Ra's Al Ghul Has Been Cast For The Dark Knight Rises

Josh Pence, who played opposite Armie Hammer as Tyler Winklevoss in The Social Network (where Hammer's face was superimposed on his), has been cast as a young Ra's Al Ghul in Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan's new Batman movie.

The movie's casting has been ultra-secret, although Christian Bale, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman are returning to lead a caped crusading cast, which includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard.

The story line has also been kept locked up in the Batcave but Pence's casting throws more than a few crumbs to follow. Ra's Al Ghul was played by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins, thus paving the way for a possible return of the supposedly dead character. Also, while the studio never confirmed Cotillard's character, it has been rumored to be that of Thalia Al Ghul, the daughter of Batman's mentor-turned-enemy.
Sources say Pence will appear in scenes that take place 30 years prior to the present story.

Pence, recently wrapped Battleship, Universal's big-budget action movie based on the board game, and indie political thriller The Algerian.

Liam Neeson Cut From The Hangover Part II

Liam Neeson won’t be appearing in the upcoming The Hangover Part II when the film is released in theaters May 26.

The actor had filmed scenes as a tattoo artist for the Bangkok-set sequel, but his cameo was edited out when director Todd Phillips was forced to do reshoots and Neeson was not available, according to published reports.
In the film, the tattoo artist is one of the characters the guys have to track down during their adventures. The character is described as “crazy” and “intense,” and “someone you’re afraid to talk to.”

The Notebook director Nick Cassavetes stepped in to fill Neeson’s shoes.

The role was originally meant for Mel Gibson, but after several people in the project objected, the role was recast.

Ben Affleck Could Star In "The Great Gatsby"

Ben Affleck is in talks to play the role of Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, the Baz Luhrmann-directed 3D adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald literary classic at Warner Bros. Now, Affleck will have to work to fit this in. After starring in and directing The Town, he’s prepping to direct Argo, a film about the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. But signs point toward him making time in his schedule to join Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan in Gatsby. Both projects are at Warner Bros.

DiCaprio plays Jay Gatsby (Robert Redford starred in the original) and Maguire plays Nick Carraway (Sam Waterston in the 1974 pic). Luhrmann, who wrote the script with Craig Pearce, is still in the process of setting the roles of Jordan Baker (originated by Lois Chiles), the gas station owner George Wilson (Scott Wilson) and his wife Myrtle (played by Karen Black in the original). Tom is having an affair with Myrtle, and they all play a role in a tragedy.

Luhrmann, Catherine Martin and Catherine Knapman of Luhrmann/Bazmark Films will produce with Red Wagon partners Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher. G Mac Brown will also produce. WME reps Affleck.

Hailee Steinfeld Cast As Juliet

Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar-nominated for the Coen Bros’ True Grit, is in negotiations to star as Juliet in a new Romeo and Juliet movie.

Carlo Carlie, an Italian director perhaps best known for the 1992 festival foreign film Flight of the Innocent, is behind the camera for the adaptation of the William Shakespeare classic, which has a some big names behind it.

Julian Fellowes, whose screenwriting credits range from Gosford Park to The Tourist, wrote the script and is producing along with Garbiele Muccino, the director of the Will Smith drama Seven Pounds, as well as former New Line execs-turned-producers Ileen Maisel and Mark Ordesky.

In case you skipped English class, here’s the skinny on Romeo and Juliet: Romeo is the son of the Montague family and is an able swordsman. Juliet is the daughter of the Capulet household, almost 14 years old. The two young teens fall in love but their respective families are violently feuding and try to keep them apart, leading to their tragic deaths.

The movie, said to be budgeted in the $15 million range, will shoot in Italy later this spring.

Romeo and Juliet will be Steinfeld’s first movie since the actress, 14, received acclaim for her work in Grit. Her portrayal of Mattie Rose opened many doors, including putting in her in the final round for lead role in Hunger Games (the part ultimately went to fellow Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence).

The actress, became attached to Forgotten, an adaptation of a YA novel that in February was set up at Paramount with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of Fake Empire producing. She is also attached to a Sleeping Beauty script that is currently out to buyers

Arnold Schwarzenegger Next Film Could Be "The Last Stand"

UPDATE, NOW WITH MORE HEAT: Sources tell Heat Vision that Schwarzenegger and Lionsgate are far along in the dealmaking process and a tentative late August start date is being eyed. Dealmaking could still fall apart over money, but if made, Lionsgate would get bragging rights to having the first post-office Arnie movie, a movie that would likely be a safe bet for all involved as it would it old school Arnie: him versus a bunch of bad guys.

