Don Jon Review. Read Why Don Jon Is Not On Anyone's Radar, But Absolutely Should Be

Don Jon Review
By: MattInRC

If you've ever known someone from the East Coast, you'll know they operate with a more...honest nature. If they're in a bad mood, they tell you; if they love you, it's unconditional and usually followed by a crushing hug. For those of us transplants whose overly-gracious nature is missed on West Coast folks, it can be a difficult adjustment. For those West Coasters who might stumble upon the terrific comedy Don Jon, you're in for a schooling on East Coast Attitude 101. Hilarious, irreverent, and totally on the edge of good taste, Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial acumen will also impress with great performances about a guy with two sexual obsessions.

Jon (Levitt) is a classic New Jersey boy obsessed with sleeping with as many women as possible. Young and filled with an over-inflated view of himself, Jon and his buddies troll the bars assigning numbers to women before hitting on them. Jon definitely gets the best of this game, fornicating with dozens of ladies but never quite happy with the results. You see, his other obsession - watching porn - consumes his post-philandering activities. He spends hours trolling the Internet for unrealistic clips of women bowing to man's every whim, while his real-life experiences never quite match up. Soon, he meets the 'dime' Barbara (Scarlet Johansson), who won't get freaky with him until he makes a few changes. Gone are evenings out with the guys, as are any events in which her increasingly demanding needs aren't being met. She also wants Jon to go to school, and so he ends up in a boring college class seated next to the much-older Ester (Julianne Moore), who too often breaks out in tears, making Jon wonder why he's drawn such an unlucky straw. As he struggles to keep his obsession of porn away from Barbara, Jon's over-reactive parents (Glenne Headly and the A-shirted Tony Danza) relish in the idea that their son has finally grown up. But temptation is never too far away; can Jon stay on course with Barbara, or will his 'activities' catch up with him?

If you remember our affection for 2012's independent hilarity in For a Good Time, Call... you'll know how much we love off-the-wall comedies. What takes Jon to a new level is its actors: Levitt is outstanding as a Jersey Shore who finds himself in front of his computer too often, while Johansson creates the perfect diva for the big screen. Their interactions feel real, as do those of his family who remind me of the boisterous atmosphere of my Brooklyn youth. Headly's hilarious over-reactions to Jon's situations are as honest as any New Jersian, New Yorker, or Rhode Islander I've ever met, but it's Levitt's sex-addicted Jon who's the ringleader of this affair. From Looper to Inception, Levitt seems able to seamlessly insert and immerse himself in his roles, becoming that person and not merely inhabiting them. And while character actors are sometimes scorned by a disconnected Hollywood, those who do it best make everything they touch that much better. Levitt is also an excellent director, using the camera to innovate rather than to follow in someone else's footsteps. His unique angles, along with Editor Lauren Zuckerman's offbeat selections of pornographic content, make for a weird mix that's instantly and strangely entertaining. Some will no doubt be grossed out by the sheer amount of sex in Don Jon, but don't rail on the cast and crew who mostly rise to the occasion.

The problem here is Moore, whose older motherly role doesn't make sense for Jon. A former stunning leading lady, Moore seems confined here to a somewhat impactful secondary role. True, her character is meant to be plain and grieving, but I think Levitt goes too far in trying to make it work and ultimately picks the wrong actress. Their burgeoning relationship just doesn't make sense for a guy obsessed with porn, distraught over the breakdown in his relationship and struggling to find himself. While an extra 5 minutes of expository would have cleared that up, it's Moore whose casting doesn't quite work. But this minor issue won't be the reason why audiences might skip Don Jon, as it's definitely an independent comedy deserving your attention. The characters are enjoyable, their situations ridiculous, and West Coast crowds will finally get to see a real Italian household at dinnertime.

The weird and wacky Don Jon is not for everyone for obvious reasons. It's crass and disgusting, but at its heart Joseph Gordon-Levitt has produced a winner. I hope audiences take a chance on films like these, Rush, and The World's End, because it's here that mainstream and innovative can happily co-exist. For now, add this film to your list, and check any inhibitions at the door. You'll love yourself for doing so...but hopefully not like Jon 'loves' himself. Don Jon is rated R for...well...everything and has a runtime of 90 minutes.

