Two DC Superhero Movies Per Year

Are You Ready For More DC Superhero Movies?

In the past, Warner Bros. hasn't done too much with their partner, DC Comics. Sure, they've regularly put out films about Batman and Superman, but the line has really always stopped there. Despite having a cadre of superheros at their disposal, they've never seemed to be inclined to take full advantage of them. Then Marvel got into the movie business and now everything is changing.

At New York Comic Con, is reporting that DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns expects two DC properties to hit theaters every year after the end of the Harry Potter franchise. The second most successful franchise of all time, the Harry Potter films have brought in nearly $2 billion at the box office since 2001 and each averages about $285 million. Naturally, the end of the series leaves a big whole in the pocket of the studio, and, apparently, they believe that their comic book rights are the perfect remedy.

Next summer will be a perfect litmus test to find out how many superhero movies the movie-going audiences is really willing to swallow. Over the course of the season, theaters will see the release of Thor, Captain America and Green Lantern. If all three movies are massively successful, then the plan just might work. If not, Warner Bros. could be in serious trouble.

Marvel Superhero Will Appear In The Deadpool Movie?

Which Other Marvel Superhero Will  Appear In The Deadpool Movie?

Here’s the dish from New York Comic-Con on which Marvel universe characters you can expect to see in the promised Deadpool movie. I can tell you that there’s definitely one guest star lined up that really took me by surprise.

So if you don't want to find out who might be appearring then turn away now!

Of course, some of the characters are very closely associated with Deadpool anyway.

There’s Blind Al, Deadpool’s sort-of-roommate, and Patch, the barman-come-mercenary dispatcher who gives Deadpool his jobs. I’m sure you were already expecting those. Then there’s several Weapon-X characters, including (but not limited to) Wyre, Ajax, Sluggo and Garrison Kane.

Wade Wilson’s love affair with Vanessa Carlysle is apparently a key part of the story, though I’ve been promised that she’s never seen in her Copycat guise and there’s no indication she’s a mutant at all. But this won’t be a mutant-shy production…

…because one of the X-Men appears. Can you guess which one? Place your bets now, ladies and gentlemen.

It’s an X-Man we’ve already seen on the big screen. Twice. Played by the same actor each time. Maybe they’ll get him back for this too. Do you know who it is yet? It’s none other than Piotr Rasputin. It’s Colossus.

Will it be a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo? I asked, and was told:

Nope. He is in more than one scene and has got some stuff to do.

I’ve also been told that the Wolverine: X-Men Origins version of Wade Wilson as a Weapon X project makes… um… a special appearance. in the screenplay. They had to deal with it somehow.

Blue Valentine Trailer & NC-17 Rating

Blue Valentine Trailer And Slapped NC-17 Rating

Now after watching the trailer to the film you will wonder how did this film get slapped with the evil NC-17. The film is a romantic drama film written and directed by Derek Cianfrance. It is co-written by Joey Curtis and Cami Delavigne and stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

The film centers on a married couple, Dean and Cindy, and their relationship over a number of years by shifting between different time periods. Problems with the marriage centre around Cindy's ambition, juxtaposed to Dean's contentment to centre his life around his wife and child.

After the Jump, it is explained why the film got the NC-17 rating.

It is a powerful, worthy film, and the NC-17 is an absolute head-scratcher. I'm told the rating was given for a scene in which the characters played by Gosling and Williams try to save their crumbling marriage by spending a night away in a hotel. They get drunk and their problems intensify when he wants to have sex and she doesn't, but will to get him off her back. That hurts his pride and the result is an upsetting scene that makes you squirm, but is an honest one that establishes clearly that this couple has nothing left and isn't going to make it because love has turned into contempt. There is barely any nudity in the scene, as I recall  and there is no violence. It was hardly a moment that would make you think, well here comes an NC-17.

The film is set for a limited release on December 31, 2010

Mike Myers To Voice Pepé Le Pew

Mike Myers To Voice Pepé Le Pew

Mike Myers used to joke that donning the 80 pounds of faux-latex blubber to play Fat Bastard in Austin Powers caused him to sweat so much that "by the end of the day, I was Pepé Le Pew." We have learned that Warner Bros. Pictures is now developing a live-action/CGI movie on the lovelorn French skunk and Myers is attached to voice the lead role.

