Soundtrack Review: #10CloverfieldLane

10 Cloverfield Lane boldly digs its alien thriller claws into us and won't let go.

Review by Matt Cummings

If you've seen 10 Cloverfield Lane - and we hope this review will help to convince you - it might already be clear why the thing is such a hit. Central to its success is the score by Battlestar Galactica Composer Bear McCreary, who creates a fabulously haunting and creepy experience that's as every bit as good as the movie.

Having just left her boyfriend (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) finds her life is once again in pieces as she pumps gas at a lonely station. Soon, her life takes an unexpected turn, as she's hit by another car, sending hers tumbling off the road. She awakens to a busted up knee and chained to the wall in an undisclosed location, courtesy of her captor Howard (John Goodman). He informs Michelle that an attack has occurred above his bunker, and that his kindness is the only reason why she's still alive. Soon, Michelle learns that Howard has another guest: the genial Emmett (John Gallagher, Jr), whose blind appreciation of Howard's idiosyncrasies actually cover up for something more sinister lurking inside their benefactor. As the three settle down for a long stay-cation in the airtight bunker, Michelle begins to worry that Howard's violent tendencies aren't the only secret he's keeping about the outside world. She must battle a twisting road of reveals and decide whether her future includes living in such a repressive situation.

Producer J.J. Abrams made everyone do a double-take when the trailer was released just weeks ago, essentially hiding the project under a false name. The same goes for McCreary's score, which digs deeply into its best parts, weaving a haunting theme with exciting orchestral movements and unique sound effects. From its first track Michelle, we understand the creepiness and double-guessing that will soon face our lead as she tries desperately to decide whether her captor Howard's world is to be believed That sort of paranoia sinks deeply into Cloverfield, permeating through a goodly collection of tracks. Among my favorite is Hazmat Suit, a tension-filled electronic opening that moves deftly into a pulsing string pursuit. And as mentioned, McCreary injects Hazmat a tiny trace of the theme. It's one of several bigger tracks - along with Valencia - that I will be adding into my playlist.

There's also a few setup pieces like A Happy Family and sprinkled in for good measure, but many of these employ the same care before moving back into the bigger musical pieces. I also really liked Up Above, not because it's such a good thriller, but because it's so different than the rest of McCreary's offerings. It's got this beautifully happy opening, before descending back into darkness and employing a fabulous collection of sound effects which rip the track apart. Then, it moves back into its happy place. I love such shifts in music, because you can never tell where the sound will ultimately go. It was a joy I experienced with both score and movie.

In the end, 10 Cloverfield Lane: Music from the Motion Picture adds to the melancholy and wholy uncomfortable world which made the film such a surprise. But I will admit that it's an experience best enjoyed by those who can appreciate what McCreary is trying to do here. He's not out to make a big splash, just confuse the world we've entered with pulsing tones, imagined good times, and eventually a dark and powerful reveal at film's end. Seen through those lenses, it becomes easy to understand why this one is a surefire winner. 10 Cloverfield Lane is now available everywhere.

#InsidetheBucket Podcast #89

This week's episode of Inside the Bucket is online! Revel in the digital mastery!

On this better-late-than-never edition of Inside the Bucket, Matt and Rama from RamaScreen.com gather late in the week to give you all this week's movie and television news and reviews from our website SANDWICHJOHNFILMS.COM. Already dripping with SJF ballsy grease, the boys endeavor to discuss several items of supposed importance.

This week, they turn their attention to news from DC, Star Wars, and of course Marvel, as they discuss JK Simmons becoming Commissioner Gordon and Chewbacca joining Han Solo in his upcoming origin story. The two give their reaction to the newest Civil War trailer, discussing the possible future of several characters along the way. Then it's on to this week's box office report, as Zootopia enjoys a second week at #1, while 10 Cloverfield Lane turns in very nice numbers. The boys also discuss movies and television shows hitting Blu-ray this week.

After the requisite pee and headphone break (because our ears get sweaty), it's on to Rants and Raves, where the boys bitch and gripe about all the things they've been watching a reading about this week. See our show notes to see what's bothering Rama and Matt this week.

The show ends with a review of 10 Cloverfield Lane.

We encourage you to participate in mailbag, as well as our Open Forum Friday, which is your chance to get in our business about running a passion project like our trainwreck. Please email us at Comments@SandwichJohnFilms.com with any thoughts you have about our show.

