Charlie's Angles Are Coming To A Television Set Near You

Charlie's Angles Are Coming To A Television Set Near You

Who do you want to see play "Charlie’s Angels?"

ABC is close to giving a pilot order to a modern version of the classic 1970s TV actioner "Charlie’s Angels."

Josh Friedman, who recently adapted the "Terminator" franchise for his Fox series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," is onboard to write and exec produce the new "Angels."

Also involved are original "Charlie’s Angels" producer Leonard Goldberg, who launched the series with Aaron Spelling in 1976, as well as Drew Barrymore, who starred in and produced the 2000 film version and its sequel. Sony Pictures TV is the studio.

Insiders said that ABC Entertainment Group topper Steve McPherson is particularly high on this project.

But ABC is riding high this fall with its adaptation of another such property, "V," which bowed to boffo numbers. And insiders note that most of those other properties had laid dormant for some time, while "Charlie's Angeles" was just recently a strong movie franchise. Plus, there's the part where "Charlie's Angels" will make some noise by finding three new ass-kicking female stars.

Sony is also busy adapting another 1970s Spelling (and Goldberg-produced) property, "Fantasy Island" — but as a reality show, along with Mark Burnett. No U.S. network is attached as of yet to that project, which was announced last month at the Mipcom TV confab.

The original "Charlie’s Angels" ran from 1976-81 and was back in the news this summer following the death of original star Farrah Fawcett.

Spelling attempted a revival in 1988, sealing a deal to produce a version called "Angels 88" for Fox. That show never got off the ground, but it eventually led to Spelling’s deal to produce the original "Beverly Hills 90210" (now also enjoying a revival, via the CW).

The franchise then lay dormant until 2000, when the McG-helmed "Charlie’s Angels" feature, starring Barrymore, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz, was a box office hit. Movie spawned a second edition, "Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle."

It also led to an earlier attempt at a TV series revival, in 2004. That version was written for ABC (again, through Sony) by a pre-"Lost" Carlton Cuse and John Wirth and given a script-plus-penalty order but ultimately didn’t go to pilot.

This time around, a pilot is expected to be greenlit.

Super Troopers 2 Being Developed Now

Super Troopers 2 Being Developed Now

The Broken Lizard comedy team confirms that they’re three drafts into Super Troopers 2, they have the financing, they’ll soon prepare to take the movie to Fox, and Brian Cox is definitely planning on reprising his role.

This morning I had the pleasure of interviewing Jay Chandrasekhar, Paul Soter, Steve Lemme, and Erik Stolhanske — four of the five members of Broken Lizard, the guys behind Super Troopers, Club Dread, and Beerfest. The bulk of the interview was devoted to their newest comedy, The Slammin’ Salmon, which opens on December 11th, so expect the full interview in a couple of weeks. I did, however, manage to get some solid details about the much-rumored Super Troopers 2.

“We have the financing,” Chandrasekhar said. “So we’re going to try to make a deal with Fox.”

“We’re like, three drafts into it,” Lemme added. “It’s funny, because we have an independent financier — we have a lot of independent financiers — who are like, ‘Give us that fucking movie.’ And we’re like, ‘We will, we will but we have to go through a studio first.’ But it’s a great thing to go to a studio and say, ‘We have the money.’”

The guys also revealed that the movie, which will take place where the first one left off, will have a role for Captain O’Hagan, the character played by Brian Cox in the original — and that Cox would be back.

“Oh, yeah. Yep. He’ll be in it,” Chandrasekhar said. “I mean, he loved [the first one]. He loved it.”

“Yeah, I ran into him last year and he said he’s approached more about Super Troopers than any of the films he’s done,” Soter added. “Which is amazing, because you look now at some of the films he’s done — it’s pretty cool.”

“He wanted to play in a movie where he could be like Jerry Lewis, because he’s always been a big Jerry Lewis fan,” Chandrasekhar said.

So there you have it. They also talked about a few of their other upcoming projects, including Pot Quest — they can’t make a straightforward Potfest because it’ll be at a different studio — and Rogue Scholars, about a group of college professors who go to war with a campus club, so keep an eye out for the full interview.

