Doctor Strange News. Tom Hardy & Benedict Cumberbatch Interested?

So how about Doctor Strange? Marvel is putting together its cast list, and Deadline is reporting that Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch are on it. While Marvel has teased this property with mentions in films including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the film solidified and felt urgent when Scott Derrickson tweeted this week that he will direct the script by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.

The character has been around since the early 1960s, during that crazy period where just about all the spandex-clad heroes in all the Hollywood blockbusters were hatched at Marvel Comics headquarters (that might be a movie). Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created the character in 1963 as a neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, protecting Earth against magical and mystical threats with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing. These two guys aren’t the only ones in the mix, but let’s face it, they are both poised to become major stars. Hardy, by way of playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, is closer. He just starred in the superb Steven Knight-directed drama Locke, and he wrapped Child 44 and Mad Max: Fury Road. Cumberbatch, coming off August: Osage County and 12 Years A Slave, next will be seen starring in the Morten Tyldum-directed Imitation Game, which The Weinstein Company opens on November 21 during Oscar season. Both of them have been lining up movies left and right, so scheduling might be an issue. We’ll see who Marvel ultimately lands, but it’s hard to go wrong either way here if one of these guys get the job.

A Medusa Film Is On It's Way

Sony Pictures Animation had some success in 2012 exploiting supernatural creatures for comedy with Hotel Transylvania. A sequel is already in the works, and the company has decided to stick with unusual leading characters, picking up a pitch focusing on the mythical Medusa and hiring My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic cartoon series creator Lauren Faust to direct it.

Antz co-writer Todd Alcott and producer Holly Golden were behind the original comedy concept, which appears to be following the current trend for revisionist fantasy tales by exploring the genesis of the Greek monster. Our heroine will be a decent, beautiful young girl who annoys the wrong goddess. Turned into the snake-haired demon, she learns to embrace her differences.

"I love the originality of it, the comedy take on Medusa,” Michelle Raimo-Kouyate, president of production at Sony Animation, tells The Wrap. “The minute I heard it, it felt ingenious and clever and funny.”

While we’re not sure that the whole “embracing what makes you unique” concept sounds as fresh and original to us, Faust certainly has the chops to make something like this work, given the gold she spun from the classic 1980s Hasbro pony property. “In recent years, with movies like Tangled and Frozen, and not to toot my own horn, the popularity of My Little Pony, people are more open to female protagonists,” Faust says in a statement. “Just because something is about a girl, that doesn't mean it's not for them.” Maleficent ($183 million worldwide and counting) certainly seems to prove her right…

Emma Watson & Miles Teller Head To La La Land

Writer/director Damien Chazelle has already enjoyed festival success with his indie pic Whiplash. He’s looking to follow that up with another tale of talented young folk struggling against the odds and wants Miles Teller and Emma Watson to star in La La Land.

The film follows two dreamers looking to find fame in Los Angeles, who meet and discover a love connection. There’s aspiring actress Mia (Watson, Chazelle hopes), who is lonely and trying to fit in to a confusing new city, and cocky, charismatic jazz pianist Sebastian (Teller), who learns that juggling a relationship and art in the unforgiving City of Angels is no easy task.

Music will also play a big part of the movie, with Chazelle’s director’s statement describing his intent: ”I’d like to make a contemporary musical about LA, starting with the LA we know but slowly building to a vision of the city as romantic metropolis–one that is actually worthy of the dreams it inspires. I'd like to make a musical about the way LA's peculiar rhythms can push its residents to the edge of their emotions–be they hope, desperation or love.”

While that bare synopsis sounds a bit Rock Of Ages to us, we're guessing there will be significantly fewer mullets in this effort.

Teller, of course, was the lead in Whiplash, so he’s the more likely of the two to sign on given the reaction to his performance and his easy working relationship with Chazelle. Watson might be a tougher sell, but we’re guessing that Chazelle’s first film will act as a healthy calling card.

Life Itself Review: Roger Ebert Would Be Proud

The poignant and powerful documentary about Roger Ebert separates the myth from the man.

