The Fighter Movie Review By: Sandwichjohn

The Fighter Movie Review
By: Sandwichjohn

Let's start with how Amazing this film was, I was expecting great things from this movie but the performance by Christian Bale as Dickie Eklund was Oscar worthy for sure. This guys just seems to amaze me with his acting skills and how serious he takes his craft. Mark Wahlberg did a great job portraying "Irish" Micky Ward in the film. If you want to see a real life "Rocky" film then this one is for you. To me The Fighter rivals any Rocky films out there. And being based on the real life story of Ward even make it more interesting. All the issues he went threw to live this real life Cinderella story.

There were a few spots in the film I had trouble with but nothing that would deter me from going to watch it again.

Yes the film is based on a boxer and if your a boxing fan your going to love this film the action is great but what really carries this film is the acting and story. And yes this movie is also for people that do not like boxing you will get sucked in by the story and forget that it is about one man's boxing dream to become a Champion. What makes this film not your average boxing film is that the story evolves around the ring but is not confined in it.

Read more after the Jump..

The movie starts off by an HBO crew following around Dicky Eklund around his home town of Lowell, which he thinks he is being filmed for a comeback story. Eklund real claim to fame was knocking out the great Sugar Ray Leonard down in a Round when they fought.

Micky himself was a quite person, family first type of guy. Micky let his left hook do the talking in the ring. While Micky was to be getting trained by his brother who would rather smoke crack and almost missing some of Micky's most important moments in his life due to his drug habit. Another person in Micky's life that had an impact on his life was his overbearing mother, and manager played by Melissa Leo.

Micky was getting older in age and losing fights and was not being taken serious by anyone. Then comes no BS taking girlfriend played by Amy Adams. She helps him start to see the light and how his family is holding him back from being the champion she knows he is. While things are going get in his life he brother returns to jail. While Eklund rebounded in life after nearly being KO'd by drugs and crime. Micky gets to training for his upcoming bouts.

We will leave it at that, I want you to experience this film for yourself and not to judge the film by my review.

The one thing that I wished they showed was the great battles between Arturo Gatti. Those were some of the most thunderous fights I have ever seen.

The bottom line The Fighter is a dazzling film with a great cast and a director with superb story telling ability that made this film even more then what I was expecting. Remember this movie is based on a true story and Micky and brother had a hand on making this film come to life. Again you do not have to be a boxing fan to fall in love with this movie.

8 out of 10 Sandwiches

As a welterweight from the wrong side of the tracks, Irish-American Dicky Eklund is the pride of working class Lowell, Massachusetts. Living in his shadow is his half-brother and sparring partner Micky Ward. After fighting Sugar Ray Leonard, Eklund plunges into a nightmare of crack addiction, violence and prison. His family's hopes are crushed in the wake of Dicky's decline. Like a real life Rocky, Micky fights on his own terms and pulls his family out of despair with his meteoric rise in the ring. Freshly paroled Dicky finds redemption training his little brother, now known as "Irish" Micky Ward, for his Welterweight Championship bout with Shea Neary.

Robert Pattinson To Star In Cosmopolis

Not Just A Pretty Face Anymore

Robert Pattinson has booked his first major lead for when he completes The Twilight Saga. Pattinson will star in Cosmopolis, the Don DeLillo novel adaptation that David Cronenberg wrote and will direct. Pattinson, who just starred with Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz in Fox 2000's Francis Lawrence-directed adaptation of the Sara Gruen novel Water For Elephants.

Pattinson will play Eric Packer. A financial wunderkind, Packer risks his entire fortune to bet against the yen on a tumultuous day. His deed puts him in the crosshairs for assassination in a drama that is a study of capitalism in a slightly futuristic metropolis. Most of the scenes in the book take place in the limousine that transports Packer from place to place. Marion Cotillard and Paul Giamatti are also reportedly doing the film, but those same reports had Colin Farrell poised to take the lead role.

As Pattinson and his Twilight Saga castmates plan their careers after the series is completed--Bill Condon is directing the final film right now, Pattinson is following a path based on strong filmmakers and tasteful source material. He took the role because he is a big fan of Cronenberg's work and an admirer of DeLillo's books.

