An Edgier Snow White Coming Our Way

An Edgier Snow White Coming Our Way

The billion dollar worldwide gross of Alice in Wonderland has turned public domain fairy tales into the hottest segment of an otherwise sluggish script marketplace. In the latest deal, Relativity Media has made a preemptive acquisition of The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, an edgy 3D re-imagining of the German folk tale written by Melisa Wallack.

The deal has aggressive progress to production stipulations in the preemptive deal and I'm told the writer will make low seven-figures if the project gets made.  The Brothers Grimm: Snow White will be produced by Bernie Goldmann (who produced Meet Bill), Ryan Kavanaugh and Brett Ratner, with Tucker Tooley exec producing and Rat Entertainment exec John Cheng also involved in a producing capacity. Ratner previously got Kavanaugh to acquire the Sundance Film Festival documentary Catfish, and most recently Skyline, the scifi alien invasion thriller directed by Greg and Colin Strause which sold at Cannes.

Deal follows an upfront seven-figure Disney pitch deal for Devil Wears Prada scribe Aline Brosh McKenna to script a re-imagining of Cinderella. Disney also is moving quickly on The Great and Powerful Oz, with Adam Shankman and Timur Bekmambetov circling. Sam Mendes just dropped out of consideration, but there is rumor that Guillermo del Toro might meet on the project now that he's free of The Hobbit. Warner Bros and New Line each have version of Oz that are based on the public domain books by L. Frank Baum.

All of the incarnations of Snow White are based on the German folk tale, but this one hews closely to the distillation by the Grimm Brothers.

"This is not your grandfather's Snow White," Ratner said. "Melisa went back to the 500 year old folk tale and put in some of the things that were missing from Walt Disney's film. His dwarves were miners, and here they are robbers. There is also a dragon that was in the original folk tale. Walt made one of the great movies of all time, but ours is edgy and there is more comedy. The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we're going to do."

Said Kavanaugh: "This is a project we've aggressively pursued and believe in. We love Melisa Wallack's script and her fresh take on the classic story we all grew up on. This film will bring together fans of the original fair tale and draw new audiences who enjoy adventure films."

Blood Oath Book Review By: Beevers

Blood Oath Book Review
By: Beevers

Blood Oath by Christopher Farnsworth is not just another vampire book. For those of you who are tired of the Twilight mania (even those of you that are not) and like a good vampire story this is the book for you. The premise of the book is that the great protector of the President and the United States is a vampire that was pardoned by Andrew Johnson in 1867. After his pardon he is forced to take a blood oath binding him to the President of the United States and to protect the nation against all threats. In the beginning of the book we also meet Zach Barrows, the young ambitious deputy director for White House affairs, who has been assigned by the President to be the new human liason for Nathaniel Cade, the president's vampire. Zach's first response to meeting Cade is to wet his pants. This is the kind of reaction that I think most people would have is in fact they were to meet a vampire which is one of the things I love about this book. Although it is about an unbelievable topic the responses of the characters in the book are believable.

Farnsworth has said that the idea for the book came from the true story of Andrew Johnson's pardon of a man accused of being a vampire which can be found in the book The President's Vampire by Robert Schneck which looks into the story first introduced in the book Wild Talents by Charles Hoy Fort. The story is that Andrew Johnson pardoned the man who was convicted of killing two men and drinking their blood and that he spent the rest of his days in an insane asylum. But as Farnsworth has said in interviews what possible reason could Andrew Johnson have for giving this man a pardon and wouldn't vampire be a pretty great tool for the President of the United States to have. Wouldn't you agree?

If you think that a vampire is the worst of the supernatural beings that could threaten the United States then think again. This book will introduce you to some truly disturbing and extremely scary characters much worse than werewolves or Frankenstein's monster, although both are in the book. This book will be the first in a series of books revolving around the adventures of Nathaniel Cade. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

The Expendables Second Trailer

IGN brings us the second trailer for the upcoming action film The Expendables starring an All-Star cast. The trailer focuses more on naming all of the action stars that are in this movie, it reminds you that this is a once in a life time film, to get all of the great action stars in one film.

The Expendables is a hard-hitting action/thriller about a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things aren’t quite as they appear, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. With their mission thwarted and an innocent life in danger, the men struggle with an even tougher challenge – one that threatens to destroy this band of brothers.

Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) is a man with nothing to lose. Fearless and void of emotion, he is the leader, the sage and the strategist of this tight-knit band of men who live on the fringe. His only attachment is to his pickup truck, his seaplane and his team of loyal modern-day warriors. His is a true cynic who describes what he does as “removing those hard to get at stains.” The team behind him is made up of Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), former SAS and a savant with anything that has a blade; Yin Yang (Jet Li), a master at close-quarter combat; Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), who has known Barney for ten years and is a long-barrel weapons specialist; Toll Road (Randy Couture), a skilled demolitions expert and considered the intellect of the group; and Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), a combat veteran and an expert in precision sniping who struggles with his own demons.

When the mysterious Church offers Barney a job no one else would take, Barney and his team embark on what appears to be a routine mission: overthrow General Gaza (David Zayas), the murderous dictator of the small island country of Vilena and end the years of death and destruction inflicted on its people. On a reconnaissance mission to Vilena, Barney and Christmas meet their contact Sandra (Giselle Itie), a local freedom-fighter with a dark secret. They also come to learn who their true enemy is: rogue ex-CIA operative James Monroe (Eric Roberts) and his henchman Paine (Steve Austin). When things go terribly wrong, Barney and Christmas are forced to leave Sandra behind, essentially giving her a death sentence. Haunted by this failure, Barney convinces the team to return to Vilena to rescue the hostage and finish the job he started. And to perhaps save a soul: his own.

Star Wars World Cup 2010 Ad

Star Wars World Cup 2010 Ad

The Adidas commercial for World Cup 2010 has gotten creative. In collaboration with Lucasfilm, they’ve managed to combine footage from Star Wars with special appearances by David Beckham, Daft Punk and Snoop Dogg. Can you name who else makes a guest appereance?

“To seamlessly integrate new shots of David Beckham, Snoop Dogg and company into original Star Wars footage, a set was created to replicate the original dimensions of that bar featured in the film. This enabled the performers to work realistically with the props, make the correct eye-lines and so on. Where they were required to interact with Star Wars characters, stand-ins were used to ensure a realistic performance. The color palettes and lighting conditions of the new shots were also carefully chosen so they could be easily blended with the original footage. To bring the new ad up to date, television screens featuring a football match together with various pieces of football memorabilia were also created and added to the bar scene.

Software called Flame was used to composite (superimpose) the old and new shots together and remove old characters from the footage – taking care to blend the edges and make the joins seamless. Finally, the film was graded by The Mill’s colorists using a grading system called Baselight to ensure that both the original cinematic footage and newly shot HD footage matched and the overall effect was flawless.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger Documentary Coming Soon

New Arnold Schwarzenegger Documentary Coming Soon

We get word today from the guys over at the TheArnoldFans that there maybe a new Arnold Schwarzenegger Documentary coming out very soon.

They got an exclusive interview with the director of both Pumping Iron films, George Butler, and during their long chat, they learn that this film maker will at last complete his trilogy. TheArnoldFans made sure to get every possible detail we could from the pre-production conceptual development that Mr. Butler has in mind. Although I learned that Arnold Schwarzenegger himself purchased and owns all the rights to the original Pumping Iron film and all the out-takes, George Butler has other ideas how another film can still be made.

Here is a few of the highlights from their interview with Mr. Butler to read the rest of the story Gooooo visit the Balliest Arnold Fan Site in the WORLD Here.

Pumping Iron

TheArnoldFans: George, even though Arnold now owns all the original Pumping Iron footage, what are the odds a you can still produce another sequel?

George Butler: Well, the thing that I could do is, I've got somewhere between six and seven thousand photos of Arnold that I took between 1972 and 1985 or so, and these days you can make an entire movie out of the stills. Only about 150 have ever been seen. Bob Kennedy's magazine did a big issue recently which you may have seen and I gave him about 8 unpublished photos.

This is roughly the same as if someone photographed Marilon Monroe when she was 14 through the age of 25, when she started to become a star. Because I took the bulk of the pictures before anyone knew who Arnold was and I took them during the peak of his bodybuilding fame which was when he was in the best shape of all. These photos are completely candid and I took them all over the world so, in theory, I can make a photo out of these stills and put in stock footage and do a series of interviews including Arnold and others.

TheArnoldFans: Yes, you must do this! Will this be done in the next couple of years?

George Butler: Yes, maybe the next couple of years. I mean it would take me a year to do it. I'd have to take the time off from my regular film-making and I've got plenty of films to make at the moment.

TheArnoldFans: As far as all those photos, did he ever say which ones he wouldn't want you to release?