One of my earliest memories is sitting in front of a 13" black and white television in my bedroom, watching PBS' Sneak Previews with film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert raving about Christopher Reeve in Superman. We had never seen anything like this before, and the effect they would have on both the industry and moviegoers was profound. The Steve James documentary Life Itself puts that into perspective, crafting a personal and powerful story that's at once difficult to watch but important in its message.

Given unfettered access to what would be Ebert's final four months, James set out to record the life and times of Hollywood's most powerful film critic. The images of Ebert's last months are stunning: missing most of his jaw and confined to a wheelchair for long periods, he's undetermined and feisty as ever, joking with medical staff as they painfully drain fluid from his throat while typing into a computer and writing reviews. From there, James moves into a unique documentary that's more thematic than chronological, using responses from Ebert's emails to guide his way to a sit-down that sadly never happened.

James - who received tremendous support from Ebert for his film Hoop Dreams - lovingly but honestly rewinds the clock to show a different kind of man than the public persona. We see Ebert early in his career, not as a critic, but surprisingly as a social commentator of the turbulent 1960's. And although it's his work at The Chicago Sun-Times that would eventually focus his voice, Ebert's admitted battle with alcoholism in 1979 threatened to end his career. We learn of his late marriage to Chaz and his battles with fellow critic Gene Siskel - who died from cancer in 1999 - that made Ebert into the cultural icon he eventually became.

James smartly sprinkles in the 2011 memoir Life Itself - which is read by a voice actor that sounds just like him - along with interviews by filmmakers Werner Herzog and Martin Scorsese, who's also executive producer. An intensely personal tale, Life focuses not just on Ebert the man but as the critic who changed the American dialogue. James doesn't shower his topic with adoration, allowing pundits like Roger Corliss to rip Ebert for his signature thumbs-up, thumbs-down judgments. It's an interesting path to take, but one that ultimately works.

In the end, Life Itself celebrates a life spent in movie theaters, richly but honestly told in a fitting epitaph to Ebert's work. We might not like the modern era of cutthroat journalism, but we can certainly see a portion of its genesis in James' very good documentary.

Life Itself is rated R for brief sexual images/nudity and language and has a runtime of 116 minutes.

Win Tickets To An Advance Screening For #OBVIOUSCHILD In San Francisco

Win Tickets To An Advance For OBVIOUS CHILD on Monday, June 9th at 7:00PM in San Francisco.

For aspiring comedian Donna Stern, everyday life as a female twenty-something provides ample material for her incredibly relatable brand of humor. On stage, Donna is unapologetically herself, joking about topics as intimate as her sex life and as crude as her day-old underwear. But when Donna gets dumped, loses her job, and finds herself pregnant just in time for Valentine’s Day, she has to navigate the murky waters of independent adulthood for the first time. As she grapples with an uncertain financial future, an unwanted pregnancy, and a surprising new suitor, Donna begins to discover that the most terrifying thing about adulthood isn’t facing it all on her own.

It's allowing herself to accept the support and love of others. And be truly vulnerable. Never failing to find the comedy and humanity in each awkward situation she encounters, Donna finds out along the way what it means to be as brave in life as she is on stage. Anchored by a breakout performance from Jenny Slate, OBVIOUS CHILD is a winning discovery, packed tight with raw, energetic comedy and moments of poignant human honesty. Writer/Director Gillian Robespierre handles the topic of Donna's unwanted pregnancy with a refreshing matter-of-factness rarely seen onscreen. And with Donna, Slate and Robespierre have crafted a character for the ages – a female audiences will recognize, cheer for, and love.

@JessicaCameron_ To Star In "Save Yourself"

SURVIVAL IS NOT AN OPTION” IN THE NEW FEMALE-DRIVEN HORROR FILM ‘SAVE YOURSELF’ SHOOTING THIS SUMMER.

Scream Queen Jessica Cameron Set to Star in Ryan M. Andrews’ Latest Horror Film.

Following the success of his recent features, SICK, a festival favorite and Black Eve, currently
available on DVD, award-winning director Ryan M. Andrews is set to direct his originally
scripted Save Yourself this summer. Scream Queen Jessica Cameron will be starring in as well as producing this sexy horror flick along with Producer Emma Sutherland. Overseeing the
project are executive producers Pino Halili and Allen Ormerod from multi-award winning studio
Post City Sound Inc.