Be warned: Inside the Bucket is an EXPLICIT PODCAST. We tend to say controversial things and cuss just for the heck of it. So, please be careful if you are listening to us while at work.

We hope you laugh as much as we do bringing the show to you. As always, thanks to everyone for your continued support, and we'll see you at one of our screenings.

TV Review: #DaredevilSeason2 Badass To The Bone!

Badass to the bone!

RAMA is back with another review.

Please keep in mind that the following review of Daredevil season 2 is based solely on my having watched the first few episodes, I haven’t seen this new season in its entirety, yet but I’m stoked enough to at least start sharing you my thoughts about it. Just like you, I too was a huge fan of season 1, and my goodness if you think Vincent D’Onofrio’s villainous character, Wilson Fisk, was brutal and merciless, wait till you get a load of everyone’s favorite anti-hero, Frank Castle/Punisher, played by “The Walking Dead” alum, Jon Bernthal

In season 1, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) was having a rough start, getting used to this whole vigilante, it was a trial-and-error work-in-progress learning along the way type of work. And now, in season 2, just when Matt thinks he’s getting used to bringing order back to the city, fact of the matter is Wilson Fisk’s absence creates vacuum, every gang in town is fighting to fill the void. But what appears to be a gang war is actually just the act of one violent man, driven by vengeance. They call him The Punisher and he has no problem with murdering bad guys, a sentiment not shared by Matt Murdock/Daredevil, so there lies the clash between these two characters who have significantly different methods of cleaning up the streets. At the same time, Murdock faces an old flame, Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung) who also has her own brand of justice. The plate is full for Murdock who also has to balance his life as a lawyer while his partner constantly worries for Matt’s safety, that one day this whole vigilante business may finally cost him his own life.

Season 2 ups the ante in terms of its fight sequences, this one has a similar one take-esque fight scene, but instead of hallway, it’s along the staircase, you see the camera following Daredevil as he punches his way down the staircase going through a sea of angry bikers. It was a marvelous sequence, at the end of it, you kinda feel just as exhausted as Daredevil is, because that alone takes a lot out of him. And may I just say that Jon Bernthal is absolutely perfect as Frank Castle/Punisher, my favorite will always of course be Thomas Jane, but what Jon brings to the table in this season is unrestricted brute. This series, despite it being a superhero show, has always been one that pushes the envelope and with Punisher in the equation, you see how much further it can push. Bernthal’s approach for Punisher is highly driven, well-equipped, ridiculously skilled, he’s basically a walking military grade macho.

In season 2, Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) gets more and more worried for his friend, Matt, even as Nurse Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) explains to Foggy that this is the life Matt has chosen and in a disturbing way the city does need Daredevil. But that puts a strain or friction in Charlie - Foggy’s friendship. There’s a bit of distrust growing between Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Charlie and Foggy as well, as Karen is still haunted by her sin and is taking on a secret agenda of her own. It is hard to work with someone who’s not willing to share much with you, at this point I’m just surprised how Matt Murdock has the energy to work in the daytime after a night full of punching people and getting beat up, he must drink some crazy red bull or some super caffeinated coffee.

In theaters, we have Batman V Superman, and Team Iron Man V Team Captain America, here we have Daredevil V Punisher. There’s a great line that Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle/Punisher says in this film that Daredevil is just one bad day away from becoming just like him, the Punisher says that the difference right now is that when he beats bad guys, they stay down, they don’t come back. And so we the audience will feel conflicted because part of us may be against Punisher’s method but then again if you think about it, Daredevil is also taking matters into his own hand, because if he had left it to justice, that means he would’ve let the cops do the job of taking down bad guys. So Daredevil is no saint either, even though he doesn’t kill. Daredevil is like the Batman of Hell’s kitchen, and we can choose to either be like Commissioner Gordon, meaning turn a blind eye and let Daredevil do his thing or we can be like Harvey Dent and say no to vigilantes and his copycats. We the audience get to be the jury and decide, that’s one of the many reasons why DAREDEVIL season 2 is both intriguing and addictive.

Confirmed: Finn Jones Is Marvel’s IRON FIST

Finn Jones, who is best known for his role as Ser Loras Tyrell in HBO’s hit drama Game of Thrones, is set to play titular role in Marvel’s IRON FIST for Netflix, Marvel officially confirmed Thursday.

Jones will star as Daniel “Danny” Rand, a handsome, sophisticated and independent loner who returns to New York City after being missing for years to fight against the criminal element corrupting the city with his incredible kung-fu mastery and the ability to summon the power of the fiery Iron Fist.

