Sean Penn Is Crazy For The Storm

It's been about five years since he last directed a film, but Sean Penn looks ready to step back into the director's chair. Penn is in talks to helm Warner Bros.' "Crazy for the Storm," based on the memoir by Norman Ollestad.

Will Fetters adapted the story, which revolves around Ollestad's relationship with his father and how the skills his father instilled in him helped him survive after a plane crash stranded him on a mountaintop.

Penn is planning just to direct, not star.

Bill Gerber will produce through his Gerber Pictures banner along with Fonda Snyder and Rob Weisbach.

The studio has been trying for some time to bring Penn aboard the project. Warners looked at other directors, including "Gravity" helmer Alfonso Cuaron, but always had its eye on Penn for the job.

Pic will be the first Penn has directed since he wrote and helmed 2007's "Into the Wild," also a memoir about a man's will to survive.

Joss Whedon Will Return For Avengers 2

Marvel reveals Whedon signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. Writing and directing Avengers 2 is part of that deal.

Joss Whedon will return to the Marvel Studios fold for a sequel to The Avengers. He also will create a Marvel-related TV series for ABC.

Disney CEO Robert Iger revealed the plans during an earnings call Tuesday, during which he boasted about Avengers being the third-biggest movie of all time and that Disney has initiatives in the works to "leverage the power of the Avengers" across the entire company.

That Marvel was planning a sequel to the $1.46 billion-grossing movie was not a surprise, but having Whedon back behind the camera definitely will make execs breathe easier.

Whedon was one of the key components to the success of the movie, with his deft screenwriting and knowledge of the superhero characters frequently cited for the high marks the movie got from critics and fans alike.

Having him shepherd Marvel’s foray into television is also an interesting move. Whedon is best known for creating Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff Angel, as well as the short-lived sci-fi-themed Firefly. While his ratings track record is mixed, he has a proven knack for creating shows that inspire passionate followings.
His double duties on the film and TV sides might be a hint that Marvel could be creating not only multiple movies but an even broader universe that also includes the small screen.

ABC still is developing a potential Hulk series with Guillermo del Toro attached. "It wasn't going to be ready this season, but we hope it's going to be ready for next season," ABC entertainment president Paul Lee said in May.

Any show to reach the air would be the first Marvel-oriented show since Blade, the short-lived vampire show that aired on Spike TV in 2006 and was a small-screen version of the New Line action horror movies.

THE BOURNE LEGACY Review. Does It Make The Franchise Proud?

THE BOURNE LEGACY Review
By: MattInRC

Does THE BOURNE LEGACY move the franchise into a new and exciting frontier, or does it miss the mark?

 Warning: major spoilers ahead.

As a fan of Intelli-Action (fast-paced AND smartly dialogued action cinema), I have enjoyed the Bourne series because it's essentially moved the action genre into a more intelligent direction, giving old tired franchises like James Bond new life. Watch Casino Royale to witness the renaissance courtesy of Jason Bourne. Thus it seemed like a strange moment when the lights came on after the satisfying The Bourne Ultimatum had concluded. Audiences were left to wonder as to the future of a franchise when its main character was essentially vindicated. The answer from Universal would take five years to arrive, as The Bourne Legacy would not reset the franchise, but rather move it in a different but no less familiar direction. So, does Legacy offer audiences another thrill-ride/political thriller? The answer is...well...maybe.

With Jason Bourne MIA and Blackbriar and Treadstone in tatters, we see a CIA ready to roll up its entire super-spy program, including a new and deadlier one called Outcome. One by one, these nine genetically-altered ginnea pigs are eliminated via powerful kill drugs disguised as the spy's daily ration of pills. In this smartly-executed roll-up, we are introduced to Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner, The Avengers), whose snow trek across the formidable Alaskan landscape is all part of his basic training. As he reaches a snowy cabin staffed by a fellow Outcome spy, the purge is already on, thanks to the efforts of Eric Beyer (Edward Norton, The Incredible Hulk) and Marc Turso (Stacy Keach, American History X), who send Cross a going away present wrapped in drone missile. Cross escapes, only to learn that the lab which orchestrated his journey to bad-ass super spy status has also been hit, leaving its sole survivor Dr. Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz, The Mummy) as a likely target for 'clean up.' As both struggle to stay one step ahead of the agency, Cross and Shearing must work together to complete Cross's genetic manipulation before he reverts to his former self, an army grunt whose recruiter added 15 points to his IQ, just to meet the quota.