Arnold Schwarzenegger might have found his big-screen return project. Sources say that the actor-turned-governor-turned-returning actor is circling The Last Stand, a Lionsgate action project being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Jee-Woon Kim, the director behind Korean film The Good, The Bad, The Weird, is helming the crime thriller, which is set in motion when a cartel leader breaks out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexican border. The only thing standing in his way is a bordertown sheriff and his inexperienced staff.

Andrew Knauer wrote the spec script, which was worked on by Jeffrey Nachmanoff.

Sources say Schwarzenegger is in early negotiations for the part of the sheriff, although his agency, could not confirm the dealmaking and Lionsgate had no comment. The news of Arnold’s involvement first surfaced in Poland and was followed by the U.S. film fan sites Movieweb and /Film.

Schwarzenegger has been courted for over a dozen projects since he finished his term as California governor. World War II action project With Wings Eagles and sequels and remakes to Predator and Marathon Man are some of the titles that have surfaced.

Schwarzenegger last appeared on screen in a brief cameo in 2010’s hit action film The Expendables. His last starring gig was 2003’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and he also appeared in the 2004 Jackie Chan movie Around the World in 80 Days.

Don't Blink Or You'll Miss Hawkeye In This THOR Clip

If you blink you'll miss seeing Hawkeye in this Exclusive Via IGN.

IGN spoke exclusively with Hemsworth this week about Thor and reprising the role in next summer's The Avengers, which he said starts filming this month in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

As Thor edges closer to release and the promotional machine really ramps up, has it hit you just what the hell you've gotten yourself into?

Yes and no, I guess. It's still sort of surreal to see the billboards come up and you start to see the trailers playing and you say, 'Wow, it's actually happening.' But a year and a half ago when I first got cast, I was certainly informed of how big it was gonna be so I've had that time to think about it, but yeah you still double-take at billboards and go, 'What the hell is that?!'

Watch the clip after the Jump...

What's been your favorite part of making Thor?

The whole thing was just incredible, you know? I not only get to work with some of my favorite actors and people in the business, but I get to play a superhero. As a young kid or as an adult it's still a highlight.

Have you seen the film? I was curious how much of the Asgard stuff and the Shakespearean family dynamic that director Kenneth Branagh has talked up is left in it.

I saw an early cut, but look everything that we started out trying to achieve in the script that was written most of it is in there. Anything that's not is just brief sort of moments that you would remove to move the story along quicker or what have you. Now the general outline is still the same and I was hugely impressed. In an early unfinished cut, I was still able to be swept away as an audience member and enjoy the film. It's not only incredibly impressive in the Asgardian world – the universe they've created and the costumes – but also the earthbound stuff. There's a human, relatable story there and a real sense of humor to it, too.

When do you start working on The Avengers?

Everybody in the cast? The film starts shooting in a couple of weeks, and then I come on after the Thor press tour, which is around sort of the beginning of May. That's when I enter the scene.

What's your physical training for the film like? Any new regimens that are different from what you did for Thor?

Yeah, it's a new team of stunt guys and we're taking it to the next level and probably getting a little more technical with the technique of using the hammer, and incorporating some sort of broadsword techniques. Also, I'm back in the gym again and eating all the protein I can get my hands on. I have a nutritionist this time around who's given me some great advice, so I'm back into the swing of it.

Read the rest of the story over at IGN.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, in THOR, Chris Hemsworth portrays the title character with Tom Hiddleston in the role of Thor’s brother Loki, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. Additionally, the studio has cast Academy Award® winning actor Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Renee Russo as Frigga, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, Josh Dallas as Fandral, Jaimie Alexander as Sif, Idris Elba as Heimdall, as well as Colm Feore, Kat Dennings and award-winning actor Stellan Skarsgård. The film is slated for release in theatres domestically on May 6, 2011 via Paramount Pictures which will also release the film on a worldwide basis.

The epic adventure THOR spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

The screenplay for THOR was penned by Mark Protosevich as well as Ashley Miller & Zack Stentz, and Don Payne. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige will produce the film. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, and Marvel Studio’s Co-President, Louis D’Esposito, will executive produce.

