CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE Movie Review By: Rama

By: Rama

We have teamed up with ramascreen.com and they will be helping with movie reviews for SandwichJohnFilms. This is Huge for my site having such a great team to work with and to build a great working relationship with them.

So make sure you follow them on Twitter and LIKE the site on Facebook.

Holy freakin’ A! I love this movie! I love every minute of it! My most anticipated rom-com of this summer did not disappoint me at all. CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE rocks! It’s every bit as good as I expected it to be. Steve Carell is an expert when it comes to playing a good guy who can’t catch a break. Love seems to give him a hard time, put him in a tough spot, his character in this movie reminds me of his character in Dan In Real Life which is also one of my favorite rom-coms of the last decade. Ryan Gosling brings sexy back, Emma Stone lights up the screen, Julianne Moore still has that tremendous on screen presence, and the hilarious tension/unrequited chemistry between the kid and the babysitter played by the luminous skater/model Analeigh Tipton is all too adorable to ignore..

At fortysomething, straight-laced Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) is living the dream–good job, nice house, great kids and marriage to his high school sweetheart. But when Cal learns that his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his “perfect” life quickly unravels. Worse, in today’s single world, Cal, who hasn’t dated in decades, stands out as the epitome of un-smooth. Now spending his free evenings sulking alone at a local bar, the hapless Cal is taken on as wingman and protege to handsome, thirtysomething player Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling). In an effort to help Cal get over his wife and start living his life, Jacob opens Cal’s eyes to the many options before him: flirty women, manly drinks and a sense of style that can’t be found at Supercuts or The Gap. Cal and Emily aren’t the only ones looking for love in what might be all the wrong places: Cal’s 13-year-old son, Robbie, is crazy about his 17-year-old babysitter, Jessica, who harbors a crush on Cal. And despite Cal’s makeover and his many new conquests, the one thing that can’t be made over is his heart, which seems to keep leading him back to where he began.

I’m a sucker for good rom-coms, sadly there aren’t many good rom-coms out there, which makes you miss the good old days of Pretty Woman and When Harry Met Sally but once in a while, a winner like CRAZY STUPID LOVE comes along and restores my faith. Dan Fogelman’s script follows the usual rules but packs a few punches that would get you coming back for more.
It’s love complicated that gets even more complicated when certain revelations eventually present themselves. It’s also a story that makes fun of the ritual and the hilarity of the dating and pick up game that most men would love to master.

Just as the title suggests, what Fogelman tries to explore is the craziness, the stupidity and whatever it is about love that just drives a person insane and makes them do things they wouldn’t normally do.

The comedy of CRAZY STUPID LOVE is irresistible. If Carell’s comments don’t get you, if Gosling’s sauna scene doesn’t get you, then the psycho Marisa Tomei would get you. Either way, you will laugh your ass off.

Gosling’s character thinks he’s got it all figured out, he thinks love is something that’s easily tackled with a few charms, that is until he encounters real love that comes with open communication. Gosling plays this role perfectly, to the point where he’s going to make male audiences jealous ’cause he’s got so much game, from clothing style to conversation skills.

Carell’s character thinks life is all well, his marriage is all well until his wife drops the divorce and unfaithfulness bomb. Convinced by Gosling’s character that he’s lost his manhood, he transforms himself into someone he’s not just so he could win his wife back when in fact all he and his wife need all along is just to remember why they fall in love in the first place.

The film at first makes Moore seem like the bad guy, but later on you’ll see that both Carell and Moore are at fault

Emma Stone is just absolutely radiant, I’ve met her in person and there’s something about that woman that just floors me, her expressions and her many reactions, you would not be able to keep her eyes off of her character. She represents this spontaneous energy trapped in a relationship that doesn’t care much about her until she sees it for herself and then finally breaks free but what I enjoy the most about her character is that she’s not easy, she can tame even the wildest smoothest player like Gosling.

The uncomfortably hilarious little story about the kid and the babysitter is just as integral as the rest of the interactions in this film. It contributes to the whole fighting for your soulmate theme.

I can’t say enough to praise CRAZY STUPID LOVE. Don’t be crazy or stupid, go watch this film.

