Movie Review: Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

The soulless Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets isn't awful, but misses a golden opportunity to redefine the genre. Review by Matt Cummings Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets has so many obstacles in its path that it's hard to understand . Its name doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Strike one. Its leads are unknown. Strike 2. And there's another similar movie out there called Star Wars . And while it does majestically strike out, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets does so with some style, making it passable entertainment but in no way generating a shift for the genre. Serving 1,000 planets, the sprawling 28th Century space metropolis Alpha is home to the galaxy's knowledge and culture. Helping to defend this world and the others are space/time agents Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne), who are to escort Commander Arün Filitt (Clive Owen) to a meeting of planetary representatives to deliver a dire

Taken Prequel Headed To TV

Luc Besson is revisiting Taken with NBC. The network on Thursday handed out a straight-to-series order for a drama prequel based on the 2008 action thriller written by Besson, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The drama hails from Universal Television and EuropaCorp, which produced the Liam Neeson feature film that helped transform the actor into an action star. There is no writer or showrunner attached to the reboot, though a search is underway. Also undetermined is the number of episodes that the Taken prequel will feature. The original film starred Neeson as Bryan Mills, a retired CIA operative on a mission to save his daughter. NBC's modern-day prequel would focus on how a young Bryan honed his skills and became the character depicted in the feature. The Taken prequel comes as IP — including features and TV series — have been hot commodities across broadcast and cable networks amid an increasingly cluttered original programming landscape. This development season

It's not made for that,” Luc Besson said last summer about the prospect of a sequel to the surprise smash hit " Lucy ." “If I find something good enough, maybe I will, but for now I don't even think about it.” Well, it looks like he's thought about it and something is brewing. At CineEurope 2015, production house EuropaCorp (which Besson heads up) announced their slate of upcoming films, which quietly mentioned that " Lucy 2 " was "in development." DVD Review: Transporter: The Series - The Complete Second Season

Frank Martin’s small-screen exploits still a road to nowhere. Review by Brandon Wolfe Filmmaker Luc Besson, that prolific purveyor of Euro-junk action thrillers, seems hellbent on making a cottage industry out of The Transporter . The original 2002 film, the coming-out party for Jason Statham’s tenure as one of filmdom’s core badasses, was a surprise hit and spawned two sequels, with a reboot-flavored third on the way. Besson also launched The Transporter as a TV series in 2012, to relatively little fanfare. Besson, famously a voracious fan of dollar signs (we didn’t get those nonsensical Taken sequels for the sake of art), clearly works under the impression that there is a wealth of profit potential in this franchise, yet the material at the core of The Transporter empire is so thin that the amount of stretching Besson is attempting to do with it threatens to tear it apart. Case in point, Besson has now completed a second season of Transporter: The Series and the franchise’s
