Kevin Williamson Out Of Scream 4

Kevin Williamson Out Of Scream 4

All is not well in Woodsboro. As we previously reported, significant script changes have created some tension on the set of "Scream 4."

Lauren Graham's role was so reduced that she dropped out of the project, and now it appears that Hayden Panetierre's part has changed as well... and who's at fault may surprise you.

We have learned that the slasher flick's script is now in the hands of Ehren Kruger, not the creator of the franchise, Kevin Williamson.

In fact, word is that Williamson's involvement with the project has come to an end entirely -- meaning "Scream 5" is a no-go at this time.

Kruger's writing resume includes "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "The Ring," and more significantly, "Scream 3." While the first two "Scream" movies, penned by Williamson, were adored by fans and critics alike, "Scream 3" was... well, not.

Hayden Panettiere's role, which one source says "used to be really sharp" has now been "dumbed down significantly." The actress is "beyond frustrated with the changes." Another source says that Lake Bell, who had to drop out of "Scream 4" due to scheduling changes, "dodged a bullet."

To make up for the actors that have dropped out of the production, Alison Brie, Marley Shelton, Erik Knudson, and Adam Brody have all signed on recently.

Judd Apatow To Produce A Pee-Wee Herman Film

Judd Apatow To Produce A Pee-Wee Herman Film

Judd Apatow is developing an untitled Pee-wee Herman feature for Universal that Paul Reubens is writing with thesp-scribe Paul Rust ("Inglourious Basterds," "I Love You, Beth Cooper"). Apatow will produce through his Apatow Prods. banner, though he will not helm the project. Pic is described as featuring the iconic geek -- known for his love of toys and nerdy catchphrases like "I know you are, but what am I?" -- in a road pic built around "a gigantic adventure."

"Let's face it, the world needs more Pee-wee Herman,"  "I am so excited to be working with Paul Reubens -- who is an extraordinary and ground-breaking actor and writer. It's so great to watch him return with such relevance."

The partnership came about after Apatow saw Reubens' recent "Pee-wee Herman Show" revival at the Nokia Theater, where it played to packed houses in January and February. The show is bound for a 10-week stint on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theater starting Oct. 26.

Reubens said he was incredibly gratified by Apatow's interest in collaborating on a pic.

"There is no one like Judd in our business -- he loves comedy with emotion and heart, and he sees what we do as art," Reubens said. "I can't believe I'm getting this opportunity to be working with him."

During the past year, Reubens has successfully resurrected the character he first introduced in L.A.'s theater and club scene in the late 1970s and early '80s, when he was a member of the Groundlings comedy troupe.

After an HBO spesh and numerous appearances as Pee-wee Herman on "Late Night with David Letterman," Reubens' scored at the B.O. in 1985 with the Warner Bros. pic "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," helmed by Tim Burton in his feature directing debut. The success of the pic led Reubens to land the CBS Saturday morning show "Pee-wee's Playhouse," which ran from 1986-90.

Reubens' career ascent came to a sudden halt in 1991 when he was arrested for indecent exposure in Florida.

Amid the fallout from the incident, Reubens focused on acting gigs outside of his Herman persona. He has said that the Pee-wee revival was spurred by the fact that "Pee-wee's Playhouse" and the 1985 pic remain popular among adults and kids born long after the first wave of Pee-wee Herman.

The ardor for all things Pee-wee was on display last Saturday during the Los Angeles Film Fest screening of "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," which played to a sold-out crowd of all ages at the Orpheum Theater. Reubens spent more than an hour fielding questions and expressions of devotion from squealing fans.

Hostel: Part III Set In Las Vegas

Hostel: Part III Set In Las Vegas

An August shoot is set for Hostel: Part III. As of August 13, 2008, little is known of this film, aside from the fact that it will most likely be a direct-to-DVD release.

Scott Spiegel will be directing from a screenplay by Michael Weiss. The interesting turn is that Hostel: Part III will head to Vegas where a bachelor party goes horribly wrong. Could the groom have a price on his head?

It was announced that Eli Roth would not be directing Hostel III. Eli went on his Twitter account and said this:

Rumor Control: not producing Hostel 3, but it’s in the VERY capable hands of director Scott Spiegel & producers Mike Fleiss & Chris Briggs. There was a huge demand to continue the series and they are the right team to do it. They’re very smart, creative, and really get it.

Stage 6 is the direct to dvd division of Sony Home Entertainment, is responsible for such home video releases as The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day.

Multiple Man To Appear In X-Men: First Class

Multiple Man To Appear In X-Men: First Class

They are adding multiple characters to the upcoming X-Men: First Class film. And when I say multiple I mean  Jaime Maddrox, known to most fans as Multiple Man. Considering that this is the same source which clued me in to Benjamin Walker's potential casting as the mutant student Henry McCoy (Beast) several weeks ago, I feel fairly certain this information is viable.