The decision to reinvigorate the Looney Tunes cast of characters — which includes fading American icons like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig — is a high priority for Warner Bros., for while they still throw off a billion dollars in licensing revenue annually, that’s barely a fifth of what Disney makes every year from licensing better-known characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

Created in 1945, Pepé Le Pew starred in over a dozen animated short films for Warner Bros., and one of them, Chuck Jones’s For Scent-imental Reasons, even won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Subject (Cartoons) in 1949.

But the intervening half-century has not been so kind to Monsieur Le Pew, who was always one of the lesser-known Warner Bros. characters, and remains even more obscure today. According to E-Poll Market Research data, even the most popular of the Looney Tunes bunch have trouble connecting with audiences: For instance, more Americans over the age of 13 can recognize Mike Myers (68 percent) than can recognize Bugs Bunny (66 percent) or Daffy Duck (56 percent). Even tougher for Warner Bros., more Americans have a favorable impression of Bugs (65 percent) and Daffy (55 percent) than they do of Myers (52 percent).

Myers, of course, supplied the ogre Shrek with his Scottish brogue in four films for DreamWorks Animation totaling $1.2 billion in worldwide grosses. But unlike the Shrek franchise, we’re told that in Warner’s new Le Pew, only the skunk and his perennially unrequited love interest, Penelope Pussycat, would be CGI characters; the rest of the Le Pew film will be shot in live action.

First Picture Of Michelle Williams As Monroe

 Michelle Williams As Monroe

It's icons 'r' us this afternoon, thanks to this uncannily doppelganger-like shot of Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn. The actress is togging up to play the iconic blonde in the Weinstein Company/Trademark Films co-production, now underway at Pinewood.

My Week With Marilyn is an adaptation of Colin Clark's novel, which recounts the story of Monroe's visit to Britain to film The Prince And The Showgirl with Lawrence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) in 1956.

As you might expect, the pair don't exactly become bosom buddies. Under pressure and looking for a temporary escape from the Hollywood spotlight, Monroe takes off on a week-long jaunt with Clark (Eddie Remayne), a lowly on-set assistant, in a kind of Roman Road holiday. Monroe, recently married to Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott), gets to sample the delights of London life. Here's hoping she gives jellied eels a wide berth.

Williams joins a strong British cast that includes Judi Dench (Dame Sybil Thorndike), Julia Ormond (Vivien Leigh), Zoe Wanamaker, Emma Watson, Toby Jones, Derek Jacobi, Simon Russell Beale and Dominic Cooper. Simon Curtis (Cranford) is the man behind the camera.

"Slash" Forms His Own Movie Company-Slasher Films

Unless you answer to Rob Zombie, what musician has a name better suited to horror film making than Slash? The iconic guitarist of Guns N' Roses and Velvet Revolver has teamed with Scout Productions to start Slasher Films. They will produce edgy contemporary horror fare with a nod to the thrillers of the '70s and '80s. They've set up their first: Nothing to Fear, a horror/thriller that follows a young family as it tries to reinvent itself by moving to a small town in rural Kansas. The family is tormented by an ancient demon with an insatiable blood lust. The script was written by Jonathan W.C. Mills, who's currently working on the Gold Circle pic Inside Passage.

"My audience is made up of young, edgy, discerning consumers, with an appetite for quality and a hint of anarchy."

Scout Productions has generated the TV series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and films that include Transsiberian, Session 9 and Fog of War. Scout will finance development of screenplays for Slasher Films, with Scout toppers Michael Williams and Rob Eric overseeing production. Nothing to Fear will begin production early next year, with Shaun Redick and Ray Mansfield as executive producers. "I've always been a huge horror fan and creating films that take you back to the days where horror movies actually scared the hell out of you is something I've always wanted to do," Slash said in a statement. The rocker will produce films and target them to an established fan base that follows him on tour and online.

Reboot Ghost Rider! No Sequels! By: Jonathan Cyfer

Reboot Ghost Rider! No Sequels!
By:  Jonathan Cyfer

Make sure you Follow Jonathan Cyfer on twitter and read his blog The Missing Man.

Nicholas Cage has made some terrific films and, at least at one point in his career, he was an engaging actor who brought a lot of edgy power to his roles. Ghost Rider (2007) was not one of his better roles or even an engaging film.

I can't really lay the whole thing at Cage's feet. The film was badly conceived, badly written, badly directed, badly...well, you get the idea. I didn't like it. And I really wanted to like it. I have kind of a thing for 1970s fiction. Too bad this film missed the mark.

I'm not a fan of "Satanic" comic books. It takes a very fine writer to blend the supernatural and superhero genres and most of the time, it doesn't play well. It also is a story that may be too rooted in its context.