Ratings For" V "Come Down Crashing

Ratings For" V "Come Down Crashing

After last week's record-setting premiere, ABC's "V" was destined to drop in the ratings for episode two.

Driven by 1980s nostalgia and plenty of marketing, viewer curiosity ran high for the debut -- a pattern we've seen in recent years for network remakes of "Knight Rider," "90210" and "American Gladiators." Tuesday night's decline, therefore, was not exactly surprising ... yet it was pretty steep.

The second "V" hour was seen by 10.7 million viewers and drew a 3.8 rating among adults 18-49, down 27% from last week. That's the largest fall from a premiere we've seen for a scripted show this season.

The rating is still a successful number for a freshman drama. If "V" can remain anywhere close to this neighborhood, the show will be fine.

The drop put "V" into second place at 8 p.m., with CBS' "NCIS" (21 million, 4.4) resuming control of the time period. The swing is similar to when ABC debuted "FlashForward" against CBS' time-period champion "Survivor" at 8 p.m. on Thursdays, momentarily upsetting the balance, before "Survivor" popped up again ("NCIS" and "Survivor" -- they weeble and they wobble but they don't fall down).

CBS won the night, with "NCIS," "NCIS: LA" (16.2 million, 3.7) and "Good Wife" (13.4 million, 2.8) all slightly up from last week.

After "V," second-place ABC aired "Dancing With the Stars" results show (16.2 million, 3.5), up 13% and featured Susan Boyle as a guest, and includes a minute of "V" overrun. At 10 p.m., a special, "In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts: All Access Nashville" (9.3 million, 2.3), improved significantly on last week's performance of "The Forgotten" in the slot.

NBC was close behind ABC with "Biggest Loser" (9.7 million, 3.8) perking up 9% this week. "The Jay Leno Show" (5.8 million, 1.9) was down a tenth, but continues to deliver its highest rating on Tuesdays despite increased competition from ABC this week. Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance" (5.8 million, 2.3) fell 8%.

The CW has been so intent on delivering contemporary girls-texting-each-other soaps, yet what's interesting this season is that it's the network's genre-driven shows -- new series "Vampire Diaries" and ultra-veteran "Smallville" -- that have been delivering the most surprising numbers. Perhaps next year, the CW should develop fewer fashionable socialites and more magic and mythology?

The CW's "90210" (2.1 million, 1.2) was up 20% and matched its season high ... yet "Melrose Place" (1.3 million, 0.7) matched its season low. Heather Locklear shows up on "Melrose" next week.

Fright Night Remake Is A Go

Fright Night Remake Is A Go

Looks like they will remake almost any movie made in the 80's. Even the really bad ones. Who Really wants to see a remake of this fill? Please raise your hands.

Only up side about this film will be that it is being penned by "Mad Men" writer-producer Marti Noxon.

The original "Fright Night," released in 1985, was written and directed by Tom Holland and starred Chris Sarandon, Roddy McDowall and William Ragsdale. Ragsdale played a teenager who discovers his neighbors are vampires.

The new version will keep the comedy-horror tone while modernizing the effects.

Producers Michael De Luca, Michael Gaeta and Alison Rosenzweig set up the "Fright Night" project in May. DreamWorks co-president of production Mark Sourian is overseeing for the studio.

Mike Tyson Detained At Airport

Iron Mike Tyson In Trouble Again.

Former boxing champ Mike Tyson was detained by police at Los Angeles International Airport Wednesday afternoon while they investigated a scuffle between the former boxing champ and a photographer, police said.

Tyson, 43, was taken into custody by airport police after an incident at the United Airlines ticket counter at about 4:30 p.m., according to police Sgt. Jim Holcomb.

The photographer, who was following Tyson, fell to the floor after one punch from Tyson, Holcomb told CNN TV affiliate KABC.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment of a cut to his forehead suffered when he hit the floor, Holcomb said.

Tyson and the photographer each told police they wanted to file battery charges against the other, he said.

Tyson was put in a holding cell at the airport police station during the investigation, he said.

Tyson, former holder of the three major heavyweight world titles, retired from competitive professional boxing in 2005.