For those of you unfamiliar with the character, here is a brief biography according to Marvel.com: 'Jamie Madrox's mutant ability was apparent at birth when a duplicate was created upon his being slapped by the doctor. Two weeks later, Jamie's father resigned from the Los Alamos Nuclear Research Center and moved his family to an intentionally isolated farm in Kansas at the suggestion of Professor Charles Xavier. From a young age, Madrox was given a special suit to wear that would neutralize his mutant power, but before this could be explained to him a freak tornado killed his parents when he was 15.'

The character has already appeared once on film in X-Men 3: The Last Stand, and was portrayed by Grey's Anatomy actor Eric Dane. So far, at least three young actors have been seriously approached to fill the role.

X-Men: First Class is being directed by Matthew Vaughn. The cast so far includes James McAvoy as Professor Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Benjamin Walker as Henry McCoy and Alice Eve as Emma Frost. The film is slated for theatrical release on June 3rd, 2011.

Sean Penn Hitting The Waves Again

Sean Penn Hitting The Waves Again

Sean Penn, who launched his career nearly three decades ago playing quintessential surfer Jeff Spicoli in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," is in negotiations to tackle surfing icon Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz.

Penn will produce a film based on the eccentric Paskowitz and his family and is eyeing the untitled project as a starring vehicle. Alan and Gabe Polsky, who recently produced the Werner Herzog-helmed "Bad Lieutenant" reboot, are also on board to produce.

The Polskys optioned the life rights to the Paskowitz clan, whose nomadic beach existence was recently the subject of Doug Pray's docu "Surfwise." For the past two decades, producers from Matt Weaver to Graydon Carter have tried unsuccessfully to secure the life rights to the now 89-year-old Paskowitz. The patriarch finally gave his blessing to the Polskys once they were able to attach Penn to the project.

Penn's close friend Paul Feldsher, known for producing such pics as "The Four Feathers" and "Waking Up in Reno," will write the screenplay.

Paskowitz became a cult hero for abandoning a successful medical practice and hitting the road in a camper with his wife and nine children. Family founded the first surf camp in the continental U.S.

It's Official Spider-Man Has Been Cast

It's Official Spider-Man Has Been Cast

Sony Pictures has officially announced that Andrew Garfield has landed the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in director Marc Webb's Untitled Spider-Man Film! The film focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises. The film is set to open on July 3, 2012.

Here's the official press release:

After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Today's confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory. Bloggers, pop culture speculators, and everyday fans have pored over and analyzed every conceivable online rumor in an attempt to discover the identity of the next actor to play Peter Parker. Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role.

The Spider-Man franchise is one of the most successful in film history and the three previous motion pictures have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office.

On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, "Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker."

Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures said, "Spider-Man is a classic superhero -- a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker."

Producer Avi Arad added, "I'm incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future."

Producer Laura Ziskin said, "We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb’s direction. We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men. In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen."

The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming films from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Garfield is fast becoming one of the most respected and sought-after young actors working in the industry today. In a short career, spanning only five years, he has already been directed by, and starred alongside, some of the greatest names and received a BAFTA for a role that won him international praise.

Garfield most recently worked with director David Fincher on the upcoming film The Social Network. He previously starred for Spike Jonze on his robot love story I'm Here, which premiered at Sundance this year. He plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.

Other notable screen credits include Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus playing opposite Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and the late Heath Ledger, Robert Redford’s Lions For Lambs, where he starred alongside Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep; Revolution Films' "Red Riding Trilogy – 1974" directed by Julian Jarrold, where he lead a stellar cast including Rebecca Hall and David Morrissey, and his unforgettable portrayal of a young ex-con in John Crowley's "Boy A," for which he earned the best actor BAFTA in 2008.

Garfield’s career began in theatre and in 2006 his performances in "Beautiful Thing" (Sound Space/Kit Productions), "The Overwhelming," and "Burn / Chatroom / Citizenship" (Royal National Theatre) won him the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard awards and the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards. Other notable theatre credits include "Romeo and Juliet" (Manchester Royal Exchange) and "Kes" (Manchester Royal Exchange), for which he received the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Manchester Evening News Awards 2004.

Spike Lee Has A "Nagasaki Deadline"

Spike Lee Has A "Nagasaki Deadline"

Spike Lee is closing a deal to next direct Nagasaki Deadline, a thriller that will shoot on the East Coast next year. Alcon Entertainment will finance, and partners Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson will produce with Lightstorm Entertainment’s James Cameron, Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini.

The film focuses on a troubled FBI agent and his desperate race to thwart two terrorist attacks planned to unfold on American soil. The fed goes beyond obvious suspects to focus on theories that the crime is tied to historical events, as he races against the clock.

