R on a cruise with a new beau. Becca and Tyler kiss mom goodbye, board a train and are off, with Becca filming everything for a documentary she’s making about the experience of finally meeting her elders.

Nana and Pop-Pop (Deanna Dunagan and Peter McRobbie) greet the kids upon arrival and seem warm and congenial at first blush. Once the kids are settled in at the grandparents’ house, Pop-Pop cheerfully advises them that, because he and Nana are old folk, bedtime is at 9:00 and that the kids should probably not wander out of their rooms after 9:30. Kids being kids, they don’t heed this guideline and a cookie-seeking Becca witnesses Nana projectile vomiting all over the floor downstairs. The kids encounter a mounting stream of odd events each night, and even into the day, with Nana scratching at the walls in the nude, scuttling around the floor like an animal and cackling at the wall. Pop-Pop explains away everything as the result of “sundowning,” where the setting sun affects the mental state of the elderly. However, he too begins exhibiting peculiar behavior, storing used adult diapers in the barn, placing the business end of a shotgun in his mouth and assaulting an innocent passerby on the street. As their grandparents’ oddness continues to escalate, Becca and Tyler have to discern where run-of-the-mill elderly dementia ends and life-threatening danger begins.

The Visit is an odd fit within Shyamalan’s oeuvre. The stripped-down, overly familiar found-footage aesthetic is at odds with the much more classically polished films he has delivered up to this point. Shyamalan has always held himself as an intricate storyteller and The Visit is more of a simplistic cheap-thrills offering. But beyond just the stylistic incongruity with his previous work, The Visit is also a strikingly odd blend of comedy and horror. With The Happening, the director crafted a straight-faced thriller with seemingly zero awareness of how unintentionally hilarious everything transpiring onscreen was coming across. Here, Shyamalan is acutely aware of the presence of comedy and recognizes the absurdity inherent in his premise, which he consciously mines for queasy laughs. The Visit frequently functions as a sick-joke black comedy, in line with something like 1989’s Parents as much as it is with its more obvious modern antecedents, like Paranormal Activity. Shyamalan isn’t even afraid to go for a truly lowbrow gag, as when the contents of a diaper are shoved into a child’s face, something that wouldn’t seem out of place in an American Pie-style gross-out comedy.

But here’s the most peculiar thing: The Visit kind of works on both of its divergent levels. It is unnerving and unsettling while also being frequently very funny, on purpose. It often accomplishes both feats simultaneously, as when Nana fixes Tyler with a death glare after catching him gleefully mocking her late-night hallway traipsing, or during a deeply uncomfortable game of Yahtzee. The film walks the tightrope between the two settings fairly adroitly, conscious of the horror inherent to witnessing one’s relatives (and, in this case, children’s sole guardians) behaving irrationally, while also not turning a blind eye to the fact that old people doing zany things is something destined to come across as goofy. The Visit somehow manages to function as both an effective horror movie and a workable black comedy, in equal measure.

However, this is not to say that The Visit is an unqualified success. For starters, the film seems to confuse the actions of those with late-stage dementia with those possessed by the demon Pazuzu, and one would think Paula, despite all the years of silence, might want to at least touch base with her parents before shipping her kids off to them for a week. More pertinently, as a found-footage film, it reaps the benefits of the subgenre’s strengths – primarily the dropping of the cinematic veneer that creates a buffer between the viewer and the events onscreen – while also falling victim to many of its clumsier tropes. There are plenty of jump scares and figures suddenly appearing in the frame when the camera quickly pans to the side. There is also the requisite lack of logic as to why imperiled camera operators continue to film while immersed in dangerous situations.

