A Cirque do Soleil arena touring show inspired by James Cameron's movie blockbuster “Avatar” is in the works, the director and the troupe said Thursday.
Cirque du Soleil and Cameron and Jon Landau's Lightstorm Entertainment will create the project. The show is expected to debut with a global tour next year, before the first of three upcoming “Avatar” sequels, for which the director is currently in pre-production.
Twentieth Century Fox, which financed and distributed “Avatar” and upcoming sequels, is also a partner on the live show.
“Our relationship with Jim Cameron began with my visit at his ‘Avatar’ cutting room,” said Daniel Lamarre, Cirque du Soleil president and chief executive. “I am thrilled that almost five years later, Cirque du Soleil will be able to explore the very inspirational ‘Avatar’ realm for the live stage.”
Cirque du Soleil and Lightstorm Entertainment leadership will meet and put in place a dedicated creative team, which will be announced at a later date.