Given the recent Times Square terror scare, this is risky, hot-button stuff. Creatively, it returns Lee to the fast-paced thriller terrain he covered in Inside Man, which I think was Lee's best film in years. While he delivered a solid hit on budget with three stars--Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster and Clive Owen--studios hardly flooded him with followup offers. While Lee should be viewed as one of Gotham's most talented filmmakers, every film he makes is a struggle, and many fall apart. With few exceptions, studios have kept their distance, probably because of his past penchant for speaking his mind, and for the way he leveraged Warner Bros to get his way on Malcolm X. Interestingly, Alcon Entertainment's output arrangement with Warner Bros puts Lee back in business with that studio, something he wasn't sure would ever happen. After publicly campaigning to get Norman Jewison to bow out, Lee shot Malcolm X and then threatened to disown it--which would have killed it with urban audiences--as he battled to get his way over such issues as continuing the film beyond the devastating assassination scene. Lee once told me a great story about how he sat in a screening room in 1992 with Warner Bros chiefs Bob Daly and Terry Semel, who were seeing his Malcolm X cut for the first time. The execs started getting interrupted with notes from frantic-looking assistants. The Los Angeles riots were unfolding nearby. The studio chiefs watched the whole film, but there was little conversation after. They hurried home, and Lee raced to the airport to get out of town. Lee later tried to make the John Ridley-scripted LA Riots at Universal and Imagine. They were unable to agree on budget two years ago, and Universal's move away from adult dramas after numerous failures further dims the film's prospects.

Nagasaki Deadline has had its own back story of its own. Scripted by David and Peter Griffiths, the drama started at Fox, where Cameron makes all his movies. The film got dropped for self-evident reasons after 9/11. Alcon revived the drama, had Cast Away scribe William Broyles rewrite it, and set Martin Campbell to direct.

Reboot: Dirty Harry By Jonathan Cyfer

Reboot: Dirty Harry

We've seen a variety of franchises that have been "rebooted" lately or are soon to be rebooted, from Star Trek to Spider-Man, but there are a number of films that are generally ignored (perhaps a great number) and should be considered for a significant facelift. This isn't to say that every film or TV series that's 30 years old or older should be given new life and there are some idea s that should have never seen the light of day the first time.

For instance, it's been suggested that a remake of the Don Knotts 1964 film The Incredible Mr Limpet be released, but having seen the original, I'd like to see this particular product given a pass. And while I'm sure many of you will enjoy the new Smurfs film out of a sense of nostalgia, the little blue guys (and one girl) really need to stay on the small screen (just look how horribly the very wonderful Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons were translated into film).

Leaving the realm of fantasy and cartoons, there are a number of older films that deserve to be remade. This article is the first of a series of blogs presenting such films. For your consideration, I'll introduce the first movie: Dirty Harry (1971).

For those of you into the tough, hard-boiled cop film genre, Dirty Harry is at least in the top ten list if not number one. While Clint Eastwood generally came to the attention of American film audiences thanks to his role as the nameless drifter in his spaghetti western trilogy of the 1960s, Dirty Harry cemented his career as a star forever. If I were to say the phrase "Go ahead...make my day" (from Dirty Harry sequel Sudden Impact 1983), you would all immediately recall the line as having been spoken by Eastwood's Magnum toting character. The Dirty Harry series of films is firmly seated as an American cultural icon.

I periodically watch Dirty Harry. It's still a wonderful film with a terrific cast. Andrew Robinson as "Scorpio" was just brilliant and John Vernon's supporting role as San Francisco's Mayor was fabulous (yes, it's "Dean Wormer" from Animal House).

But even a great film can show its age. Dirty Harry, like all other creative works, films are products of their time. Harry came out in the early 1970s, very soon after the U.S. instituted the motion picture rating system. I've noticed in a number of films from this period that, once movies could be rated "R", which would allow for some significant nudity and swearing, suddenly films had just a ton of "tits and ass" and "F bomb" drops. While I'm not opposed to the tasteful exposure of the female form for "artistic purposes" or as a necessary plot device, it seems like Harry suffered from a little too much gratuitous breast and brief pubic hair exposure that had little or nothing to do with the actual story telling.

Also, next year will be Dirty Harry's 40th anniversary and seeing Harry’s story told through more modern eyes would provide the opportunity to explore one of our favorite "anti-heroes" against the backdrop of 21st century political correctness. Harry was already pushing the outside of the envelope with his general misanthropic attitudes, including those about people of color, but how would people today consider his use of his 44 magnum in a city that just a few years back tried to ban handguns. Harry used methods that weren't so different from his adversary in order to stop a mass murder and established (within the film's context) that playing by the rules (and the law) wasn't going to stop a madman. What can we say about this in a film made in 2010?