Lost in almost 60 minutes in an odd mix of backstory/new story/boring story, Cross and his CIA friends dialogue and pontificate on too many subjects to keep up. By the time the promised action finally arrives, we've been given rambling lessons on chemistry, psychology, genetics, and the best way to take down a well-funded black ops laboratory. While this could be appealing as a documentary, it seeds a level of anxiousness among the audience that is not fully relieved by the mildly entertaining action set pieces, sans a gritty and intense shooting at the spy lab. Why director/writer Tony Gilroy (who penned all the Bourne films) felt that such conversations were necessary (and why we're forced to endure them) are beyond me. In addition, there's an odd feel to The Bourne Legacy, as if what we're watching is a 'looks and sounds like Bourne' flick, but is missing something underneath. Perhaps it's the soul of Matt Damon's hero that's gone, but it's also the lackadaisical pace at which the story moves. Perhaps it's true that movies utilizing the same director and writer are doomed to failure (unless you're Joss Whedon), as a serious editing opportunity by an objective third party appears to have been missed.

Renner satisfies as a suitable replacement for Bourne, but there's that lost element again in the switch. Where Bourne was a compassionate but invincible foe, Cross seems more like a drug addict, singularly fixated on 'locking in' his abilities by forcing a virus into his system to...blah blah blah. Stacy Keach is an odd choice here, but Norton plays CIA jerk quite well, sending you fixated glances about the unraveling mess that is Outcome. While the chemistry between Renner and Weisz make for good (not great) cinema, Gilroy does manage to interject enough of the Bourne humor to allow Cross and Shearing time to comment on the status of the chase. I think Renner will ultimately succeed in the role, but Gilroy must push the envelope beyond the 'spy getting chased by ill-suited black-ops hacks' line to keep the franchise fresh and exciting. I did appreciate the way Gilroy added elements from The Bourne Ultimatum into Legacy, merging two movies into a parallel timeline. As Bourne enters New York, Norton and team prepare to shut down their programs and eliminate their agents in the field, an ultimately effective strategy in a mire of lost opportunities.

Near the beginning of the film, Norton loudly ponders whether one of his employees is meant to be in the same meeting as he. I got that same feeling while watching The Bourne Legacy, as if Gilroy's long-winded, short-on-action script was meant for a viewer who enjoys an unbalanced experience to their films. While he does adequately expand the universe, paving the way for a continuation of the franchise, Gilroy will need to seek a better action/story balance and come out swinging in the sequel. For now, enjoy this good but not great effort: it's all I can do from venting extreme disappointment at the screen. The Bourne Legacy is rated a surprising PG-13 for intense violence and has a runtime of 135 minutes.

THE CAMPAIGN Review. Is It Worth Your Vote?

THE CAMPAIGN Review
By: MattInRC

A strong opening leads to a disappointing finish for THE CAMPAIGN.

If there was ever a time that our country should be laughing about the current political system, it should be now. Faced with the lowest approval ratings for our federal elected officials and a growing feeling that recent Supreme Court decisions have allowed powerful interests to control our elections, you would think that a smart, raunchy comedy about politics would be the perfect cure. On the surface, it would seem that The Campaign would serve this interest quite well: however, it fails to plant itself firmly on any comedic ground, existing somewhere between what-could-have been and the little engine that couldn't.

Congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell, Megamind) is the unquestioned leader of North Carolina’s 14th District; he says the right things to his constituents (although none of it ever makes sense), has the perfect looking wife and kids (who listen to ghetto rap about female body parts), and sports a perfect coiffure at events. But a recent public sexual disaster leaves him vulnerable to the Motch Brothers (Dan Akroyd and John Lithgow), powerful financial interests who want to bring low-wage Chinese jobs to the district. They decide to run Brady out of office by propping up the patsy Marty Huggins (Zack Galifinanakis,The Hangover). Huggins is not exactly what one might call a winner: frumpy, effeminate, and downright odd, Marty is soon contacted by the Motch’s secret weapon, campaign director Tim Wattley (Dylan McDermott, The Practice). Soon, Marty’s fortunes begin to improve (think Extreme Makeover: Election Edition), as he and Brady become mired in a nasty campaign. But when Marty learns of the Motch’s business plans, he must decide whether to sell out his town or take a stand.

The script by Chris Henchy feels like the dull edge of a knife by the third act, reminding audiences of his other failed works, The Other Guys and Land of the Lost. Director Jay Roach (Austin Powers series) can’t seem to coax our leads through an all-too-serious (and frankly dull) final act, which has become a popular but misguided comedic approach. There is always a moment when the lead actors lose the support of their most ardent fans, only to regain their affections sometime before the credits roll. Not only is it an easily recognizable parable, but it also places the audience in a kind of comedic purgatory, forcing them o wonder if they're watching a comedy or a dra-medy. If I didn't know any better, I'd say The Campaign's third act was the victim of a last minute re-write that was hastily pressed into service when the original failed with test audiences. It's not the first time this year we've seen evidence of tampering, but when your final act looks and feels like someone else wrote it, and attracting only a smattering of laughter from the audience for your efforts, it's a sure sign that something was changed. Roach has an excellent cast behind him, including McDermott whose lack of quality Hollywood projects never ceases to amaze me: his deadpan style nearly steals the show, delivering his fair share of one-liners and disappearing almost like an evil spirit into the dark drapes near film’s end. While the film has a surprise ending that's quite unlike most comedies, its effect is lost on an audience that can't wait to leave.