Gareth Edwards To Direct Godzilla

The studio behind Hangover, 300 and The Dark Knight have announced that they will be creating a new Godzilla movie.

Special effects juggernaut "Godzilla" has a director with British helmer Gareth Edwards on board for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.

"Godzilla" would be Edwards' second film. He wrote and directed low-budget sci-fier "Monsters," for which he won trophies for best director and best technical achievement last month at the British Independent Film Awards.

Read more after the Jump..

"Monsters," set in Mexico, focused on an alien-monster infestation in a quarantine zone.

Legendary had announced in March that it had closed the rights deal for "Godzilla" with Japan's Toho Co., which has overseen more than 25 "Godzilla" films. It also announced at that point that it was aiming "Godzilla" for a 2012 release.

In addition to Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, producers on the new film will be Dan Lin ("Sherlock Holmes"), Roy Lee and Brian Rogers.

"Godzilla" is part of Legendary's financing deal with Warner Bros. Legendary's productions with Warners have included "The Dark Knight," "300" and "The Hangover."

Edwards is also expected to work on the script, written by David Callaham

J.J. Abrams Pitching Pulp Fiction Type Show

Busy Man He Is

While it’s not exactly Pulp Fiction, it sounds a lot like it — beginning with the title.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is developing Pulp, an hour-long crime drama set in a slightly heightened reality, a-la Pulp Fiction.

Longtime Abrams collaborators Monica Breen and Alison Schapker penned the script and would serve as exec producers. The former Brothers & Sisters showrunners previously worked with Abrams on Alias, Lost, and most recently, Fringe.

Bad Robot will begin shopping Pulp to the networks as early as next week. It caps a busy development season for Abrams’ Warner Bros.-based company, which currently has projects in contention at CBS (crime thriller from Jonah Nolan), Fox (the drama Alcatraz), and NBC (the Michael Emerson-Terry O’Quinn comedic drama Odd Jobs).

Joe Carnahan To Direct "The Grey" Starring Liam Nesson

Joe Carnahan To Re-Team With Liam Nesson

Sacramento's own  Director Joe Carnahan has gotten a green light to start production next week on The Grey, a thriller that stars Liam Neeson, Dallas Roberts, James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo (Warrior), Nonso Anozie, and Joe Anderson. They play oil-rig roughnecks left stranded by a plane crash right in the hunting zone of a pack of rogue wolves on the frozen Alaskan tundra.

Coming off the Fox film The A-Team, Carnahan said he was glad to be making a down and dirty indie, even though the locations in Vancouver in the Northern British Columbia region are numbingly cold.

“It gets to be 30 below, and when we went out the other day, I took off my hat to see how long I could last, and my skin was burning with frostbite in a little over a minute,”

Read more after the Jump..

Carnahan said . “In a way, it’s great, because it beats the shit out of the cast and that suits the storyline.” He said cold and an indie budget leads to a quick-paced shoot with an economy of takes, in a planned 40-day shoot. “I haven’t had a situation like this since Narc, where there’s no distributor, but you get to make the movie you want to, staying as light on your feet as you can.” Though he was outspoken about his problems how The A-Team was sold, Carnahan said the experience was mostly positive, “but stressful when it is all about shooting for a release date that you just gotta make. This movie is one-fifth the budget, but that’s the way it should be." As for the story, Carnahan said what makes it exceptional is the wolf pack: "The wolves have a territorial range of 300 miles, and they will run you out if you cross that. If you’re within 30 miles of their den as is the case here, they will try to kill you. It’s simple arithmetic, but it creates an opportunity for one of those man vs. nature movies I love like Deliverance and Touching The Void.”

WWE's Tough Enough Is Back

Who's The Next Miz Or Morrison

USA Network is bringing back WWE Tough Enough as its first reality series in 5 years. The top cable network this morning announced it has given a ten-episode order to the a non-scripted series, which will be produced by Shed Media USA in collaboration with World Wrestling Entertainment. The show, featuring 12 contestants vying for the grand prize, a contract with WWE, will debut on April 4, the day after WrestleMania XXVII and immediately following USA’s staple WWE Monday Night Raw at 11 PM.