Will Sofia Vergara Join The Cast Of Three Stooges?

Modern Family star Sofia Vergara is in discussions to join the growing cast of Three Stooges.

Sean Hayes and Will Sasso have so far been cast in the comedy being directed by the Farrelly brothers. Still up for grabs is the part of Moe.

The movie is not a biopic but will be divided into roughly half-hour vignettes.

Vergara doesn't have the offer just yet, although one is expected to be issued shortly. She is expected to play a devious woman who pretends to be the wife of a dying man and tells the Stooges she'll pay them a handsome sum if they kill the man in his sleep. The story line makes up the second vignette.

Andy Serkis Is Second Unit Director For The Hobbit

Andy Serkis, who played the iconic Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, is taking on a new role in The Hobbit 1 and 2. In addition to reprising his role as the tragic creature, Serkis also has been tapped by Jackson to serve as second unit director on the two films, which are now in production in New Zealand.

“I think I understand Peter’s sensibility and we have a common history of understanding Middle Earth,” Serkis told The Hollywood Reporter. “A lot of the crew from The Lord of the Rings was returning to work on The Hobbit. There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic."

Serkis has already done some directing, including performance capture on a couple video games including Heavenly Sword. But, he said, “When Peter asked me. There was this email out of the blue. It was a fantastic surprise.”

When he completes The Hobbit movies, Serkis aims to direct his first live-action feature. In addition, he and producer Jonathan Cavendish (Bridget Jones’ Diary) plan to launch a perform capture studio and training center, dubbed The Imaginarium, which will produce its own material as well as service other projects.

As for his return to Middle Earth, details are being kept under wraps, but Serkis told THR that his directing responsibilities would go beyond performance capture. “It is wide ranging and encompasses a lot of directing aspects of filmmaking and story. Yes, there is some performance capture, but I will be very much on the live action sets and locations helping Peter to tell the story."

“The learning curve is The Hobbit is being shot in 3D,” he added, noting that the 3D would be used “dramatically, to give a point of view.”

“In the same way Lord of the Rings was an interpretation of the book, The Hobbit is being treated the same way,” Serkis said. “It will be faithfully represented with a fresh interpretation.”

The busy actor just completed shooting his performance in the film. “He is very much a Gollum that people will recognize,” Serkis offered, noting that the character would be seen in his “truest form.”

The actor also has performances in two additional anticipated movies are on the way, both of which are performance capture. He will play Caesar in the Planet of the Apes prequel Rise of the Apes, slated for an Aug. 4 debut; and Captain Haddock in the December release The Adventures of TinTin: The Secret of the Unicorn.

“When we created Gollum the first time, performance capture was it its infancy,” he said, noting that today, “within the industry, there is more appreciation for it as an acting art form. It’s all about character, learning what the character thinks, feels, how he carries pain.”

Serkis said it’s “thrilling” to reprise the role of Gollum. “I was looking forward to doing it. He never really left me.”

Bethany (Robb) was born to surf. A natural talent who took to the waves at a young age, she was leading an idyllic, sun-drenched, surfer girl’s life on the Kauai Coast, competing in national competitions with her best friend Alana (Lorraine Nicholson), when everything changed in a heartbeat. On Halloween morning, Bethany was on a typical ocean outing when a 14-foot tiger shark came out of nowhere and seemed to shatter all her dreams.

SOUL SURFER reveals the moving aftermath of this headline-making story, as Bethany fights to recover and grapples with the future. Strengthened by the love of her parents, Tom (Quaid) and Cheri (Hunt), she refuses to give in or give up, and begins a bold return to the water. And if she can’t be a surfer, then who is she?

Zack Snyder Talks About Chris Nolan & Superman: Man Of Steel

Faster than a speeding bullet or merely Batcycle-quick? That was the question we put to Superman: Man Of Steel's director Zack Snyder when Empire collared him at Sucker Punch's recent London junket. Credit to him, he resisted the urge to kick-off a superhero turf war, giving a diplomatic answer that involved kryptonite arrows and a slightly baffled look.

The diplomacy was unsurprising considering the Dark Knight's current custodian, Christopher Nolan, is working closely with Snyder and writer David Goyer to bring Supes back to the big screen.