George Butler: Here's what I did, when I sold the movie, Pumping Iron to Arnold, Arnold said to me, 'George, there's a certain number of photos that you took done for Playboy and etc, which I prefer not to see published.' So I said to him 'send me a representative of yours and they can look at ALL the photos I have and they can edit out the pictures they don't want published.' I can think of about 50 photos then that came OUT of my collection and they were appraised for a million dollars... and I gave them to Arnold.

TheArnoldFans: I understand you sold the footage of Pumping Iron to Arnold but who owns the rights to the name? In other words, if you put out a movie with these 6,500 photos of Arnold, can you call the new film Pumping iron 3? Or does Arnold own the Pumping Iron name?

George Butler: He owns the name Pumping Iron but I do still own the name rights to Pumping Iron 2. A new film would be advertised as "from the director and producer who made Pumping Iron." The title itself can be anything but not legally Pumping Iron because Arnold owns that name. But fitting may be that I call it "Arnold's Rib" as from the bible, a name taken from Adam and Eve in the garden of paradise and God made Eve out of Adam's rib. I don't know, If I came up with the name Pumping Iron, I can come up with something equally as good.

Rediscovering the Essential Superman By:jonathancyfer

Rediscovering the Essential Superman
By:jonathancyfer

We want to welcome guest writer jonathancyfer to the site and we are looking forward to adding him to our sandwich family.

In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) discussed his role as "mentor" for the upcoming Superman film reboot, scheduled for release during the 2012 holiday season. One of the most widely circulated statements made by Nolan was:

"What you have to remember with both Batman and Superman, is that what makes those the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who those characters were when they were created and when they were first developed. And you can't ever move too far from that."
There is a tremendous amount of speculation regarding what form the new Superman film will take. Assuming that Nolan will have more than a passing amount of influence on the movie franchise's rebirth, perhaps we can understand the upcoming Superman film by taking a look at what made Batman Begins (2005) such a success.

In the vast world of comicdom, both Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent are now believed to have roamed the world, seeking out specific experiences as a form of training, prior to establishing their “alter ego” identities. This is not only spelled out for us in the Batman Begins film but was previously established in the WB Batman animated series. During the 1990s, the DC comics Superman line periodically referred to a period of time after Clark left Smallville and before donning the cape, where he also travelled extensively, helping people with his powers in secret, much as Clark in the TV series Smallville does as "the Blur".

This was less of a preparation for becoming the "formal" Superman and more of Clark's expression of his understanding that he had a higher purpose for his powers. He could extend his abilities in the service of humanity, yet maintain his anonymity, isolating Clark Kent the man from the super being. He only became a costumed hero in fact, when he was forced to save a "space plane" from crashing and couldn't take the time to hide his appearance (See Superman: The Man of Steel #1 1986). The Supeman identity became the mask that kept the “human” Clark Kent safe.

Television's Smallville only somewhat mirrors this pre-Superman period and the mid 1980s limited "Man of Steel" series, which launched the comic book reboot of Superman and followed the Clark's journey, from first donning the costume to the discovery that he isn't from Earth. While Smallville, by definition, cannot take Clark into the realm of the costumed hero, could this journey be leveraged into the 2012 Superman film? If you look, the reboot’s tentative title is “Superman: The Man of Steel”.

The comic book reboot of Batman chronicles a similar path for Bruce Wayne. Both Batman: Year One (1987) and Superman: Man of Steel show their respective heroes as "diamonds-in-the-rough", not the polished, experienced superheroes they would become in later years. Both men struggle with establishing their presence in relation to their perceived "missions" in the world, and both struggle with the possibility of failure. Part of what makes a hero so attractive to the rest of us is that they're portrayed as emotionally vulnerable in some sense. It's how we can access someone and relate to them, even though they have "powers and abilities far beyond mortal men.”

Many of the elements from Batman: Year One were incorporated by Nolan into Batman Begins, giving us not only an “origin story” but the entire context for Bruce becoming Batman and the nature of the environment and the people who figured into every aspect of Wayne’s early experiences. Nolan’s treatment of this material in film immediately appealed to the Batman comic book fan while at the same time, gave a raw and fresh perspective to the larger movie audience. You couldn’t assume that any of the specifics from previous film and television incarnation s of Batman would apply. What Nolan delivered was what makes Batman great: the elemental struggle of the Dark Knight not only with the external evil of the world but the shadows within himself.

