Has Fifty Shades Of Grey Found A Director

After a lengthy search, Universal and Focus Features seem to be closer to starting production on their much-anticipated adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Several sources tell Variety that while no deal is in place, Joe Wright is the choice to helm the feature adaptation of the steamy E.L. James novel.

Though some reports say Wright has not won the job, one insider very close to the production says he is the man.

Universal had no comment.

U, Focus and producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti had been looking for some time for a director who could bring prestige to a book described by many as “mommy porn.” It’s a tricky project since following the book closely would inevitably result in an commercially undesirable NC-17 rating, while going easy on the sensuous elements of the story could disappoint fans of the runaway bestseller that started as an e-book derived from “Twilight” fan fiction.

The other directors considered for the job included “Monster” helmer Patty Jenkins, Bill Condon, Bennett Miller and Gus Van Sant. Sources said Steven Soderbergh was also considered for the gig before eventually deciding on Wright.

Though Kelly Marcel is still working on the script and Wright’s deal has to be negotiated, nailing down a director would allow them to focus next on the important job of casting the parts of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.

Wright most recently helmed “Anna Karenina,” which was also distributed by Focus. Given his relationship with the studio on films like “Atonement” and “Pride and Prejudice” and his experience directing thesps such as Keira Knightley and Saoirise Ronan, the hire seems to be a logical choice.

Pelé Movie On It's Way

If Goal didn't do it for you and you're still wrapping your head around the intricacies of Bend It Like Beckham, news of a Pelé movie will be like balm to your troubled, football-loving soul.

Edison Arantes do Nascimento, the Brazilian superstar and arguably the greatest player to ever kick a goal, is getting the full biopic treatment in a movie that tracks his life from a poor upbringing in São Paulo to fame and glory as a 17 year-old superstar at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.

No doubt there'll also be plenty on his years in a Allied POW camp and his heroic performance against a Wehrmacht XI in Paris. Wait, that's Escape To Victory. Scratch that.

The so-far untitled Pelé movie has a heavyweight production team, with Brian Grazer, veteran of truth-life stories like Rush, Frost/Nixon and J. Edgar, and Ivan Orlic, Kim Roth and Dany Wolf overseeing things. If you're in Cannes and have some spare cash, Exclusive Media International will be touting the project out to potential distributors.

Shooting is scheduled to commence this August with The Two Escobars' team Michael and Jeff Zimbalist writing and directing.

Who is The Nomadic Family?

Insanely unorthodox, embarrassingly honest, and on a path to spiritual awakening, this family of 5 is on their third year of non-stop budget world travel. They lived with an indigenous tribe in the jungles of Ecuador, taught spirituality classes in hostels in Cambodia for 7 months, and are now training for their Fall 2013 Annapurna Circuit trek in Nepal where a film crew will accompany them for a documentary about how The Nomadic Family is redefining modern family life. Their critically acclaimed blog (thenomadicfamily.com) explains the untold sides of family travel life, those moments that take your breath away, and the adventures and mishaps while globetrotting.

The Project:

We'll be following the Nomadic Family to Nepal as they trek the hills of Annapurna for three weeks, and then volunteer at an orphanage near Kathmandu (www.thekumariproject.org). In an ever changing universe, in the age of technology, watch as they live by their own rules, and make their dreams come true.

Please remember to spread the word! Thank you for your time!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

We're planning to trek in a country that we've never been to, with abnormally high elevations, and 3 pre-teenage kids. Nothing about this project is going to be easy. But, lucky for us, we didn't get to where we are today by fearing adversity. As seasoned travelers, we know to plan on our plans changing, and to expect the unexpected. Our job is to be flexible, roll with the punches, and never underestimate the goodness in people. I know enough to know that what we need will be provided. It happens every time. After all, the journey is the destination.

Follow the Nomadic Family as they trek Annapurna, volunteer with locals, and redefine the meaning of family, happiness, and success.

First Look At James McAvoy From X-Men: Days Of Future Past

When he’s not napping in his trailer or, you know, directing the movie, Bryan Singer has been the source of a regular flow of pictures from behind the scenes of X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Today’s brings a retro-tastic look at James McAvoy’s Charles Xavier.

