Soundtrack Review: 'Arrow Season 4'

Like the series, Arrow: Season 4 Original Television Soundtrack offers a mixed quiver.

Review by Matt Cummings

If any of you found Arrow: Season 4 to be...well...a little boring, you're not alone. I've always appreciated the gritty street drama of Star City, and Actor Steven Amell is fantastic as the titular hero. But the series under Producer Greg Berlanti has declined since the amazing Season 2 (remember Slade?!), with too many love stories and far too many episodes. The biggest complaint I had with Season 4 was that Arrow was now fighting fantastic (and unbeatable) villains, something better suited for (better) shows like The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. Moreover, a paternity story slowed down any inertia which the show was building, leading to a wild League-esque battle royale that set up Legends. Composer Blake Neely's Arrow: Season 4 Original Television Soundtrack suffers from the same lack of direction, serving as more of a setup album than establishing itself as a must-buy.

With the formidable Ra's al Ghul (Matt Nable) defeated in Season 3, Oliver Queen/Arrow (Amell) hopes to restart his life, driving off into the sunset with Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards). But Diggle, Thea, and Laurel are having a hard time adjusting to life without him. They need his leadership to keep Team Arrow afloat, but Oliver is ready to move back to a more normal life. All of that changes when the dangerous magician Damien Darhk (Neil McDonough) arrives to destroy Star City, forcing Oliver to suit up once again. But he's unprepared for the chaos Darhk will bring, and soon recruits old friends like The Flash (Grant Gustin) and new heroes such as Hawkman and Hawkgirl to battle Darhk. Without knowing it, Oliver is thrust into the middle of an escalating conflict that will see million of lives precariously hang in the balance, while one of his friends will pay the ultimate price for his decisions.

The 23-song track by La-La Land Records is all over the place in terms of effect. We have the very good My Whole World Exploded / Savage Fight, Ghost Takedown, Fighting Ghosts and Resurrected and Infected, which establish themselves using familiar Neely DNA but add newer tones like more chanting and sound effects. His trademark style is apparent throughout, even when the ballads like the passionate For Better or Worse arrive, mixing hallmark strings and piano with electronic keyboards to build multiple layers. It's a very strong and beautiful track, but it also sounds like material we've heard before, simply re-arranged just enough to make it seem newer. Sometimes that plan works very well, such as Taking a Hand, in which Neely uses the unusual Duduk wind instrument to great effect. The very good Darhk Showdown and Not Black and White round things out, but along the way you'll start to notice a pattern where things can start to grate a bit.

Season 4 doesn't start off that well either, such as the dull Return to Star City / Darhkness Arrives and Beyond Saving. Not every song needs to be an amazing one, but soon everything from these series begins to blend together and it's impossible to remember anything other than the gold-standard Storming the Castle from Season 3. Let Each Other Go is another example of outright borrowing from a previous season. But if you're willing to look past it and appreciate others like Code Names, Thea Has Bloodlust, and a little tympani action in Genesis - because who doesn't love a track with tympanis - you'll find yourself adding more than a couple to your SuperHero playlist. Just be sure to add a few of these as they're shorter set up pieces.

Scoring for television isn't an easy gig, many times forcing a composer to use familiar (and even previously-used) material for its beat. But Arrow: Season 4 Original Television Soundtrack offers us enough new to equal out what's starting to feel like retreaded melodies. If Season 5's music is any indication where Neely is going, prepare for more of the same.

Arrow: Season 4 Original Television Soundtrack is now available on CD and digital download.

Movie Review: #Inferno

Can Tom Hanks and Ron Howard resurrect Robert Langdon in Inferno?

Review by Matt Cummings

For a film series that inexplicably took seven years off, Dan Brown's controversial The da Vinci Code franchise - if it could be labeled that - it's assumed that the newest entry Inferno would come at us full of codes, history, and deep conspiracies. Unfortunately, we get a muddled mess that diminishes the main character's cryptographic genius and reminds us of a world that seems eerily similar to Brown's.

Harvard professor Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) awakens in an Italian hospital with amnesia and deep cut on his head, prone to fits of horrifying visions about an oncoming apocalypse filled with historical themes and deadly characters. But before he gain his senses, he's instantly the target of a shadowy organization, forcing Doctor Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) to assist with his escape. Langdon soon realizes that his possession of an ancient painting is a prelude to discovering the whereabouts of a devastating virus called Inferno. Created by billionaire Bertrand Zobrist (Ben Foster), Inferno is the answer to the world's overpopulation and its ignorance of the effect on the planet. Forced into yet another game of code breaking and historical re-interpretation, Langdon must battle his unwinding mental health to discover Inferno's location before a population purge larger than The Black Death can be unleashed.

