Closed Circuit Review. Could Be One Of The Best Films Of The Year

Closed Circuit Review
By: MattInRC

The British political thriller Closed Circuit satisfies our need for intelligent Summer fare.

Intelligent human dramas are not usually in Hollywood's Summer toolbox. Explosions, gun battles, and sequels usually dominate the menu, with only a few rising to the top (Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Great Gatsby). The same goes for suspenseful political thrillers that don't rely on slow-motion gunplay or explosions to sell the sizzle. Closed Circuit not only doesn't need to rely on these devices, it's an intelligent and well-acted film that offers a refreshing alternative and an all too-relevant message about the post-9/11 world we live in.

Set in London, the film opens with a terrorist explosion at a crowded marketplace, killing 120 people, all of whom are featured on a menagerie of CCTV cameras. Their murders coincide with an anonymous tip of the mastermind's location, leading to his arrest. As he awaits what will be a high-profile trial, the British government takes extreme measures to close part of the proceedings to the public, based on the release of super-secret classified evidence. The defendant is assigned two lawyers, one for the public trial (Eric Bana), and the other for the closed portion (Rebecca Hall). But Martin and Claudia have a personal history that destroyed his marriage, a fact which the government of course is fully aware. When they assign the case after its first attorney commits suicide, it's all part of what becomes a complex and devious plan. Soon, books on shelves at Claudia's home are out of place and shadowy figures begin to trail the duo as they unravel a deepening conspiracy that goes almost to the top of the government. Legally prohibited from collaborating but realizing he needs Claudia to expose the real story, Martin realizes that he cannot trust anyone else, including his fellow investigator Devlin (Ciaran Hinds) or the even the Attorney General (Jim Broadbent) who assigned them the case.

Although sexual tension in a film like this could have unraveled everything, Bana and Hall's understated performances lend a realistic tone to things. They don't realize the web of lies, murder, and conspiracy they've entered until it's too late; and much like people when faced with extreme choices, they make the only one they can to preserve their lives. Director John Crowley paints a world filled with grays and washed out colors, instantly informing the audience of its somewhat desolate tone. By doing so, he projects a level of realism in which his actors instantly feel at home, from our leads to the supporting folks like Broadbent and Hinds, a personal favorite of mine.

Credit Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy producers Tim Bevan and Liza Chasin for this little gem, although Writer Stephen Knight does miss a bit of needed backstory. Why Bana and Hall are handling this case without a staff is never fully addressed, leaving us to wonder if we need a refresher course in British barrister history before entering the theater. But that's the joy of Closed Circuit, for its smart and instantly enveloping storyline encourages the viewer to learn more about the events it's portraying while making us keenly aware and even paranoid about a post-9/11 world where street cameras and invasions of privacy have become part of our daily routine. And yet, these are only part of its larger cautionary tale, demonstrating that governments will sometimes go to great measures in order to 'protect lives' while covering up their misdeeds in the process.

If you believe our world is heading towards that depicted in Person of Interest, then you'll like the tension and thought-provoking message which Closed Circuit infuses. It's a welcomed relief from the Summer movie season, and hopefully an indicator of the quality that lies ahead as we move into Fall. Closed Circuit is rated R for violence and language and has a runtime of 96 minutes.

GETAWAY Review. The Film Is Pure Adrenaline Rush

GETAWAY Review
By: RAMA

We were unable to make our screening for GETAWAY. But RAMA comes through with another great review. Make sure to LIKE his Facebook page and follow him on Twitter.

Those who know me well know that I’m a sucker for car chase movies. Not because I’m an expert on cars or driving, but it’s because I’m the complete opposite, and so the fantasy of driving recklessly, getting away clean, high speed in movies is about as addicting and irresistible as it gets and GETAWAY doesn’t disappoint me. If I were to describe this movie, I’d say it’s TAKEN meets PHONE BOOTH, because most of the time, you only hear the voice of the antagonist, giving strict instructions and must-obey commands, until he’s revealed at the end of the movie.

GETAWAY’s only low points are the writing and Selena Gomez.