Smallville 2 Hour Movie Premiere “Society” and “Legends”

Smallville 2 Hour Movie Premiere “Society” and “Legends”

I’ve got some big news for all my Super friends out there.

I’m hearing The CW has decided to package Smallville’s upcoming (and highly-anticipated) Justice Society-themed two-parter into a two-hour movie event airing on Jan. 29.

The Geoff Johns-penned episodes — titled “Society” and “Legends” and featuring such DC Comics stalwarts as Stargirl (Britt Irvin) , Hawkman (Michael Shanks) , and Dr. Fate (Brent Stait) — were originally designed to air separately. But, according to Smallville insiders, CW execs felt they could get more mileage out of combining them.

Twilight's Edward and Jacob's Love Triangle With Bella

Twilight's Edward and Jacob's Love Triangle With Bella

Team Edward and Team Jacob face off in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third film in the vampire series based on Stephenie Meyers' best-selling books, and they share a lot of screen time in the third installment.

After Bella (Kristen Stewart) falls for vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) in Twilight, Edward breaks up with her in New Moon, and Jacob (Taylor Lautner) gains traction by supporting Bella in her time of need. It doesn't hurt that he's a buff werewolf who frequently shows off his glistening pecs in the rain. (Spoilers ahead!)

The third film, Eclipse, brings the love triangle to a boil in a literal three-way scene. "I loved playing with the three characters together," Stewart said. "There's literally a scene where Edward and Jacob, who are mortal enemies, are in a tent with a sleeping Bella in between them. It's a ridiculous circumstance to find yourself in."

Lautner elaborated on the situation. "Edward is forced to let me sleep in the same sleeping bag as Bella, just so she doesn't die."

In a dire situation, the undead Edward does not possess the body heat to keep his beloved from freezing to death. Werewolves, however, run a temperature of 108 degrees. "She's shivering to death, and I'm warm," Lautner continued. "I'm the only thing at that moment that can keep her alive."

Watching the two hunks fight over Bella is what the Twilight fandom is all about and is why fans have divided themselves into Team Edward and Team Jacob. Lautner and Pattinson play it up on screen.

"It's a funny scene," Lautner said. "There's a lot of ribbing going on between Jacob and Edward."

The upcoming second movie, New Moon, brings Edward and Jacob together only at the end, so the tent scene in Eclipse will really be the payoff of those tensions.

"It was weird, because I hardly did any scenes with Taylor [in New Moon]," Pattinson said. "We just did the scenes at the beginning and the scenes at the end, and he had his entire storyline develop without me being around, which is interesting, because I had no idea where his performance was going. It wasn't really a competition or anything. It was all independent. Whereas in Eclipse, we did scenes together, all the time, with Bella. It really shows the dynamic in that one."

New Moon opens Nov. 20. Eclipse is coming June 30, 2010.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson To Star In Shazam Film

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson To Star In Shazam Film

Ryan Reynolds going to play every super hero out there? Not Captain Marvel.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is going to star as Black Adam in the new Shazam film. I would love to see him finally play a villain in a film.

Most of his films he has always been the hero, this would be a nice change for him. Like the old days when he was the villain for some point in WWE.

Bill Birch, the co-writer of the upcoming “Shazam” feature film has revealed that Ryan Reynolds was his first choice to portray Captain Marvel on the big screen.

“I always thought Ryan Reynolds would have been interesting but now that he’s Green Lantern that’s not an option,” Birch told Cinefools. Birch also elaborated on whether he believes Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is still onboard to play Captain Marvel’s nemesis, Black Adam.

“My rule of thumb is that no actor is committed to do a movie until the first day of shooting is over with,” Birch explained. “I know that ['Shazam' Director] Pete Segal and Dwayne have a relationship that was solidified when Pete directed 'Get Smart.' As far as him being committed? I'm sure it'll all depend on the script.”

The “Shazam” film received a much needed jolt back in August when it was announced that comic scribe Geoff Johns had signed on to co-write the script with Birch. Birch also stated that he and Johns are writing a completely new draft, confirming what Johnson told MTV News back in March.