As of 2010, the only Tough Enough winner still wrestling for WWE is John Hennigan. He is currently wrestling as John Morrison on the Raw brand.

Hennigan and Tough Enough I winner Maven Huffman are the only two Tough Enough winners to win championships in the WWE, with Hennigan winning both the ECW Championship and WWE Intercontinental Championship and Huffman winning the WWE Hardcore Championship. Christopher Nowinski, who didn't win Tough Enough, also held the WWE Hardcore Championship. Mike Mizanin, who came in second place in the $1,000,000 Tough Enough and is better known as The Miz, has won the United States Championship on two occasions and the WWE Championship once. Together, John Morrison and The Miz also would become WWE Tag Team Champions, World Tag Team Champions, and two-time Slammy Award winners. Josh Lomberger, better known as Josh Mathews, is currently the longest tenured WWE employee from the entire Tough Enough cast, eventually signing with WWE in 2002 and becoming an announcer and interviewer on a variety of WWE shows, including Raw, SmackDown, NXT and now defunct ECW.

It will then move to its regularly scheduled slot, Mondays at 8 PM. WWE Tough Enough originally ran on MTV for 3 seasons, and in 2004 it moved to UPN where it aired for a season as part of SmackDown. USA has been actively looking to re-enter the reality arena, beefing up its unscripted executive team and developing concepts for new series.

The Sequel Map- Are Sequels Better Originals

The Sequel Map: Are The Any Sequels Better Than Their Originals?

The scores on the chart come from Rotten Tomatoes with the originals’ scores on the X-axis, and the sequels’ scores on the Y. Films at the center line are sequels with the exact rating as the original; films above are sequels that have surpassed the original; films below, ones that fared worse. The bubble size is the domestic gross.

There are exceptions – Godfather II hit harder than the original. The Dark Knight took the start of Batman Begins and made it into either the most thoughtful action movie of all time, or the fasted-paced thoughtful movie of all time (at least until Inception) – but, sadly, far more films fit the rule – and more sequels fail to surpass their original work.

Check out the chart after the Jump..

Click the image above for the larger version.

As evidence, all sequels with Rotten Tomatoes scores have been categorized below, with the originals’ scores on the X-axis, and the sequels’ scores on the Y. Films at the center line are sequels with the exact rating as the original; films above are sequels that have surpassed the original; films below, ones that fared worse.

Notes: Categorization of sequels is sometimes more art than science, so I’ve had to follow a few rules: I’ve only included the second film in any series, never third or following films. I haven’t included remakes or “reboots,” and I’m only presenting films which opened (at some time) in the US and have Rotten Tomatoes ratings.

Open Letter To Arnold Schwarzenegger

Out Of Office Now What?

The former biggest movie star on the planet left acting behind to chase a career in politics. But as he steps down from running the state of California—some would say into the ground—what are the options for the former Terminator?

Dearest Arnold,
It must be a little strange for you, returning to a life out of the political spotlight, with further prospects of electoral office pretty much closed off to you. (Unless you're a glutton for punishment.) What are you gonna do with yourself?

You've recently made some statements about the ease of stepping back in front of the camera: "It is like bicycling, or like skiing. ... You get on it and you feel like there is no time lapse there at all." That may be how it might seem to you, but to the audience it's a different story.

You've been gone for a long time, Arnold—and even before you took office in 2003, no one could say that you were a vital Hollywood star. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines would've been a decent enough swan song, but Around the World in 80 Days pretty much wiped the slate clean and evoked the ham-fisted mediocrity of Batman & Robin.

So if you are going to make another bid at motion picture stardom, it seems like there are three options open to you:

1) Get in shape and try to be an action hero again.
Read More after the Jump..

Which is probably the least appealing of the options. Stallone has pretty much cornered the market on over-the-hill-but-still-capable-of-kicking-ass throwback stars. And Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Wesley Snipes are nipping at his heels. You don't want to seem like the sad former bodybuilders charging $20 for autographs at Comic-Con. We don't want that for you, either.

2) Go back to comedy.