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron Comic-Con Teaser Trailer

Epic tidings, web people. The Comic-Con teaser for The Avengers: Age Of Ultron is finally online and, lo, it is LOUD. Adjust your expectations, because there's zero actual footage here - they haven't started filming yet and that would be magic beyond even Marvel's powers - but there is plenty of excitement and portent crammed into these few short seconds.

Grim tidings for poor Iron Man, whose helmet is crunched slowly into Ultron's evil robot bonce. There's also a reminder in those snippets of Avengers dialogue that the crew don't get along that well and have scattered to the four winds. "They’ve gone their separate ways,” Maria Hill tells Nick Fury. “They’ll come back,” Fury replies. “Because we’ll need them to.”

We will. Age Of Ultron will see Tony Stark and the gang taking on a brand new threat torn from the pages of Marvel comic lore and given a spit-and-polish origin story for the big screen. Ultron (James Spader) is a criminally insane, sentient robot dedicated to conquest and the extermination of humanity. He comes loaded with powers, including strength, agility, stunning intelligence, a rage-filled loathing for our heroes and an intent to destroy them. By the looks of this snippet, it's all Tony Stark's fault too, since he's apparently the robot's creator.

With Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, and most likely Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner back, the new cast will also, possibly, include Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

Gordon Returns To Gotham

In one of the biggest drama deals this season, after a bidding war, Fox has landed Gotham, from Warner Bros. TV and The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller, with a series commitment. For Gotham, Warner Bros TV is mining one of DC Comics‘ most popular character universes, Batman. It explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains who made Gotham City famous. In Gotham, Gordon is still a detective with the Gotham City Police Department and has yet to meet Batman, who will not be part of the series. The Gordon character was introduced in 1939 in the very first Batman comic. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Commissioner Gordon has appeared in comic books as well as Batman films and series, including in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, where he was played by Gary Oldman. Along with the Superman franchise, the Batman universe is probably the most prized DC property.

While Superman spawned the long-running series Smallville, this is the first series featuring a character from the world of Batman in a very long time as WBTV had been exploring a Gotham City-set show for more than a year. It is the second high-profile WBTV/DC drama in the works for next season, along with Flash at the CW. In addition to Gotham,

New Gravity Featurette

"Gravity" is just a little more than a week away from blowing the world's collective mind, so if you aren't already looking forward to the new masterpiece from Alfonso Cuaron, you better start now. Soon it won't be as cool to love "Gravity" because everyone will already be talking about it, so get on it!

A new featurette from AMC Theatres does a good job at previewing the movie without give too much away, but if you're totally spoiler-phobic, it's best to stay away from pretty much any promotional material for "Gravity." You should just find your nearest IMAX screen and see it the day that it opens.

One of the dozen or so revolutionary things that "Gravity" does is find an actual purpose for 3-D. It's not overdone. When Cuaron does use it, he does so in a meaningful way that communicates space. A wrench will fly just out of someone's grasp or space debris will cloud their area. It's enough to make you forget how much you hate 3-D.

"Gravity" opens on October 4.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 Review. Film Is Too Dam Cute To Hate

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 Review
By: MattInRC

The likeable Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is too damn cute to hate. No joke.

Director Cody Cameron's film about food gone horribly awry is sweet, fun entertainment that doesn't pretend to be anything more than what it is. What that is, a movie about food that takes on human attributes, will make you mostly hungry throughout, but will definitely entertain with its cheesiness. Scenes of greasy burgers, sushi, fruits, and deserts perpetuate the environment as scientist Flint Lockwood (voiced by Bill Hader) attempts to fix his invention which has turned Shadow Falls into a place where food is alive. Almost everyone is back for the sequel, except for Mr. T's police officer Earl Devereaux (voiced by Terry Crews). Lockwood now works for LIVE Corp, an Apple-like business run by Lockwood's idol Chester V (voiced by Will Forte), who wants the boy's invention - called a FLDSMDFR - for his own evil plans. Soon, the two are locked in a struggle to secure it while giant tacos with legs and watermelon elephants chase Lockwood and his friends. Simple as that.

