Hollywood's Positive Month Doesn't Cure The Patient's Long-Term Issues. By: MattInRC

Hollywood's Positive Month Doesn't Cure The Patient's Long-Term Issues.
By: MattInRC

Back in late March, we reviewed the top box office performers year-to-date but also lamented about Hollywood's continued domestic woes. Among the bad news we reported at that time:

  • As of March 30th, the industry (compounded monthly) was down a staggering 63%;
  • Five of the top 10 films were leftover releases from 2012;
  • April was similarly terrible, reflecting a 12% loss from 2012 - at $634,100,000 - with a compounded-monthly loss of 75%;
  • The market hasn't seen such poor performances since 2011.

These bits of data could have created bad omens for the Summer 2013 schedule, which does not have an Avengers, Dark Knight Rises, or Skyfall (all of which made $2 billion domestically) to lead the charge. But, we did have several intriguing releases such as Star Trek: Into Darkness, Fast Six, and Iron Man 3. So, how did the critical month of May fair for Hollywood? Actually, not too bad - in fact, the industry is up almost 2% from May 2012. But that's not all: according to our friends at BoxOfficeMojo.com, the top 10 has also gone through a tremendous change in just two months, as proven by the following:

Again, new trends emerge, especially when you consider the role which Iron Man 3 has played and what other Summer contenders have failed to accomplish. And while the news is good for The Golden Avenger, (which accounts for 4.4% of the top 10 receipts), other releases including Star Trek: Into Darkness have not fared as well as projected. This is particularly troublesome since Darkness received a vigorous marketing campaign and stellar reviews. In fact, 2009's reboot outpaced the sequel over the same 15-day period, demonstrating that its fan boy/girl base is simply not drawing in repeat customers. That's not the case for Fast Six, as its huge mainstream appeal vaulted it into the top 10 in just 7 days and should continue to demonstrate strength throughout June.

The 2% gain from 2012 is good news and hopefully signals a positive trend which is so badly needed during the critical May-Labor Day sweeps. But the challenge is unique, as is the remedy: Hollywood can't suddenly add new product into the market to shore up sagging losses, or jump off the ride by pulling its future releases off the table. Like being caught on a rollercoaster, the industry will simply have to ride out the early ugly trend, and hope that foreign receipts - a growing powerhouse in a market once dominated by the US - will turn the tide.

For now, the news here is cautiously optimistic - we'll see if trend continues through June.

Now You See Me Review. It's Magic That's Full Of Holes

Now You See Me Review
By: MattInRC

Now You See Me is big on showmanship but its tricks are too easy to spot.

Is there a modern film one can think of that doesn't use some sort of CGI? It's almost become as necessary as light tents and a camera to make your film. Gone seem to be the days of Cecil B. DeMille's gargantuan sets, where actors stood in front of thousands giving these scenes a life of their own. CGI was supposed to be the cheaper fix, magically transporting audiences to ancient planets, alien invasions, and enchanted forests, and limited only by the imagination (and budget) of the director and their creative team. But CGI's impenetrable armor has always been filled with cracks, with audiences beleaguered as far back as The Phantom Menace - since then, stiff performances by actors pretending to be frightened or battling a digitized enemy have become more common than it should. For every visual eye feast like Lord of the Rings and Prometheus, there's Jack the Giant Slayer. Unfortunately, the magic-heist film Now You See Me wants CGI to also tell its tale, but the result doesn't match the expectation.

Four small-time magicians - Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher, Wedding Crashers), Jack Wilder (Dave Franco, Warm Bodies), Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network), and Merritt Osbourne (Woody Harrelson, Seven Psychopaths) - are brought together by a mysterious organization known as The Eye to pull off a series of bank heists under the name "The Four Horsemen." Within one year, they are selling out shows in Las Vegas, and their popularity has inspired the generous support of insurance magnate Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine, Dark Knight series). When their first heist leads to the disappearance of millions of French Euros thousands of miles away, the FBI gets involved. Agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo, The Avengers) is summoned to conduct the investigation, but his team is merely a pawn in The Horsemen's big game. The French bank sends Interpol Agent Alma Vargas (Mélanie Laurent, Inglorious Bastards) to assist Rhodes, who thinks this upstart has no place being at his side. Meanwhile, the television magician-debunker personality Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman, Oblivion) appears, hoping to expose The Four Horsemen for ratings sake. As the team of magicians steal from Tressler himself, Vargas and Rhodes learn that The Eye is really a secret society of magicians who are looking to grant the powers of true magic to The Horsemen. As the film leads to the final magic act, the FBI frantically pursue The Four Horsemen, even though they know any chance of catching the renegades is slim.