THE CAMPAIGN tries to be a funny, irreverent look at politics in a year that sorely needs it. Unfortunately, it suffers from the most basic premise of running a real election: you have to endear yourself to the audience. At no time does the film ever achieve this, existing more like a series of 30-second political hit-and-run commercials that you instantly forget about once they've aired. Its paltry 85-minute runtime feels more like a two-hour slosh through a tense political campaign than a full-tilt raunch-fest. A film with the talents of Will Ferrell and Zack Galfinakis should have equated to a surefire summer hit – instead, we are left wondering if we just saw a raunchy comedy about politics or a dra-medy about the comedy of politics.

I hate issuing clich├ęs that come from the film I’m reviewing, but in the words of Huggins’ own campaign slogan, “It’s a mess!” THE CAMPAIGN is rated R for brief nudity, language, and sexual situations.

ALF Film Could Invade Earth Soon

Sony Pictures Animation has closed a deal to acquire rights to the classic 1980s sitcom ALF and will develop the property into a hybrid CG/live action feature.

Jordan Kerner, who produced SPA’s adaptation of 1980s Saturday morning cartoon staple The Smurfs and helped turn it into a hybrid blockbuster franchise, will produce the project with show creators Tom Patchett, a veteran of 1970s comedies, and puppeteer Paul Fusco.

ALF stands for alien life form, and the '80s sitcom centered on a friendly furry alien creature (a puppet) who crash landed on Earth and took up with the Tanners, a suburban family. ALF, whose name was later revealed as Gordon Shumway, is sarcastic and has an appetite for cats. He courts trouble with government forces that are on his tail. The show aired 102 episode from 1986-90.

Fusco voiced the title character on the show and is expected reprise his role for the movie. In an extended interview with The Hollywood Reporter in May, he expressed hope that an ALF movie would finally happen.

No writer or director is attached.

Kerner is a veteran producer with credits ranging from The Mighty Ducks to Inspector Gadget to Charlotte’s Web. Last year's The Smurfs, his most recent produced movie, grossed more than $563 million worldwide. Kerner and SPA just wrapped production on The Smurfs 2, which has a release date of July 31, 2013.

Calm Down There Is No Director For Justice League Film

Today that implies Warner Bros will get Ben Affleck as director of its Justice League film. This is a story I checked out days ago, and didn’t run when Affleck’s reps stated that it was not going to happen with him. Now, it makes sense that Warner Bros would offer Affleck the project. Chris Nolan is top man over there, but after three Batfilms and after producing the Superman reboot Man of Steel, he’s gotten spandex-clad protagonists out of his system.

After Nolan, the studio then offers everything else to Harry Potter director David Yates (who is now keen on Tarzan) and Affleck, who has become a major director with Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and the upcoming Argo. Just because the studio wants Affleck doesn’t mean he will do the movie, and several sources tell me he might take a meeting, but that’s it.

After costing himself momentum as an actor with some questionable choices like Gigli, Affleck admirably scripted a second act for himself with his writing and directing skills, and did it by taking on unexpected, thoughtful films. His reps clearly denied he would take this, and why would he want to direct a Justice League movie, unless he himself had figured out a way to make one that would compare favorably with Joss Whedon’s billion dollar Marvel smash The Avengers? I don’t see it. As my old agent/manager pal Michael Black used to say sometimes when I came at him breathlessly with an important but dubious package involving one of his clients, “Don’t dress for that premiere, darling.”

Pixar's Partysaurus Rex First Images

Given how short Rex’s arms are, it’s ironic that he’s the Toy Story world’s resident hand-wringer.
But in Pixar’s new animated short Partysaurus Rex (playing before Finding Nemo 3-D on Sept. 14), we discover that bath time is when the nervous-nellie plastic dinosaur finally lets himself get down and dirty.

“He’s sick of being the angel of goodness and sensibleness and caution and fear,” says voice actor Wallace Shawn, who has played the persnickety plaything since 1995. “He wants to stand on the side of pleasure and happiness and joy. … I live this drama every day of my life!”

