Identity Thief Review. The Film Is Well-Intentioned

Identity Thief  Movie Review
By: MattInRC

Is Identity Thief a rollicking comedic ride, or is this road trip comedy in need of a rest stop?

The new Jason Bateman/Melissa McCarthy comedy Identity Thief is something close to a sandwich that one loses a taste for soon after ordering it. Stacked high with well-intentioned comedic zaniness and surrounded by freshly-baked acting goodness, the film follows the straight-laced Colorado father Sandy (Jason Bateman, Arrested Development) as he loses - then gains back - his identity from Florida grifter Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids). McCarthy plays Diana, an overweight (big surprise) compulsive liar who's made a living by ruining the credit of others. She steals identities, then spends the victim into prison, all because her family abandoned her at an early age. Society dislikes fat people, and every rejection she endures fuels yet another effort to discredit the good names of hard-working, normal-looking people. As circumstance forces our duo to buddy up for a Mea Culpa drive back to Colorado, they must deal with a grizzly bounty hunter (Robert Patrick, Gangster Squad) and two hitmen hired to bring Diana back in a body bag.

Early on, the script by Writer Craig Mazin (Hangover II) looks compelling, as we witness evidence of a class war being waged between Sandy and his one-percent boss Harold Cornish (Jon Favreau, Swingers). But Hollywood consistently demonstrates its hatred for all things unique, and soon Identity Thief becomes more of a story about restoring order and taming McCarthy's wild behavior while wrapped around a standard road trip comedy. The biggest problem here is the increasingly uncomfortable attitude the film takes towards McCarthy's weight; it's clear that Hollywood is molding her into nothing less than a female John Candy for us to mock. How many fat-people movies will we have to endure before she too burns out as Candy did? Bateman suffers a different but no less unpopular pigeon-hole attachment, as he plays yet another straight man to an over-the-top comedian. He's consistently good in these roles, but I'd love to see him stretch his wings ala Pepper Brooks in Deodgeball (yes, that was him). Director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) allows both leads to ad-lib often, but the result turns our Act I genuine laughter into nervous reactions by Act II. We all know the bad girl will be tamed but not before each will teach the each other valuable lessons before the credits roll, and Gordon is content to ride this story anywhere it wants to go, including into BoringsVille.

Identify Thief is well-intentioned but ultimately fails as typical brainless Hollywood comedic fare. McCarthy and Bateman are their pigeon-holed comedic selves, relegated to operating in tightly-contained boxes as their characters go through the typical motions of loss and restoration. With a script whose path becomes apparent far too early, Identity Thief's fat jokes and ad-libbing soon become painful distractions, leading to an ending that we've seen far too many times. By then, we've been been throat-punched and cleaned out of any credit we've accumulated with these characters. Wait for this one as a rental: Identity Thief deserves no place in your theater-going plans.

Tom Hardy To Star In Locke

Tom Hardy is set to headline filmmaker Steven Knight's Locke, which IM Global's specialty label Anthem has come aboard to fully finance.

Locke, from Paul Webster, Joe Wright and Guy Heely's Shoebox Films, is sure to draw keen interest from foreign buyers at the European Film Market, where IM Global will launch the project. The market gets underway today in conjunction with the Berlin International Film Festival.

Based on an original screenplay from Knight, Locke tells the story of one man’s life unraveling in a tension-fuelled, 90-minute race against time (Knight will shoot in real time over 90 minutes). Ivan Locke has the perfect family, his dream job, and tomorrow should be the crowning moment of his career. But one phone call will force him to make a decision that will put it all on the line. Knight is set to begin production later this month in London, with Webster and Heeley producing.

IM Global, Shoebox and Knight previously collaborated on Hummingbird, to be released by Lionsgate later this year. "I'm really excited to be working with Tom Hardy on an innovative piece of filmmaking which will exercise his immense talent to the full. That IM Global is coming with us on this literal and metaphorical journey is testament to their creative ambition," Knight said.11 Said IM Global CEO Stuart Ford: "We enjoyed the ride with Steven, Paul and Guy so much that we're delighted to be in business with the same team on Locke. Adding a brilliant talent like Tom to the equation makes the prospect all the more exciting."

New Images From Tyler Perry's TEMPTATION

We got our hands on new images from Tyler Perry's upcoming film, TEMPTATION, will have you questioning the boundaries of all your relationships. TEMPTATION is a provocative love story that explores the intrigue and perils of infidelity. Lionsgate has just released FOUR new images featuring Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Judith), Lance Gross (Brice), Robbie Jones (Harley), Brandy Norwood (Melinda), and Kim Kardashian (Ava).

Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Judith) is shown with two DIFFERENT men! Who will she stay with in the end?

A bold exploration of the intrigue and perils of infidelity, Tyler Perry’s Temptation is a compelling love story that dives straight into the heart of obsessive passion. “It’s about a woman who starts to get restless in her relationship and her choice to be with another man has a huge effect on the rest of her life,” explains screenwriter/producer/director Tyler Perry. “She goes on a journey – in her career and in her marriage – and she ends up in a very different place than she expected.” In a departure from his previous dramas, this explosive film finds Perry exploring the nature of desire – and just how powerful and dangerous a taste of the forbidden can be. “This is definitely one of the most provocative movies – sexually and otherwise – that I’ve made,” says the director. “There are a lot of people who struggle in their relationships. They make bad choices about their marriages. They get divorced. And so many of them don’t step out of their situation and really think about the consequences of what they’re doing. This movie asks, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ It sends up a flag.”

LAIKA & Focus Features Deliver The Boxtrolls

Marking their third project together, LAIKA and Focus Features, the two companies behind the current Academy Award-nominated animated feature ParaNorman, announced today that LAIKA has begun production on The Boxtrolls. The new movie will be released nationwide by Focus on October 17th, 2014. Focus CEO James Schamus and LAIKA President & CEO Travis Knight made the announcement today.

As on the previous animation collaborations ParaNorman and Coraline, Focus will hold worldwide distribution rights to The Boxtrolls, and Universal Pictures International will release the movie overseas (with eOne Distribution handling Canada). Coraline (2009) earned Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice, and Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature Film; and was named one of the year’s 10 Best Films by the American Film Institute (AFI). In addition to its Academy Award nomination, ParaNorman (2012) is in the running for the BAFTA Awards’ animated feature prize. ParaNorman has won two Annie Awards (the animation community’s Oscars equivalent) and been cited as best animated feature film by 14 critics’ groups, more than any other 2012 animated feature.

The Boxtrolls is a 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid animated feature based on Alan Snow’s bestselling fantasy adventure novel Here Be Monsters. The Boxtrolls is being directed by Anthony Stacchi (co-director of the hit animated feature Open Season) and Graham Annable (story artist on Coraline and ParaNorman), and produced by David Ichioka and Mr. Knight. The voice cast includes Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley, Academy Award nominee Toni Collette, Elle Fanning (marking her fourth movie with Focus), Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Game of Thrones), Emmy Award nominee Jared Harris (Mad Men), Simon Pegg (Star Trek), Nick Frost (of Focus’ upcoming The World’s End), Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd), and Tracy Morgan (30 Rock).

The Boxtrolls is a comedic fable that unfolds in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era town obsessed with wealth, class, and the stinkiest of fine cheeses. Beneath its charming cobblestone streets dwell the Boxtrolls, foul monsters who crawl out of the sewers at night and steal what the townspeople hold most dear: their children and their cheeses. At least, that’s the legend residents have always believed. In truth, the Boxtrolls are an underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells. The Boxtrolls have raised an orphaned human boy, Eggs (voiced by Mr.Hempstead-Wright), since infancy as one of their dumpster-diving and mechanical junk-collecting own. When the Boxtrolls are targeted by villainous pest exterminator Archibald Snatcher (Mr. Kingsley), who is bent on eradicating them as his ticket to Cheesebridge society, the kindhearted band of tinkerers must turn to their adopted charge and adventurous rich girl Winnie (Ms. Fanning) to bridge two worlds amidst the winds of change – and cheese.

Mr. Knight said, “The Boxtrolls is a visually dazzling mash-up of gripping detective story, absurdist comedy, and steampunk adventure with a surprisingly wholesome heart. It’s Dickens by way of Monty Python. Tony and Graham have crafted a strange and beautiful world replete with fantastical creatures, good-for-nothing reprobates, madcap antics, and rip-roaring feats of derring-do. But at its core, like all LAIKA films, The Boxtrolls is a moving and human story with timelessness and powerful emotional resonance. We’re thrilled to partner with Focus Features and Universal to bring this remarkable story to family audiences around the world.”

Mr. Schamus commented, “Following our successful collaborations on ParaNorman and Coraline, we are delighted to be embarking on a third wondrous adventure with the LAIKA artisans who transform everyday materials into living creatures infused with dimension, humor, and soul. With a wonderfully appealing menagerie of fun characters, and a generous, open heart at its center, The Boxtrolls will be a must-see for family audiences.”