Director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) has a balancing act of his own to pull off, and for the most part he fails, barely giving his actors time to recite the cheesy dialogue from Writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek: Into Darkness). As you may know, the team responsible for bringing Transformers to the big screen has a penchant for the story twist. In this case, it's a fifth member of The Eye who's working behind the scenes to disrupt the FBI. When that person is finally revealed, the effect is a dud; rather than showing how that person evaded authorities, Leterrier and team present a few cut scenes of that person trailing the Four Horsemen before officially recruiting them. That's not enough, especially when the pursuit begins and the situation can become more fluid. Whether Orci and Kurtzman realize it or not, such cues are necessary to help the audience wrap up the story and enjoy the process of learning about the twist. Our actors, while capable, never have time to investigate their roles, with the exception of Ruffalo and Laurent. This movie seems as much about their relationship - which didn't work for me from the start - as the heists themselves. There's little chemistry between this ensemble cast, which is strange considering the combined 15 Oscar nominations they share. Harrelson is the only standout here, trading a few well-placed comedic quips while trying to convince audiences that he can hypnotize a person with simply a Jedi Mind Trick. Eisenberg and Fisher, whose one-time love affair suddenly grows to a loving climax by the time the leader behind the Eye is exposed - feels totally out of place, making them merely pawns in the organization's big game, and never seem more than good-looking window dressing.

You've heard that See Me is supposedly the next Ocean's Eleven, but it also tries desperately to borrow from Christopher McQuarrie's terrific The Usual Suspects. It never comes close, with the reveal never well-explained (think Keyser Söze), and the 'ah!' moment disappearing into the mist like a well-oiled illusion. Magic-act films in the digital era suffer mightily because any chance of showing real slight-of-hand can get horribly blurred with CGI, which See Me has in copious amounts. From over-stylized building-sized light shows, to a dull sequence in a New Orleans theater, See Me doesn't sell its sizzle very well, relying on CGI to carry that burden instead of its actors and script, both of which seem ill-suited to the task. If Hollywood is in the business of creating believable illusions, then it's more important than ever that films about magic feel organic by balancing those slights-of-hand with stronger character stories.

Now You See Me looks good and sounds great, but like typical Summer films fails to conjure up a great story. With CGI making everything and anything possible these days, the tricks of this film feel strangely uninspired. Skip this one and instead try 2006's The Prestige. For now, Now You See Me is rated PG-13 and has a runtime of 116 minutes.

New Look AutoBots For Transformers 4

One of the biggest movie heroes on six wheels is getting an overhaul for his next appearance on screen.

Michael Bay has released pictures of the new, updated Optimus Prime, the leading big rig in the "Transformers" series, as the vehicle will appear in truck form in the upcoming "Transformers 4." The new machine looks sleeker and more upscale than before, a vehicle any trucker would be proud to take out on the highway.

Which Autobot could this green machine be? It's a special race-inspired C7 Corvette Stingray, based on
Chevrolet's upcoming 2014 production car — and the first look is seen here on the set of "Transformers 4" near the border of Arizona and Utah

Manufactured by Western Star, a division of Daimler Trucks North America, the new Optimus Prime has the traditional dark blue paint job with stylish red flames highlighted by pinstripes, as well as gleaming exhaust stacks that curl up to the sky at an angle from behind the cab, instead of the more functional straight pipes used in the past.

Optimus has a more streamlined look this time compared to his previous screen appearances, with a raked hood, chromed grill, and massive curved front bumper that make the truck look less than a traditional semi and a bit more like an overgrown sports car.

In the past Optimus looked pretty cool — but not that different than the trucks you see on the highway. This time out he's a bit less about function and more about style, which might suggest the character's personality could be getting a makeover in "Transformers 4" as well.

Bumblebee gets a face-lift and a tougher paint job in the form of this 1967 modded-out vintage Chevy Camaro.

Beyond the newer, more tricked out Optimus Prime, Bay and Paramount released photos of two other cars that will appear in "Transformers 4," photographed on locations in the Southwest. One is a blue and black Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse, a very collectable sports model that's one of the fastest production cars on earth, having cracked 408 kilometers per hours on a test track with racer Anthony Liu behind the wheel in April 2013. Also on set is a C7 Corvette Stingray, a racing version of the upcoming 2014 edition of the iconic coupe, looking very cool in a bright green paint job.

A 1,200-horsepower Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse worth more than a whopping $2.4 million.

So far, Bay and Paramount are keeping a lid on what we can expect in "Transformers 4," beyond announcing that Mark Wahlberg will be playing the lead (and a dad) instead of Shia LeBeouf, and Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer will be joining the supporting cast.

But they're not afraid to let car buffs know they're going to see some high-grade eye candy tearing up the roadways when the movie hits theaters in June 2014, even before they transform themselves into heroic robots.

5-Second Films - KICKSTARTER Dude Bro Party Massacre 3

Alright people we have another film that you should back. Dude Bro Party Massacre 3 comes from our friends over at 5secondfilms.com

Make sure to head over to their KICKSTARTER page and give them some of your hard earned money!

