Chef Blu-ray Review

The cooking comedy Chef has its moments, but it's under-dressed for the occasion. A movie like the Jon Favreau comedy Chef begs for a litany of puns, so let's get them out the way. This undercooked but still flavorful comedy is missing key ingredients, resulting in something that's not quite a full meal. Carl Casper ( Favreau ) was an aspiring chef, a Superman Chef if you will, impressing critics and stomachs alike with his unique dishes. Unfortunately that was 10 years ago, and Casper is now heavier and a little more corporate, preparing the same dishes night after night. When local food critic Ramsey Michel ( Oliver Platt ) arrives for a tasting, Casper wants to make an entirely new menu, but the restaurant owner (Dustin Hoffman) wants nothing of the sort: he orders Casper to prepare his 'hits.' The result is a scathing review that insults Casper, leading him to quit after losing a Twitter war with Michel. Casper's ex-wife Inez ( Sofia Vergara ) feels ba

Weekend Box Office Report: June 29th 2014

Age of Extinction wipes out the competition. Transformers: Age of Extinction rolled out to an impressive $100 million opening in the U.S. and $301.3 million worldwide, becoming the top opening film of 2014. Its opening is not the highest of the series: that still belongs to Revenge of the Fallen ($108 million). Although the film cost an estimated $210 million, the film has already made most of that back, even if you add marketing to that total. The success of its opening week can be traced to two things: Director Michael Bay reloading the cast with the more fan/press-friendly Mark Wahlberg and better heavyweights Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer, and the Transformers name itself, which always guarantees large opening crowds and plenty of buzz. And while the film has gotten slammed on RottenTomatoes - with a measely 17% approval rate - it's faired better on other sites like CinemaScore, which was given an "A-" by fans. We weren't impressed at all with A

The Fault In Our Stars Rules The Box Office

It was a battle of romance vs. sci-fi this weekend at the American box office, and love really did conquer all, as The Fault In Our Stars soundly trounced Edge Of Tomorrow in the quest for the top of the charts. With Fault novel writer John Green’s impressive social media following and the presence of rising star Shailene Woodley in the lead driving interest, The Fault In Our Stars drew fans of the book and the actress in droves, front-loading attendance for a result of $48.2 million this first weekend alone. That means the movie has already taken in four times the amount it cost to make, and shows no sign of slowing down despite a drop between Friday and Saturday, with audiences giving it a healthy thumbs up, which indicates it’ll have positive word of mouth appeal. It’s also yet more clear proof that films driven by women in front of the camera and in the audience can be hugely successful, especially when you consider that Fault deposed Angelina Jolie and Maleficent from the

May 2014 Movie(s) On Our Radar

Read on to learn if Hollywood's first swing into Summer 2014 bring too many players to the game. Story by: Matt Cummings When we wrote our Most Anticipated List of 2014, it included April was an interesting month, filled with surprising hits ( God's Not Dead ), guaranteed winners ( Captain America: The Winter Soldier ) and several notable duds ( Need for Speed and Sabotage ).  But now, it's on to May and the beginning of the summer season, a time when Hollywood begins to play its big cards hoping for long lines and plenty of popcorn sales.  May 2013 saw the mammoth Iron Man 3 , while 2012 featured a little film called The Avengers , so 2014 arrives filled to the gills with several interesting titles worth mentioning.  Several appeared in our MOST ANTICIPATED LIST FOR 2014 , and it's great to finally see them arrive. The schedule includes a human spider, a 350 foot lizard, a witch, some mutants, and a sexually depraved police officer. The Amazing Spider-M