Serpico indeed! From the looks of this, Xavier will be hanging on to his locks for a while yet, and, given that the portion of the film featuring the First Class cast will be set in the 1970s, he’s gone for it, including a mane that would even impress Hugh Jackman’s Logan.

Days Of Future Past finds the X-team in real trouble in a dark alternate future where mutants are hunted down, put in internment camps or killed by the robotic sentinels. To stop this happening will require the efforts not only of the present-day team (including Jackman, Shawn Ashmore, Ellen Page, Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Anna Paquin and Daniel Cudmore), but also the younger versions of some of them in the '70s (with McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult all returning).

It’s all being shot in 3D right now in Canada ready for a July 17, 2014 release date.

MAN OF STEEL UK TV Spot. New Footage

WB has delivered another great TV spot for MAN OF STEEL with new footage. Keeps looking better and better.

The story remains mostly the same (albeit tweaked by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer): Kal-El is sent to Earth and adopted by wholesome, humane farm folk Jonathan (Kevin Costner) and Martha (Diane Lane) Kent. There, he assumes the identity of Clark Kent and struggles to blend in with humanity while dealing with the fact that he’s a god amongst ants.

Then General Zod (Michael Shannon) shows up, demanding that Kal-El pledge allegiance to him lest he start destroying this planet that his fellow Kryptonian has come to love and cherish. And that’s without investigative journalist Lois Lane.

Jurassic Park 4 Delayed

Guests will have to wait a little longer to re-enter “Jurassic Park.”

Universal Pictures has decided to take the film off its June 13, 2014, release date for the long-awaited sequel to “Jurassic Park 4.”

In a statement from Universal, the studio says, “Universal has decided to release ‘Jurassic Park 4 ‘at a later date giving the studio and filmmakers adequate time to bring audiences the best possible version of the fourth installment in Universal’s beloved franchise. We could not be more excited about the vision that Colin Trevorrow has created for this film, and we look forward to watching as he and the producers create another great chapter in this franchise’s storied history.”

Rumblings began to surface last night of a possible delay to the production when several crew members tweeted that the production was being halted.

The project was already on a tight schedule when the studio dated the film before it tapped a director to come on board. “Safety Not Guaranteed” helmer Colin Trevorrow was eventually selected but as part of his deal had asked the studio if he could re-work the script with writing partner Derek Connolly.

Even with a script being worked out, the studio had begun meeting with actors and had focused on thesps such as Bryce Dallas Howard and David Oyelowo as front-runners to join the cast. The idea was once a script was done and greenlight given that offers could be given out immediately and production get under way without any worry of getting off schedule due to casting meetings.

While delays are never a good thing, this is hardly a troubling sign for the production but more of the fact that Universal may have simply gotten too far ahead of itself when setting the original date.

Trevorrow is rewriting the script with Connelly, whom he worked with on Sundance hit “Safety Not Guaranteed.”

MOUNTAIN MEN Returns On June 9th

Beyond the edges of civilization, man is not at the top of the food chain. And, nature gives no second chances to those fighting to survive as… MOUNTAIN MEN

New Season Premieres Sunday, June 9 at 9pm ET

New York, May 9, 2013– In isolated Yaak Valley in northwest Montana, Tom Oar and his wife Nancy are racing against time to gather enough wood and food to see them through the winter. Hunting season ends in just a few short days. But hunting will have to wait; wildfires are speeding their way and their first priority is protecting their home. Living in a tinderbox cabin in the wilderness, their survival depends on fending off one life-threatening act of nature after the next—from raging firestorms and brutal, seven-month-long winters to marauding grizzly bears and deadly wolves.

For the fearless few who choose to forge a life of their own in the unforgiving wilds, every day brings a constant onslaught of new danger. Season 2 of MOUNTAIN MEN, premiering Sunday, June 9 at 9pm ET on HISTORY, follows the real-life challenges of living off the land, far from civilization, where it takes survival skills and sheer cunning just to stay fed, clothed…and alive.

Season 2 picks up where Tom and the others left off last season. In the frozen wilds of Alaska's Great Northern Range, bush pilot and fur trapper Marty Meierotto hopes to rebound from a disappointing trapping season, but a late-arriving winter threatens to derail him before he can even get started. In North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, Eustace Conway has taken a hefty cash loan to save his land from a government lien. He’ll do whatever it takes to repay the loan even as he struggles to keep trespassers and their chain saws at bay.