Cloudy is so damn cute and cheesy - with its silly food references - that you can't help but like it. For the parents, it's mostly the adult jokes that will keep you awake, but there's also a father/son storyline and Flint's burgeoning relationship with Sam Sparks (voiced by Anna Faris). None of this is Oscar worthy, but the animation is solid and the jokes roll across the screen a Lazy Susan delivering a continuous selection of food. The voice cast - which includes James Caan and Andy Samberg - does a nice job of bouncing off Hader and Forte. Each actor brings a depth to their characters that we never got from duds like Turbo and Planes; granted, this is a sequel and the actors have gotten better with their characters, but the casting is just better here. Writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein weave a zany and fun-filled affair that never takes itself too seriously.

The suggestion that food can talk is ridiculous by definition, and so one automatically has to check the same expectations at the door that one does for The Muppets. Once you do so, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is enjoyable, turn-off-your-brain fun, although your stomach might hate you for sticking it through. It's rated PG for mild rude humor and has a runtime of 95 minutes.

Gerard Butler Wants A Piece Of Gods Of Egypt

The pantheon for Alex Proyas’ new project, Gods Of Egypt, appears to be growing by one. After playing a Spartan king in 300 and saving the President of the United States in Olympus Has Fallen, Gerard Butler wants to become a deity in the film. Well, they say you should dream big…

Butler is in talks to play Set, the god of the desert, storms and foreigners in the Egyptian mythology. If he does sign, he’ll be getting violent, killing and mutilating his own brother, Osiris. It's all part of his dastardly plan to murder their father, Ra. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Geoffrey Rush has signed on for that role.

His murderous ways bring Set into direct conflict with Osiris’ son, Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), who teams up with Hathor, the goddess of love, and a human thief, to seek vengeance. Leonidas vs. Jamie Lannister? This could be one heck of a rumble.

Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama are writing the script and Proyas is guiding this one through development. With casting starting to heat up, it sounds like it’s moving along nicely, though no one should forget that the director got even further along than this with Paradise Lost before it collapsed. Still, Summit Entertainment seems to be firmly behind Gods, so we’d expect the cameras to be cranking soon enough.

Rush Review. The Film Delivers The Danger Of Formula 1 Racing Right To Us, & We're All The Better For It.

Rush Review
By: MattInRC

September continues to impress with the high-octane drama Rush.

Apollo 13 director Ron Howard once again writes the book on real-life heroism, producing a compelling and exhilarating study of one of the most famous Formula 1 race car rivalries of the 1970's. An often deadly affair, this sport swallowed up both men and corporations determined to own the road. But what the sport needed was a rivalry to match the menacing machines that sometimes won the day. Enter the British driver James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and his nemesis Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl), both with wildly different styles but similarly determined to win. Lauda is a brilliant but misunderstood engineer/driver whose banker father looks down on his abilities, while Hunt is the cocky playboy who's as comfortable with his threesomes as he is on the racetrack. Neither likes each other from the start, but both see their careers in parallel as they peel off from the minor-league F3, straight into F1. Early on, it's Lauda's redesigned Ferrari that dominates Hunt's flawed McLaren, but he soon catches up, turning 1976 into one of the most memorable in the sport's history.

A film about this kind of brinkmanship needs more than a compelling race to keep our attention, and that layer arrives in the form of two women: Lauda's wife Marlene (Alexandra Maria Lara) and the model Suzy Miller (Olivia Wilde), whose marriage to Hunt creates its own ugly public rivalry. Even with these injections of story, it looks early on like Rush will spin out, as the Hunt/Lauda spat will be overtaken by 70's excesses. But when a horrific accident befalls one of them, the film soon matures into a story about the dedication of both men to see through the dangers inherent in F1 in an effort to emerge on top. The result grows on you, until at last one finds themselves cheering for two of the most unlikable men ever portrayed as heroes on the big screen. That's not a bad thing by any stretch.