If The da Vinci Code and (to a different degree) Angels and Demons excelled in their establishment of this slightly-twisted universe, Inferno should have been nothing less than an emphatic pronouncement of its glorious past. Instead, we're force-fed a tour of historical European religious interest spots, only to be told, "This isn't the right place!" with a sudden departure to another ancient city, and so on. This happens more than once, with very little puzzle solving to elevate the strictly thriller/action aspects. Sure, the visuals are slick and Langdon's nightmares are frightening, but there's nothing beneath the surface. It's as if the dark cloud that's enveloped our divided society has also managed to poison the script by David Koepp's screenplay before one moment of it was shot. But that imagery of Hell come to life is impressive, including Langdon's other visions, and it's a saving grace to what's a jumbled story and a totally different ending than the book.

Unlike Marvel's Captain America Civil War, which took liberties with the source material to craft a mesmerizing experience, Inferno barely keeps our attention and axes a potentially terrific ending that Brown originally concocted with one that cheats the source material. If Brown's desire was to bend Church and historical fact to electrifying heights, Inferno never gets off the ground. Koepp's script ignores past films - even though Inferno is the latest - never referencing either of Langdon's potentially miracle acts. In a time when audiences expect to see newer movies in a series bridge to other older ones, Inferno does a pretty poor job.

After three films, Hanks effortlessly gifts Langdon with a bit of Indiana Jones and Benjamin Gates, creating an agreeable historical drink. To the series' strength, Hanks has never lost sight of this conflicted genius, but Inferno doesn't give him much of a soul to play with, and even the emotive Hanks (who delivered a memorable ending in da Vinci) is forced into a reactionary corner for most of Inferno . After a strong start, Jones sees her character decline as well, becoming nothing more than a radical who sees violent change as the only way to bring an end to overpopulation. Her intentions are never satisfyingly resolved, and neither is her complicity. Somehow, Foster has never quite held the mainstream lens as effectvely as his more independent roles (see X-Men: The Last Stand). Here, Zobrist is poorly drawn: he's nothing more than a sociopath who sees wholesale slaughter in purely black and white terms, spewing rhetoric that seems as a unethical and familiar as those playing in our current political environment. It's hard not to see the comparisons emerge, although I'm sure Director Ron Howard could not have foreseen them.

Howard, who's admitted in recent years of his desire to direct in relative safely, has thankfully emerged from that, delivering a thrillride in Rush and at several points a frightening edge in Inferno. But he never pushes the acting in the way he graced da Vinci or even Angels and Demons. He' grown as a director, but with the dud In the Heart of the Sea only a year ago, it seems like the director of Apollo 13 (another Hanks vehicle) has hit a genuine slump. Composer Hans Zimmer reworks his passionate da Vinci Code orchestrations, modifying them into the electronic realm with some interesting background elements. But just like the film itself, we're compelled to point out much better efforts from the past year. Brown's books feed on our desire for the controversial and the conspiratorial, but it now seems as if we're living in his world. Perhaps that's why things feel so complacent here, as if nothing in his books isn't something we haven't already seen.

In the end, Inferno misses the point about the stories surrounding some of our most ancient cities, choosing to move Langdon from one city to another without giving us much time to enjoy his acumen. The side story with Elizabeth Sinskey (Sidse Babett Knudsen) is only moderately charming and actually forces us to consider Langdon the Lover in the most haphazard way possible. That doesn't make for good theater, especially when our story is meant to challenge our mind instead of making us wonder why we wasted 2 hours on this incoherent mess. Inferno might be the last Brown film for awhile - certainly with Hanks - as it feels like the franchise needs to consider its place in a world that seems more like the books that garnered Brown so much attention.

Inferno is rated PG-13 for sequences of action and violence, disturbing images, some language, thematic elements and brief sensuality and has a runtime of 121 minutes.

Movie Review: AMERICAN PASTORAL

Not as solid as it should be

RAMA is back.

Ewan McGregor’s feature directorial debut, AMERICAN PASTORAL, is a decent effort at best, but at the end of the day, this feels more fitting as television series on HBO rather than a movie. This is a film that has enough shocker in its dialogue to create further conversations but you can’t help feeling that so many things were left out that should’ve been kept instead.