GETAWAY” is the gritty, heart-pounding action thriller from Warner Bros. Pictures and Dark Castle Entertainment starring Academy Award® nominee Ethan Hawke (“Training Day,” “The Purge,” “Sinister”), actress and international music sensation Selena Gomez (“Springbreakers,” “Wizards of Waverly Place”), and Academy Award® winner Jon Voight (“Coming Home,” the “National Treasure” films) under the direction of Courtney Solomon (“An American Haunting”), who also produced the film.
Former race car driver Brent Magna (Hawke) is pitted against the clock. Desperately trying to save the life of his kidnapped wife, Brent commandeers a custom Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake, taking it and its unwitting owner (Gomez) on a high-speed race against time, at the command of the mysterious villain holding his wife hostage.

Ya know, when it comes to car chase movies like GETAWAY, I always wonder if the editor would see his work as a challenge or a nightmare trying to piece the cuts together. Now, what’s unique about GETAWAY to me is that instead of giving you wider. longer frames, this movie gives you closer, much personal, rapid shots. I like both methods, and I don’t mind this new one at all. Some may dismiss it as some kind of GoPro camera approach, but that’s what exciting about it. Filmmakers these days want to try methods that would get you the audience to feel like you’re part of the movie, of course most of them sadly turn to 3D to justify it, but in the case of GETAWAY, with different angles of seeing the characters as they drive, or seeing the cars in front of you as you chase them, it kinda adds up to the chaos of it all, especially when there’s a countdown element involved, it just makes things more exciting.

I will always have love for such greats as The French Connection, Ronin, or even those Fast & Furious movies, but I think there’s room for the kind of chase sequences that GETAWAY has to offer.

As I mentioned earlier, this movie’s weak points are the writing and Selena Gomez. If I had to hear another minute of Gomez and Ethan Hawke bickering about pointless matters, I’d scream, “Just drive already!” I understand how Selena Gomez’s character is supposed to play into the story but there are instances that make you know that the writing is just lazy and it just does not know how to structure the dialogue properly, it badly wants you to see why Gomez’s character would choose on her own will to stick around but it just doesn’t sell it right. Kudos for Gomez for trying to break out of her Disney persona, with Spring Breakers and now, GETAWAY, but that voice of hers to me is like listening to constant sounds of scraping squeaking chalk on a blackboard. In other words, an extremely painful experience.

I’m not a car expert but I think those of you who are would definitely want to see what this specially customized Shelby Super Snake Mustang can do in GETAWAY. There’s no CG here, all the crashes are real, even Ethan Hawke did some of his own stunt driving. Set on the streets of Sofia, Bulgaria and pitted against the clock, and under the pressure of an antagonist commanding from an undisclosed location, things get intense and explosive, GETAWAY is pure adrenaline rush.

The Grandmaster Review. Film Doesn't Know What It Wants To Be

The Grandmaster Review
By: MattInRC

The Grandmaster can't decide what it wants to be. And that makes me want to throw something.

Director Kar Wai Wong has had a grand film career, most of which has gone unnoticed by American audiences. There's In the Mood for Love and 2046 - films about unrequited but ultimately doomed love - and the quirky Chungking Express, which featured an expired can of pineapple slices as a major plot point. Highly-stylized and beautifully shot, these and others show a director who's not been afraid to push the boundaries of cinema. Unfortunately, his newest film The Grandmaster can't decide if it's a tender love story, a Kung-Fu epic, or a poignant tale of revenge in post-WWII China. That's too bad, because it looks so damn good trying.

As the film opens in 1936 China, Ip Man (Tony Leung) does more than merely practice martial arts, but is clearly better than any of the southern brawlers he meets on a rain-soaked evening. Sporting a white hat and using a fighting style called wing chun, Ip gains the attention of the elder grandmaster Gong Baosen (Wang Qingxiang), who wishes to demonstrate northern Kung Fu superiority before he retires. But it's also clear that Baosen is looking for a successor, to impart a famous technique that only he knows and to reunite both regions before Japanese occupation destroys the ancient world that Ip and the others hold so dear. Complicating matters is the arrival of Gong's daughter Er (Ziyi Zhang), whose breathtaking beauty is only equaled by her skill as a martial artist. The holder of the elusive 64 Hands, she wants control of her father's secret, hoping to bring China into a different kind of age; but her world has no use for a female leader, with Gong Sr. choosing the radical Ma San (Jin Zhang). Ip Er and Ip tussle in an elaborately-shot stairway scene that seems more like ballet than a precursor to a competition. But any demonstration and the couple's growing feelings for each other are put on hold as China descends into World War II, isolating the two until years later. As Ip tries to put the pieces of his shattered life back together, he meets Er one last time, and learns how her triumph over San came at a great price.