This season also introduces four new MOUNTAIN MEN. Rich Lewis makes his living in southwest Montana in pursuit of one of North America's deadliest predators, the mountain lion. Ranchers depend on him and his well-trained hounds to keep the cats away from their livestock and off their land, and he is hell-bent on running off one cat in particular—Three-Toes, the lion that killed his best dog. George Michaud, a trapper devoted to Native American hunting and trapping techniques, relies on his dogsled team to navigate the treacherous terrain of Idaho’s Grand Tetons. Rounding out the cast are Charlie Tucker, an axman-turned-mountain man who leaves the only job he's ever known to pursue his dream of trapping fur full-time in the forests of northern Maine; and Jason Hawk, a hunter and blacksmith who is committed to a thoroughly self-sufficient life and will stop at nothing to protect his family in the harsh Arizona desert.

MOUNTAIN MEN is produced for HISTORY by Warm Springs Productions. Russ McCarroll is Executive Producer for HISTORY. Executive Producers for Warm Springs are Marc Pierce and Chris Richardson.

The Great Gatsby Review. Will Audiences Flock To The Epic Great Gatsby?

The Great Gatsby Review
By: MattInRC

The year's first Oscar contender The Great Gatsby represents a must-see. The question is, will moviegoers take the chance?

Among the worst assumptions of Summer films is that their end results are merely a cacophony of thunderous explosions, Science Fiction slaughter, and Comic Book reboots. But once in awhile, we're jolted back to reality with truly excellent fare. That's where The Great Gatsby finds itself, a film that's top-shelf in its direction, true to the source material, and a wonder on the eyes.

Based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel from 1925, our story follows the parallel paths of the writer (Tobey Maguire, Spiderman series), the blonde beauty Daisy (Carey Mulligan, Drive), and the reclusive mega-millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio, Shutter Island, Inception), as 1920's America drinks and spends its way into The Great Depression. When Maguire's Nick Carraway moves into a small home on the nuveau-riche fictional island of West Egg, he instantly realizes that the home next door is host to a recurring weekend activity of drinking and partying, courtesy of the enigmatic Gatsby. The guests fly into wild conversations about his past, elevating him close to godhood, and leaving Carraway shell-shocked to learn that he's been invited to meet Gatsby himself. This meeting isn't accidental: Gatsby wants to re-ignite his romance with Carraway's second cousin Daisy, whom Gatsby left years ago due to his poverty. But Daisy's married to the former athlete Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton, Zero Dark Thirty), who he himself is engaged in a relationship with another woman. As New York literally grows up around them, our love triangle moves to a deadly third act, in which no one will be left untouched.

Director Baz Luhrmann (Moulon Rouge) spends like 1922 to bring this tale to life; and while the book has been remade nearly a half-dozen times, it's never looked or sounded so good. Luhrmann paints every scene like a da Vinci, filled with eye candy as far as your eye can see, including the terrific roadside image of the optometrist's glasses whose irises rise a mile high, looking over the creation of New York like its protector. Everything visually about this film screams perfection, and Luhrmann basks in it, tranporting the viewer to a time of decandence not seen since. But it's also his choices of actors which drive the plot when the parties are over and romance begins. DiCaprio is hand's down the best thing about Gatsby, because he actually seems to become Gatsby, from his 'old sport' monikers (which he throws down like a stack of Vegas chips) to the nervousness of a school boy upon seeing Daisy after so many years. Among the greatest - and least appreciated - actors of our time, DiCaprio brings a life to Gatsby that's inspiring, imaginative, funny, and gripping in its tragic ending. Mulligan shines as Daisy and Maguire is solid as the naive Nick, forming a triumverate that's simply fun to watch together.