I've even got the perfect actor to play Harry Callahan: Hugh Jackman. Jackman's about the same age that Eastwood was when he first played Harry and I can see him being able to deliver Harry's sardonic lines with the same maliciously playful smirk Eastwood used. I remember seeing a still from Dirty Harry posted on the web (I can't find it now) of the scene after Harry is wounded by Scorpio. He's lying on a couch in his boss's office and for a split instant; I actually thought it was a photo of Jackman instead of Eastwood. In that moment, I thought it would be a great idea to have the film rebooted with Jackman playing the lead.

If anyone out there is reading this and can do anything about it, please do so.

Colin Farrell And Eric Bana To Star In "By Virtue Fall"

Colin Farrell And Eric Bana To Star In "By Virtue Fall"

Colin Farrell and Eric Bana are in early talks to team on By Virtue Fall, an independent drama that will mark the directorial debut of Sheldon Turner, who shared an Oscar scripting nomination with Jason Reitman for Up in the Air. Nicolas Chartier's Voltage Pictures is setting up the financing and producing with Jennifer Klein and Turner.

While both Farrell and Bana sparked to Turner's script and want to do the film, the fragile nature of mounting a two-handed character indie drama makes this one no slamdunk. I've monitored the progress of the talks for the past week, and basically, reps for the actors remain underwhelmed by the money offered so far by Chartier. The feisty Frenchman will have to up the ante if he wants these two. Bana is further along than Farrell.

The drama charts a professional and personal relationship between two characters that evolves from friendship to betrayal and retribution. The Irish and Australian actors make an interesting match for a blood feud.

The Expendables is a hard-hitting action/thriller about a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things aren’t quite as they appear, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. With their mission thwarted and an innocent life in danger, the men struggle with an even tougher challenge – one that threatens to destroy this band of brothers.

Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) is a man with nothing to lose. Fearless and void of emotion, he is the leader, the sage and the strategist of this tight-knit band of men who live on the fringe. His only attachment is to his pickup truck, his seaplane and his team of loyal modern-day warriors. His is a true cynic who describes what he does as “removing those hard to get at stains.” The team behind him is made up of Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), former SAS and a savant with anything that has a blade; Yin Yang (Jet Li), a master at close-quarter combat; Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), who has known Barney for ten years and is a long-barrel weapons specialist; Toll Road (Randy Couture), a skilled demolitions expert and considered the intellect of the group; and Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), a combat veteran and an expert in precision sniping who struggles with his own demons.

When the mysterious Church offers Barney a job no one else would take, Barney and his team embark on what appears to be a routine mission: overthrow General Gaza (David Zayas), the murderous dictator of the small island country of Vilena and end the years of death and destruction inflicted on its people. On a reconnaissance mission to Vilena, Barney and Christmas meet their contact Sandra (Giselle Itie), a local freedom-fighter with a dark secret. They also come to learn who their true enemy is: rogue ex-CIA operative James Monroe (Eric Roberts) and his henchman Paine (Steve Austin). When things go terribly wrong, Barney and Christmas are forced to leave Sandra behind, essentially giving her a death sentence. Haunted by this failure, Barney convinces the team to return to Vilena to rescue the hostage and finish the job he started. And to perhaps save a soul: his own.

The Expendables opens August 13th, 2010

Flash Gordon Film-Will It Ever Happen?

Flash Gordon Film-Will It Ever Happen?

Following the release of "The Crazies" earlier this year, director Breck Eisner's next project could be a remake of John Carpenter's "Escape from New York." However, Eisner recently extended his option for Alex Raymond's classic sci-fi comic strip "Flash Gordon," with an eye towards directing it down the line.

"'Flash Gordon' is a total passion project for me," said Eisner during an interview with Fearnet. "We've just extended the option and the studio's very committed in trying to make it happen."

"It's just a gigantic 3D experience with years of prep," continued Eisner. "It’s one of those movies you get once in a lifetime to make and for me it's been a passion of mine since I was a kid. If I could pick and just control everything I would love to make 'Flash Gordon,' it's really kind of my dream job, but it's multi-year, in terms of writing and designing."

Rango Teaser Trailer Starring Johnny Depp

Rango Teaser Trailer Starring Johnny Depp

Paramount Pictures has released a new teaser trailer for the upcoming CGI animated film from Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. The film is called Rango, and it just seems really weird.

The movie is based on an original idea that Verbinski dreamed up. It tells story follows a chameleon with an identity crisis who goes on an adventure to discover his true self. Johnny Depp provides the voice of the main character Rango.

The movie co-stars Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone, and Timothy Olyphant.

Enjoy the trailer after the jump..

The animation is being done by Industrial Light & Magic, and apparently they are using cutting edge animation techniques to bring these characters to life.Verbinski has said that these new techniques “will allow us to capture and translate every aspect of Johnny’s performance, using it to drive the computer-generated character in a way that has yet to be seen in an animated feature."
