First Thoughts: 'The Muppets'

We pontificate on the return of an American classic to the small screen. Review by Matt Cummings The Muppets have experienced as of late what one might call an identity crisis. Filled with the glory of the 2012 movie , our hearts were nearly broken by the immense critical and financial disappointment of Muppets Most Wanted . It was as if a great sports athlete, bound for certain glory, was suddenly laid up by injury and unavailable to fulfill their destiny. But as in sports, entertainment always seems to get a second chance, and that's exactly what has happened for The Muppets. Ever since we reported on Tuesday that they would be returning to ABC Television in the Fall , our hopes for success have grown with the trailer that was released during the network's Upfront event. If you haven't see it yet, check out the extended trailer and see if your thoughts align with ours: From the getgo, it's clear that the new show has a familiar flavor: zany Muppet ch

Network Pilot Season Has Begun

The Big 5 deciding what they expect us to watch this fall. By Brandon Wolfe Pilot season has commenced as the networks have begun their first round of pickups. NBC has ordered the dramas The Player , Chicago Med , Blindspot and Heartbreaker to series. Also in contention are Warrior , Game of Silence , The Curse of the Fuentes Women and Love Is a Four Letter Word . The network is really pinning its rebirth hopes on drama rather than comedy, the genre upon which it built an empire in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The crop given the go-ahead today will join fellow dramas Shades of Blue , Emerald City and pointless reboot/event series Heroes: Reborn in the fall. On the comedy front, NBC has a number of prospects, including Superstore , Strange Calls , People Are Talking , a pointless small-screen reboot of Problem Child , How We Live and Cuckoo . Already ordered are Telenovela starring Eva Longoria and, yet one more pointless reboot, Coach . Fox will be adding its television adapt

Muppets Most Wanted Review: Typical Muppet Zaniness Equals Awesome For Us.

Muppets Most Wanted Review By: Matt Cummings The sequel Muppets Most Wanted is typical Muppets zaniness, and that's awesome for us. Among the most pleasant surprises of 2011 was the return of Jim Henson's Muppets in The Muppets . An emotional reunion filled with all the classic Muppet ingredients - memorable songs and zany comedy - it made a huge splash among old and new fans alike. Whether that winning formula could be repeated in a sequel has been the subject of debate among those who lovingly grew up with Sesame Street and later The Muppet Show , but who also worried that Disney might not give it the free reign it deserved. Luckily, Muppets Most Wanted recaptures that magic in many ways, but forgivingly misses in a few others. As the curtain literally draws on the last Muppets movie, the team realizes that their newly-rediscovered stardom is not as great as they thought. Feeling a bit desperate for direction, they hire the sneaky agent Dominic Badguy

Amy Adams Is In A Dark Places

Amy Adams usually likes to mix up lighter material (such as The Muppets ) with more dramatic work ( The Fighter ). She’ll definitely be headed down the latter route if she signs on to Dark Places . Gilles Paquet-Brenner is attached to direct his script, which itself is adapted from Gillian Flynn’s book. The story digs deep into repressed memory and how events can be altered by the passage of time. Adams will play a young woman whose family was murdered when she was seven. Back in the day, she pointed to her brother as the culprit, testifying against him in court. Now, 25 years later, a group obsessed with notorious crimes confronts her with some searching questions about what actually happened that day. Could the truth lie somewhere in between? We’re guessing yes, otherwise this will be a very short thriller. Adams is in talks to star right now, and there is no start date listed for the indie pic. She’s just finished working on baseball drama Trouble With The Curve alongside Cl

THE MUPPETS Blu-Ray Review By: Matt

THE MUPPETS Blu-Ray Review By: Matt The Muppets' release to Blu-ray is felt puppet heaven! First off, allow me to admit that I love the Muppets. This goes back to my earliest memories of Sesame Street, to The Muppet Show and Muppets Tonight. It’s this thing I have about insanely funny puppets and the ways they take the seemingly ordinary (staircases, for example) and turn it into something completely classic (“Upstairs, Downstairs”) which makes them so memorable. But the real joy was watching a crusty old man like my father watching the Muppets; his reaction made me realize that these guys knew what they were doing. Fast forward to 2004, when Disney bought the rights to the franchise (minus those Sesame Street characters that weren’t owned exclusively by creator Jim Henson). And while the result was a few funny telefilms (A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie), the final product always left us salivating for something on the big screen. We got our wish last year when The Mup

THE MUPPETS Wocka Wocka Blu-Ray Review

THE MUPPETS Wocka Wocka Value Pack Blu-Ray Review By: RAMA Looks like this Blu-ray has everything you need according to RAMA . Ah yes, the movie that made me feel like a kid again. It’s 2011’s ultimate nostalgic movie for a lot of us who are very familiar with these iconic characters. Who can forget animal, Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, Swedish Chef, Pepe, and so many more?! A billion thanks to Disney, director James Bobin, screenwriters Nicholas Stoller, Jason Segel, Bret McKenzie for bringing this gang back to us and in full force. And now, it’s time to light the lights, it’s time for THE MUPPETS to hit wocka-wocka value pack blu-ray… ‘Wocka-Wocka Value Pack,’ which contains the movie on Blu-ray high definition, DVD and Digital Copy (three discs), plus a download card which allows fans to own all the songs from the film’s hugely popular soundtrack. Disney’s “The Muppets” Blu-ray Combo Pack, with its flawless picture and pitch perfect sound, comes with a fantastic slate of bonu

THE MUPPETS Movie Review By: Rama

THE MUPPETS Movie Review By: Rama Is Rama still in love with The Muppets after all these years? Please make sure to follow him on Facebook and Twitter . THE MUPPETS makes me smile, makes me feel like a kid again. This film doesn’t have a single dull moment, I love every minute! Genius songwriter Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords) should get nominated for his catchy original songs Man or Muppet and Life’s A Happy Song . I had my worries at first because the Forgetting Sarah Marshall team Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller’s brand of humor are in the same R-rated raunchy ring as Judd Apatow’s but Segel and Stoller are very respectful to THE MUPPETS characters and this whole property. There’s no innuendo and it’s very family friendly. Folks of all ages will enjoy the humor. Neither Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzy, Gonzo nor Pepe are any different than the way remembered them growing up. And Walter is a fantastic latest addition to one of the most beloved gangs of all time… Wh

It will be shown in front of The Muppets movie when it hits theaters. 4 New Clips From The Muppets- Blame it all on toy envy as a Happy Meal-type toy at a fast-food restaurant yearns to break out of his display case to play like a real toy. He kidnaps Buzz Lightyear in an attempt to take over his play-filled existence.”It’s like the Prince and the Pauper tale for toys,” says writer/director Angus MacLane. “Except one of them happens to be 3 inches tall.” The life-reversal forces the real Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tim Allen, to deal with a support group for discarded, unloved fast-food toys. “These toys’ existence is about being really popular before the meal and then being totally forgotten about,” MacLane says. “And sometimes they don’t even get played with.” Though Buzz doesn’t fit into the group, he has trouble exiting. “There’