The original comic book character Ghost Rider/Johnny Blaze first appeared in 1972, about the same time as the film The Exorcist (1973), which is currently being re-released on DVD and Blu-Ray. Rosemary's Baby (1968) was a runaway hit just a few years before, and it seemed the late 1960s and early 1970s were just the right time to explore a lot of dark, satanic fiction. It was the right atmosphere in which to give birth to Johnny Blaze.

Actually, the comic book probably wasn't that much better than the film, which could be a clue that not all comic books need to be made into major motion pictures. Johnny Blaze was a young (which Nicholas Cage is not) motorcycle stunt rider (factor the real life motorcycle thrill seeker Evel Knievel being amazingly popular in the early 1970s into all this) who was working in a show owned by his step-father "Crash" Simpson. He learns that Simpson is dying of cancer and makes a deal with "you-know-who" to save Simpson's life in exchange for Blaze's soul. The deal works and the cancer is cured, but as always happens when you play with fire, Johnny gets burned. Simpson dies anyway in a motorcycle crash. The bad guy, who goes by the name of Mephisto, comes to collect.

The only thing saving Johnny's soul is his girlfriend Roxanne's "selfless love" which turns out to be some sort of "counterspell", but it only goes so far. By day, Johnny Blaze is a hot-headed motorcycle stunt guy. By night, he shares a body with a demon named Zarathos and becomes the Ghost Rider. Satanic and heroic daring do commences.

Antiheroes are sometimes more fun than squeaky clean heroes, because they always ride the edge between good and evil, leaning toward falling into evil. That's probably what makes Batman so attractive, but it only goes so far with Ghost Rider.

Personally, I could go the rest of my life and not miss a lack of Ghost Rider films in the universe, but if you have to make one, choose a younger actor, revisit your source material, and for crying out loud, pick a hot babe who actually makes me believe she gives a damn about being in the film. I thought Eva Mendes was trying to act and sleep at the same time (of course, her opinion of the film could be a lot like mine..maybe she needed some quick cash). Ghost Rider is proof that special effects and lots of action sequences don't make a good, or even a halfway good film.

Note to producers, writers, and director: either find something about the sequel that will really hook the audience, or find another project.

Oh yeah. I'm sorry to say this. But Nicholas Cage is just plain miscast. Yeah, he is a thrill-seeker, risk-taker like Blaze, but he doesn't bring youth or "soul" to the character.

Hit the reboot button, please.

Chelsea Handler "This Means War"

Chelsea Handler To Star In "This Means War"

Chelsea Lately host Chelsea Handler has landed a juicy role opposite Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy and Chris Pine in This Means War, the McG-directed 20th Century Fox comedy. Handler will play the best friend and confidante of a woman (Witherspoon) who is lusted after by two best friends. The pals are CIA agents who wage an escalating war for her affection. This marks Handler's second studio role, as she just completed the Universal Pictures/Illumination Entertainment CG-live action film Hop, which stars Russell Brand.

The film deal comes at a time when the E! host has hit the bestseller list with her third book, Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang, with her first two, My Horizontal Life and Vodka, It's Me, Chelsea still on the paperback lists. She just hosted the Video Music Awards and her stand-up comedy tour has sold out in 80 cities. She begins shooting This Means War later this month.

Handler, who previously played roles in two movies I never heard of--Cattle Call and Steam--is going against the grain in terms of late night chat hosts who chase movie careers.

Idris Elba Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Idris Elba Talks Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Idris Elba and Johnny Whitworth are in negotiations to join the cast of “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” Columbia’s sequel to the 2007 hit.

The movie, with Nicolas Cage back as the demonic biker anti-hero, has Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor behind the cameras. Based on the Marvel comic, the pic is set to begin shooting in late November in Romania and Turkey.

The story sees Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider (Cage), hiding out in remote Eastern Europe and struggling to repress his curse. Blaze is recruited by a sect to take on the devil (Ciaran Hinds), who wants to take over his mortal son’s body on the kid’s birthday.

Elba plays an alcoholic warrior monk tasked with finding Ghost Rider. Whitworth plays a criminal who is recruited by the devil to find the boy and is later turned into a demonic creature.

Neveldine and Taylor also wrote the script, working off a story by David Goyer. Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Michael De Luca, Ashok Amritraj and Steven Paul are producing.

Columbia will release the film in North America, and Hyde Park Entertainment has international distribution rights.