You were actually a pretty decent comedian for a while, Last Action Hero and Jingle All the Way notwithstanding. Twins and Kindergarten Cop are vastly entertaining flicks, and you showed some real comic timing. The risk here is appearing as a parody of yourself. It's possible to embrace that—Exhibit A: William Shatner—but it's a tricky line to walk.

3) Become a real actor.

Heh. Just kidding. Even when you were in your prime, Arnold, no one would've described you as a master thespian. You were always "better than he has any right to be." It might be a little late to switch gears so drastically, to call on muscles that haven't merely atrophied, but that you've never actually used before.

Instead, we're going to offer you a fourth alternative, which takes a bit of option 1 and sprinkles in a pinch of option 3, and sticks it in the retro blender:

4) King Conan.

You're now old enough to play a barbarian in the winter of his years, softened a bit by years on the throne of Aquilonia. You can sell the weariness of a hero, tempered, who must revisit a life he left behind so many years ago. And you can whip that body into shape one last time to heft that sword you've been keeping in your office all these years. Conan is a being of will. And so is Arnold. At least the one we fondly remember is.

Or, you could just wallow in the riches gleaned from decades of wise real estate investments and movie residuals. But if you're gonna take one last shot at the brass ring, you could do worse than play the character that made you in the first place.

Stan Lee Receives A Star On Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Creator Gets His Star

Stan Lee, considered to have exerted more influence over the comic book industry than anyone else in history, received the 2,428th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today.

One-time Spider-Man writer and illustrator turned Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and Gill Champion, president and chief operating officer of POW! Entertainment, which Lee founded and serves as chairman and chief creative officer, were among those joining Lee at the ceremony in front of the Live Nation building on Hollywood Boulevard.

Lee created or co-created 90 percent of Marvel Comics' characters, including Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Daredevil, The Avengers, Silver Surfer and Dr. Strange.

Born Stanley Martin Lieber on Dec. 28, 1922, in New York City, Lee began his career in 1939 as an assistant at Timely Comics with such duties as getting lunch, filling inkwells and proofreading.

His first published work was as a text filler for Captain America No. 3, published in 1941. He wrote under the name Stan Lee, which would later become his legal name, writing in his autobiography that he intended to save his given name for more literary work.

Lee was named interim editor of Timely Comics in 1941, and would be editor-in-chief for what would evolve into Marvel Comics in 1961 until 1972 when he became publisher.

More than 2 million of Lee's comic books have been published in 75 nations and in 25 languages. His characters have been featured in 24 animated television series and several live-action movies.

Now chairman emeritus of Marvel Comics, Lee is developing new characters, comic books, movies and television projects for POW! Entertainment.

Concept Art Of Indiana Jones

Comic Stud

Before anyone was cast as George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's rugged treasure hunter, the artist who gave Nick Fury his techno-'60s swagger was hired to craft the first images of the archaeologist rogue-hero.

And when we call Steranko a stud, we're not being hyperbolic. Before working for Marvel— illustrating books like Captain America and Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. with a groundbreaking pop-surrealist flair—Steranko was, allegedy, a gymnast, a fire-eater, a musician, an escape artist, a pugilist, a stage magician and a burglar.

All of which makes him the perfect guy to do for Raiders of the Lost Ark what concept artist Ralph McQuarrie did for Star Wars: conjure style-setting images from words on a page. And looking at these paintings, it's clear how much made it to the big screen.

Red Dawn Remake May See The Light In 2011

With MGM’s restructuring plan complete after a $500 million line of credit from JPMorgan, there has been much news made about the studio’s move to get both The Hobbit and James Bond 23 into production quickly. What about the films MGM shelved during its bankruptcy? Movies like Red Dawn, The Cabin in the Woods and others. Not much has been said about those languishing projects, but word is spreading that MGM may put the Red Dawn remake out this year.

The film was directed by Dan Bradley, who tried to have the studio sell the project to Fox so they could release it last year, but that never happened. The completed film has been sitting on a shelf unseen ever since. The story revolves around a ragtag team of high school students who fight to save their town against a Chinese invasion. The film is now gearing up for a potential 2011 release date, and it will now be going head-to-head with the similarly themed Tomorrow, When the War Began. Already a hit in Australia and other parts of the world, this adaptation of the John Marsden novel also pits a group of high school students against an invading army. The official release date will most likely land in the fall, as MGM isn’t expected to fully emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy for several more months.