The Grandmaster is not directly connected to the Ip Man series, but does feature the titular character who gained fame for training Bruce Lee. And although there are scenes near the end of Ip palling around with Lee, there's simply too much going on prior for us to care. Grandmaster can't decide if it wants to be a well-shot action piece, a stirring drama, a poignant love story, or a tale of revenge. Something like this needs time to breathe, but due to contractual obligations to keep the movie at 99 minutes - the international version is much longer - none of those aspects are performed consistently well. The fight scenes are at once gorgeous but shot too close and edited too fast for audiences to take it all in. Choreographed by Hero and Iron Monkey's Yuen Wo Ping, there's the cliche gentle push by a master that sends lesser folk flying into gates, and the flip-over-slide-along-the-floor as our hero absorbs a crushing leg blow. The action is eye candy to those of us who enjoy such spectacle, especially the stairway scene reminiscent of the battle between Moon and Flying Snow in Hero. But Director Wong's drama languishes too long in a heaping pile of unnecessary plots, robbing the film of any inertia while failing to show the connection between basic plot points. It's hard not to compare his final product to other action imports from the last two decades, which might not look as good but certainly were better constructed.

In the end, The Grandmaster could have been a sweeping two-part epic, showcasing Wong's acumen while bringing Ip Man's first 50 years to a dramatic close and paving the way for a film exclusively about his training of Bruce Lee. Instead, we get four incoherent tales shot on top of each other like one of Ip's throwdowns with southern China masters as he makes his way through the building floors ala The Raid: Redemption. Wong is an artist who should get more respect in America than he does, but this one isn't the grand entrance he was hoping. The Grandmaster is rated PG-13 for violence and has a runtime of 99 minutes.

Matt Damon Joins Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar”

The Playlist has learned that Matt Damon has joined Christopher Nolan’sInterstellar” in a small, undisclosed role. The character, like all of the roles in the film, is being kept under wraps, but sources close to the actor tell us he’ll only be shooting on the project for two weeks in Iceland (for comparison sake, the entire shoot is scheduled for four months). It's another quick appearance for Damon in a forthcoming film, as he also has a small cameo in Terry Gilliam’s “The Zero Theorem,” which debuts at the Venice Film Festival very soon (look for our review in the upcoming days).

Meanwhile, Damon looks to have found what will be his directorial debut: “A Murder Foretold," penned by Academy Award-winning “Argo” screenwriter Chris Terrio. The film is based off a 2008 New Yorker article by David Grann, that tells the true story of a man who is gunned down in the escalating violence in Guatemala, and leaves behind a videotape after his death implicating the president, his wife, and other close aides in his killing. Of course, this rocked the nation, with a special prosecutor who digs deep to find the shocking truth behind the man's murder. The project is currently set up at Paramount and Indian Paintbrush under Steve Zaillan’s Film Rites production banner. (Update: Following our report, Deadline has revealed the title of the movie to be "The Foreigner.")

As you might remember, Damon was supposed to direct “Promised Land” in the beginning of 2012, but reshoots on “Elysium” overlapped into the time he had planned to do pre-production work on the movie. Knowing his schedule would be too tight, Damon made the early decision to bow out and found a replacement in friend and filmmaker Gus Van Sant. It was Damon's third time working with him, and having worked with helmers like Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Terry Gilliam, Steven Soderbergh, Clint Eastwood and many other auteurs, he's been itching to join his friend Ben Affleck in trying his hand at directing. (Damon is also attached to "Father Daughter Time" at Warner Bros. though it looks like 'Foretold' is going first.)

So some exciting plans on the horizon for Damon, but before we go, here's one last bit of "Interstellar" trivia: celebrated Indian actor Irrfan Khan ("Life Of Pi," "The Amazing Spider-Man") turned down a role in Nolan's film. "I was in talks with them for an important role. It had a great compact cast, but I can't divulge much about that. They expected a huge commitment from my end. I had to stay in the U.S. for four months at a stretch. I tried to work out my schedule and suggested if I could shuttle between India and the U.S. as it wouldn't have been possible for me to be there for that long," he told The Times Of India. "I wanted to be here for 'The Lunchbox' and 'D-Day.' They couldn't allow that. I don't have a tendency to regret what I do, but knowing it's a Christopher Nolan film, I can say that this has been one of the most difficult decisions I've made."