Brilliantly shot by Director Ron Howard and Slumdog Millionaire Cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, Rush isn't here to merely occupy space but to exist, rumbling like the massive engines under the men who tried to contain them. Howard and team are in perfect form here, balancing visceral track scenes with plenty of powerful drama and small doses of humor, as Lauda and Hunt compete and hate on one another to our delight. There's also a gritty 70's feel to things - it's not just the costumes and scenery that Howard gets spot on, but the actual shooting effect he utilizes. We're wisked back to the graininess of the 70's (not something I care to do too often) instead of being forced to see it through the yes of a modern camera set up. Along with his direction acumen, Howard casts an unlikely but dynamic duo as his anti-heroes. In most situations, I would be hesitant to cast Brühl, but here he shines as the despised but overachieving competitor. He has a natural way of making you both dislike his arrogance but respect and even root for his success; the humble-looking Brühl portrays that swagger with a know-it-all mentality that comes off as totally enjoyable. Hemsworth seems to improve upon his resume with each film, delivering James Hunt with all the penache of a 70's alcoholic and party boy who can't keep still for his love of racing. The two play the opposites to near perfection, ready to punish one another on the course one minute, engage in some tongue lashing the next, then defend the other when F1 or a reporter asks something stupid.

The only thing keeping me from awarding it top honors is Writer Peter Morgan's treatment of the women, whom he seems content to display as either disposable love interests or who are limited to long woeful stares of their men, or glorified as playthings for Hunt to wrap his huge arms around. Even Maria Lara goes topless here, while Wilde's character disappears for long stretches in Acts 2 and 3.

I can't think of a recent film that has captured the thrill and danger of racing like Rush. In a world where high-profile crashes make headlines and fans pay hoping to see them, Howard has concocted a gripping product, even if some of the pieces feel a bit out of place. Bolstered by terrific performances and the pulsing power of Composer Hans Zimmer's soundtrack, it's an octane-induced thrill ride that will leave your knuckles white. Rush is rated R for sexual content, nudity, language, some disturbing images, and brief drug use and has a runtime of 123 minutes.

Minnie Driver Flies With The Blackbirds

There are two Blackbirds currently vying for your attention. One is a Hitchcockian conspiracy thriller directed by David Mamet and starring Cate Blanchett. The other is a music-biz romance coming together at Relativity, with Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Secret Life Of Bees) at the helm. It's the latter that concerns us this morning, with the news that Minnie Driver and rapper Machine Gun Kelly have both joined the cast. Danny Glover is already on board, along with Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Undercovers, Touch, Odd Thomas) and Nate Parker (Red Tails).

The film is about Noni Jean (Mbatha-Raw), a musician on the verge of superstardom who's buckling under the pressure and on the verge of suicide until her emotional life is turned around by local cop Kaz (Parker). Their parents urge them to put their careers before their relationship, but together they're able to break free from those controlling voices and find their own direction.

Driver will play Mbatha-Raw's pushy mom. MGK, making his movie debut in a role not a million miles from his own persona, will play Kid Cuprit, a rapper on Noni's label with whom she collaborates before going solo.

Terius Nash, AKA prolific singer-songwriter and producer The-Dream will be providing four new songs for the soundtrack. Ryan Kavanaugh (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Zombieland) and Stephanie Allain (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan) are among the producers, and the film is currently in production, with an eye on a release next year.

Fall Television Season Review. So Far

Verdict: Fall Television Season
By: MattInRC

Sometimes my boss here at SJF allows me to actually go home and enjoy small screen affairs. I know, reviewing 100 films last year takes a bit of the tan off, but so does watching as much television as I do. This year, the networks are making it even harder, especially with some seriously interesting new shows. As someone who only watches Over-the-Air programming, I have to say that 2013 looks at least on paper to be the most intriguing in several years. Welcoming back our favs Person of Interest, The Big Bang Theory, Arrow, and The Following has kept us busy, while several new shows (some of which with October and November premieres) means our DVR will be humming through Christmas. But, that also means some shows have got to go: goodbye NCIS: Los Angeles (too dull), Hawaii Five-O (Fridays - enough said), and 2 Broke Girls (Denning's boots don't make a show), while Revolution (potentially the most disappointing) could be our next victim. From superheroes to super creepy villains, we cover just a few must-sees, because we know you have a movie to catch!