The plotline for Save Yourself is as follows: En route to L.A., director Crystal Lacroix, along
with by-the-numbers producer Dawn Summerville, neurotic writer Lizzy Miller, and star sisters
Kim and Sasha Tobin, are riding high after a successful screening of their new horror film. But
when Crystal goes missing at a rest stop, their mood suddenly changes. The others, splitting up
to search for Crystal, spot an isolated farmhouse and enlist the help of its owners, quickly
discovering that appearances are not always what they seem. Life imitates art as all five ladies
find themselves pitted against a deranged couple hell-bent on using them for their mysterious
research. Who will survive and what will be the fate of their ultimate discovery?

Having worked together in the past, Andrews and Cameron have discussed collaborating on a
feature for years. Together they decided that Ryan’s script Save Yourself is the ideal choice.
Award winning actor Ry Barrett (Neverlost, Desperate Souls, Antisocial) will join the cast as
Save Yourself's intense villain. This will be the first time Andrews, Cameron and Barret have
collaborated since last year’s experimental short film Klymene.

Cameron’s latest film Truth or Dare has won more than two-dozen awards playing the festival
circuit. She is also known for such films as the Roger Corman produced Camel Spiders,
currently airing on the SyFy channel, and Steven C. Miller’s remake of Silent Night. Save
Yourself marks Cameron’s 5th movie in under a year in which she is starring as well as
producing.

Cameron was recently quoted as saying “This script is the sexiest and smartest female-driven
horror flick that I have had the pleasure to read and I cannot wait to bring it to life with Ryan”
Talking about the female-driven story Andrews says, “I love Jean-Luc Godard’s quote ‘all you
need for a movie is a gun and a girl.’ In the same way all you need for a horror is blood and a
girl - and we’ve got five girls. It’s definitely going to be fun and sexy, but most importantly the
women are not just one-dimensional. There is a lot of depth and development to their characters.
And as a die-hard horror fan, I know just how important this is. It can’t just be another pretty
face. There needs to be layers there for anyone to care when that face gets smashed.”

Filming begins later this year in Ontario, Canada. Expect more Save Yourself updates including
full cast details coming soon! Please “Like” Save Yourself’s Facebook fan page and follow them
on Twitter for more up-to-date information about this exciting new horror film!

The Fault in Our Stars Review: Overly-long Cryfest

The Fault in Our Stars is way too long but says so little.

"This is the truth. Sorry." This begins the YA cry-fest The Fault in Our Stars, a film about the difficult subject of teen cancer. And while it tries to tell the truth about love in the waning months of life, Fault never gets to the heart of the matter.

Starring Shailene Woodley, Fault centers around 16-year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster, a child who's lived with cancer for most of her life. She's a survivor, but the by-product has lessened her ability to breathe, forcing her to don an oxygen tank 24/7. It's at a cancer support group that she meets the 18-year-old Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort), a former basketball star whose prosthetic leg doesn't dull his sense of humor or from trying to woo Hazel. Soon, the two become inseparable, with Hazel sharing a favorite book by the author Van Houten (Willem Dafoe) and wishing he would answer her questions about the book's odd ending. The two decide to fly to Amsterdam to meet him, but ultimately fall in love instead. As cancer returns to claim one life, the other must find a way to both live without their soulmate and survive the spectre of death.

Writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber walk a very fine line in adapting John Green's best-selling novel into a movie, many times tripping over sentimentality in the process. Their efforts to find a balance between a telling a human story of survival and a relationship cut short are constantly at odds, particularly as the film nears its conclusion. The result is something that feels more like an afternoon special than a poignant and powerful message about chasing your dreams, or coming to terms with death, or blah blah blah. Don't get us wrong: no parent should have to bury their children, but Fault doesn't handle the bigger picture of death all that well. While the writing team tells the first part of this film well enough - one that sees our lovers come together - they totally miss a far more powerful one, namely in how one must now live without the other.