It’s the third in Pixar’s series of Toy Story Toons shorts, which follow life for Woody, Buzz and the gang in the care of new owner Bonnie (seen at the end of Toy Story 3, and as the face in the center of the bubbles in the pic below.) In this mini-movie, Rex gets drafted for bath time and encounters a sad lot of rub-a-dub-dub cohorts.

“If you’re a bath toy you get really intense playtime. It’s like a party,” says director Mark Walsh, who previously worked as an animator on Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille. “Then when the water goes down you can’t move. You’re helpless. And that’s pathetic, these guys in bottom of the tub all the time.”

As the only available toy with limbs, Rex puts his tiny arms to good use by turning on the water and getting the party going for those dried-out toys on his own – which leads to a sort of bubble-filled rave, complete with glow-in-the-dark toys making disco lights under an overturned colander and dance music by Grammy-nominated electronica musician BT.

“What I was going for was, you move to a new town and make new friends, and suddenly you think you have this chance where you can reinvent yourself,” says Walsh. “I love that Rex, in his sweetness, thinks he can reinvent who he is in the image of a party animal.”

Is this the beginning of a wilder, crazier Rex if we ever see a Toy Story 4? “I suppose it will be debated in history books whether toys evolve and mature, and perhaps reach a mid-life crisis,” Shawn jokes. “This is a debatable point.”
The short also has a number of hidden shout-outs to other Pixar films. One of the water toys looks suspiciously like Peach the starfish from Finding Nemo.
And that toilet seat cover in the photo above …?

The Dark Knight Rises Keeps Rising

Troubled superheroes dominated their amnesiac sci-fi counterparts at the US box office this weekend, with The Dark Knight Rises continuing to captivate US moviegoers to the tune of $36.4m and Total Recall fizzling with a disappointing $26m.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Movie Review -

Len Wiseman's Philip K. Dick redo, heading this side of the Pond at the end of August, came in at the lower end of its studio's predictions. Strangely, but perhaps fittingly for a movie about a man's struggles to escape the past, it shared an almost identical opening to Schwarzenegger's 1990 blockbuster, albeit a lot less flattering when you considering pesky factors like inflation.

TOTAL RECALL Review-

The Olympics and continuing fall-out from the Aurora massacre made it a disappointing few days at the movies: 25% down on the corresponding weekend in 2011. But despite the rival attractions of other superheroes like Michael Phelps, Batman continued to post big numbers. The Dark Knight Rises cruised past $350m during its third week of release, becoming the third fast movie to do so behind The Avengers and The Dark Knight.

The week's other big release, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, made a disappointing $14.7 million, an opening weekend dip of about $7m on its two Wimpy predecessors

Zero Dark Thirty Images And Trailer

We have the first teaser trailer and images from Zero Dark Thirty, the film is about the special operations forces mission to capture or kill Osama bin Laden. The film is directed by Kathryn Bigelow with screenplay by Mark Boal, both associated with The Hurt Locker, another military action thriller. It will star Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton, Edgar Ramirez, and Mark Strong.

Zero Dark Thirty will be an unusual film in that the climax of the story is already widely known and it’s the set-up that remains mysterious. Bin Laden was killed on May 2, 2011 by the U.S. Navy’s elite SEAL Team Six, but what remains largely unknown is the true backstory behind the raid, and how intelligence agencies and the military connected the dots that eventually brought them to that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
“I’m fascinated by people who dedicate themselves to really difficult and dangerous things for the greater good,” Boal said in a phone interview. “I think they’re heroic and I’m intrigued by them. I’m fascinated by the world they inhabit. I personally want to know how they caught bin Laden. All I can do is hope that it interests other people.”

The trailer is highly stylized, emphasizing the secrecy of the story with its use of the kind of bars used to black out information on redacted classified documents. In an email interview, Bigelow explains the significance of the title: “It’s a military term for 30 minutes after midnight, and it refers also to the darkness and secrecy that cloaked the entire decade long mission.”

The teaser also suggests a grittier, more deadly, boots-on-the-ground pursuit of information, rather than a drama about decisions made at the top in Washington.

This has been the primary source of controversy: Opponents of President Barack Obama have been eager for the public to avoid any reminders this election year that the Commander-in-Chief gave that order authorizing the raid that finally took down the terrorist mastermind.

The makers of Zero Dark Thirty insist their film is a study of the unsung heroes who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to take down bin Laden, not a celebration of Obama’s decision. When they made the Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker in 2008, which won them Oscars for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture, Bigelow and Boal were praised (and sometimes slammed) for leaving politics out of the film. They say they’re doing the same thing this time.

“There’s no political agenda in the film. Full stop. Period,” says Boal, a veteran journalist and war correspondent. “A lot of people are going to be surprised when they see the film. For example, the president is not depicted in the movie. He’s just not in the movie.”