"Chris has been amazingly generous with me," Snyder told us of his producer's contributions to Superman: Man Of Steel's storyline. "He's making [The Dark Knight Rises] but he takes time if we're knocking around ideas for the script. We'll all sit around in a room, beat it around and try to figure it out..."

So there you have it: Nolan has officially developed an Inception-like power over time to give his attention to not one, but two ginormous Hollywood tentpoles all at the same time. Says Snyder: "Honestly, he wants us to make the best movie we can and he's just interested in helping with that witout messing up the process. I think it's amazingly generous of him."

Shooting on Superman is scheduled to kick off in Vancouver this summer with Henry Cavill doning the cape and Amy Adams, Diane Lane and Kevin Costner also on board.

Sylvester Stallone Wants Walter Hill For "Headshot"

Sylvester Stallone has met with Walter Hill about directing Headshot, a job that became available after Wayne Kramer exited the film this week. Word was that Kramer exited because he didn't see eye to eye creatively with Stallone, who'll star. Said Stallone: "Initially, Mr. Kramer was hired to direct a dark comedy; however his vision was much darker and exceptionally more violent than how the project was originally conceived. It was decided that it would be better for everyone to move on and consequently Mr. Kramer was dismissed by producers earlier this week. There were no volatile clashes, it was simply a professional parting of the ways."

As for the prospect of working with the 48 Hours and Warriors director Hill, Stallone said he has had serious meetings with the helmer: "I completely respect Walter's incredible body of work and hopefully this legendary director will become attached to the project." The film is slated to go into production before summer.

Dish Network To Acquire Blockbuster

Satellite TV operator Dish Network's proposed $320 million acquisition of video rental company Blockbuster, if approved, will allow the company to expand its on-demand and online content offerings or even launch a Netflix competitor, according to analysts.

While some highlighted the small purchase price and potential benefits, at least one analyst, Sanford C. Bernstein's Craig Moffett, called the deal "strategically puzzling" and questioned whether Blockbuster may become a financial burden for Dish. "The deal still presents meaningful risk in that Blockbuster's business is a rapidly melting ice cube, and it is entirely possible that it becomes a drain on
cash flow going forward," he said.

A bankruptcy judge must still formally approve the deal on Thursday, but Wall Street analysts started discussing this and potential other fallout on Wednesday.

The stocks of acquirors often take hits as investors worry about execution risks and high price tags. However, in early Wednesday trading, Dish shares were slightly higher in a possible sign that investors felt no major such concerns would come into play in this case. But the stock reaction also signaled a lack of conviction that the deal would be a major game changer for Dish.

"We find the idea of gaining access to the Blockbuster titles and streaming rights intriguing" for Dish, Collins Stewart analyst Thomas Eagan said in a report.

He cited at least two possible Dish strategies for the Blockbuster content. One is "using the DVDs and rights to make Dish more competitive (versus, say, DirecTV) by offering free DVD and streaming with a new Dish subscription," Eagan said. The other is "creating another Netflix-type provider."

However, Eagan cautioned that there would be limitations to those strategies.

"The studio deals with Blockbuster are likely to be short-termed and may not be renewed," he said. "The streaming rights are likely shallow in terms of number of titles; and Dish may lack the fulfillment infrastructure needed to distribute the titles."

In announcing it had won an auction for Blockbuster, Dish early on Wednesday cited cross-marketing and service extension opportunities.

Among cross-marketing opportunities, observers also mentioned the possibility to sell Dish subscriptions in video rental stores.

"The most valuable 'extension opportunity' for Dish lies within Blockbuster's digital business, which rents movies to customers on an a la carte basis through the Internet similar to Netflix, and content rights, which Dish could use to start a robust on-demand library," said Wells Fargo analyst Marci Ryvicker. "We view the acquisition as a positive that provides Dish with an Internet content platform and delivery method, a content library and greater optionality at a manageable cost."

She said the deal is another hint that Dish CEO Charlie Ergen "is setting DISH up to provide (some) content via server/Internet versus satellite." Ryvicker last week suggested Dish could look to compete with Netflix.
Analysts also discussed the financial impact of the Blockbuster deal.

"We do not view the acquisition as being significant to Dish's finances," said Ryvicker.

Eagan warned though that there will likely be earnings dilution. "But given Dish's [recent] difficulty at adding subscribers, this could provide a strategic lift," he concluded.