“Geoff and I are in the thick of it, creating a kickass update that still honors the lore that's been created in over 50 years of Marvel story lines.” Birch said.

In the wake of “The Dark Knight”, there were rumors that Warner Brothers wanted all subsequent DC Superhero movies to feature a similar dark tone. These rumors gained credence when former “Shazam” screenwriter John August said that the studio wanted the film to be “edgier.” However, Birch was quick to shoot down that speculation.

“The way the story is shaking out, Geoff and I see this not as 'dark' as ‘Dark Knight’ but definitely as cool. It'll probably end up with a PG-13 rating,” Birch related. “Tonally I think it's important to successfully find the balance of comedy and danger in the story. That’s a major aspect I’m focusing on. Frankly hitting the right tone is what’s going to either get this made or keep it in development hell.”

Wanda and Sheneneh To Get Their Own Film. Remember Them?

Wanda and Sheneneh To Get Their Own Film. Remember Them?

It all started with a skit on the BET Awards Show and now it's turning into a film.

I did enjoy Wanda and Sheneneh when they were on their respected shows, but to make a movie with both of them. Wow unheard of.

Screen Gems has picked up the rights to Sheneneh And Wanda, a comedy about two African-American ladies who start robbing banks. Oh, and the ladies in question will be played, in full-on drag, by Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence.

Both Sheneneh and the cross-eyed Wanda have been knocking about for years – Lawrence came up with Sheneneh on his self-titled TV show, while Foxx played Wanda during his In Living Color days – but nobody had the bright idea of combining the two in an actual, honest-to-goodness movie until June of this year, when the two graced the BET Awards by making a fake trailer for a fake movie, Skank Robbers, which united the duo.

Reaction to the trailer – which actually has a couple of decent lines in it, and is most notable for Foxx’s wild overacting – was overwhelmingly positive. So much so, in fact, that the duo – who have been looking for a movie to work on together for a while, apparently – decided to develop it as a full-blown movie, ignoring the fact that, yet again, this is a movie that could easily have wound up on the CV of the 30 Rock character, Tracy Jordan.

We’re not surprised about Lawrence’s involvement. The man has combined cross-dressing and terrible movies before, in Big Momma’s House and its sequel. But we have to admit to being hugely disappointed in Foxx. Yes, Jamie, we know you started in comedy. Yes, we know that you don’t get to flex those muscles very much these days, even though you’ve got Valentine’s Day and Due Date coming up. But Good God, man, you have an Oscar – you’re better than this!

Still, we’re prepared to give Sheneneh And Wanda a chance. After all, Foxx is a very funny guy, and he’s writing the script (both men are producing). Like we said, there are some decent lines in the trailer, and the production values are excellent. But we also have a feeling that this will be a one-joke movie that struggles to sustain that joke over the course of ninety minutes. We hope we’re wrong.

No director is currently attached, but with Screen Gems fast-tracking the project, expect that to change fairly quickly.

"Sgt. Rock" Coming To A Theater Near You

"Sgt. Rock" Coming To A Theater Near You

“Sgt. Rock,” a long-gestating project based on the World War II hero from DC Comics, is moving forward … by going into the future.

The only down side to this film being made is that it will be set in the future not during WWII. I feel that this direction will kill the film.

Francis Lawrence is attached to direct, and Chad St. John, who wrote the spec “The Days Before,” is charged with writing the new take. Joel Silver, who has been steering the project for nearly 20 years, is teaming with Akiva Goldsman, who recently boarded as producer, to bring the project to the big screen via Warner Bros.

Sgt. Frank Rock was the leader of his infantry unit, Easy Company. He first appeared in a 1959 issue of “Our Army at War.” In 1977, the comic was renamed “Sgt. Rock” and ran until 1988.

Until now, “Rock” has retained its World War II setting, with Silver and the studio trying to make a big-budget action adventure movie that was a throwback to flicks like “The Dirty Dozen,” which feature acts of American derring-do.