Moreover, there are the usual horror-movie bugs in the machine, in terms of idiotic character actions. The Jamison kids will witness something wholly disturbing one night and then subsequently be shown eating breakfast with Nana and Pop-Pop the next morning, absent the concern they should clearly be feeling. There are so many points when it’s clear that the kids desperately need to alert the authorities or make a break for the nearest neighboring home, but that point never comes. Even when they finally realize that they need to keep their distance from the grandparents, Becca continues to return to the house to conduct her one-on-one interviews with them for her film. And then, at a crucial moment, Becca makes the baffling choice to explore the house’s dark basement alone. Almost 20 years after Scream, horror-movie protagonists are still making the same bonehead decisions.

The Visit sees Shyamalan again embrace his fondness for the big twist, as what’s going on with Nana and Pop-Pop is not as straightforward as it initially seems. Shyamalan has gotten saddled with the label of “the twist guy” ever since The Sixth Sense, but in truth, The Village is the only other film in his catalogue that tried to melt your brain. The Visit even starts to tease out a supernatural element after a point, as when Pop-Pop starts babbling about an entity with yellow eyes and Nana brings up aliens, and it isn’t initially clear if these are yet more incoherent ravings or key pieces of information. But after the resolution of the film’s climax, there’s a lingering feeling of “is that it?” Shyamalan seems to think that the big takeaway should be a coda where the characters learn that long-standing resentment between family members should not be left to fester for so long, but tacking this life lesson onto a horror movie about crazy old people trying to kill you feels like a transplanted organ that the host body rejects.

Still, all told, The Visit is Shyamalan’s strongest film in many, many years. It might not result in a reversal of his misfortunes, as it represents a perfect storm of things audiences have come to reject out of hand, namely M. Night Shyamalan films, found-footage films and comedy-horror hybrids. However, it does represent a promising course-correction for him as a filmmaker. After he exploded into the limelight, Shyamalan was heralded by many as the next Spielberg or the next Hitchcock, and his subsequent work is that of a man who clearly allowed that acclaim to go right to his head, to the point where he could no longer recognize bad ideas because geniuses don’t have those. The Visit stands as a necessary humbling for Shyamalan, a quick-and-dirty affair bereft of any and all loftier intentions. Humility, as it happens, is a good look on him.

Marvel’s #JessicaJones Premiere Announcement Trailer

It feels like we’ve been waiting a long time to hear when we’ll be able to see Marvel’s Jessica Jones, the next series in the set of four launched by Daredevil this year, on Netflix. The wait, for the date at least, is over, as the streaming service has announced a November 20 launch.

Based on Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos' Alias comics run, the Marvel universe tale is focused on Jones, a woman still picking up the pieces after a short-lived stint as a superhero. Suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after using her powers (super strength, amongst others), she decides to leave the life behind. But she doesn’t entirely forsake her past: she opens up a New York detective agency, which tackles cases for both ordinary people and superheroes.

Melissa Rosenberg has been running the show on this one, which also features Mike Colter as Luke Cage (who is starting work on his own show now) David Tennant as Zebediah Kilgrave AKA “The Purple Man”, with the ability to control minds and a yen for psychopathic behaviour, plus Rachael Taylor, Carrie-Anne Moss, Erin Moriarty, Eka Darville and Wil Traval. Rosario Dawson will also appear as Claire Temple to offer some connective tissue between the shows.

We have our fingers crossed for this one – hopefully it’ll continues the high standards set by Daredevil and provides a different angle on superhero stories.

#REDWOLF #1 Cover Art & Variant Cover. MARVEL’S PREMIER NATIVE-AMERICAN HERO

RED WOLF #1 – MARVEL’S PREMIER NATIVE-AMERICAN HERO RECEIVES NEW ONGOING SERIES!

The Marvel Universe’s American Southwest now has a superhero to call its very own – the mysterious new hero, RED WOLF! Recently seen within the pages of Secret Wars’ 1872, this new hero is suddenly thrust into the new Marvel Universe as its latest righteousness defender no matter what it takes! An outsider and an honest man, Red Wolf is going to need all his wits, and both his fists, to serve and protect this new world from the corrupt organizations that want to control this already stifling landscape of the gritty and harsh American Southwest.