As much as the Richard Donner vision of Superman is loved and cherished, the same as Christopher Reeve's portrayal of the Last Son of Krypton, the saga on both the big and small screens has been layered and complicated to the point where it surrounds the legend of Superman like a straight jacket. It's time to take Superman back to the essence of who he is and rebuild his world as well as our sense of wonder and adventure. What, at the core, makes Superman the hero we have loved for over 70 years? It’s my hope that Christopher Nolan and the creative team responsible for Superman: The Man of Steel will answer that question.

The Crow Reboot Is On It's Way

The Crow Reboot Is On It's Way

We have word on Stephen Norrington's reboot of The Crow. To whit (no wait, that's an owl), according to producer Edward R Pressman, shooting is expected to start this year, and "things are moving ahead very aggressively".

"We've got an offer out to a major actor," says Pressman, tantalisingly. He also teases that this will be a very different film to the Alex Proyas / Brandon Lee original from 1994. "Steve has created a very different visual idea," we're told, with Avatar production designer Rob Stromberg's sketches apparently looking quite unlike what's gone before.

There will be two locations, an urban centre (possibly Detroit, like the original) and a South-West setting, which suggests that, maybe, The Crow is flying into Western territory that might suit the formula (wronged murder victim back from the grave to exact revenge on the perps) rather well. Wicked Prayer, the last of the increasingly bad original sequels, already went there, but we've chosen to forget that.

Mythology-wise, it sounds like Norrington is returning to James O'Barr's graphic novel, with Pressman promising that "The Crow itself is a character in this movie: it's not just a bird. It's got a personality... and a more active role in the story." The (talking) Crow in the book acts as both the hero Eric Draven's guide, and his harshest critic. "It's not like Godzilla, exactly" says Pressman, peculiarly. Maybe that statement made more sense in context.

"It's a different time and a different idea," Pressman concludes. Sounds like the same idea but with tweaks to us. But the director of Blade returning to goth-action-horror territory has got us quite excited anyway.

Metal Gear Solid Film What's The Deal?

Metal Gear Solid Film What's The Deal?

With all the video games being made into films, Metal Gear Solid is up there on my wish list to get made.

According to writer David Hayter, here's whats going on.

They’ve been trying to work out a deal between [creator Hideo Kojima] and [Sony]. A couple of years ago, a producer friend of mine asked me if I would be interested in doing the adaptation. And I said ‘Of course. I know it pretty well.’ I think I can say without contradiction that I know it better than any screenwriter on the planet. I’ve said every word that Snake has said. So I felt well-qualified
So he wrote the script for the film, turned it in and all of a sudden.... nothing happened. There are no real details about why the film adaptation fell through. It's reported that it could be due to political reasons on Konami's (the game publisher) side. Hayter adds,

On top of that, I don’t believe they were ever able to successfully close a deal between Mr. Kojima and Sony. This is all just stuff I’ve heard.
So from what it sounds like Konomi and game creator Hideo Kojima never had a solid deal in the first place. Maybe they were waiting for the script to come in, and once they read they decided not to proceed. As for that script here what Hayter had to say about it.

I did come up with a pitch for the movie which I thought was pretty cool and I would still love to do. But there are far larger issues in terms of who’s going to get the rights to do it and what sort of involvement Mr. Kojima is going to have. All that needs to be worked out before I would ever come up.

I really want to spring some things on people. Having been intimately involved with ‘Metal Gear,’ I would like to give people a story that will grab the fans. The fans will know the context that we’re talking about once they see the trailers. They’ll say ‘Oh my god, they’re going there.’ But they won’t quite know how the story is going to unfold or what some of the big surprises are going to be. And that’s really the only way to keep a movie [adaptation] interesting

Christopher Nolan Talks Superman Reboot

Christopher Nolan Talks Superman Reboot

In the latest issue of Empire magazine Christopher Nolan had comments to share on David S. Goyer and the upcoming Superman reboot he's penning and producing.

Nolan had this to say;

“..What it is, while David Goyer and myself were putting together the story for another Batman film a few years ago, you know thrashing out where we might move on from the Dark Knight, we got stuck. We were just sitting there idly chatting and he said ”by the way, I think I know how you approach Superman”.. and he told me his take on it. I thought it was really tremendous. It was the first time I’ve been able to conceive of how you’d address Superman in a modern context I thought it was a really exciting idea. What you have to remember about Batman and Superman is that what makes them the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who they were when they were created, when they were first developed. You can’t move too far away from that.”