Director John Boone helps only slightly by getting good performances from Woodley and parent Laura Dern. Elgort doesn't have Woodley's stage presence, nor does he have the range of emotions that come through Woodley's expressive eyes. She is a loveable lead, and her simple makeup is a contrast to the strength which she portrays Hazel - she's tough without being angry, bright without being arrogant, and grounded about her chances of survival. She's the quiet hero, which is in strict contrast to Elgort, whose flourishes include brandishing an unlit cigarette as an act of defiance against his status. His spark is somewhat welcome but not in any way reflective of most 18-year-olds. But beyodn that, the pieces here don't fit especially well: Boone surrounds Fault with too many sappy Grey's Anatomy-like ballads and even takes questionable steps by placing our teens in none other than Anne Frank's house while on their tour to Amsterdam. The reasons for this - and its ultimate effect - are never explored, representing a lost opportunity and wasted screen time.

Fault runs at a dragging 125 minutes, but it feels as though the last 15 minutes was cut from the film - we never learn Hazel's fate, front-loading the first act to the point that the third is nearly dropped in our laps, perhaps echoing the plot of Hazel's book. Dafoe is reduced to a crass, unsympathetic drunk whose hand-delivery of Gus' last words to Hazel feels entirely unnecessary, even though he spurns the couple when they meet in Amsterdam. His entire story is unessential to the plot, offering only superficial details about a connection that should never have been made in the first place, or perhaps done a lot better.

Woodley is definitely being groomed for a Jennifer Lawrence-type career, starring in big-budget flicks like Divergent while seeking smaller roles that could eventually nab Oscar glory. Fault is not that film - it sugar-coats a devastating disease with too many tears and promises left unfulfilled.

We try to leave our masculinity at the door for every picture, analyzing each based on its merits. So we feel confident in stating our concerns for Fault, which glosses over the details of cancer while taking too long to tell only half of the story. It's an overly-long cryfest that will connect with Woodley's superfans, while the guys will be begging to see Godzilla or X-Men. Others not tied to Woodley will emerge from the theater wondering why the high stakes established in Act 1 were overly softened by the melodramatic and drawn-out end. It might sell more tickets than the far-superior Edge of Tomorrow, but that doesn't mean it's better.

The Fault in Our Stars is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, some sexuality and brief strong language and has a runtime of 125 minutes.

Denzel Washington To Star In The Magnificent Seven

Lob your mind back a few days – to last week, in fact – when we reported on Training Day director Antoine Fuqua’s surging fortunes and in-demand status. Among several projects he’s pondering is the long-gestating new remake of The Magnificent Seven. And according to Variety, he wants cinema pal Denzel Washington to star.

The news, which was originally broken as a rumor by the Schmoes Know team, is an unsurprising one given the close bond they've formed across Training Day and, more recently, on The Equalizer. And while neither is locked in yet, the chance to work together again, and for Washington to star in a Western, would seem to be a tempting opportunity.

Originally directed by John Sturges in 1960, The Magnificent Seven found the likes of Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn and Robert Vaughn as gunslingers that unite to help a Mexican village take on bandits. The movie itself was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s seminal The Seven Samurai. John Lee Hancock and True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto are among the writers who have worked on the script for this version so far, with Tony Scott attached to direct at one point and Tom Cruise previously considering starring.

Bill Condon Set To Direct Beauty & The Beast Live Action Film

With the recent release of “Maleficent,” which grossed more than $170 million worldwide in its opening weekend, Disney is working fast on its next live-action fairy-tale adaptation.

Bill Condon is set to direct a live-action version of “Beauty and the Beast” for Disney.

Evan Spiliotopoulos is writing the script with Mandeville Films producing.

The studio’s 1991 animated feature version of “Beauty and the Beast” grossed more than $375 million worldwide, spawned a Broadway play and became one of the few animated pics to receive a best picture Oscar nomination.

Disney has been on a roll lately thanks to successful updates of literary classics like “Alice and Wonderland” and “The Wizard of Oz” and reinventions of its own stories into big box office hits. The Mouse House is also developing a live-action version of “The Jungle Book,” which has Jon Favreau directing, and its “Cinderella,” helmed by Kenneth Branagh, is set to bow next March.

Condon is best known for his hit feature adaptation of the musical “Dreamgirls,” and his experience in helming a film with strong musical elements will help this film, which could very easily go down that path. Condon also penned the script to the widely successful adaptation of musical “Chicago.”

He also delivered two of the best reviewed films in the “Twilight” series and most recently adapted the script to Fox’s “The Greatest Showman on Earth.”