Elba recently came on board a new adaptation of James Patterson’s best-selling Alex Cross books; he starts work on “Cross” in 2011. The character previously was played by Morgan Freeman in “Along Came a Spider” and “Kiss the Girls.”

In the meantime, Elba next will be seen in the title role in the hit British detective drama “Luther,” which hits BBC America this month, and plays Heimdall in Marvel’s “Thor,” due in May.

Tom Hanks Thinking About "Sleeping Dogs"

Tom Hanks Thinking About "Sleeping Dogs"

Tom Hanks may be the first actor to board Paramount’s “Sleeping Dogs,” Kathryn Bigelow’s follow-up to “The Hurt Locker.”

The project was previously known as “Triple Frontier” and reunites Bigelow with her “Hurt Locker” scribe Mark Boal.

The story is set in the border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, which is a haven for organized crime, and centers on five men of various ages working in the zone.

The project became a hot property in the wake of “Hurt Locker’s” Oscar wins, and since the winter months of the awards season many names have popped up in association with “Dogs,” whose title may change yet again, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Sean Penn and Jeremy Renner.

No attachments had been made as the script was being worked on and the project had no start date. But as it firms up, so does the acting component.

"The Nightmare Before Christmas" 4D Makes Return To El Capitan

"The Nightmare Before Christmas" 4D Makes Return To El Capitan Theater

Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" makes its highly anticipated annual return to its favorite haunt - Hollywood's legendary El Capitan Theatre - for a special engagement from October 21 through October 31, and for the first time ever, in 4-D, it was announced today by Lylle Breier, senior vice president of worldwide special events for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

"As always, the El Capitan is your ‘Nightmare' headquarters, and this year, our guests will be introduced to the magic of 4-D. The film will be presented in Disney Digital 3-DTM, and there will be exciting sensory effects for our guests to experience at the same time - including wind, snow, fog, and much more. It's a way of seeing "The Nightmare Before Christmas" like never before for our loyal customers who have made a tradition out of seeing this Disney classic here every year."

The engagement kicks off on Thursday October 21 at 7:00 pm with opening night festivities hosted by Disney producer Don Hahn ("Beauty and the Beast," "The Lion King," "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"), and there will be special ghoulish frights and delights for opening night guests as well.

The film screens daily at 10:00 am, 12:15 pm, 2:30 pm, 4:45 pm, 7:00 pm, and 9:15 pm. Special late night Halloween weekend shows will be given at 11:15 pm Fridays and Saturdays only.

Tickets can be purchased at the El Capitan box office (6838 Hollywood Blvd.), online at www.elcapitantickets.com, or by calling 1-800-DISNEY6. Special group rate tickets for parties of 20 or more are available by calling 1-818-845-3110.

Disney's Soda Fountain and Studio Store, located adjacent to the El Capitan Theatre, joins in the Halloween spirit by offering a special "Pumpkin King Dinner" on select days, which includes dinner, ghoulish cupcake decorating, a commemorative photo and a special gift. Seating is limited and reservations are required.

Commenting on the announcement, Breier said, "We're delighted to be bringing ‘Nightmare Before Christmas' back to the El Capitan Theatre in a new and exciting way using both glorious Disney Digital 3-D and our special brand of 4-D for the first time ever. Our guests will get closer than ever to Halloweentown's beloved Pumpkin King, Jack Skellington, as he attempts to take over the Christmas holiday. Each year brings new screams of delight from our audiences, and they love being able to see their favorite Tim Burton characters in a whole new way. The film grows more popular every year with moviegoers and we're very excited to continue our Halloween tradition."

The enormously popular stop-motion animated feature, directed by Henry Selick and presented by Walt Disney Pictures, was converted from its original 2-D format into a stunning dimensional and enchanting 3-D version in 2006 using the latest advancements in 3-D technology and animation. It became the first movie in industry history to be released exclusively in Digital 3-D, and it represented the first time in the history of motion pictures that a 3-D feature was created from an existing animated classic. An award-winning team of technicians and animators at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), in collaboration with In-Three Inc., helped Disney to convert the film from 2-D to 3-D by creating a new right eye image (by animating digitized versions of the original puppet characters and projecting footage of the sets onto dimensional geometry).

First released in 1993, Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" was directed by Henry Selick ("James and the Giant Peach"), and based on a story and characters by Tim Burton. The film follows the earnest-but-misguided adventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown's beloved Pumpkin King, as he attempts to take over the Christmas holiday. Against the advice of Sally, a lonely rag doll who has feelings for him, Jack enlists three mischievous trick-or-treaters - Lock, Shock, and Barrel - to help him kidnap Santa Claus.