Nolan speaks of how well Goyer has figured out a way to put Superman in a present day setting, in a post- 9/11 era. Nolan also speaks of how you can't move too far away from how Superman has been since his creation and I know one thing Goyer is good at is his dark writing style so I do wonder how this will turn out. Goyer was quoted a few years back saying this;

“In the case of Blade, he is acting heroically, but the rest of the world thinks he’s a vigilante. As is the case with Batman. … I don’t think I’d ever be good to write Superman because it is the opposite… [the interviewer says "he's angst free"] Yeah. And I wouldn’t know the angle because I’m so angst ridden so I wouldn’t know what to do with a character like that.”

ThunderCats Is Returning To TV In 2011

ThunderCats Is Returning To TV In 2011

That's right you heard it correct ThunderCats will be making a return to TV in 2011 on the Cartoon Network. If I am lying then I am Dying.

(June 3, 2010 – Burbank, CA) – Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) has begun production on “ThunderCats,” an all-new animated series for Cartoon Network, based upon the iconic 1980s action classic. “ThunderCats” is the newest series from WBA, joining “Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” which was recently renewed for a third season, and the following forthcoming programs: “The Looney Tunes Show,” “MAD,” “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated” and “Young Justice.” The announcement was made today by Sam Register, Executive Vice President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Animation.

“In addition to being Warner Bros. Animation’s first anime series, ‘ThunderCats’ marks our most ambitious foray yet into fantasy,” said Register. “The realism and dynamic visual style we’ve achieved are sure to thrill viewers, and the cool weapons, vehicles and technology should help the show appeal to a diverse audience.”

The 21st century reimagining of the series marks a creative collaboration between WBA and Studio4°C, one of the most vibrant animation studios in Japan, with credits including “The Animatrix,” “Gotham Knights” and “Halo Legends.” WBA is working closely with Studio4°C, utilizing the latter’s expertise to give the “ThunderCats” characters a new cutting-edge look while remaining true to the compelling storylines and mythology of the original series.

“We at Studio4°C are excited to be in this creative partnership with Warner Bros. Animation to bring ‘ThunderCats’ to life,” said Eiko Tanaka, President and CEO, Studio4°C. “This collaboration combines the strengths of our two companies – high production values and great storytelling – toward reintroducing this classic fan-favorite to a new audience.”

Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, “ThunderCats” characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.

The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

“ThunderCats” is executive produced by Sam Register (“Teen Titans,” “Ben 10,” “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”). Michael Jelenic (“Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” “Wonder Woman”) and Ethan Spaulding (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”) are the producers.

Captain America's Costume Details

Captain America's Costume Details

Captain America's iconic costume has been spotted in the wild, and it has been messed with.

The guys over at JoBlo has had a look at the suit Chris Evans will be wearing in the upcoming film Captain America: The First Avenger, and though he can't share any images from the costume tests, he does reveal some rather surprising changes from what you might be familiar with.

Cap's famous temple wings? Gone!

Those trademark wings that have come to represent Captain America as much as his shield? Looks like we won't be seeing them.

In fact, Cap's hood is gone, too.

Replacing it is an Army helmet that comes over Cap's eyes to give him a traditional superhero "domino mask" look, with a black strap that wraps over his ears and under his chin.

He's got an old-school utility belt

Cap's belt will be doing more than just holding up his pants—we'll be seeing a Batman-style utility belt, with brown pockets and a silver buckle.

There'll only be TWO white stripes across his torso

Instead of the alternating red and white stripes across Cap's torso, we'll see two red utility straps acting as stripes over a white base. These straps connect to to a metal loop at the midpoint of the chest and from that point, a black strap extends up to the shoulders.

And if he has to go to the bathroom he can

Unlike in the comics, the pants aren't skintight—though they aren't baggy either. And the pants have a fly, so Cap can take care of other needs besides fighting World War II.

Antoine Fuqua To Direct A Tupac Biopic

Antoine Fuqua To Direct A Tupac Biopic

Training Day director Antoine Fuqua has confirmed that his next movie will be a biopic about rapper Tupac.

Fuqua revealed that the project has just been greenlit by Morgan Creek chairman James G. Robinson and will go in front of cameras later this year.

"It looks like we're doing Tupac Shakur's movie next in September, that's what I've been starting up and working on now," he said. "I've been working on that for a while with Morgan Creek and Jim Robinson. I just got the greenlight from him and we're going in September. I've just started to prep that."

Fuqua added that he is hoping to find an unknown actor to portray the iconic hip-hop star, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996.

