Movie Review: 'The Fifth Wave'

The alien invasion flick The Fifth Wave is YA cheesy nonsense.

Review by Matt Cummings

If there's one thing we've learned about the January box office, it's clear that the reason why many titles find their way here is well deserved. Take the alien invasion flick The Fifth Wave for example: its YA cheesy nonsense and blah finish on the tongue do nothing to strengthen the argument that the genre still has life left.

For mid-teen Cassie (Chloe Grace-Moretz), life is comfortable and filled with parties and typical boy-girl shenanigans, including her infatuation for quarterback Ben Parish (Nick Robertson). Of course, that all changes when a mysterious spacecraft suddenly appears over her Ohio home, eventually unleashing four waves of destruction: EMP bursts, earthquakes/floods, bird flu, and occupation. As Cassie sees her parents die one by one, a military officer (Liev Schreiber) takes Cassie's young brother and other children to a secret military base where he claims they'll be safe. But soon it's revealed that his intentions are not what they appear. As Cassie searches for Sam, she's rescued by the alien sympathizer Evan (Alex Roe) who helps her get on the secret base, only to learn that Sam has been drafted into the army. Struggling within a self-imposed love triangle, she must find her brother before The Fifth Wave destroys what's left of Earth.

The Fifth Wave is about as generic a film as you're going to see. There's the plucky teen who somehow can wage a war against an entire military complex, a half-baked love triangle, a dystopian future, and a twist at the end. If that all sounds familiar, it's because so many YA stories think romance can co-exist with explosions. But that's not the only problem with The Fifth Wave: it also suffers from an inability to actually scare anyone or place its leads into truly dangerous situations. Everyone here feels like they're covered in some sort of protective bubble of blow dryers, maniac agents, and makeup foundation. Once the main point finally arrives - that the aliens (called 'Others') don't understand love and that Evan turns because he instantly falls for Cassie - is ridiculous. I don't think the human race is going to survive in any film based on our love for one another. Moreover, it's impossible to assume that a bunch of 10-16 year-old kids are going to form a tight military troupe while they have no idea of their parent's location. If that really happened, those kids would need deep psychological counseling.

The Fifth Wave tests these limits of credibility often. If one could assume that aliens can navigate space, suspend a giant ship above Ohio, and travel in nearly-silent scout ships, then the chances of a pretty blonde being able to deftly navigate the forest without being snuffed out by said ships is impossible to accept. In the real world, an alien would just push a button and the girl would disappear. Roll credits. But, Director J. Blakeson doesn't do Cassie or anyone else here the justice they deserve, placing our actors in antagonist situations that are either too easy to spot or which lack the basic rules of science. He fails to get excellent performances from them, including an overly quiet Schreiber and an oddly-chosen Maria Bello as a lipsticked doctor with serious age lines in her forehead. In fact, it's the worst I've ever seen her.

Writers Susannah Grant (Insurgent) and Akiva Goldsman (The Amazing Spider-man 2) spend so much time setting things up that any sense of closure is not to be found. You'll have to wait until part 2 to gain any of that, and a poor opening could push that into oblivion. Neither of these writers are Hollywood heavies, and the YA cheesiness they dispense emanates in globs on the floor. Their lines actually encouraged open laughter with our test audience and other critics, so I know that my face-palming was more than justified.

The Fifth Wave fails to duplicate the scale or gravitas of a The Hunger Games and doesn't sell the dystopia like Oblivion or even The Maze Runner. Again, it's hard to see Moretz's Botox-ed lips and perfect hair struggling against aliens, love triangles, or even an original thought. Her arc is so straight forward that any humanity she's claimed has been lost feels more like someone who missed her own hair appointment. The lack of authenticity from any of the leads is palpable, and that's a problem almost as soon as the film starts. Then you realize that there's another 110 minutes of joy ahead. With another losing year in 2015, Sony Pictures is looking to get back in the game; perhaps next year they should pick films that people might actually like to see.