But a big budget always was an obstacle and, “Inglourious Basterds” notwithstanding, period war movies have not been in vogue in Hollywood for years, unless it was a more serious contemplation of the subject like “Saving Private Ryan.” Also, American jingoism went out of style after 9/11; even this summer’s G.I. Joe movie dropped the toy’s “A Real American Hero” tagline and made the action team internationally focused.

Spiderman-4 Rachel McAdams Or Romola Garai To Play Black Cat?

Spiderman-4 Rachel McAdams Or Romola Garai To Be Black Cat?

The Rumors are starting to go around.

We can exclusively reveal that actress Rachel McAdams has met with the producers of the film for a major role. McAdams (of 'Wedding Crashers' and 'Sherlock Holmes' fame) is said to be a top contender for the role of Felicia Hardy, known to comic fans as The Black Cat.

Fans recall that when Spidey first encounters the Black Cat, she's a cat burglar looking to free her ailing father from prison. She becomes smitten with the web-slinger, to the point of a stalker-level obsession. Later stories had Peter reciprocating her affection and her becoming a lover, a friend and ally (the perfect thing to allow Sony to create a Spidey spin-off).

Not only that, but Romola Garai has auditioned for the role. Garai is a 27-year-old British actress who starred in Amazing Grace, The Other Man and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights.

In the latest issue of The Observer, Garai shared the details about what she was up to last week, which included a video audition for the latest Spidey:

Love is at the root of everything good that has ever happened and will happen.” This phrase swam into focus as I moved up the escalator at Oxford Circus tube on Tuesday morning on my way to put myself “on tape” for a part in Spider-Man 4. This is the acting equivalent of the London Marathon in that it’s important to try your best as long as you understand that you aren’t going to win.

Steven Tyler Has Quit Aerosmith

Steven Tyler has quit Aerosmith

It comes just months after the singer spoke out publicly to dismiss reports the band was on the verge of splitting following a year of cancelled tour dates, injuries and accidents.
In August (09), Tyler broke his shoulder after falling off stage while performing in South Dakota, and the group was forced to scrap the remainder of its summer tour.

Perry admitted that following the accident he and Tyler didn't speak for more than a month, prompting rumours the band's future was in jeopardy.

And it seems fans' fears were justified - guitarist Perry has revealed his pal has left the rock group after its performance as part of the Formula One racing season's final weekend in Abu Dhabi last weekend.

He tells the Las Vegas Sun, "Steven quit as far as I can tell. I don't know any more than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don't know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don't know."

Perry claims the discord in the band is down to Tyler's lack of communication, including his failure to return phone calls: "He's notorious for that. That's one thing I've learned to live with. I try to overlook it. I like to pick my battles.

"Frankly, the last few months I've been wanting not to rock the boat. I don't want him cancelling any more gigs. We really wanted to do these last four. We just kind of didn't want to call him out or anything and get him anymore p**sed off, for whatever reason. So we just let things lie. So we did the gigs and, like I said, I got off the plane and saw this online. That's how I know about it... He has had no contact with me or the other band members."
But Perry is determined to continue with Aerosmith, even if Tyler refuses to return.

He adds, "Right now I'm adjusting to how we're going to go on. Aerosmith is such a powerful band, I mean it's like a steam locomotive. You just can't disregard 40 years of four guys who play together as well as they do. We're just trying to - at least I am - trying to figure out what direction the band should take.

"As far as replacing Steve, it's not just about that, it's also four guys that play extremely well together, and I'm not going to see that go to waste. I really don't know what path it's going to take at this point, but we'll probably find somebody else that will sing in those spots where we need a singer and then we'll be able to move the Aerosmith up a notch, move the vibe up a notch."

'Glee' Helps Struggling Music Industry

'Glee' Helps Struggling Music Industry

Its characters may feel like a bunch of unloved high-school misfits, but the quirky musical TV comedy "Glee" is putting smiles on the faces of music industry executives searching for new revenue in an era of plunging album sales.

Two months into the 2009-10 TV season, "Glee" is drawing a weekly audience of 8.6 million viewers to the Fox television network. Fans have bought more than two million tunes sung by the show's cast on iTunes, and soundtracks are being compiled and sold in traditional stores.