"That's the goal, I want to discover someone new," he explained. "I want to discover a lot of new people if I can. Obviously I'm going to have to put some people in it that you know, just because actors have different skills. I want to go to the streets and find him anywhere he might be in the world."

Ken Watanabe To Direct WWII 442nd Film

Ken Watanabe To Direct WWII 442nd Film

Ken Watanabe to make his directorial debut soon, Watanabe was introduced to most Western audiences with the 2003 film The Last Samurai for which his performance as Katsumoto earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Watanabe is mostly known in Japan for playing samurai, as in the 1987 Dokuganryu Masamune (One eyed dragon, Masamune) the 50-episode NHK drama for which he is now best known. He played the lead character, Matsudaira Kurō, in the television jidaigeki Gokenin Zankurō, which ran for several seasons. He has gone on to earn acclaim in such historical dramas as Oda Nobunaga, Chushingura, and the movie Bakumatsu Junjo Den.

It is said that Oscar nominee Watanabe is in early talks to direct a WWII drama titled 442nd.
This independent would be his directorial debut and it’s based on the true story of “an American-Japanese military unit assembled during World War II and sent on virtual suicide missions in the European theater. For their efforts against the Nazis, that unit go on to become the most decorated unit in American military history.”

Wow, I definitely find the logline intriguing, I sure hope this ends up more than just a rumor. Because it sounds like an important project that demands to be made.
Producer Bill Gerber (Gran Torino) is assembling 442nd, with Roar, the management and production company that represents Watanabe

Toy Story 3-Groovin' With Ken

Toy Story 3-Groovin' With Ken!

Last year at Comic-Con we got our first look for Pixar's upcoming Toy Story 3. We were privileged to get a look at this featurette called Groovin' With Ken! to help promote Toy Story 3. The video was done in a fun retro 70's style.  Ken is being voiced by Michael Keaton, which I think is awesome.

The film hits theaters on June 18th 2010.

Mr. Nice Trailer Starring Rhys Ifans

Mr. Nice Trailer Starring Rhys Ifans

Mr. Nice is a 2010 British comedy and drama film directed by Bernard Rose, and starring Rhys Ifans (The Replacements/Notting Hill) and Chloë Sevigny. The film tells the story of Howard Marks, a notorious British drug smuggler; the screenplay was adapted by director Rose from Marks' autobiography of the same name.

The film follows the Welsh stoner Oxford graduate on his worldwide odyssey in pursuit of "beneficial herbs". He became a master of the ridiculous disguise, got involved with the CIA, MI6, the IRA, the Mafia, and the Mexican secret service, and spent seven years (of a 25 year sentence) in jail in the States.

Chloe Sevigny, Elsa Pataky, Andrew Tiernan, Omid Djalili and, apparently, Ken Russell are also on-hand, and the director is Bernard Rose (Kreutzer Sonata, Candyman, Paperhouse).

Guillermo del Toro Has Left The Hobbit

Guillermo del Toro Has Left The Hobbit

I've got some pretty terrible news for all of you. I hate to be the barer of bad news, but Guillermo del Toro is no longer going to direct The Hobbit. Last week Del Toro gave an update on what was currently going on with The Hobbit, and I knew if something didn't actually start happening quick the production would start falling apart, and now Del Toro has dropped out of the project.

This is all due to MGM's financial problems. They can't seem to get it together, and Del Toro just couldn't wait around anymore. After all... he's got a ton of other film projects that he wants to start working on. Del Toro announced the news himself through the Lord of the Rings fan site The One Ring.

So, Del Toro will not direct The Hobbit, but he will continue to collaborate with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens on the films scripts, until they are completely done.

Who will step in to take del Toro's place as director? Who knows, but at this point the only person I would trust is Peter Jackson, will he do it though?

Here is What Guillermo Del Toro had to say:

In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming “The Hobbit,” I am faced with the hardest decision of my life. After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures. I remain grateful to Peter, Fran and Philippa Boyens, New Line and Warner Brothers and to all my crew in New Zealand. I’ve been privileged to work in one of the greatest countries on earth with some of the best people ever in our craft and my life will be forever changed. The blessings have been plenty, but the mounting pressures of conflicting schedules have overwhelmed the time slot originally allocated for the project. Both as a co-writer and as a director, I wish the production nothing but the very best of luck and I will be first in line to see the finished product. I remain an ally to it and its makers, present and future, and fully support a smooth transition to a new director.

This is really quite sad! I hate to see this talented guy leave the production! Here is what Peter Jackson said about his departure.