While it tries to fashion itself as a desired trilogy worthy of your dollars, The Fifth Wave is nothing more than YA cheesiness. Its poorly-chosen cast and big-budget blahs make it an instant candidate for why we hate January films so much. We don't expect to see a follow-up, and who could blame us? The Fifth Wave is just plain awful.

The Fifth Wave is rated PG-13 for violence and destruction, some sci-fi thematic elements, language and brief teen partying, and has a runtime of 112 minutes.

New #THEBFG Poster

From the human beans that brought you E.T and the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda comes The BFG!

The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part. Giants like Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) on the other hand, are twice as big and at least twice as scary and have been known to eat humans, while the BFG prefers Snozzcumber and Frobscottle. Upon her arrival in Giant Country, Sophie, a precocious 10-year-old girl from London, is initially frightened of the mysterious giant who has brought her to his cave, but soon comes to realize that the BFG is actually quite gentle and charming, and, having never met a giant before, has many questions. The BFG brings Sophie to Dream Country where he collects dreams and sends them to children, teaching her all about the magic and mystery of dreams.

Having both been on their own in the world up until now, their affection for one another quickly grows. But Sophie’s presence in Giant Country has attracted the unwanted attention of the other giants, who have become increasingly more bothersome. Says Spielberg, “It’s a story about friendship, it’s a story about loyalty and protecting your friends and it’s a story that shows that even a little girl can help a big giant solve his biggest problems.” Sophie and the BFG soon depart for London to see the Queen (Penelope Wilton) and warn her of the precarious giant situation, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants do indeed exist. Together, they come up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all.

Directed by three-time Academy Award® winner Steven Spielberg (“Bridge of Spies,” “Schindler’s List,” ”Saving Private Ryan”) from a screenplay by Melissa Mathison (“E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,” “The Black Stallion”) based on the best-selling novel by Roald Dahl, “The BFG” stars three-time Tony Award® and two-time Olivier Award winner Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies,” “Wolf Hall”), newcomer Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton (“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Downton Abbey”), Jemaine Clement (“Rio 2,” “The Flight of the Conchords”), Rebecca Hall (“The Gift,” “Iron Man 3”), Rafe Spall (“The Big Short,” “Prometheus”) and Bill Hader (“Inside Out,” “Trainwreck”). The film is produced by Spielberg, Frank Marshall (“Jurassic World,” “The Bourne Ultimatum”) and Sam Mercer (“Snow White and the Huntsman,” “The Sixth Sense”) with Kathleen Kennedy (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Lincoln”), John Madden (“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Shakespeare in Love”), Kristie Macosko Krieger (“Bridge of Spies,” “Lincoln”), Michael Siegel (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Rise of the Guardians”), Frank Smith and Naia Cucukov serving as executive producers.

Roald Dahl’s “The BFG” (Big Friendly Giant) was first published in 1982 and has been enchanting readers of all ages ever since. Dahl’s books, which also include “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach” and “Matilda,” are currently available in 58 languages and have sold over 200 million copies worldwide. Originally created as a bedtime story, “The BFG” was Dahl’s own favorite of all his stories. “It was very important for us to be loyal to the language,” says Spielberg, “and the great writer Melissa Mathison, who also wrote ‘E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,’ wrote ‘The BFG.’”

“The BFG” opens in U.S. theaters on July 1, 2016, the year that marks the 100th anniversary of Dahl’s birth.

Terminator Sequel Gets Terminated

After the disappointing box office results for Terminator Genisys last year, there was a lot of talk of recalibrating the attempted new trilogy. Now it appears Paramount is ready to put the brakes on even harder, removing the planned second film from its release schedule.

The next Terminator film, which didn't have a confirmed cast, director or writers, but had been hoping to kick off shooting this year, had been sitting on the company's schedule in the prime early summer slot of May 19, 2017. Hopes had been high that Genisys would launch a revived Terminator franchise, but the critical reaction and the low turnout ($89 million in the US, with a slightly healthier worldwide response thanks partly to China) didn't instill confidence. There may well still be movement on the Terminator front, especially as the rights revert to creator James Cameron in 2019, but for now Arnie and co. are in timeline limbo.