Show: Sleepy Hollow (FOX)
Time: Mondays, 9PM
The Concept: Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) has been awakened hundreds of years after his death during the Revolutionary War to hunt down none other than the Headless Horseman, who is actually one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Crane teams up with local sheriff Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) to discover who awoke him and what The Four Horsemen intend to do in the little town of Sleepy Hollow.
The Verdict: If you're wondering how such a concept can possibly be entertaining, stop. It's fun, delicious horror mixed with just enough history and 'man out of time' moments to keep your attention. Star Trek: Into Darkness writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman know that audiences love historical dramas with good character development, and casting Mison gives the audience an instantly electric actor who can wash over even the most senseless aspects of this show. If anyone thinks that chasing former Redcoats around Upstate New York deserves any explanation, with its lead actor donning 18th Century clothing, go back and watch your Universe Blu-rays. We have no idea if this one will last, especially when Crane's 'lights on - lights off' shtick gets old, but we're prepared to see that issue resolved. Take a chance on this one.

Show: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (ABC)
Time: Tuesdays, 8PM
The Concept: Fresh off Marvel's mega-smash The Avengers, an elite team of human agents is assembled (no pun) to clean up their messes and deal with humanity's reaction to a new world of superheroes.
The Verdict: S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) is back to lead this strangely pretty cast, which includes Chloe Bennet as a computer hacker and bruiser/loner Grant Ward. Neither of them seem to have the acting chops nor the gravitas to handle Director Joss Whedon's interesting pilot, while Ming-Na Wen as the enigmatic Melinda May are strangely thrust back into working with Coulson without any character backfill. Some shows need time to develop, particularly with young cast members with zero personality. Bennet's Skye lives in her van yet somehow has perfect skin and lip gloss and can easily hack into S.H.I.E.L.D. databases, while non-household names Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge as scientists Fitz and Simmons are barely audible with their British accents. Still, there was plenty to like in the pilot to keep us interested, with plenty of winks to Avengers and even Iron Man 3. Rumors have surfaced of highly-suspect future scripts, generating all the wrong buzz for a show that's got a lot to prove. Marvel needs this show to succeed, both as a bridge to the upcoming slew of feature films, but also to prove Avengers fans can live without Avengers in their television show. And with a pilot that gets a little too Back to the Future for our tastes ('Roads? Who needs roads?'), can S.H.I.E.L.D. grow an audience that won't see Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, or Hulk on the small screen? I guess we'll find out.

We're also interested in Almost Human (November 4), Dracula (October 25), as well as Masters of Sex (September 29). But that's on Showtime, so unless someone is nice enough to give us their password, we'll stick to O-T-A.

What new shows are you watching, and which have you bid a fond farewell? Comment below and join the conversation!

NEED FOR SPEED Trailer Has Arrived

The new teaser trailer from DreamWorks Studios’ NEED FOR SPEED is now available on iTunes.

DreamWorks Pictures’ “Need for Speed” marks an exciting return to the great car culture films of the 1960's and 70's, when the authenticity of the world brought a new level of intensity to the action on-screen. Tapping into what makes the American myth of the open road so appealing, the story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country journey for our heroes -- one which begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, "Need for Speed" captures the freedom and excitement of the game in a real-world setting, while bringing to life the passion for the road that has made our love of cars so timeless.

The film centers around Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle-cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. Struggling to keep his family-owned garage afloat, he reluctantly partners with the wealthy and arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Bonet (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save Tobey's shop, a disastrous race allows Dino to frame Tobey for a crime he didn’t commit, sending Tobey to prison while Dino expands his business out west.

Two years later, Tobey is released and set on revenge -- but he knows his only chance to take down his rival Dino is to defeat him in the high-stakes race known as De Leon—the Super Bowl of underground racing. However to get there in time, Tobey will have to run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet that includes dodging pursuing cops coast-to-coast as well as contending with a dangerous bounty Dino has put out on his car. With the help of his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.

Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, “Need for Speed” captures the thrills of the game in a real-world setting. “Need for Speed” is presented by DreamWorks Pictures, produced by John Gatins, Pat O’Brien and Mark Sourian and directed by Scott Waugh. The screen story is by John Gatins and George Gatins and the screenplay is by George Gatins and John Gatins, based on the video game series created by Electronic Arts. The film releases in U.S. theaters on March 14, 2014.

Dom Hemingway Trailer Starring Jude Law

Shedding those improbable boyish handsomes with the glee of a cat shedding its winter coat, Jude Law is the boozy, jaundiced, just-a-bit-in-your-face anti-hero of Dom Hemingway, Richard Shepard's upcoming black comedy. He has a new trailer to share with you.