Based on Philip Roth’s novel, scripted by John Romano, the story is set in 1968 where Ewan McGregor’s character, a hardworking man named Seymour, witnesses his middle class life fall apart as the community is stricken by racial tension and his daughter, Merry (Dakota Fanning) gets influenced by radical political views that threatens to destroy their family. For a book that was published in the ‘90s and a story that’s set in the ‘60s, Philip Roth’s AMERICAN PASTORAL sure resonates with today’s societal and political climate, especially the anger and the hatred that young people have towards certain politicians, I’m not saying their anger isn’t justified, but just like the case of Merry, you wonder if they’re just being fed information by certain groups and the media or if they’ve really truly done their homework. And then there’s the racial tension that’s clearly still going on today. Which goes to show that unfortunately, history does repeat itself.

But that’s the problem with this film, the story makes you want to read the book because the film leaves a lot to be desired. I commend the performances of all the actors across the board, Jennifer Connelly as the disturbed wife, Dakota Fanning as the radicalized daughter, this is by far Fanning’s best performance yet, and I also admire the production design and the costume, and of course, any movie that has a score composed by Alexandre Desplat, is a movie worth sitting through,.. but I just feel like that so much of the meat and bone of the story gets relegated to just descriptions. AMERICAN PASTORAL does however have a Basic Instinct-esque scene involving the very daring young talent, Valorie Curry, a scene that will definitely keep you wide awake and alert, but for the most part, you can sense that a lot gets lost in the adaptation. I understand that the filmmakers want to focus on the father-daughter aspect, which is completely fine in my book, but even that aspect could’ve been more complex, more layered, but the film just isn’t able to go there.

Rambo Reboot Titled: Rambo: New Blood

THR is reporting One man army John Rambo is poised for a return the big-screen.

Nu Image/Millennium Films is plotting a reboot of the classic 1980s action franchise that starred Sylvester Stallone, tapping Brooks McLaren to pen the script and Ariel Vromen to direct the feature.

Titled Rambo: New Blood, the new reboot would not see Stallone return as the action hero, like he did in Millennium’s 2008 outting, but would see a younger actor inhabit the role. The company is looking at Rambo as a character akin to James Bond.

Rambo was the lead character in a 1972 novel by David Morrell titled First Blood. Hollywood adapted the book into the hit 1982 movie that starred Stallone in a story that despite its action trappings looked at issues facing disaffected Vietnam War vets. (It also veered from the book by having its protagonist live at the end of the story.)

When the series returned, with 1985’s Rambo: First Blood Part II, it was tapping into go-go 1980s America, with a script co-written by James Cameron. It was a pure high-adrenaline action movie with Rambo getting revenge, star and stripes style, on the Vietnamese. Stallone was at a zenith, the movie was unbeatable at the box office, and the character entered pop culture’s list of cinematic icons.

Rambo III, released in 1988, was a drop in quality and box office, and the character was dormant until Stallone resuscitated him for 2008’s Rambo.

No plot details were given for the new film as the project is still in early development.

McLaren has been working steadily in the action sphere since writing How It Ends, a post-apocalyptic survival tale which was on the 2010 Black List. Among his project is Line of Sight, an action thriller which Ben Affleck is developing for Warner Bros. He is repped by Verve and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

Vroman is a Millennium favorite, having directed The Iceman, the 2012 crime drama that starred Michael Shannon and Winona Ryder, and Criminal, a Ryan Reynolds-Gal Gadot thriller released this year, for the company.

The land’s 38 harvests have seen the arrivals and departures of three wives and four children, leaving Peter with only animals and memories. He is a tragedian on a stage it has taken him most of his life to build, and which now threatens to collapse from under him. The Incredibles 2 & Toy Story 4 Swap Release Date

THR is reporting The two Pixar films are swapping release dates.

Disney has changed release dates for two high-profile Pixar sequels.

The Incredibles 2 will now hit theaters on June 15, 2018, while Toy Story 4 will hit theaters on June 21, 2019. The two films are swapping dates due to an accelerated production schedule for Incredibles 2, according to Disney insiders.

Oscar-winning director Brad Bird is helming Incredibles 2, the follow-up to his hit 2004 film that grossed north of $633 million globally following its early November launch, including $70.4 million domestically, the second-biggest opening at the time for an animated title.

The mid-June corridor has always been a favorite landing place for Pixar movies. Toy Story 3 debuted on June 18, 2010, on its way to earning a record-breaking $1.067 billion at the global box office, becoming the first animated movie to join the billion-dollar club, not accounting for inflation. (Disney Animation Studios' Frozen and Zootopia and Pixar's Finding Dory, along with Universal and Illumination Entertainment's Minions, would later become members of that club as well).

Pixar has been cautious when it comes to making sequels. Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger announced the Incredibles 2 sequel in March 2014, a full decade after the first film played in theaters.

HACKSAW RIDGE Premiere Images

HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss [Andrew Garfield] who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The film also stars Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, and Vince Vaughn.