Series writer Nathan Edmondson (Black Widow, Punisher) is joined by artist Dalibor Talajić (Uncanny X-Force, Empire of the Dead) and cover artist Jeffrey Veregge, a member of the Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe based out of Kingston, Washington, who's also of Suquamish and Duwamish decent. Veregge will also be providing consulting when it comes to characterization and design for the new series.

"There's not a character like Red Wolf out there right now," Veregge told Mashable at the time of the series announcement. "As a native, I’m really excited to see that he can do things, he can figure out things and stand with Captain America, and hold his own in this universe. That’s what’s awesome about it: You have all these characters of different nationalities and ethnicities, but it’s not all about their culture. It’s about them being a hero."

There’s something about that harsh terrain of the American Southwest that requires an adaptable, thoughtful, resourceful hero, and that’s Red Wolf all over,” said series editor Jacob Thomas. “He doesn’t have amped up strength or tech, he’s got quick wits, hard fists, and an unshakeable sense of justice. Underestimate him at your own peril.”

This December, the new Marvel Universe gains a new hero who pledges to never let the crushing hands of ruthlessness control those who cannot defend themselves. Red Wolf is here to keep order and maintain peace…no matter the cost.

First Image Of Matt Damon As #JasonBourne

If you were waiting for rock solid proof – despite word of Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon returning and a flurry of recent casting – that the Jason Bourne films are really, truly back, then wait no longer. Thanks to producer Frank Marshall, we have the first image of Damon as Bourne from the set.

And Damon certainly does seem to be in lithe fighting shape – leaner and meaner than in 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum. There is still no proper plot synopsis for what the former government asset will be up to this time, though Damon has said it’ll reflect our financially risky times and is firmly set in a post-Edward Snowden world. Take that for what you will, but the last time we saw him, Bourne was doing some whistleblowing of his own, releasing the information about the illegal program codenamed Treadstone that created him and then going firmly off the grid.

With Julia Stiles back as Nicky and Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones and Vincent Cassell aboard.

#CHRISHEMSWORTH INTERVIEW FOR MARVEL’S AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON DIGITAL HD & DISNEY MOVIES ANYWHERE RELEASE

AN INTERVIEW WITH CHRIS HEMSWORTH FOR THE IN-HOME RELEASE OF MARVEL’S AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Marvel Studios unleashes the next global phenomenon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Good intentions wreak havoc when Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) unwittingly creates Ultron (James Spader), a terrifying A.I. monster who vows to achieve “world peace” via mass extinction. Now, Iron Man, Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) – alongside Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) – must reassemble to defeat Ultron and save mankind.

With the Blu-ray ™, Digital HD and DVD of Marvel’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron about to be released, we talk to actor Chris Hemsworth– who plays Thor in the movie – to discover his thoughts on the action-packed adventure…

What’s new about your characters in Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron?

CHRIS HEMSWORTH: In Age Of Ultron, we see a more grounded, earthly version of Thor than we have in the past. It is nice because there are a few more opportunities to showcase some humor and see him in some casual gear instead of the red cape and armor.

Read the entire interview after the Jump...

How does it feel to portray a different version of the character compared to the Thor we’ve seen in previous movies?

CHRIS HEMSWORTH: I wanted to get back to the fun he had in the first film. I wanted to make him a little more grounded. I wanted to humanize him a bit. It’s very easy for these characters to become un-relatable and exist off in the stratosphere – but this was about making him more human. You can see this in one of the first scenes where the rest of The Avengers are trying to pick up his hammer in casual clothes. You think, ‘What do these guys do when they’re not saving the world?’ Well, now you know. That was fun for me. Any time we got to do things like that and to play around, that was the best part for me.

What’s Thor’s role in The Avengers in the new movie?