Jack eventually realizes his mistake but has to contend with the evil Oogie Boogie before he can make things right and restore the Christmas holiday. Fueled by an unforgettable Grammy-nominated soundtrack featuring songs by Oscar® nominee Danny Elfman, Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" in Disney Digital 3DTMpromises to be fun for the whole family.

Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson El Presidente

Cruise and  Nicholson To Team Up Again In "El Presidente"

Here's a truth we could handle: Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson sharing the big screen again.

The two A-listers, who famously squared off in a courtroom in the 1992 blockbuster "A Few Good Men," could be teaming and going on the run in "El Presidente," late-night writer Dan Goor's action comedy about a dedicated Secret Service agent assigned to protect a bumbling and degenerate ex-president.

Warner Bros. has made an offer to Nicholson for the presidential part, while Cruise has attached himself to the project as the agent, according to several people familiar with the film. The studio could not immediately be reached for comment.

The potential pairing of these top stars, which has piqued Hollywood in recent days, is also likely to tantalize fans. In Rob Reiner's "Men," Cruise, as lieutenant judge's advocate Daniel Kaffee, defends two court-martialed Marines and famously questions Nicholson's Col. Nathan Jessep, who volleys back with the classic line, "You can't handle the truth."

The Reiner movie became a cultural phenomenon and drew $243 million worldwide as well as a best picture Oscar nomination.

In "El Presidente," the Cruise and Nicholson characters, while opposites in temperament, wouldn't be antagonists — they'd actually be on the run together when a threat is made on the life of the ex-president. But Nicholson would get to play a colorful, flawed older man against Cruise's devoted idealist. Now that's a truth we've handled before.

Darren Aronofsky Offered Wolverine Sequel

Darren Aronofsky Offered Wolverine Sequel

We just  learned that 20th Century Fox today entered into negotiations with Darren Aronofsky to helm the sequel to last year's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but the director is still being offered other valuable consolation prizes by Warner Bros., like Tales From the Gangster Squad, a high-priority project that this blog told you about last week.

Back in August, Fox brass had been focusing on a handful of directors for Wolverine 2, including Twilight Saga: Eclipse director David Slade and Red director Robert Schwentke. At the time, Fox had actually considered Aronofsky its top choice, as had its star, Hugh Jackman: The pair had collaborated on Aronofsky's ambitious 2006 movie, The Fountain, and are said to still have a close relationship today.

And despite the financial failure of Fountain, Fox bosses were impressed by Aronfsky's willingness to work frugally on smaller movies and still get big results: Aronofsky directed Mickey Rourke to an Oscar nomination with Fox Searchlight's The Wrestler, and is generating similar Oscar murmurs for Natalie Portman's turn as a sapphic, deranged, self-touching, wing-sprouting ballerina in Fox Searchlight's forthcoming Black Swan.

Until last weekend, though, Aronofsky was far more interested in directing WB's original take on Superman — in which Clark Kent is a journalist traveling the world trying to decide if he should, in fact, even become Superman — than doing a sequel like Wolverine 2. But on Saturday, Aronofsky was informed by WB he was out of the running for Man of Steel, and suddenly directing a sequel didn't seem so bad. Today, his reps began negotiations with Fox to put him behind the camera for Wolverine 2.

But wait!

Even as Aronofsky's Wolverine 2 talks coalesce at Fox, Warner Bros. is still offering blandishments to get back into business. We're told by knowledgeable insiders the reason Warner Bros. picked Snyder for Man of Steel is that the script by David Goyer was rushed, is still a bit of a mess, and that Warner Bros. needs someone who won't spend months or even years trying to get it just right (i.e. Aronofsky), because time is the one thing they don't have: The studio must have a new Superman movie in production by 2011 or they'll be subject to potential lawsuits by the heirs of the superhero's creators.

We're told that Snyder was not really Warner's first choice to direct Superman, but that a director needed to be hired imminently. Privately, even Snyder has confided to agency sources that the current Superman script needs work, but clearly Warner Bros. believes he can get it done faster than Aronofsky.

And so, back to Aronofsky: Last week, we told you all about Warner Bros.' efforts to light a fire under Tales From the Gangster Squad, a 1940s LAPD cops-and-robbers drama that the studio offered to Ben Affleck to direct in the afterglow of The Town. We hear that Affleck has since passed on Gangster Squad (he was also offered Superman, by the way, and he turned that down, too) and now Warner Bros. is offering Aronofsky's reps Gangster Squad as well.

