Paddington Sequel in the Works

We share the latest details about a potential followup. Story by Matt Cummings When the Weinstein Company decided to delay the US release of Paddington from December 2014 to January 2015, someone must have been thinking the same thing we were in our December Movie Preview : too many releases would crowd out potential dollars for Paddington. Luckily, the decision seemed to pay off, as the Paul King movie made $57m domestically and over $150m worldwide. We too at SJF loved this movie , making it one of the highest-ranking of the new year. With markets like Japan and China having yet to experience the polite bear from Darkest Peru, the movie's primary backer Studio Canal has decided there's enough interest to move ahead with a sequel. According to Variety, the company has reached out to Producer David Heyman with the intention of pursuing a follow-up. Here's a quote from Studio Canal's Chairman-CEO Oliver Courson: “We have to be selective, work with stro

Our Most Anticipated Movies Of 2015

Learn which films have us excited for 2015. Story by Matt Cummings Last year at the box office was an odd one to be sure - with most people looking ahead to 2015, 2014 seemed like the bastard step-child that the family knows it has to take in, even though they'd rather not. Still, the year did give us several very good flicks, most of which made it into our 2014 Most Anticipated List . Like every year, big-budget franchise sequels and tentpoles dominated the landscape like Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as well as The LEGO Movie. But now it's time to move into the big one, the year that should demolish every previous box office record, with a collection of films that honestly is the best we've seen in awhile. As always, our list runs the gamut, from risky comic book projects to interesting adaptions, reboots, and conclusions. Your friends at SJF have compiled our top 20 (or so) most anticipated, which means we'

Paddington Review: A Sheer Delight

Paddington is a sheer delight, wrapped in marmalade and adorable furry bear hugs. Review by Matt Cummings American audiences have witnessed so many fantastic incarnations of Winnie the Pooh over the years that it might be hard to welcome a relative unknown to the game. Luckily, Paddington has arrived with enough warm hugs and simple values to make a strong case for its consideration. When a young bear travels from the forests of Darkest Peru to be adopted, Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) soon learns that the London he knows from the 1940's is no longer there. Stuck in a train station with the tag 'Please look after this bear. Thank you.' around his neck, he soon finds a temporary home courtesy of Mary (Sally Hawkins) and Henry (Hugh Bonneville) Brown, who promise to help him locate the famous explorer who saved his Aunt and Uncle from taxidermy many years ago. Unfortunately, dark forces are plotting his demise, including the museum taxidermist Millicen

January 2015 Movies On Our Radar

Is January the month where films go to die? You decide in our January preview! Story by Matt Cummings After an incredibly busy month of December that saw no less than 12 interesting flicks go for our hard-earned dollars , January arrives with a distinctly "Don't forget about us!" feel. January has usually been the month where films go to die, cast off to the Island of Misfit Toys after entertaining earlier Oct-Dec releases. The reality: most of these will flop, some will linger around like Jay and Silent Bob, while others will make a profit and actually lead in the box office until around March. This year might be a different story, with one of the most anticipated slate of films in recent memory. For now. we're holding to our theory but for now there are a few that could be interesting. Our list includes a talking bear, a computer hacker, a sniper, and the end of Bryan Mills. Welcome to our January 2015 movie preview! January 6 Taken 3 Plot