The series is being executive produced by Netflix’s Allie Goss, Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Stan Lee, and Scott Buck, who will serve as showrunner.

The series marks the fourth collaboration between Marvel and Netflix, following Daredevil, last fall’s Jessica Jones and the upcoming Luke Cage. All four characters will eventually appear together as The Defenders in a crossover miniseries on Netflix. The news comes just weeks ahead of Daredevil season two’s release on March 18th.

The Iron Fist character first appeared in Marvel Premiere #15 in 1974, and became known for frequently teaming up with Luke Cage in series such as Power Man and Iron Fist. A notable storyline in the Iron Fist comics featured Danny Rand disguising himself as Daredevil in an attempt to convince the media and the public that Matt Murdock was not the masked vigilante, but not without significant consequences. There’s been no word yet on whether these story elements will be incorporated into the forthcoming series.

Movie Review: 'The Divergent Series: Allegiant'

The boring The Divergent Series: Allegiant does little to hedge our concerns about YA's future.

Review by Matt Cummings

WARNING: Spoilers ahead

Over the past few years, we've witnessed a stunning amount of excellent dystopian dramas. Ready to break new ground by returning us to the familiar social territory of Star Trek: The Original Series, humans have struggled in various universes as they seek both the reason for their loss and their place in what's left. Sadly, The Divergent Series: Allegiant still hasn't figured out its formula for success, staggering on and on with a mix of terrible CGI, poor performances, and a script that's decaying as fast as their dystopian Chicago.

As the faction-less masses of Chicago gather after the death of their overlord, Tris (Shailene Woodley) and her lover Four (Theo James) realize one leader's oppression has been replaced by another: Four's mother Evelyn (Naomi Watts). While the couple and many others have decided to flee the city, Evelyn won't allow it (for reasons never explained). Instead, she's on the hunt to purify Chicago of Jeanine's thugs by executing them in kangaroo trials. After a daring escape that sees Four rescue Tris's brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort) from certain death, the team eventually meet The Bureau of Genetic Welfare, where they learn that Chicago has been a giant lab experiment under the city's watchful eye. Ready to start a new life, Four, Caleb, and Peter (the unnecessary Miles Teller) struggle to seek new identities, while Tris learns that her perfect genetic material can save her battered city. As the real work behind Bureau chief David's (Jeff Daniels) operations becomes clear, Team Tris must decide whether to save their city or forget the past and make due in the comfort of their new and advanced surroundings.

Allegiant does an excellent job of proving that the YA genre is on life support, a small fish in a diminishing pond that no one cares about. Sure, there's a lot in the film that could have been interesting - messages about genetic testing, the breakdown of authority that comes after a coup - but Allegiant couldn't care less about anything that interesting. It's squarely focused on Tris and Four and all the boobs who congregate around them and disappear into a background that punishes for substance and rewards for style. It's one of the most frustrating aspects of this experience, with James still a dull slab of man, Teller as a Vegas show act, and Elgort confined to a chair (literally) for most of the film.

Director Robert Schwentke is painting by the numbers here, never pushing his troupe to new levels and saddled with a numbing script by Noah Oppenheim and Adam Cooper. Not one character experiences significant growth, is ever placed in any real danger, or seems even interested in exploring the world beyond voyeur and performer. Tucked within here is a festering amount of nonsensical plots (escape, only to return among them) that does nothing to separate it from The Hunger Games or The Maze Runner. Overall, the running plot element here - that Tris' DNA holds the secret to repairing everyone else's 'broken' makeup - fails to explain why it's important to fix them in the first place. Daniels does nothing to help: is he a mad scientist ready to destroy the petri dish that is Chicago, or a douchey scientist hoping to get his funding renewed? The answer sadly is both. He is the worst-imagined 'baddie' of this franchise whose intentions against Team Tris is apparent from the get go.

The action in Allegiant is straight-up Agents of SHIELD, as everyone other than James seems to utilize a body double, leaping into their finished positions after all the baddies have been taken out. But at its heart, Allegiant is just a reshuffling of the dystopian Mad Max: Fury Road and Oblivion, the action in The Matrix and Dredd and the music of Tron: Legacy. In the right hands, that could have been an interesting mix; cobbled together with its passive message about genetic manipulation and better effects, we could have witnessed a disturbing fish-out-of-water scenario.