Chuck Comic-Con Roundup. With Big Surprises To Come

It was an emotional panel for both Chuck creator Chris Fedak and his cast as it said goodbye to its Comic-Con fans – a group that gave them a standing ovation both at their very first panel in a small meeting room at the Con several years ago and now as they’ve been upgraded to the big room of the event, Ballroom 20.

“You guys really believed in us when we were screening a pilot no one ever heard of,” Zachary Levi, who plays the title character and teared up during a massive standing ovation for the show, remembers. “I look back at the moment and honestly it’s pretty amazing.”

Chuck’s final season moves to NBC Fridays starting on Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. The cast and crew gave us some hints as to what to expect in the season where everything changes as Morgan (Joshua Gomez) now becomes the Intersect. Fedak says he’s thankful that he knows it’s the last season and can write the series’ ending on his own terms.

Besides casting Mark Hamill as the season’s first villain, here are several things Fedak and the cast revealed about the upcoming season.

-- Chuck isn’t OK about not being the Intersect anymore, but it will force him to return to use his out-of-the-box thinking skills more.

-- Now that Chuck owns the Buy More and his own spy company, the big challenge will come in an opposing spy business and its owner may present a romantic connection for Adam Baldwin’s Casey.

-- Someone won’t survive Season 5 and it’s going to be a big loss!

-- While she’s not booked yet, Fedak can’t see the show's last season without Linda Hamilton returning as Chuck’s loving, tough, and secretive mom.

-- We will see Jeffster break up and the two will wage major war against each other. Say it ain’t so.

Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the Super-Solider Serum and bombarded by “vita-rays.” Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and as leader of the Avengers.

Snow White And The Huntsman Comic-Con Panel Roundup

The game of one-upmanship between Universal and Relativity over their competing Snow White movies ramped up at Comic-Con—and Universal now has the edge.

A day after Relativity released a first-look photo of Lilly Collins as Snow White in its untitled movie, Universal arrived in San Diego with a swath of character photos from Snow White and the Huntsman, including Kristen Stewart holding a sword and shield as Snow White, Charlize Theron looking menacing as the dagger-wielding Evil Queen, Chris Hemsworth as the hunky Huntsman and Sam Claflin as a prince.

And while its movie doesn’t start production until August, Universal still made a big impression with a well-received presentation of test footage and director Rupert Sanders’ commercials to get audience excited.

All this compared to Relativity’s Comic-Con no-show for its Snow White, which has been in production in Montreal since June.

The panel began with Sanders, a noted commercials director making his feature debut on Snow White, as well as producers Joe Roth and Palek Patel, talking about the origins of their project. Roth said that after the $1 billion success of Alice in Wonderland, “to be in the big picture business, you have to come up with a big idea that is known across several generations and several languages.”

The fact that there are two Snow White features racing to theaters (Relativity’s is scheduled for release in March, Universal’s in June) quickly came up, and though Roth was respectful toward the other project, he (and Universal) quickly made moves to set their project apart.

“Our movie is on the scale of The Lord of the Rings, in terms of size, scope and appetite,” he said, promising a “tough, rough, active male-female picture.”

“From the pictures,” he continued, referring to Relativity’s Snow White, “the other looks like a softer version.”

Roth tried to soften the gap between release dates—Huntsman comes out June 1, 2012 while Relativity’s movie opens March 16. “We are 10 weeks apart. In the movie business, that is a lifetime,” he said.

The presentation then featured three Sanders-directed commercials —for video games Call of Duty and Halo 3 as well as Monster.com—which conveyed to the crowd that 1) the man can direct action and war scenes, 2) he can create fantastical worlds with strange characters and mean, dark settings.

After the cast, consisting Stewart, Theron, Hemswoth and Claflin, came on stage, Roth, Sanders and company unveiled a proof-of-concept reel that was initially presented to the studio when the moviemakers were selling the project.

Sanders said it was shot in three days, describing it as “down and dirty” and “more of stylistic piece.”

The footage revealed a beautiful princess in a forest surrounded by fauna, but it quickly became dark and fantastical as a monologue asked what kind of a person you would be when tested by evil.

Sanders’ footage surprised and impressed with its shots of a fairy emerging out of the blackbird’s breast and Snow White surrounded by trees that are part men (in a way that was much more human than the trees seen in Lord of the Rings). Two knights were shown clashing swords, one getting cut in half and disintegrating into a million pieces.