We feel very sad to see Guillermo leave the Hobbit, but he has kept us fully in the loop and we understand how the protracted development time on these two films, due to reasons beyond anyone’s control – has compromised his commitment to other long term projects…The bottom line is that Guillermo just didn’t feel he could commit six years to living in New Zealand, exclusively making these films, when his original commitment was for three years. Guillermo is one of the most remarkable creative spirits I’ve ever encountered and it has been a complete joy working with him. Guillermo’s strong vision is engrained [sic] into the scripts and designs of these two films, which are extremely fortunate to be blessed with his creative DNA.

Guillermo is co-writing the Hobbit screenplays with Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh and myself, and happily our writing partnership will continue for several more months, until the scripts are fine tuned and polished…New Line and Warner Bros will sit down with us this week, to ensure a smooth and uneventful transition, as we secure a new director for the Hobbit. We do not anticipate any delay or disruption to ongoing pre-production work.

Scott Pilgrim VS. The World Official Trailer

Scott Pilgrim VS. The World Official Trailer

It just seems like a full blown, non-stop, constant video game fighting with not a single boring minute.

After reaching 100,000 fans on the Facebook page, the trailer for Scott Pilgrim VS. The World was released today, on memorial day weekend, of all days, I think it’s a pretty smart move. When movie info is at its slowest.

Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams…literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (”Hot Fuzz,” “Shaun of the Dead”) tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker’s quest to power up with love in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.”

Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass–and now is back in town–to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor.

As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past–from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.

Sex And The City 2 Review By: Windy

Sex And The City 2
Review By: Windy

Windy reviews “Sex And The City 2". Take a swing by her website and check out what she’s been up to lately.

Sex and the City 2 (SATC), directed my Michael Patrick King and starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, opens with aerial views of New York City skyscrapers and “Empire State of Mind” by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z playing in the background.

The opening scene features Carrie Bradshaw/Preston leaving her apartment in a casual white dress, reflective gold oversized sunglasses and a pair of gold sequin stilettos to match. Per the usual SATC style, Carrie narrates most of the story, starting with how she met Charlotte (Davis), Miranda (Nixon) and Samantha (Cattrall) in the 80’s and 90’s. Each character is shown in a brief flashback to illustrate how they looked back then.

Carrie had two looks – the first with Converse (which have made a comeback) and a spiral perm, and the second as a Madonna doppelganger. Charlotte looked the exact same – like a brunette Martha Stewart with a sweater tied around her shoulders. Miranda was a typical late 80’s/early 90’s business woman in a suit with oversized shoulder pads, nylons, and gym shoes walking briskly down the street. Samantha was a foul-mouthed punk rocker.

Everything about this film is over the top. It starts out with a same-sex marriage with a Broadway choir singing as people enter and is officiated by Liza Minelli. For the reception, Minelli dons a sparkling shirt and sings Beyonce’s “All the Single Ladies”. Kudos to Minelli, though. She has some legs and some moves.

Because of Samantha’s public relations connections, she is invited on a trip to Abu Dhabi. Of course she can’t go without the girls, so the adventures begin while Carrie and John (“Big”) are reaching a troubled spot in their marriage, Samantha is hitting and fighting menopause, Miranda has quit her job and Charlotte is struggling with exhaustion and worries of infidelity.

The one bright spot in these troubles is that without a job, Miranda seems to come to life with vibrancy. Nixon is given the chance for her character to be the glue in the group, trying to bring happiness to everyone. Usually she’s the downer, struggling with work and family. This is a welcome change.

The film is filled with clichés, from ultra-conservative Middle Easterners and hard-bodied World Cup players to flea market (souk) scoundrels trying to sell knock-off Rolexes and Birkin bags.

Additionally, unlike the first film, which followed a central plot, this film has several different plots playing out at once, making it hard to concentrate on one of them at any given time. The girls get into a lot of high jinx throughout the film, which comes across as a desperate attempt to get a laugh. These implausible scenes take away from the core of the movie – the relationship between the women and with their men.

Ultimately, there is too much of everything in this film (as the billboard would say – they got “Carried” away) making the audience unsympathetic to the characters.

Sex and the City is a great series. However, the film needs to stay just there – in the city – to keep the audience in love with the characters.

I'll Be Back-New Terminator Film Moving Forward

I'll Be Back-New Terminator Film Moving Forward

A new movie in the Terminator series, which last came to the screen in 2009's Terminator Salvation, may be one step closer to happening. According to Variety, the current owners of the rights to the franchise, a hedge fund called Pacificor LLC, announced today that it has hired the Hollywood talent agency William Morris Endeavor (WME) to help sell the rights to a studio or production company.