No word on which project Aronofsky will settle on, though we're told that Wolverine sequel has the edge — at least for now.

Emma Stone Confirmed For Spider-Man Reboot

Emma Stone To Play Gwen Stacy In Spider-Man Reboot

Emma Stone has been cast as the female lead in the upcoming Spider-Man film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures.Stone has been tapped for the role of Gwen Stacy opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. The film, to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, will begin production in December and will be released in theaters nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.

The casting continues an association between Sony Pictures Entertainment and the actress, who previously starred in Superbad, The House Bunny, and Zombieland, all for Columbia Pictures; she may currently be seen in Screen Gems’ hit comedy Easy A, and takes a cameo role in Screen Gems’ upcoming Friends with Benefits.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, “It’s been an incredible journey for us to watch Emma’s star rise as an actress. She is extraordinarily talented and has a very special on-screen spark that is perfect for this role. Given her history with the studio, casting her in one of our most important franchises is a real thrill.”

Webb added, “The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde.”

Emma Stone can currently be seen starring in Screen Gems’ hit comedy Easy A. Next year, she will star in Warner Bros.’ Crazy, Stupid, Love opposite Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling and in The Help, the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling novel; she also takes a cameo role in Screen Gems’ Friends with Benefits and will voice a role in DreamWorks Animation’s comedy The Croods. Stone’s recent credits include Paperman, Zombieland, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, The House Bunny, The Rocker, and Superbad.

Mark Ruffalo Talks Hulk & Avengers Film

Mark Ruffalo Talks Hulk & Avengers Film

Mark Ruffalo talked to Empire recently about his new film The Kids Are All Right, and gave us a little on his role as Bruce Banner, and his big green alter-ego the Hulk, in the forthcoming Avengers movie - and possibly a few more besides.

"They set up several pictures over a couple of years and possibly there will be a Hulk movie. There'll probably be a couple more Avengers too, which would be fun."

"The way I see it, Edward Norton has bequeathed this role to me. I reckon the part is my generation's Hamlet, and there's still some room for interpreting who The Hulk is."

His views on the original 1970s show may give us a clue as to his take on the character too. "Growing up I'd rush home to watch my favourite show. You had the main character, played by Bill Bixby, and he had this calming quality to him. I watched it again recently, and it was so different from anything on TV at the time. You could really see the character struggling with the human aspect of what was happening."

Tony Gilroy To Direct The Bourne Legacy

Tony Gilroy To Direct The Bourne Legacy

Universal Pictures is making a deal with Michael Clayton helmer Tony Gilroy to direct a fourth installment of The Bourne Identity. Gilroy was hired to write the script back in June. This signals that the picture -- tentatively titled The Bourne Legacy -- is on a clear forward track, though it doesn't answer the question of whether Matt Damon will return to reprise his signature character of the amnesiac assassin/agent Jason Bourne. Damon last indicated that he wouldn't come back unless director Paul Greengrass helmed what would have been his third installment, after Greengrass exited the picture in a huff when the studio began developing it while Greengrass and Damon were making Universal's Green Zone. I'm told that Universal plans to make the film, even if it has to replace Damon, who'd be crazy to give up his franchise character and a huge paycheck if the script is any good.

There is every reason to think it will be, since Gilroy's writing has provided the spine for the first three pictures. Gilroy goes back to the beginning: He deconstructed a dense Robert Ludlum spy thriller down to its essence of a man who can't remember his past, who doesn't want to kill, but will have to in order to find out the truth. Even though some think Gilroy misfired with Duplicity with Julia Roberts and Clive Owen, his Michael Clayton was superb, and he knows the Bourne franchise better than any filmmaker the studio could have brought in. Doug Liman directed the first film, Greengrass the next two.

The picture will be produced by Frank Marshall, along with Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith of Captivate Entertainment. Bourne had originally been earmarked for 2012, but right now a clear timetable hasn't been locked in. The picture is a giant priority for Universal, and Donna Langley and Peter Cramer have been working hard to make it happen. The studio has recently been making some big bets, including an adaptation of HP Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness that will team director Guillermo del Toro and producer James Cameron, and it just paid $1.5 million against $3 million for the Evan Daugherty script Snow White and the Huntsmen, with Rupert Sanders attached to direct and Joe Roth producing. While Uni has completed a fifth installment of The Fast and the Furious, Bourne is its real franchise gem, outside of getting Steven Spielberg back for another Jurassic Park.