Still, Terminator's loss is Baywatch's gain, as the film version of the cult TV series that will star Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron and Alexandra Daddario is inheriting that May 2017 release date. The studio clearly feels that the comedy, which just added a new cast member, is a better bet to perform than a franchise that has been slowly shutting down.

Johnny Depp To Star In Triple Frontier.

Variety is reporting Johnny Depp may be returning to the dark corners of the smuggling world, this time in South America. The “Black Mass” actor is in early talks to star in Paramount’s crime thriller “Triple Frontier.

The studio had no comment.

Depp, who recently earned a SAG nomination for playing mobster Whitey Bulger in “Black Mass,” hasn’t yet committed to the project but is said to be engaged again in the organized crime thriller. The actor initially showed interest in the script when Kathryn Bigelow (“Zero Dark Thirty”) was involved. J.C. Chandor (“A Most Violent Year”) is now directing the film.

The long-gestating project, an ensemble thriller, also has an offer out to Tom Hanks. Will Smith had an offer but had to move on because of scheduling with his next film “Collatetal Beauty.”

Bigelow’s producing partner Mark Boal wrote the script with Charles Roven and Alex Gartner of Atlas Entertainment producing.

The film is set in the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil where the Iguazu and Parana rivers converge — making “la triple frontera” difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime.

Depp, who recently wrapped Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” has a handful of films set to bow in 2016 including Kevin Smith’s “Yoga Hosers,” which bows at Sundance and “Alice Through the Looking Glass.”

Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, and Angela Bassett are ready for action in the official poster for LONDON HAS FALLEN!

The sequel to the worldwide smash hit “Olympus Has Fallen,” a non-stop, suspenseful action thriller that delivers high-octane excitement through a heightened sense of authenticity. The only hope of stopping it rests on the shoulders of the President of the United States (Aaron Eckhart) and his formidable Secret Service agent (Gerard Butler), and an English MI-6 agent (Charlotte Riley) who rightly trusts no one. Morgan Freeman also stars as the Vice President of the United States.

Actress Kirsty Hill Kicks Off @Slamdance 's Opening Night Film, "Director's Cut"

Actress Kirsty Hill Kicks Off Slamdance's Opening Night Film, "Director's Cut"

Actress Kirsty Hill is sexing up "Director's Cut", a new comedy-horror film from director Adam Rifkin and Penn Jillette (Penn & Teller), with a starring turn as Summer in the film's opening sequence.

Hill co-stars alongside Jillette, Missi Pyle (“Gone Girl”), Harry Hamlin (“Mad Men”), Nestor Carbonell (“The Dark Knight”) and Lin Shaye (“There's Something About Mary").

The movie, which was made on a $1.1 million budget thanks to the filmmakers' crowdfunding efforts via FundAnything.com, is officially launching the 2016 Slamdance Film Festival Friday, January 22 in Park City, Utah.

"I'm very proud to be in this movie, and very excited that it has been selected to open Slamdance," said Hill. "It's a wild movie that I think will blow people's minds."

The Welsh-born blue-eyed actress has recently appeared in Sony Pictures’ “The Hungover Games”, Danny Glover’s “Bad Asses” and Marlon Wayans’ “A Haunted House 2”, and has four more films set for release later in 2016.

In "Director's Cut", Jillette - who also wrote and produced the film - plays a stalker who kidnaps his favorite movie actress (Pyle) and forces her to star in his movie. Rifkin's ("Detroit Rock City") playful direction hits all the right notes in this suspense-thriller.

#Anomalisa Featurettes: TINY THINGS

Go behind the scenes to see how tiny eyeballs and air freshners were crafted to create the world of Anomalisa.