That's a smart move, since Pacificor has no prior experience making movies. The fund picked up the Terminator rights for $29.5 million in an auction last February after the previous owners, a company called Halcyon, went bankrupt. Pacificor had some post-auction talks with Sony and Lionsgate, who were also bidding for the rights, but nothing came of that.

The now-defunct Halcyon itself bought the rights in 2007 for $30 million from original producer Mario Kassar, with financial help from Pacificor. The package include the rights to all future movies, TV series, DVDs and merchandise. Not a bad deal for a franchise that has made $1.4 billion worldwide.

So far there have been four Terminator feature films and the short-lived TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Terminator Salvation, which starred Christian Bale and Sam Worthington, was not liked very much by critics or fans, with the movie taking in only $125 million in the U.S. while costing $200 million to make (it made about $246 million overseas).

The movie was supposed to launch a new trilogy, and supposedly there is a script for a fifth film floating around and even an outline for a sixth. Salvation director McG has expressed interest in coming back, although that's probably not in the cards at this point. However, the original series star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, will step down as governor of California at the end of this year.

Are you thinking what we're thinking?

Thomas Dekker To Put On Dancing Shoes In Footloose?

Thomas Dekker To Put On Dancing Shoes In Footloose?

With a short, but troubled history, it has seemed like the film has been cursed by the Movie Gods, angered at yet another remake sauntering across the cinematic dance floor. But Paramount is intent on getting its new version of Footloose in production, with former John Connor actor Thomas Dekker as the studio’s next likely candidate.

The remake's development has been a carousel of changing directors and talent. Originally planned as a reunion for the High School Musical star/filmmaker team Zac Efron and Kenny Ortega, it was scuppered last year when Efron decided he wanted to stop working on so many musical projects and Ortega left claiming he was tired after making This Is It. Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford stepped in, but he also left when scheduling couldn’t be worked out.

Currently, Hustle & Flow’s Craig Brewer is the man in charge, having tinkered with the script and gotten the movie in a position to shoot. Dekker isn’t signed yet, but he’s definitely at the top of the wish list given his growing fan base. He’s not from the HSM crowd, but he has appeared in the likes of Heroes and The Sarah Connor Chronicles on TV.

Film-wise, he most recently appeared in the Nightmare On Elm Street remake, and he’s got Gregg Araki’s Kaboom scheduled to hit next.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Are In The Hands Of Michael Bay

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Are In The Hands Of Michael Bay

Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon have brought Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form on to produce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the live-action film that reboots the film series launched by New Line in 1990. Bay, Fuller and Form will produce with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick.

The producers will begin meetings with writers in the next few weeks. The deal puts Bay in the center of two Paramount franchises, as he started production May 17 on Transformers 3, and is zeroing in on Rosie Huntington-Whitely to replace Megan Fox as love interest for Shia LaBeouf. TMNT, a co-production between Paramount and Nickelodeon, is an outgrowth of the $60 million acquisition made by Nick last October for global rights to the entire Turtles franchise. Right around the same time, Paramount made a first look deal with the Platinum Dunes partners, who will generate genre projects but also want to expand their scope. While they've already set up several projects including a Rob Cohen-remake of Fright Night, the Turtles film puts them into new territory.

Dennis Hopper Passes Away

Dennis Hopper Passes Away

Hollywood actor Dennis Hopper, best known for directing and starring in the 1969 cult classic "Easy Rider," died on Saturday from complications of prostate cancer, a friend of the actor said. Hopper was 74.

The hard-living screen star died at his home in the coastal Los Angeles suburb of Venice at 8:15 a.m. PDT (1515 GMT), surrounded by family and friends, the friend, Alex Hitz, told Reuters.

In a wildly varied career spanning more than 50 years, Hopper appeared alongside his mentor James Dean in "Rebel Without a Cause" and "Giant" in the 1950s and played maniacs in such films as "Apocalypse Now," "Blue Velvet" and "Speed."

He received two Oscar nominations -- for writing "Easy Rider" (with co-star Peter Fonda and Terry Southern), and for a rare heartwarming turn as an alcoholic high-school basketball coach in the 1986 drama "Hoosiers."

But his prodigious drug abuse, temper tantrums, propensity for domestic violence and poor choice of movie roles often made him a Hollywood pariah.