Instead, we're treated to more awful CGI, adding to a growing list of remarkably bad SFX in 2016, with many actors clearly standing on soundstages instead of being supported with realistic sets. It makes all the difference in the world, especially when you consider that several indoor pieces here look great. But after awhile, things get so cheap that you can't help but point out the way it soils scene after scene. This collection of cinematic malaise isn't going to convince any newcomers that YA still has something to say, because nothing we've seen from The Divergent Series tells us that it's ready for the big time. Composer Joseph Trapanese delivers the only remarkable thing here, with a pulsing soundtrack that tips its hat to Daft Punk's now classic score; for the most part it works, if nothing else to keep us marching to the bitter end.

Desiring to be big but taking only small steps along the way, The Divergent Series: Allegiant suffers from a cheap paint job, thin character development, and a sense that next year's Ascendant can't come soon enough so these terrific talents can move on to better things. It's truly awful.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant is rated Rated PG-13 for intense violence and action, thematic elements, and some partial nudity and has a runtime of 121 minutes.

Heat Prequel Novel On It's Way

According to Deadline Writer-director Michael Mann, long one of the most literate translators of words to the screen, has made a deal to launch Michael Mann Books. The imprint will generate a series of novels with a stable of writers and the properties will simultaneously be developed for film and television. Mann will look through his own long list of credits for ideas, and a big piece of news here is that high on the priority list is a prequel novel dealing with the principal characters of Heat, Mann’s seminal crime thriller. The prequel novel will cover the formative years of homicide detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro), Chris Shihirles (Val Kilmer), McCauley’s accomplice Nate (Jon Voight), and other characters so brilliantly layered in the 1995 film. Mann based that film on stories of a lot of real criminals and cops, and references to past experiences are peppered throughout the picture.

It’s a bit of reverse engineering, since so many of Mann’s film and TV projects have come from literary properties. His overall highlight credits include The Last Of The Mohicans, Manhunter, Collateral, Public Enemies, Ali, The Insider, Miami Vice, Crime Story, Luck and Drug Wars: The Camarena Story, the Emmy-winning miniseries, and Drug Wars: The Cocaine Cartel, the latter an Emmy nominated adaptation of the Elaine Shannon nonfiction book Desperados.

Mann also developed and produced the Martin Scorsese-directed The Aviator, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, based on John Logan’s adaptation of the Charles Higham book Howard Hughes: The Secret Life. That film got 11 Oscar noms and there were seven for The Insider, adapted from Marie Brenner’s Vanity Fair article. His productions have collectively garnered 23 Oscar noms and 55 Emmy noms. Mann continues to work under the hood of Enzo Ferrari, a feature whose script he wrote over a 15-year period, based on a pivotal year in the life of the Italian sports car maker and entrepreneur. I have read several of Mann’s screenplays, and the feeling is comparable to the one I get reading fellow writer-director Quentin Tarantino’s scripts; they are so lyrical and well thought out that you could see them thrive in other media like novels or stage plays. Mann’s are always exhaustively researched.

Cannonball Run Is Going To Get Rebooted

Deadline is reporting Warner Bros has acquired the rights to the Cannonball Run franchise and set Tropic Thunder scribe Etan J. Cohen to write and direct Cannonball. Andre Morgan and Alan Gasmer (Vikings) are producing.

The studio isn’t calling this a remake but rather a relaunch of a film based on the famous “Cannonball sea to shining sea memorial trophy race” that was captured in three Hal Needham-directed films that starred Burt Reynolds, Frank Sinatra, Roger Moore, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr and Dom DeLuise atop a whole ensemble of ’80s stars. They played roles in the re-enactment of an illegal cross-country race where the participants were not above playing dirty tricks on one another.

The new version is being spearheaded by producer Andre Morgan, who has been making movies at Warner Bros since Enter the Dragon in 1973 (that film also was backed by Golden Harvest, which orchestrated the Cannonball Run films). Warner Bros acquired all sequel and remake rights to the franchise from original copyright owners Brock Yates, the Hal Needham Estate and Fortune Star LTD. Albert S. Ruddy and Raymond Chow are the exec producers. The first film was released by Fox in 1981; Warner Bros released the 1984 sequel; and Orion released the 1989 third film, which starred John Candy, Donna Dixon, Eugene Levy and Brooke Shields. The original films and the legend of the original races on which they were based have generated international interested; people are still running their own time-lapse races to beat the records established in the original five races.