Michael Stone, husband, father and respected author of "How May I Help You Help Them?" is a man crippled by the mundanity of his life. On a business trip to Cincinnati, where he's scheduled to speak at a convention of customer service professionals, he checks into the Fregoli Hotel. There, he is amazed to discover a possible escape from his desperation in the form of an unassuming Akron baked goods sales rep, Lisa, who may or may not be the love of his life. A beautifully tender and absurdly humorous dreamscape, from the brilliant minds of Charlie Kaufman (SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK) and Duke Johnson ("Community" episode, Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas), this stop-motion animation wonder features the vocal cast of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Noonan and David Thewlis and a stirring strings-based score by Carter Burwell. The darkly comedic and surreal stop-motion journey of a man's long night of the soul, ANOMALISA confirms Charlie Kaufman's place amongst the most important of American filmmakers, and announces Duke Johnson as a major creative force.

#THEFINESTHOURS HEROES FOR HEROES PROGRAM KICKS OFF In CHICAGO

THE FINEST HOURS” HEROES FOR HEROES PROGRAM KICKS OFF IN CHICAGO ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 19th

Screening Series to Honor Real-Life Heroes and Their Families

Walt Disney Studios announces “The Finest Hours” Heroes for Heroes program, a screening series designed to honor real-life heroes and their families sponsored by Visa Signature and Homewood Suites by Hilton.

The Heroes for Heroes program will provide military and first responders the chance to attend a screening of Disney’s upcoming heroic action-thriller “The Finest Hours.” Homewood Suites by Hilton, Visa Signature and Disney will travel across the country, stopping in 10 U.S. cities, to create these exclusive screening events.

Heroes for Heroes will kick-off with a screening in Chicago today, Tuesday, January 19, followed by screenings in Dallas, Philadelphia, Miami, Phoenix, Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis and Kansas City, wrapping up in Los Angeles on Monday, January 25, where the film’s premiere will take place in Hollywood at the TCL Chinese Theatre. The U.S. Coast Guard Band along with the U.S. Honor Guard will perform and officially open the red carpet, with 70 heroes from around the country (representing the Armed Forces, Veterans, Wounded Warriors and First Responders) attending the premiere courtesy of American Airlines and the Gary Sinise Foundation. The heroes will enjoy accommodations by Homewood Suites at a nearby hotel. American Airlines and Homewood Suites by Hilton are sponsors of the premiere.

About The Film:
“The Finest Hours” is the remarkable true story of the most daring rescue mission in the history of the Coast Guard. Presented in Digital 3D™, Real D 3D and IMAX® 3D, the film will transport audiences to the heart of the action, creating a fully-immersive cinematic experience on an epic scale. On February 18, 1952, a massive nor’easter struck New England, pummeling towns along the Eastern seaboard and wreaking havoc on the ships caught in its deadly path, including the SS Pendleton, a T-2 oil tanker bound for Boston, which was literally ripped in half, trapping more than 30 sailors inside its rapidly-sinking stern. As the senior officer on board, first assistant engineer Raymond Sybert (Casey Affleck) soon realizes it is up to him to take charge of the frightened crew and inspire the men to set aside their differences and work together to ride out one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast. Meanwhile, as word of the disaster reaches the U.S. Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts, Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) orders a daring operation to rescue the stranded men. Despite overwhelming odds, four men, led by Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine), set out in a wooden lifeboat with an ill-equipped engine and little, if any, means of navigation, facing frigid temperatures, 60-foot high waves and hurricane-force winds.

Disney’s “The Finest Hours” is the unforgettable story of the Coast Guard’s courageous mission, which is directed by Craig Gillespie and stars: Chris Pine; Academy Award® and Golden Globe® nominee Casey Affleck; Ben Foster; Holliday Grainger; John Ortiz; and Eric Bana. Produced by Jim Whitaker, p.g.a., and Dorothy Aufiero, p.g.a., the screenplay is by Oscar® nominee Scott Silver and Oscar nominees Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson based on the acclaimed non-fiction book of the same name by Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias. Doug Merrifield serves as executive producer. “The Finest Hours” opens in U.S. theaters on Friday, January 29, 2016.