First impressions? Looks like a ride. Law is tackling this phase of his career with serious gusto, throwing himself into a range of nutsoid roles light years from pretty boys of his youth, and Hemingway is certainly one of those. The actor put on ten kilos for the role, a Coca-Cola diet that's been augmented by some ruthless snipping of the Law locks to create this cliff-top teeter of a character.

The going-to-seed Dom Hemingway, fresh from a 12-year stint in prison, heads to the south of France to collect what he's owed for keeping his mouth shut for former crime boss Mr Fontaine (Demián Bichir). Dickie (Richard E. Grant) is along for the ride and all seems hunky dory. Only Dom can't resist the old temptations - femme fatales, booze, shooters, other types of booze - and, sure enough, off the cliff he goes.

Star Wars: Rebels Gets It's Cast

While most eyes have been on the casting of Star Wars: Episode VII, another franchise player set in the galaxy far, far away has been quietly operating under the radar.

Star Wars: Rebels is the CGI-animated series being made by Lucasfilm Animation that will air on Disney XD.

THR/HeatVision has learned that David Oyelowo, Freddie Prinze Jr., Vanessa Marshall, Taylor Gray and Steven Jay Blum are in the process of being cast as the voice leads for the series, which will make its debut in fall 2014.

Little is known about the series other than it is set during the time period between the two trilogies, as the Empire expanded its reach and Luke Skywalker was growing up on Tatooine.

Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class), Dave Filoni, who worked on the previous Star Wars animated series Clone Wars, and Greg Weisman (Young Justice) are executive producing.

Oyelowo is currently starring as Forest Whitaker's son in Lee Daniel's surprise $100 million hit The Butler and is shooting Interstellar for Christopher Nolan. His name surfaced in connection to the Star Wars universe in a report by Latino Review -- although it had him pegged for the film side. (Not that this precludes him from any film appearance, by the way.)

Prinze is best-known for playing Fred in the live-action Scooby Doo movies but has done voice work for the Mass Effect video games. Sources have said Prinze is a big -- and genuine -- Star Wars fan.

Marshall has done of plenty of superhero voice work, notably as Black Canary in Young Justice, Black Widow in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and Wonder Woman in Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.

Gray is a relative newcomer to the voice scene and may be known for starring in Nickelodeon's short-lived show Bucket & Skinner's Epic Adventures.

Blum voiced Starscream in Hub Network's Transformers Prime as well as Lex Luthor in Flashpoint Paradox. He also works plenty in the video game world, with Call of Duty: Origins and God of War: Ascension among his credits.

When asked for comment, Lucasfilm said: "We don't have any casting announcements at the time but are excited about the series and look forward to sharing news with you in the future."

ROOM 237 Available On SundanceNow

Some movies are a mystery… others are an enigma. Are you ready to check into ROOM 237? An Official Selection at Sundance, Cannes and New York Film Festivals; Rodney Ascher's ROOM 237 peels back the mysteries buried deep inside Stanley Kubrick's still-controversial classic, The Shining. It's been over 30 years since the film first shocked audiences, yet many questions still remain. Could The Shining really have been about the Apollo 11 moon landing, the Holocaust, or even the genocide of the Native Americans? One film tries to unlock all of it's deepest secrets.

Head over to SundanceNow to see what lies behind the door of ROOM 237:

After the box office failure of Barry Lyndon, Stanley Kubrick decided to embark on a project that might have more commercial appeal. The Shining, Stephen King’s biggest critical and commercial success yet, seemed like a perfect vehicle. After an arduous production, Kubrick’s film received a wide release in the summer of 1980; the reviews were mixed, but the box office, after a slow start, eventually picked up. End of story? Hardly. In the 30 years since the film’s release, a considerable cult of Shining devotees has emerged, fans who claim to have decoded the film’s secret messages addressing everything from the genocide of Native Americans to a range of government conspiracies. Rodney Ascher’s wry and provocative Room 237 fuses fact and fiction through interviews with cultists and scholars, creating a kaleidoscopic deconstruction of Kubrick’s still-controversial classic.