CHRIS HEMSWORTH: He’s a central part of the team now and there’s certainly a unity that they’ve all formed now as a group. They are solid. Thor sees the bigger picture of the current conflict that’s going on. There’s the initial battle, which they’re all involved in, but Thor uses his Asgardian knowledge and starts to tap into some otherworldly possibilities and threats that he thinks are coming.

What was it like to welcome new cast members to the superhero cast?

CHRIS HEMSWORTH: Joking aside, they were awesome. It was cool to have new people on set. You almost get too comfortable when you know everyone’s rhythms – but then a few new people are thrown in the mix and it gets disrupted in the best way. That’s why I think people love this film even more so than the first one. I love the new additions.

Ultron [played by James Spader] is another new character introduced in Marvel’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron. How would you describe the character?

CHRIS HEMSWORTH: The character of Ultron was one of the first times on any film where I had really no idea what that character was going to look like and how that performance was going to be played out. But the first time I saw James [Spader] perform in character, it just all made sense. The writing is all very tricky in terms of his speech cadences and rhythms. He also has sarcasm and irony to him, yet is highly intelligent. It’s a beautiful mix.

What was it like to have James Spader on the set?

CHRIS HEMSWORTH: I remember the first time he came on set, too. He did this big monologue and when he was done we all applauded and forgot our lines because we were so captivated by what he was doing.

How would you describe the look of Marvel’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron?

CHRIS HEMSWORTH: We’ve gone to far more locations than we’ve ever been to before and we’ve covered more ground than ever before, so aesthetically it’s going to be a mash-up of a whole lot of different locations and styles and images. Everything has been dialed up. Even the complexity of the story has gone deeper. We’ve seen all these characters evolve in the individual films, but to see them come together a second time is pretty exciting.

The start of the movie sees the superheroes working together in The Avengers Tower. What was the set like for those scenes?

CHRIS HEMSWORTH: The Avengers Tower was an incredible set. In fact, it was one of the most impressive sets I’ve ever been on. It’s Tony Stark’s house, so it had to be big, high-tech and flashy – and it was. It was also the first set that the entire group shot on together, so it was nice to be in that kind of setting to shoot the party scene there and all of us be together and catch up.

Who were your favorite superheroes when you were growing up?

CHRIS HEMSWORTH: Superman was probably the only film like that I had seen when I was growing up. It’s the one that sticks out for me. Iron Man hadn’t been created yet, or Captain America, or Hulk, or Black Widow, or Vision.

#MADWOMEN Digital Release On October 10th

Jeff Lipsky’s controversial and critically acclaimed sixth feature “Mad Women” will be digitally released, for rent or download, on Amazon and Vimeo-on-Demand, on October 10th.

Mad Women” is a dark satire about Harper Smith, a middle-aged mom who, following a one-year prison sentence for having committed an act of conscience, becomes a local hero and folk legend in her small community of Iris Glen, NY. She runs for local office but has much grander aspirations up her sleeve. She is a woman accustomed to personal challenges: She lost her third child at the age of three to cancer, her first-born daughter, a pediatrician, is in Ukraine having joined Doctors Without Borders, her own mother lost an eye in her youth in an archery mishap, and her husband, a successful and beloved dentist, commits statutory rape under the influence of LSD at a rock concert. It’s up to Harper and her middle daughter, Nevada, to persevere, and they do, as a most unlikely mother/daughter bond emerges.

About the genesis of “Mad Women” Lipsky explains: “I began writing MAD WOMEN in early 2013, just after President Obama’s second inaugural, moments after a season of political drivel came to an end, and seemingly seconds before cable outlets began their non-stop palaver about the 2016 election. So I set out to conjure up my personal candidate, one whose idealism can’t be blunted, even as the world would be playing whack-a-mole with her. When I finished the script I knew there could never be a ‘Harper Smith.’ But now that Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump are front-runners, well, now I’m not so sure anymore!”