Revenues are being split among Fox and the record company, and artists and music publishers are being paid licensing fees for songs "Glee" uses in musical numbers in each episode.

"Record labels have been desperate for new revenue," said Steve Knopper, contributing editor for Rolling Stone magazine. "They are trying to figure out any way to make money and one pretty reliable way is to sync up with a hot TV show."

That's exactly what Sony Music Entertainment's Columbia Records did last January when the Fox network shopped a pilot of "Glee" to record labels months before it aired.

Columbia won the deal to partner with News Corp's Fox on the release of all "Glee" music on Apple Corp's iTunes, as well as on traditional soundtrack albums.

Columbia also has broad "360" deals -- all-encompassing agreements -- with the previously unknown actors playing the "Glee" kids. The deals cover first rights to recording contracts, and a percentage of earnings from concert revenue, endorsements, merchandising and ringtones.

The first "Glee" soundtrack was released last week, a second is due out on Dec. 8, and discussions are underway for a national cast tour and several more albums.

Digital downloads are released each week of "Glee" cover versions before the show is broadcast, allowing Columbia to capitalize on the appetite of fans to buy immediately.

In a sign of just how popular some of the tunes have become, the "Glee" cast's rendition of the 1981 Journey song "Don't Stop Believin'" was certified gold last week after more than 500,000 digital sales.

Rihanna's "Take a Bow" single saw a 189 pct sales increase after it was covered on "Glee". Now Madonna, eager to get in on the act, has offered her catalog for an upcoming episode.

Knopper said industry economics are such that the revenue from TV partnerships "is pretty much a drop in the bucket" in the multi-billion dollar record business.

Still, the music industry has fallen on hard times. Album sales are off 40% over the last 10 years, and in 2009 U.S. revenue is down 13% at $287.6 million.

"TV has basically become the new radio. It is about exposure and making an impression," Richardson said.

Winona Ryder To Star In "Black Swan"

Winona Ryder Is Going To The Ballet.

"Swan" centers on a young dancer at the New York City Ballet (Portman) who may or may not be having delusions about a rival dancer (Kunis). The project, which began life at Universal before being reconceived as an indie, has drawn comparisons to "The Others" and other high-end supernatural thrillers.

The specialty division is close to climbing aboard Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan," in final negotiations on an agreement to co-finance and distribute the supernatural thriller set in the world of New York ballet.

The pic, which stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, has also rounded out its cast. Winona Ryder has signed on to play an older dancer to Portman's and Kunis' younger performers, while Barbara Hershey and French actor Vincent Cassel are also joining the cast.

Shooting is scheduled to start in New York before the end of the year, with a budget estimated to be $10 million-$12 million. Searchlight had long been eyeing the pic but had not committed to finance or acquire rights until just recently.

Scott Franklin of Aronofsky's Protozoa Pictures will also produce, along with Arnold Messer and Mike Medavoy of Phoenix Pictures. The script was written by Protozoa's Mark Heyman based on an original screenplay by Andres Heinz.

Jake Gyllenhaal To Star In "Source Code"

Jake Gyllenhaal To Star In "Source Code"

Jake Gyllenhaal is in negotiations to star in sci-fi thriller "Source Code" for Vendome Pictures and the Mark Gordon Co.

"Source Code" centers on a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and is forced to live and relive a harrowing train bombing until he can determine who is responsible for it.

Project had originally been set up at Universal in early 2007 when the studio bought Ben Ripley's screenplay and attached Topher Grace to star. Universal tapped Shane Abbess to helm last year. Current script includes revises by Billy Ray ("State of Play").

"Source Code" will launch the Vendome slate, according to Rousselet, who said the project exemplifies the types of producers and filmmakers with whom Vendome plans to work. He and co-CEO Fabrice Gianfermi plan to produce a minimum of a dozen films over the next five years.

Avatar Will Cost 500 Million After All Is Said And Done

Avatar Will Cost 500 Million After All Is Said And Done

When James Cameron makes a movie he goes big. "Titanic" is a great example. But he definitely makes his money back in the end and then some.