"Interstellar" opens on November 7, 2014.

47 Ronin Japanese Trailer & Poster

Bucking the trend that says trailers following one another get longer, the new Japanese promo for 47 Ronin is here.

Drawn from a true Japanese story (but with a lot of fantastical elements bolted on and Keanu Reeves chucked into the middle of the tale), 47 Ronin finds a group of warriors in disarray.

After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honour to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves), a half-breed they once rejected, as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors.

As this exiled, enslaved outcast becomes their most deadly weapon, he will transform into the hero who inspires the band of outnumbered rebels to seize eternity.

Time will tell whether this one will emerge from talk of production problems, budget crunches, re-editing and creative disagreements to find success like World War Z

ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY Goes Into Production

DISNEY’S “ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY” BEGINS PRODUCTION

Film to Shoot Entirely in Los Angeles Area; Hits Theaters October 10, 2014

Disney has kicked off production on “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” the first live-action film adaptation of Judith Viorst’s 1972 illustrated children’s classic. The film, directed by Independent Spirit Award-winner Miguel Arteta (“The Good Girl,” “Cedar Rapids,” “Youth in Revolt”) from a screenplay by Rob Lieber, is a 21 Laps Entertainment/Jim Henson Company production. Shooting in the Los Angeles area, with locations in the cities of Pasadena and Arcadia, the San Fernando Valley and Melody Ranch in Newhall, the film hits theaters nationwide on October 10, 2014.

Steve Carell (“The Way, Way Back,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” the forthcoming “Foxcatcher”) and Jennifer Garner (“Dallas Buyers Club, “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” “Juno”) star as Alexander’s upbeat parents. The veteran performers are joined in the film by a trio of young talents that includes 16-year-old Dylan Minnette (“Lost,” the upcoming “Prisoners”) as Alexander’s older brother, Anthony; 15-year-old Kerris Dorsey (TV’s “Ray Donovan,” “Moneyball”) as sister Emily; and 12-year-old Australian native Ed Oxenbould (Oz TV’s “Puberty Blues”), who makes his big-screen feature debut as the film’s title character, Alexander.

Emmy® winner (and Golden Globe® nominee) Megan Mullally (“Will & Grace”) also joins the cast, along with Jennifer Coolidge (“American Pie,” “Legally Blonde,” TV’s “2 Broke Girls”) and Bella Thorne (“Shake It Up!”).

The film is produced by Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum,” “Date Night,” “Real Steel”), Emmy® nominee and CEO of the Jim Henson Company Lisa Henson, and 21 Laps Entertainment President Dan Levine (“The Internship,” “Along Came Polly,” “Freedom Writers”). It’s executive produced by industry veteran Philip Steuer (“Saving Mr. Banks,” “Oz The Great and Powerful,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” trilogy) and Jason Lust (“Whip It,” “The Waiting Game”).

Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” follows the exploits of 11-year-old Alexander as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life—a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his brother, sister, mom and dad all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn't had one.

Director Arteta’s key filmmaking team includes cinematographer Terry Stacey (“50/50,” “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”), two-time Oscar®-nominated production designer Michael Corenblith (“The Blind Side,” “Saving Mr. Banks,” HBO’s “Game Change”), and two artists with whom he has previously collaborated: Oscar-nominated film editor Pam Martin (“The Fighter,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Youth in Revolt”) and veteran costume designer Nancy Steiner (“Little Miss Sunshine,” “Lost in Translation,” “The Good Girl,” “Youth in Revolt”).

“Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” published in 1972, was written by Judith Viorst and illustrated by Ray Cruz. The endearing, enduring classic (with more than 2 million copies in print) became an ALA Notable Children’s Book while also winning a George G. Stone Center Recognition of Merit, a Georgia Children’s Book Award, and distinction as a Reading Rainbow book. Viorst followed this book (inspired by her own three sons’ childhoods—Alexander, Anthony and Nicholas) with two sequels: “Alexander, Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday” (1978) and “Alexander, Who's Not (Do You Hear Me? I Mean It!) Going to Move” (1995). The 1972 original was first adapted to the small screen as a half-hour HBO animated musical in 1990 before Viorst collaborated with composers Charles Strouse (music) and Shelley Markham (musical score) for a 1998 stage musical at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

James Spader Cast As Ultron In The Avengers 2

Poor old DC.  Marvel with a casting bombshell that rains on its parade even as it mixes metaphors. What news, you ask? Only that James Spader will play the titular menace in Avengers sequel Age Of Ultron.