Get Ready For More Die Hard Films

We’re days away from the launch of the latest Die Hard film – A Good Day To Die Hard – but it would seem Bruce Willis is already open to slipping his holster back on again. Talking to the BBC’s One Show, the McClane man was asked by hosts Matt Baker and Alex Jones if we could expect a sixth entry. And he said… wait for it… “Yes.”

Now, despite the fact that Bruce is the Die Hard icon, we’re all going to have to wait and see how A Good Day To Die Hard, in which the NYPD’s grumpiest cop heads to Russia to track down seemingly wayward son Jack (Jai Courtney), only to get mixed up in spy shenanigans, terrorist threats and one potentially explosive situation, performs at the box office.

Plus, while 20th Century Fox is clearly happy to keep the franchise ticking over, it’s likely too early to infer that anything will actually happen. Still, if Bruce likes whatever script the filmmakers come up with, it appears he’s happy to keep on yippee ki-yaying.

Boba Fett & Han Solo Film Could Be On It's Way

Star Wars fans, admit it: you like scoundrels. And you’re about to get more of them in your life.

Yesterday, The Walt Disney Co. unveiled plans to make a number of spin-off movies set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away — in addition to the post-Return of the Jedi trilogy that had already been announced.

Entertainment Weekly has learned details on two of the spin-off projects: A young Han Solo saga, focusing on the wisecracking smuggler’s origin story, and a bounty hunter adventure with Boba Fett at the center of a rogue’s gallery of galactic scum.

Several sources close to the projects confirmed this was the direction the development was taking, although each cautioned it’s still very early in the process and, well, the deal could always be altered futher. Lucasfilm and Disney declined to comment on the information.

The Han Solo story would take place in the time period between Revenge of the Sith and the first Star Wars (now known as A New Hope), so although it’s possible Harrison Ford could appear as a framing device, the movie would require a new actor for the lead — one presumably much younger than even the 35-year-old Ford when he appeared in the 1977 original.

The Boba Fett film would take place either between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, or between Empire and Jedi, where the bounty hunter was last seen plunging unceremoniously into a sarlacc pit. Exactly who would play him isn’t much of a complication – in the original trilogy, he never took off his helmet. And in the prequels, we learned he was the son of the original stormtrooper clone, played by Temuera Morrison, who’s still the right age for the part if his services were required.

In addition to bringing back two fan-favorite characters as the leads of their own films, the Han Solo and Boba Fett projects would also allow Darth Vader, in full-on black death-metal gear, to return as a villain, since placing the spin-offs within the original trilogy would mean he is still alive and hissing. That timeline would also open the door for a return from visit with everyone’s favorite degenerate slug-like gangster, Jabba the Hutt.

Walt Disney Co. chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced the existence of spin-off plans yesterday as part of the company’s quarterly earnings report. He said the screenwriters working of the stand-alone films are Simon Kinberg (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Sherlock Holmes) and Lawrence Kasdan (screenwriter of The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and the filmmaker behind The Big Chill.) The pair are also involved in the drafting of the new trilogy, with Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3) penning the first of the series, which J. J. Abrams has agreed to direct. That film is scheduled to hit theaters in 2015.

There is no indication who might direct the Boba Fett and Han Solo films if they end up coming to fruition. Joe Johnston, director of Captain America and The Rocketeer, originally designed the armor for Boba Fett and told Screenrant he would like to make a film based around the character. Recently, Robert Rodriguez told MTV he would jump at the chance to make a Han Solo film if it were offered to him — although that seemed more like casual interest than a serious proposal.

The recent novel Scoundrels, by sci-fi author Timothy Zahn, focused on the exploits of Solo in the period between A New Hope and Empire as he set up an Ocean’s 11-type heist of a gangster’s fortune. But sources said it was not the basis for any film currently in the works.

As for other spin-offs, Ain’t It Cool reported Monday that a Yoda-centric film may be in the works, and earlier last month Vulture reported Zack Snyder may create a Seven Samurai-inspired Star Wars spin-off, although the filmmaker later said that was untrue.

Lucasfilm has ramped up its development in recent months under the new leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, who stepped in as co-chair of the company as Star Wars creator George Lucas stepped back and sold the company to the Walt Disney Co. Kennedy, who has her eighth nomination for the Best Picture Oscar this year as producer of Lincoln, has a long track record of making films that strike a nerve with the original Star Wars generation, among them E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and everything from Gremlins to The Goonies and the Back to the Future movies.

The question now: If these films do happen, who would you cast as a young Han Solo – or should they cast someone as relatively unknown as Ford once was?