Visa Signature is a proud sponsor of the theatrical release of “The Finest Hours.” Visa Signature cardholders receive benefits including complimentary 24-hour Visa Signature Concierge service, exclusive travel perks, special fine wine and food experiences, and discounts at premium retailers. THE WAVE Trailer

Nestled in Norway's Sunnmøre region, Geiranger is one of the most spectacular tourist draws on the planet. With the mountain Åkerneset overlooking the village — and constantly threatening to collapse into the fjord — it is also a place where cataclysm could strike at any moment. After putting in several years at Geiranger's warning center, geologist Kristian (Kristoffer Joner) is moving on to a prestigious gig with an oil company. But the very day he's about to drive his family to their new life in the city, Kristian senses something isn't right. The substrata are shifting. No one wants to believe that this could be the big one, especially with tourist season at its peak, but when that mountain begins to crumble, every soul in Geiranger has ten minutes to get to high ground before a tsunami hits, consuming everything in its path. Those ten minutes are some of the most nerve-rattling you'll experience in any movie this year, but as The Wave continues the stakes only get higher. Ace director Roar Uthaug keeps things hurtling forward in a state of high anxiety until the very end. Giving Hollywood a run for its money, the film's canvas is broad, its effects eerily realistic, and its scale immense. Here comes the flood.

Magnolia Pictures will release THE WAVE in theaters and on demand March 4, 2016

About X JAPAN:
X Japan is the most successful rock band in Japanese history, and that is not a statement made lightly. The band has sold more than 30 million albums; singles and videos combined, sold out Japan's 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome 18 times - so far - and have played to tens of thousands of fans outside of Japan. In the band's early days their look and sound sparked a global interest in entertainment, especially with the Japanese cultural rock phenomenon, "Visual-Kei," a movement X Japan pioneered that spread globally.

X Japan formed in 1982 (calling themselves X) by Yoshiki and Toshi while they were still teenagers. Over the next 13 years, the band released five studio albums--Vanishing Vision (1988), Blue Blood (1989), Jealousy (1991), Art of Life (1993) and Dahlia (1996), as well as six live albums, ten best hits albums and 20 DVD releases. X Japan was the first Japanese band to achieve mainstream success while signed to an independent label. The band was so popular they became a cultural phenomenon.
In the fall of 1997, at the height of their success, the band broke up. Four months later, Hide, X Japan's original lead guitarist, was found dead in his Tokyo apartment. At his funeral, more than 50,000 fans came to mourn his passing. In early 2007 Yoshiki and Toshi resumed communication and later that year X Japan officially reformed. The band launched its reunion in 2008 with 3 nights at the Tokyo Dome. 2 years later, X Japan filmed a music video on the rooftop of Hollywood's Dolby Theatre with a throng of some 8,000 U.S. fans taking part in the shoot on Hollywood Blvd. But it was on August 8, 2010 that X Japan performed in front of a mainstream American crowd for the first time at Lollapalooza. Immediately following the festival, X Japan played the biggest concert in its history, selling out two consecutive shows at Japan's Nissan Stadium, filling 140,000 seats. The band's first North American tour wrapped with a monumental New York date selling out The Roseland Ballroom on Oct. 11, 2010.

In June 2011, X Japan kicked off a European Tour at London's Shepherd's Bush (selling -out the venue in 30 minutes). The tour continued to Paris and Utrecht wrapping in Berlin before the band traveled back to Japan to play the famed Summer Sonic Festival. That same year the world tour took them to South America where they sold out shows playing to massive crowds in Santiago, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Lima and Mexico City. X Japan then returned to Asia playing arena shows in Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei and Bangkok. In 2012 X Japan was the first Japanese band to take home the prize for "Best International Band" at the Golden Gods Awards held in the U.S.
In 2014 X Japan headlined a colossal show at New York's famed Madison Square Garden in the U.S. Now, in 2016, X Japan is gearing up for the biggest event in the band's history. The current line-up of X Japan is Yoshiki/drums, piano; Toshi/vocals; Pata/guitars; Heath/bass; and Sugizo/guitars,violin. X Japan recently announced the release of the band's 1st new studio album in 20 years, which will be available on March 11, 2016 in the U.K. and Japan with U.S. and other territories to follow in late 2016. The band will also perform live at SSE Wembley Arena in the U.K. for XDAY, immediately following a screening of their new documentary film 'WE ARE X' on March 12, 2016.