Blu-ray Review #SistersMovie

Among the many things that men hold an unfair monopoly on over women are comedies about adults who never progressed beyond childhood. Man-child comedies are basically a subgenre unto themselves, spanning from The Jerk to Dumb and Dumber to the bulk of the Judd Apatow-associated films of the past decade. But why can’t women also be overgrown children for our amusement? Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck this past summer at least scratched in the general vicinity of the itch, but didn’t quite get there, as her character was irresponsible in chiefly adult ways. Where the women-children at?

Sisters answers that call with great gusto. The film, starring real-life besties Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, introduces us to the Ellis sisters, Kate and Maura. Maura (Poehler) is a tightly-wound nurse with a deep-seated need to care for and please others. Kate is the opposite, a reckless washout who can hold neither a job nor a residence and whose put-upon daughter (Madison Davenport from From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series) is forced to occupy the mother role in their relationship. Kate and Maura might have wildly divergent temperaments and stations in life, but what they do share is an infantilized mindset. The sisters are only adults by the numbers, and when their long-suffering parents (James Brolin and Dianne Wiest) opt to sell the girls’ childhood home in Orlando in favor of downscaled condo life, the sisters band together to put a stop to this nonsense. Losing their childhood home means closing the book on their childhood, and the Ellis sisters clearly aren’t ready for that book to shut.

Somehow the plan to save the house quickly mutates into a plan to have one last big blowout at the place, inviting all their old high-school friends over to recapture the good ol’ days, with the added bonus of making a mess that will put off the house’s upper-crust prospective buyers. The guest list includes a local handyman (Ike Barinholtz) who has captured Maura’s fancy, a brutally unfunny would-be cutup (SNL’s Bobby Moynihan) blissfully unaware of how painful his non-stop pop-culture references are, and a hulking mountain of a drug dealer (John Cena) who exhibits painstaking professionalism in his trade. Not on the guest list, however, is Brinda (Maya Rudolph), an ice-queen nemesis of the Ellises who becomes determined to either ruin or infiltrate the bash.

Sisters has a loose setup, but once the party commences, the movie gathers momentum that never flags. The great initial gag is that Kate and Maura’s old pals are now boring fortysomething suburbanite parents whose idea of partying consists of glasses of wine and mundane conversation, hardly the bacchanal the girls had in mind. But the sisters do manage to kickstart the youthful spirits lying dormant beneath the middle-class calcification of their classmates, procuring both the burn-it-down revelry and property damage they set out to achieve. The end result is a night that sparks both the teenage dreams and the belated adult impulses of the sisters as the home base of their adolescence is celebrated and destroyed in equal measure.

The film that Sisters perhaps most strongly recalls is Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion, a similar tale of adult women who never really moved past their high-school selves and who find themselves in a situation where they are forced to confront former schoolmates who have. There are also fragments of House Party, Superbad and Risky Business (that last one, the movie outright cops to over its end credits) to be found. Yet Sisters is much better than merely an amalgamation of spare parts from other comedies. This is the funniest film of the year, and one of the most raucous and energetic comedies in several years. The film doesn’t have much in the way of structure. Once the party starts, it takes over the entire film like a wildfire. Party comedies can be tiresome and obnoxious, as was the case with Project X a few years back, but the pleasure of Sisters is how many different scenarios and jokes it manages to glean from a very familiar framework. It often comes off like the most sharply written lowbrow ‘80s comedy ever made, in the best way.

Poehler is right in her sweet spot here, playing a Type-A overachiever whose brain and mouth rarely seem in sync. This character is very much of a piece with Parks and Recreation’s Leslie Knope without being a complete facsimile, and Poehler gets huge laughs all throughout. Fey, however, is a revelation. Playing a blowsy, uninhibited party girl is a persona she hasn’t really tried on before and it fits her perfectly. It goes without saying that the two actresses have astonishing chemistry and are hilarious ping-ponging off of one another, but Fey as the naughty yin to Poehler’s uptight yang gives their partnership an entirely fresh slant. They are ably abetted by a network of scene stealers, especially Moynihan, who turns in a live-wire performance, and Cena, who, along with his contributions to Trainwreck, is quickly establishing himself as the unlikeliest comedic secret weapon.

So fantastic is Sisters that it even manages to spin a potentially deadly, drawn-out gag of someone getting an object painfully stuck where the sun don’t shine into solid laughs. While perhaps a bit overlong at just shy of two hours, as is the unfortunate trend with comedies this day and age, the film never feels like it overstays its welcome by that much. In fact, it’s almost a shame that the party has to end. I could have hung out a bit longer.