Who the heck are you guys?

5secondfilms! 20-something internet comedy troupe #2,307. We've been providing sketch comedy videos, exactly 5 seconds in length, every single weekday since 2008. In the past 5 years we have NEVER missed a day. It's that consistency and reliability that has helped build a loving fanbase that comes back day after day.

This hard work has been recognized by celebrities and media outlets around the world, including CNN, SPIN Magazine, and TIME, which named 5sf one of the 50 Best Websites of 2013.

But our ideas and passion couldn't be contained in 5 seconds for long. We've shot longer sketches in the past, and now we put out weekly sketches on Uproxx Video.

Yet it still wasn't enough...WE WANTED MORE SECONDS!

Then we remembered a blood, sweat and beer-fueled 5sf called Dude Bro Party Massacre 3:

So, wait...this is going to be longer than 5 seconds, right?

Yes! Jeez haven't you been paying attention? It's going to be longer than a 5sf and it's even going to be longer than the 88-second trailer we shot a couple years back:

We're talking a FULL LENGTH FEATURE FILM MOVIE! That's like 5,400 seconds! And the more comments we saw on both videos, the more we knew that we weren't the only ones who wanted to see these oiled-up bros get chopped to bits in the gory, blood-spraying, hilarious fashion that 5secondfilms is oh-so-good at. Bloody and funny! That's how we like it. Kinda like this one:

Okay. I get it. So what's this movie going to be about?

DUDE BRO PARTY MASSACRE 3 follows BRENT CHIRINO as he enters the oil-misted halls of the DELTA BI THETA fraternity. Brent isn’t just any pledge... he’s a legacy. And it’s a legacy of death. See, Brent is here to solve the mystery of his identical twin brother BROCK’s murder, and he’ll do anything to crack the case... even attempt the frat’s most daring prank of all time.

After the Deltas’ senior prank causes two commercial jets to collide over an orphanage, they’re punished to a weekend at The Old Sorority House by the Lake. But they’re not the only ones there... a mysterious killer named MOTHERFACE lurks nearby. She knows the bros’ deepest fears... and she’s taking advantage of those fears to pick them off, one by shirtless one, in increasingly gory ways. It’s a race against time for Brent to discover the mysteries of his brother’s death before Motherface butchers them all!

But wait, there’s more! DUDE BRO PARTY MASSACRE 3 also features a softcore subplot, spliced in by the Filipino “producers!” Join Chico County’s own OFFICER SMINKLE as he investigates a rash of nudie trading cards featuring all the most bodacious sorority babes at East Chico University! Marvel as this gratuitous subplot somehow intersects with the main story!

Still not satisfied? What if we told you that this whole crazy package takes the form of a VHS recording that a Midwestern teenager made from a late-night broadcast in the late 80s? Which means you get the film, plus host segments, TV commercial parodies, fake news alerts, and more? Would that convince you to give us money? If not, go rent “Real Steel” and eat some Weight Watchers with your ferrets.

Seth Rogen Is A Sell Out

Sony Pictures has acquired movie rights to former "Saturday Night Live" writer Simon Rich's four-part New Yorker novella "Sell Out" for "This Is the End" filmmakers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to produce through their Point Grey Pictures banner, TheWrap has learned.

"Sell Out" follows a fictionalized version of Rich as he meets his great-great-grandfather Herschel, who was preserved in brine for 100 years after a pickle factory accident and is baffled by his descendant Simon's lifestyle as a script doctor in hipster-filled Brooklyn.

The New Yorker published "Sell Out" in January, just weeks after the release of Rich's collection of short stories "The Last Girlfriend on Earth." Bendik Kaltenborn provided illustrations for "Sell Out."

Rogen is not attached to star but he will produce with Goldberg and Point Grey's James Weaver, while Rich will executive produce.

Rogen and Goldberg co-wrote and co-directed Sony's apocalyptic comedy "This Is the End," which they also produced with Weaver. The movie has been garnering strong early buzz in advance of its June 14 opening against "Man of Steel."

Point Grey, which produced Universal's upcoming Rogen-Zac Efron comedy "Townies" and Jonathan Levine's well-reviewed dramedy "50/50," is also developing a buddy cop movie for Paramount that would pair Rogen with Kevin Hart, who is also producing with screenwriter Rodney Rothman.

An avid fan of time travel stories, Rich was inspired by Washington Irving's short story "Rip Van Winkle" and Jack Finney's illustrated novel "Time and Again," which director Doug Liman is developing for Lionsgate.

The son of New York Times icon Frank Rich, Simon Rich is a former writer for "Saturday Night Live" who has been writing for Pixar of late. Jason Reitman is developing Rich's novel "Elliot Allagash" under his Right of Way Films banner.