Magnolia takes North American Rights to BEST MAN DOWN

The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today that they’ve acquired North American rights to BEST MAN DOWN, a warmly funny new comedy from writer/director Ted Koland, starring Justin Long, Jess Weixler, Tyler Labine, Addison Timlin and Frances O’Connor. The film was produced by David Abbitt, Jen Roskind and Sharyn Steele.

When their obnoxious and over-served best man, Lumpy (Labine) unexpectedly dies at their destination wedding in Phoenix, bride and groom Kristin (Weixler) and Scott (Long) are forced to cancel their honeymoon and fly home to the snowy Midwest to arrange for his funeral. But when they arrive they realize that there was a lot more to their friend than met the eye.

“We are pleased to be handling BEST MAN DOWN, a charming film that features excellent performances from a completely winning cast,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles.

"It's incredibly exciting to partner with Magnolia on my first film, a company that's made a brand for itself by bringing unique, compelling stories to the screen," said writer/director Ted Koland.

Magnolia plans a summer release through their Ultra VOD program, debuting the film on all VOD platforms a month prior to its theatrical release.

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia’s Director of Acquisitions Peter Van Steemberg with Preferred Content and Gersh on behalf of the filmmakers. BEST MAN DOWN was financed by Koda Entertainment.

Join The Campaign For Chuck Hank And The San Diego Twins

Coatwolf Productions Launches Crowdfunding Campaign For Chuck Hank And The San Diego Twins.

Fans Support Proposed High-Octane Action Sequences on Indiegogo.

Coatwolf Productions, the team behind the 2011 Sundance indie favorite - Bellflower, officially announced today their kick-off crowdfunding campaign for their forthcoming release, Chuck Hank and The San Diego Twins. The full-length feature, currently in pre-production, will bring the same look and grit that fans have come to expect in a surrealist action/drama influenced heavily by ‘80s action films and side-scrolling fighting games. Indiegogo is hosting their efforts live at http://coatwolf.com. Supporters can enjoy rare and exclusive perks for supporting Coatwolf’s efforts including premiere tickets, walk-on roles and even shadowing the crew during production. Filled with gritty charm, action and irreverent humor this original story features larger-than-life characters, explosive stunt sequences, scenic Southern California locations and custom high-performance vehicles. Written and directed by Jonathan Keevil (Bellflower) the film will feature members of the beloved Coatwolf crew that fans know and love - including actors Tyler Dawson and Evan Glodell, as well as 2012 Independent Spirit Award for Best Cinematography nominee, Joel Hodge.

“I think crowdfunding is a better way to finance films and hope that eventually all Coatwolf projects will be made this way. I have been a fan of Jonathan Keevil’s creative work for a long time and am extremely excited to be helping him produce his first feature length film,” says Producer Evan Glodell on supporting the crew’s efforts for the campaign launch. Director Jonathan Keevil also comments on his goal for bringing his vision to the big screen through crowdfunding, “We want to create a visually rich world that honors, but doesn't exploit, a time when a street fight necessitated brass knuckles, chains, cut-off jean jackets, and HUGE Mohawks.”

A turf war has been raging in Oldtown for generations. On one side, The Syndicate – an evil gang of crank-head misfits, who have been set on muscling the San Diego family out of the parcel of land they own in the center of town. On the other side, the San Diego family: Tony and Johnny - twin brothers - and their sister Salsa are the last of a bloodline that stretches back for generations. Their mother, father and brothers were all brutally murdered in violent clashes with The Syndicate over the years. Now the Syndicate is set on crushing the last remnants of the San Diego family, and taking over Oldtown for good. When they kidnap Salsa and hold her for ransom, all hell breaks loose. The twins and their best friend Chuck Hank must decide whether to hand over the deed to their family's land in order to save their sister or fight, the Final Fight!

https://twitter.com/shazismental

Set in the fictional town of Dolphin Heads, MENTAL is written and directed by PJ Hogan and produced by Jerry Zucker, Janet Zucker, Todd Fellman and Jocelyn Moorhouse. It stars Golden Globe® Winner Toni Collette (United States of Tara, Little Miss Sunshine, About A Boy, The Sixth Sense) in a film that re-unites her with PJ Hogan for the first time since the iconic Muriel’s Wedding seventeen years ago.

The Moochmore girls are all certain they suffer from some sort of mental illness, because if they’re not crazy they’re just unpopular. The combination of Shirley’s five rambunctious daughters and her philandering husband Barry becomes too much for her to bear and she is committed to a mental institution.