“Mad Women” marks the third consecutive collaboration between Lipsky and co-star Reed Birney (“House of Cards,” 2014 Tony Award nominee “Casa Valentina”). It also spotlights three extraordinary actresses – Kelsey Lynn Stokes, Christina Starbuck, and Sharon Van Ivan (John Cassavetes’ “Opening Night”) and marks a reunion for Lipsky with Jamie Harrold who co-starred in “Flannel Pajamas.” Lipsky’s previous films include “Twelve Thirty,” “Molly’s Theory of Relativity,” and “Once More With Feeling,” which along with “Flannel Pajamas,” have starred Justin Kirk, Julianne Nicholson, Jonathan Groff, Mamie Gummer, Chazz Palminteri, Drea deMatteo, Linda Fiorentino, Cady Huffman, Rebecca Schull, Halley Feiffer and Barbara Barrie.

“MAD WOMEN” Review Excerpts…
"Jeff Lipsky’s live-action film 'Mad Women' is also a campaign cartoon. Lipsky confronts the political and sexual kinkiness of public figures like Hillary Clinton and those who might vote for her. His protagonist, Harper Smith (Christina Starbuck), runs for mayor of a fictitious New York town and makes wild promises “to secede from the United States of America . . . These are human ideals and I will not turn my back on them!” Harper’s wacky platform hides the extremism of her personal life (a criminal history, a jailbird husband, a wayward daughter, and some private horrors and transgressions). Mad Women runs may be the year’s oddest indie film for its uncanny view of some subcultural unease (or disease). “All paradigms begin with crackpots,” Lipsky’s heroine harps. “Revolution isn’t easy.” Lipsky goes for straight-faced satire like Harold Pinter’s and against the dishonest nostalgia of TV’s Mad Men, as well as the “feminist” hypocrisy recognizable in Hillary zealots. After surveying so many indie-film social pretenses in his earlier career as a producer-distributor, Lipsky knows the language — and madness — of bourgeois solipsism, and that, as with the caricatures of Minions, is Mad Women’s lingua franca. “
-Armond White, National Review

“ ‘Mad Women’ pushes the boundaries of morality. Mr. Lipsky is skilled at creating taboo-busting characters and letting them reveal themselves in the kinds of long, detailed scenes actors love. Reed Birney and Christina Starbuck are exceptionally good. Its eclectic characters certainly linger.”
-Neil Genzlinger, The New York Times

“With Mad Women, Jeff Lipsky dares us to rethink desire. In this universe, every relationship—especially between family members—has a sexual component and every core memory (to borrow—blasphemously—from Pixar’s Inside Out) represents a stage in the acquisition of a sexual identity. Most if not all of those stages are like traumas frozen in time. It forced me to rethink the way sexual desire saturates everything, along with extreme vulnerability of children. I don’t like backing down from a movie that challenges me.”
-David Edelstein, New York Magazine

#JohnGotti Biopic Starring John Travolta May Finally Happen

Deadline is reporting After a series of false starts, the movie about notorious New York City crime boss John Gotti and his relationship with the son who followed in his footsteps is back on solid footing. Kevin Connolly has been set to direct, with John Travolta still aboard to play Gotti Sr. The financing has been firmed by Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films, Fiore Films and Herrick Entertainment. Lionsgate Premiere will release the film domestically through its multi-picture deal with E/F/O. Travolta and Connolly will make the trip to Toronto to stoke interest in foreign sales as this movie moves toward a January production start.

It is the latest development in the run up to a Toronto Festival that has buyers sparked not so much by must-have completed acquisition titles playing in the festival, but by projects that will be shopped for pre-buys. Many of the hottest festival films were pre-bought and arrive at Toronto with distribution already spoken for.

While the early missteps taken on Gotti–Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Lindsay Lohan, Kelly Preston and Anthony Hopkins were all linked to it at one time or another along with filmmakers Nick Cassavetes, Joe Johnston and Barry Levinson before shaky funding imploded each version after splashy press conferences–there is no denying that the story is compelling.