Mr. Cameron’s “Titanic,” which took in more than $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office after its release in 1997, was a major corporate event for the News Corporation, then about a third the size of the current conglomerate, which has roughly $30 billion in annual sales. Less than a year after the release, the News Corporation raised nearly $3 billion in a public offering of shares in its filmed entertainment group, partly on the strength of “Titanic.” (It bought those shares back four years ago.)

Will Avatar do the same? Movies looks great and I am looking forward to seeing the film when it comes out this year.

Can a movie studio make money on a film based on an original and unfamiliar story, with no Hollywood superstars, a vanishing DVD market and a price tag approaching $500 million?

That question looms large for 20th Century Fox and its 3-D science-fiction film “Avatar,” among the most expensive movies ever. Despite many skeptics, the studio thinks it can turn a profit, in part because the film’s creator, James Cameron, was the driving force behind the studio’s immense hit “Titanic.”

But just in case box-office receipts for “Avatar” fall short, Fox has worked hard to hedge its large bet on the movie.

Despite the estimated half-billion dollars spent on its production and marketing, “Avatar” may carry surprisingly little financial risk for Fox’s parent company, the News Corporation, even if it disappoints. That is because of shifting industry economics, reliance on outside investors and help from a network of allied companies and in-house business units.

The final cost of the film has not been tallied, as Mr. Cameron, who has worked on the film for 15 years, and his collaborators, as far-flung as Weta Digital in New Zealand, continue to complete their work. Published reports have put the production budget at more than $230 million.

But the price tag would be higher if the financial contribution of Mr. Cameron and others were included. When global marketing expenses are added, “Avatar” may cost its various backers $500 million.

Tom Rothman and Jim Gianopulos, the co-chairmen of Fox Filmed Entertainment, declined through a spokesman to be interviewed. Jon Landau, Mr. Cameron’s partner in their Lightstorm Entertainment production company, also declined to be interviewed.

But “Avatar” did get a mention in a conference call on Wednesday during which Rupert Murdoch, the News Corporation’s chairman, discussed a surprise 11 percent earnings jump in the company’s fiscal first quarter, which ended Sept. 30.

“I’m confident we will lead the Christmas season,” Mr. Murdoch said. He added that he was “excited and moved” by “Avatar.”

At what point the various partners in “Avatar” would see profit from the film depends on what share of revenue each receives as the movie reaches theaters, then home video and other media around the world. If domestic ticket sales reach $250 million — a level broken in the last year by five films, including “Star Trek” and “The Hangover” — Fox and its allies would appear to be headed into the black.

With “Titanic,” the News Corporation was at risk for at least half of a production budget that would approach $300 million in today’s dollars, and was borne partly by Paramount Pictures.

The News Corporation is carrying a much smaller share of “Avatar’s” production cost, as a pair of private equity partners — Dune Entertainment and Ingenious Media — pick up 60 percent of the budget, according to people who were briefed on the economics of the film but spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid conflict with the studio or filmmakers.

In a further hedge, Mr. Cameron would give up part of his own participation in the film’s returns if production costs exceed a specified level, according to those who were briefed on the film. If final production costs exceeded $300 million, for instance, Mr. Cameron would effectively defer much of his payout until the studio and others were compensated, despite his years of labor on the movie.

Mr. Cameron, along with Vince Pace, a Hollywood technology master, also developed much of the elaborate camera system and digital technology for the film themselves, at cost of about $14 million. According to Mr. Pace, the systems are owned by a company that expects to recoup the investment by selling to other filmmakers with help from the Creative Artists Agency.

Fox’s biggest investment in “Avatar” may be on the marketing side, where the company is planning to spend about $150 million around the world — a number that is somewhat lower than might be expected, because of recession-induced concessions on advertising prices and reliance on in-house resources. The News Corporation recently showed a new trailer for the film on Fox’s “NFL Sunday” pregame show, and has been using MySpace to build awareness of the movie.

But here, too, the studio has looked for partners to bear some of the load. One ally, Imax, worked with theater owners to set up a special 15-minute preview last summer without significant cost to the studio. “A lot of people are lending this sort of in-kind support,” said Greg Foster, chairman and president of Imax Filmed Entertainment.