Barry, a small time politician is left to take care of five girls who he barely knows. Overwhelmed, he impulsively picks up Shaz, a colorful hitchhiker on the side of the road, and installs her as the girls’ nanny. Shaz is charismatic, hot tempered, inspiring, and completely nuts. However she proves to be exactly what the Moochmore family needs.

Toni Collette accompanies Liev Schreiber(Salt, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and a huge A-list Australian cast including Anthony LaPaglia (Without A Trace, Balibo) as Barry Moochmore and Rebecca Gibney (Packed to the Rafters) as Shirley Moochmore, Kerry Fox (Cloudstreet, Bright Star), Caroline Goodall (Dorian Gray) Deborah Mailman (Offspring, Bran Nue Dae), and Sam Clark (Neighbours). The Moochmore girls — Coral, Michelle, Leanne, Kayleen and Jane — introduce five new stars to the big screen.

Hitman Reboot Starring Paul Walker

Fox International Productions is rebooting Hitman, the live action film adaptation of the hit Square Enix video game. They’ve set The Fast And The Furious‘s Paul Walker to star in Agent 47, an action film that was written by A Good Day To Die Hard‘s Skip Woods and Michael Finch and will be directed by Aleksander Bach, a highly regarded commercials director making his feature helming debut.

This gives a new start to Hitman, which was turned into a 2007 film that starred Timothy Olyphant as the genetically engineered elite assassin with the barcode tattooed on the back of his head. Woods wrote that movie, which wasn’t a rave with the critics, but grossed $100 million worldwide. The new film, with Walker playing the lethal protagonist, will shoot in Berlin and Singapore this summer after Walker completes a global press tour for Fast And Furious 6. Walker will shave his head and make this his first big film after Fast 6, whose trailer has been generating 20,000 tweets an hour since it debuted during Sunday’s Super Bowl. Production on the film begins in June.

FIP, led by Sanford Panitch, sees this as a potential gold mine both in the U.S. but especially in the overseas marketplace, where the video game has moved over 20 million units and where Walker has done very well with Universal’s race car franchise and films like Eight Below. Agent 47 will be produced by Chuck Gordon, Alex Young, and Adrian Askarieh. Daniel Alter will be exec producer. 20th Century Fox will distribute in the US and worldwide.

Star Wars Stand Alone Film In The Works

"Yoda: Jedi Master" has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

Or maybe just "The Jedi Master." Well, before it can have a title, it has to actually exist, and for now a stand-alone "Star Wars" film that puts the powerful pint-sized denizen of Dagobah front and center is just the latest rumor to come out of a galaxy far, far away (well, not that far anymore -- it's now at Disneyland, after all).

Ain't It Cool News first brought word that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy might be doing a lot more than just having secret meetings with J.J. Abrams as she's apparently in the early stages of what Disney does best: milking a brand for all it's worth. Sure, Abrams is going to be directing "Episode VII," but there's more than just a new "Star Wars" trilogy in store -- we're going to be getting a bunch of spinoff films as well, and if Zack Snyder's rumored (and since denied) Jedi-centric riff on "Seven Samurai" isn't going to be the first one out of the gate, then maybe a Yoda movie will be.

Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger has since confirmed in an interiew with CNBC that the studio is indeed planning a series of stand-alone character-based "Star Wars" films that will be separate from the new trilogy. Lawrence Kasdan, who penned "The Empire Strikes Back and "Return of the Jedi," and Simon Kinberg, who just wrote "X-Men: Days of Future Past" for director Bryan Singer, are currently hard at work on the spinoff projects, though of course there's no word on which characters will be involved. AICN reports that the Yoda film is top priority, though there are currently no plot details to speak of (our guess would be it's an origin story -- actually, how about "Begin, Yoda Shall" as a title?). Disney declined to comment on whether a Yoda-centered spinoff is in the works.

Other possible spinoff films include one that focuses on Jabba the Hutt (potentially the "Goodfellas" of the "Star Wars" universe?) that was apparently pitched by George Lucas himself -- and let's not forget that Joe Johnston, who's in good with Disney after directing "Captain America: The First Avenger," once expressed his desire to call the shots on a movie featuring everyone's favorite bounty hunter, Boba Fett.

Let's not get too carried away, though ... and hope that Disney doesn't, either. "Star Wars" is not "The Avengers." Making a bunch of spinoff movies along with a new trilogy could very well make the Death Star explode before it's fully operational. Maybe it's best to see how it goes with "Episode VII" and evaluate from there, guys? We know you're excited about your new playset but you don't want to wear it out when it's still barely out of the box.