Originally announced by writer/director Joss Whedon at Comic-Con, Age Of Ultron will see Tony Stark and the shawarma-chomping gang taking on a brand new threat torn from the pages of Marvel comic lore and given a spit-and-polish origin story wash for the big screen. Ultron is a criminally insane, rogue sentient robot dedicated to conquest and the extermination of humanity. He comes loaded with several powers, including, strength, agility, stunning intelligence and, oh yes, a rage-filled loathing for our heroes and an intent to destroy them. Bad robot! Bad!

Spader seems like a fine choice to play the role, given his ability to play smarts, snark and menace when required. Plus he should have a proper handle on Whedon’s trademark snappy dialogue, assuming Ultron gets to be quippy. Marvel’s statement doesn’t specify if he’ll be suiting up or stepping into a performance capture outfit a la Mark Ruffalo’s take on the Hulk, but we’d guess the latter. Spader's never done cartoon voice work or performance-capture before, so this marks a brave new dawn for the actor. But don't worry: he got a message of encouragement from the last guy to tangle with the supergroup, as Tom Hiddleston tweeted his support.

With Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, and most likely Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner back, the new cast will also include Elizabeth Olsen (assuming her deal closes) and a rumoured Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron will be out on May 1, 2015.

Win Tickets To An Advance Screening For NBC'S Upcoming Show THE BLACKLIST In San Francisco

Win Tickets To An Advance Screening For the upcoming NBC show THE BLACKLIST on Thursday, September 12th in San Francisco.

Be one of the first to see NBC's thrilling new drama, THE BLACKLIST, starring James Spader. When the FBI’s most wanted fugitive, Raymond “Red” Reddington mysteriously turns himself in to help catch the worst’s worst criminals on his “blacklist”, no one knows what to believe – especially not Liz Keen, the new agent he demands to work with.

For decades, ex-government agent Raymond "Red" Reddington (James Spader) has been one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives. Brokering shadowy deals for criminals across the globe, Red was known by many as "The Concierge of Crime." Now, he's mysteriously surrendered to the FBI with an explosive offer: he will help catch a long-thought-dead terrorist, Ranko Zamani, under the condition that he speaks only to Elizabeth "Liz" Keen, an FBI profiler fresh out of Quantico. For Liz, it's going to be one hell of a first day on the job. What follows is a twisting series of events as the race to stop a terrorist begins. What are Red's true intentions? Why has he chosen Liz, a woman with whom he seemingly has no connection? Does Liz have secrets of her own? Zamani, we come to find out, is only the first of many on a list that Red has compiled over the years: a "blacklist" of politicians, mobsters, spies and international terrorists. He will help catch them all... with the caveat that Liz continues to work as his partner. Red will teach Liz to think like a criminal and "see the bigger picture"... whether she wants to or not. From writer/executive producer Jon Bokenkamp ("Taking Lives") and executive producers John Eisendrath ("Alias," "My Own Worst Enemy") and John Davis ("Predator," "I, Robot," "Chronicle") comes a global thriller that will become more mysterious with each name on the list. One-hour drama. less

Come Help John Herzfeld’s "REACH ME" Reach It's Kickstarter Goal

Writer/Director John Herzfeld’s Passion Project Has Three Weeks Remaining to Reach Kickstarter Campaign Goal.

Writer/Director John Herzfeld’s passion project is coming to fruition. REACH ME, an uplifting drama with Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone and an accomplished ensemble cast including Kyra Sedgwick (TNT’s The Closer), Tom Berenger (Inception, Training Day), Terry Crews (The Expendables), Kelsey Grammer (Starz’ BOSS), and rap superstar Nelly, was hit with a major roadblock during filming last winter when an investor backed out during the second week of shooting. Defying the option to shut down production, producers poured their remaining financial resources into the project, believing this was a film the public deserved to see. While their efforts allowed the film to finish shooting, the film still requires a helping hand from the audience to complete.