John Jr sold his life rights to the project and that informed a script that is in large part a father-and-son story set in the backdrop of an iconic organized crime family in New York. The elder Gotti was a Gotham tabloid fixture known as the Dapper Don for his impeccable designer suits, and also the Teflon Don for all the times the federal government came at him and failed to get a conviction. He was finally undone when his right hand enforcer, Sammy “The Bull” Gravano testified against the boss. Gotti died in prison of cancer. Gotti “Junior” (he was actually John Gotti III) followed in his footsteps, some would say reluctantly, though law enforcement claimed he became acting boss of the Gambino crime family after his father was deposed. After serving time for racketeering, he told his story to 60 Minutes and has said he is long retired from that life.

Connolly is the Entourage star who grew up on Long Island reading about Gotti on the front pages of the Post and Daily News, and who did a nice job directing the ESPN 30/30 docu Big Shot. That told the story of John Spano, the Dallas businessman who actually completed an acquisition of the New York Islanders, until he was exposed as a con man. Connolly also directed episodes of Entourage for HBO and helmed the small film Gardener of Eden. This is a potential big step up for him. It is not clear whether any of those other attachments will follow through (Ben Foster at one point was in talks to play Junior). Given the heightened interest in Johnny Depp playing Whitey Bulger in the festival film Black Mass, and the success of mob films from Goodfellas on down, there seems to be a strong appetite for well-told mob movies and this is one of the most iconic gangsters in recent memory, with violence to match any of those other films.

The Highland Film Group is handling international sales. The most recent draft of the script is by Leo Rossi and Lem Dobbs, who developed it under producer Marc Fiore. The film’s producers include Randall Emmett, George Furla, Norton Herrick and Fiore. Co-producers include Tim Sullivan and Tony Callie of EFOF and Ryan Black of Grindstone. Barry Brooker and Stan Wertlieb of Lionsgate will executive produce alongside Wayne Marc Godfrey and Robert Jones of The Fyzz Facility, who are co-financing as part of their ongoing credit facility with EFOF.

E/F/O produced the Michael Polish-directed 90 Minutes in Heaven that opens Friday, and is an exec producer on Everest, which Universal releases September 25th. Herrick’s film credits include Lone Survivor and 2 Guns.

This emotion runs through the entire community of young gays, lesbians, drag queens and trans people who populate the Stonewall Inn and erupts in a storm of anger. With the toss of a single brick, a riot ensues and a crusade for equality is born.

STONEWALL will open in theaters in September 25, 2015

Ronda Rousey To Star In Road House Remake

Say it ain't so. I love her as a fighter but hate her as an actor.

According to Variety UFC fighter Ronda Rousey is starring in MGM’s reboot of the 1980s cult classic “Road House.” Rousey will step into the role Patrick Swayze made famous.

Sources say MGM is currently meeting with screenwriters, with production set to begin in 2016.

Released in 1989, the original film starred Swayze as a bouncer hired to clean up one of the rowdiest, loudest bars in Missouri, The Double Deuce. Swayze’s character is put to the test when he needs to protect the town from a corrupt businessman.

The movie became a breakout hit and still has reached cult status today. This follows MGM’s reboot of another classic; the “Rocky” spinoff “Creed” hits theaters in November.

Rousey embraced the idea of starring in a remake, but wanted to be respectful when pursuing the project. Sources say Rousey recently reached out to Swayze’s widow, Lisa Niemi, to ask for her blessing, which Niemi gladly gave.

The project would mark Rousey’s biggest acting gig to date. This will be the fourth project being specifically developed for Rousey to star in, following her biopic “My Fight/Your Fight” at Paramount, “The Athena Project” at Warner Bros. and the STX action pic “Mile 22,” which has Pete Berg on board to direct. Production for the latter is set to start in February, following Rousey’s next fight against Holly Holm on Nov. 14.

Rousey has already had a busy year at the cinema, appearing in “Furious 7” and the “Entourage” movie after a cameo in last year’s “The Expendables 3.”