There are some shortcomings to Luhrmann's casting - including Edgerton - who never seems to get comfortable speaking his lines. There's also the underused Isla Fisher (Confessions of a Shopaholic) and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) as a lowly working-class couple whose on-again/off-again appearances makes them less effective each time they re-appear to throw a wrench in the story. If this movie's got one issue, it might have been to see these two operate within the story more effectively. But this is a minor issue that one can ignore, because the story is so effectively centered around Gatsby, Daisy, and Carraway. My hope is that an extended edition on Blu-ray might allow this sidestory a chance to breathe. What also stands out about the story is Luhrmann's ballsy choice of music - 1920's ragtime is replaced with Executive Producer Jay-Z's tracks, along with appearances by Beyonce and André 3000. It could have been disastrous, but the music works effortlessly alongside In Time Composer Craig Armstrong's score.
Visually stunning and mostly well-constructed, The Great Gatsby demonstrates what can happen when all the mixtures are (nearly) properly balanced. And while some of its casting mix is suspect, DiCaprio demonstrates (once again) that he's deserving of more than mere Oscar nomination. Mulligan and Maguire establish themselves as quality dramatic leads, and Luhrman's eye basks the viewer in a visual symphony that deserves recognition of some sort. Whether audiences embrace Shakespearean tragedy in the high life of the 1920's is a question that only the numbers can bear out, but with so much of this that works, The Great Gatsby is definitely worth a travel back in time. It's rated PG-13 and has a runtime of 142 minutes.

Joe Johnston To Direct Gotti Film

Mobster biopic Gotti is getting a second life.

Veteran filmmaker Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) has come aboard to direct the film for Fiore Films' Marc Fiore and Radar Pictures' Ted Field, while Relativity Media has snapped up U.S. distribution rights. Gotti also will be heading to Cannes, where IM Global will shop the project to foreign buyers.

Gotti stars John Travolta as the famed Gambino crime family head John Gotti Sr., nicknamed the "Dapper Don." The movie has been a longtime passion project for Travolta.

"I'm looking forward to portraying John Gotti -- it's been a long time coming. And I think that Johnson is an exciting and fresh addition to the vision of the film. We are all looking forward to starting production," Travolta said in a statement.

Added Johnston: “I think we’ve always been fascinated with the idea of the romantic outlaw. John Gotti could be in one instance a charismatic, kind and loving family man, and in another, deadly to his enemies. The opportunity to tell the true story of Gotti with John Travolta is a director’s dream.”

Johnston is set to begin filming in New York on Sept. 9. The movie is based on a story by John A. Gotti -- Gotti's son -- with an original screenplay by Leo Rossi and revisions by Lem Dobbs.

Gotti has been in the works for several years, going through several incarnations. At one point, the project made headlines when Lindsay Lohan joined the cast, only to drop out.

Tom Cruise Signs On For Mission: Impossible 5

It looks like Ethan Hunt isn't ready to retire to a desk job just yet.

Tom Cruise will run, jump, shoot, crash through glass and maybe even scale another ridiculously tall building at least one more time as he's officially signed on to produce and star in "Mission: Impossible 5."

A writer and director for the project has yet to be announced, though all signs point to Christopher McQuarrie, who recently worked with Cruise on this past holiday season's most underappreciated offering, "Jack Reacher." In fact, McQuarrie tweeted that he was "deciding to accept" the "M:I-5" directing gig this past February, though there's since been no official follow-up.

Back in November, Deadline reported that Cruise and co-producer J.J. Abrams were interested in McQuarrie taking over the "M:I" franchise, which is a top priority for Paramount after the Brad Bird-directed "Ghost Protocol" earned a global box office take of $700 million. At the time, the studio was excited about how well "Jack Reacher" turned out, which ended up being a modest hit with critics and, while it underperformed domestically, went on to score a worldwide box office take of $216 million ... enough for Paramount to greenlight another Jack Reacher movie.

McQuarrie and Cruise have worked together on several projects recently, with the Oscar-winning screenwriter of "The Usual Suspects" penning "Valkyrie" and doing a few passes on Cruise's upcoming "All You Need Is Kill" and the now-defunct "Top Gun 2." He also wrote the screenplay for "Jack Reacher," adapted from Lee Child's novel "One Shot."

We may have grown indifferent to him stateside but Cruise is still a major star overseas: "Jack Reacher" earned a sequel thanks to foreign box office, and "Oblivion," which was in no way a good movie, managed to earn $220 million worldwide and counting. Cruise is also set for more international spy games -- and a potential new franchise -- as he'll be playing the lead role in the long in-development big screen adaptation of "The Man From U.N.C.L.E."

No release date for "Mission: Impossible 5" has been set, though sometime in 2015 seems likely. Heck, that year has already booked a new "Star Wars," a new "Avengers" and a new "Pirates of the Caribbean" -- why not also a new "Mission: Impossible"?