The Kickstarter campaign for the film ends on September 19. For more information, check out the campaign page for clips, photos, rewards and news (http://www.kickstarter.com/ projects/reachme/reach-me-the- movie-kickstarter), and Twitter (https://twitter.com/ ReachMeMovie) for additional updates.

Along with John Herzfeld (15 Minutes, 2 Days In The Valley), producers Rebekah Chaney and Cassian Elwes (Lee Daniels’ The Butler) recently launched a Kickstarter campaign on August 20th to encourage the audience to join in completing the film. With the support of the cast providing enticing incentives, including on-set visits, wardrobe from the film, signed copies of their headshots, and one-on-one time being coached by a former MMA World Champion, moviegoers can now become a part of the crucial process and connect with inspiring filmmakers. Until the deadline on September 19th, backers are able to donate what they can to help the cause, and complete the film as the filmmakers intended.

“This film is a complete labor of love for us,” says Herzfeld.

REACH ME tells the story of a dozen strangers with seemingly nothing in common. Their lives begin to inadvertently cross paths as a result of a thin, self-published paperback motivational book by an anonymous author (Tom Berenger), who is currently in hiding. Eventually all the characters’ lives intersect, by coming into contact with the book or with someone who knows about the book, and each one soon learns that their lives will never be the same.

Written, Produced and Directed by John Herzfeld, and produced by Rebekah Chaney and Cassian Elwes, the film stars Sylvester Stallone, Kyra Sedgwick, Lauren Cohan (AMC’s The Walking Dead), Ryan Kwanten (HBO’s True Blood), Terry Crews, Cary Elwes (Saw, The Princess Bride), Kelsey Grammer, Thomas Jane (The Punisher), Tom Berenger, Kevin Connolly (HBO’s Entourage), Tom Sizemore (Black Hawk Down), David O’Hara (The Departed), Omari Hardwick (The A-Team), Elizabeth Henstridge (ABC’s upcoming Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D), Danny Aiello (Do The Right Thing), and rap star Nelly.

BBC's LUTHER To Hit The Big Screen

While the idea of seeing Idris Elba’s rule-snapping John Luther stalking the big screen is hardly new, it would seem we are actually getting closer to it being a reality, with Luther creator Neil Cross talking up his progress at the Edinburgh Television Festival.

"I've written the script and we hope to get the film made next year," he said. "Idris is a brilliant leading man and we've hoped to turn Luther into a movie for a long time." Cross has drawn inspiration for the film’s plot from his novel about the character, The Calling, which is set before the series happens. It’ll allow for some characters – such as Indira Varma’s Zoe – to return, and set up everything that happens to John Luther in the original episodes.

Sadly for the series itself, the movie world has now snapped up that leading man for itself, and Elba’s busy big screen career means that we’ve likely seen the last of “Loofah” on our tellies, with the final episode of the recent third series definitely feeling like Cross and co wrapping things up. Any movie would have to find space in Elba's increasingly packed schedule, though he's already said he'd make the time.

Still, while a prequel would rule out an appearance from Ruth Wilson’s psychotic, cunning Alice, Cross is exploring the idea of a spin-off about her character, which he’s been cooking up since at least last year. "The truth is I absolutely adore Alice! We're kind of thinking very loosely of a mix between The Talented Mr. Ripley and The Last Seduction."

Jessica Alba Is Barely Lethal

Jessica Alba is perhaps not the first person you might think of to play a scheming villain. Which probably makes her a good casting choice for Fanboys director Kyle Newman’s new film, Barely Lethal.

Alba is indeed set to play Victoria Knox, the former associate of a teen assassin called Megan (Hailee Steinfeld), who becomes angry when the younger woman decides she’s had enough of the contract killing life, fakes her own death and enrols at a suburban high school. Which, as Chloe Grace Moretz might be able to tell you from Kick-Ass 2 and the upcoming Carrie, might be an even more dangerous place to be.

Samuel L Jackson is on board as Steinfeld’s mentor, with Newman directing from a script by John D’Arco. Barely Lethal kicks off filming in October.

Next up for Alba is Machete Kills, set for release here on October 11. She’ll also be seen in Dear Eleanor, Stretch and Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, which will hit our screens on August 29, 2014.