In a Hollywood Reporter interview, screenwriter Carl Ellsworth described the tone of the film’s remake as:
“The tone is going to be very intense, very much keeping in mind the post-9/11 world that we’re in. As ‘Red Dawn’ scared the heck out of people in 1984, we feel that the world is kind of already filled with a lot of paranoia and unease, so why not scare the hell out of people again?”

Red Dawn comes to theaters sometime in 2011 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Adrianne Palicki, Josh Hutcherson, Isabel Lucas, Josh Peck, Brett Cullen, Matt Gerald. The film is directed by Dan Bradley.

Tron: Legacy Passes100 Million Mark

25% Comes From Imax Theaters

Tron: Legacy crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office on Tuesday. The movie, budgeted at $170 million, which has been in U.S. theaters for 12 days, has also made around $75 million overseas.

The most interesting note about the domestic number is that almost a quarter of the box office receipts -- about $25 million -- are from IMAX theaters. Tron is playing in 3,451 theaters across Canada and the U.S., with only 235 of those being IMAX houses. For that low count to generate 25% of the gross is astonishing. And a record proportion for IMAX.

Read more after the Jump..

But while that is good news for IMAX, it’s not necessarily good news for Disney. IMAX filmgoers tend to be in the 15 to 34-year-old demo and are -- how shall I put it? -- geekier than the average person. So the numbers reveal that while the tentpole is performing solidly in its core demo, it’s ability to break out into a broader audience might remain a bit elusive, despite the extensive ad campaign designed to widen the tent.

Also coming into play for Tron is the PG rating. The classification would theoretically broaden the potential audience, allowing families to join in on the trip to the Grid. But some box office observers note that the classification might have signaled that the movie isn’t as edgy as some fanboys -- the fickle fans of these kind of movies -- would have liked.

Ratings are actually a larger issue for Disney, which has signalled a desire to lure notable filmmakers to develop projects for its slate. For example, David Fincher and Guillermo del Toro, both known for making envelope-pushing films, are working on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Haunted Mansion, respectively. Disney will need to find ways to develop projects that not only showcase the distinct voice of their filmmakers -- usually that factor that allows a film to pop above the din -- but still be broad enough to attract the size of audience the studio craves.

Fox Passes On "24" Movie

In Suspended Animation

Fans of Jack Bauer who were hoping to get a big screen fix of their favorite anti-hero may be in for a long wait: EW has learned exclusively that 20th Century Fox has nixed a script from Billy Ray (State of Play) that would have continued the storyline of the rogue CTU agent from the long-running drama 24.

“As far as I know, it is in suspended animation,” Howard Gordon, the longtime executive producer of 24 who is also expected to produce the big screen version,  ”There is talk about re-approaching it. I understand (director/producer) Tony Scott is meeting with Kiefer to talk about ideas. People are still talking about it.”

When 24 ended its eight-year run on Fox in May, Sutherland told EW the series finale would tee up the movie. “We wanted to create a definitive end for Jack Bauer,” the actor explained. “Since we do have the intention to make the feature film, it would lead into that and certainly set that up. Something we’ve dealt with in the series is how the crisis always has to come to us because we don’t have time to move anywhere in a real time world. In a two-hour (movie) representation of the 24 world, planes, trains, and automobiles all of a sudden become a factor because you are not required to go scene by scene in real time. That’s something I can say I am very excited about.”

Gordon is certainly keeping busy while Fox decides Jack Bauer’s next play: Besides having two dramas in development at Showtime and Fox, he’s busy promoting his thriller novel Gideon’s War. (And how’s this for staying loyal to the CTU family: Carlos Bernard, aka Tony Almeida, is reportedly narrating the audiobook version. For Gordon book signing details, click here). But Gordon remains optimistic that Jack’s days are not over.

“I was disapppointed [Fox] passed on the script but I’m certainly hopeful that the movie will get made at some point,” he said. “Anecdotally, I’ve heard from people who are really missing the show and I do think there is more life in Jack Bauer.”
