THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE Soundtrack Will Be Released August 26th

Deal Marks First Time the Multi-Grammy® Winning Band will Record for a Motion Picture

Multiplatinum recording artist Coldplay will release the first track from the official soundtrack album for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, it was announced today by Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF) and Republic Records, marking the first time Coldplay has ever recorded an original song for a motion picture. The song, titled “Atlas,” is scheduled to be available via iTunes and all digital retailers on August 26, 2013. Republic Records is again teaming up with Lionsgate to release the soundtrack in advance of Lionsgate distributing the film on screens worldwide on November 22, 2013.

"I have great respect and admiration for Coldplay, and we are thrilled with how well they have connected to the themes and ideas within the film," said filmmaker Francis Lawrence. "Their unwavering passion and excitement for the project elevated the collaboration even further, and we can't wait to share this music with audiences around the world."

"We are so honored that Coldplay, one of the iconic rock bands of our generation, will perform the first song out on the new soundtrack," said Tracy McKnight, Lionsgate's Head of Film Music. "Knowing that Chris Martin is a fan of the books makes this even more meaningful. The Coldplay single underscores the stature of recording artists we've assembled for this powerful soundtrack."

Monte Lipman, Chairman & CEO of Republic Records, stated, "The creative alliance between Coldplay and The Hunger Games franchise will create a level of excitement and anticipation of epic proportions."

Coldplay is one of the top recording artists of recent times, selling over 60 million records worldwide and winning seven Grammy Awards and five MTV Video Awards, among other honors. They are signed to Parlophone, the legendary label known for The Beatles, Radiohead, Queen, David Guetta and more.

The first installment of The Hunger Games was the 13th highest-grossing North American release of all time on its way to grossing nearly $700 million at the worldwide box office.

This is the first in a series of highly anticipated announcements of the new artists to be revealed in the coming weeks.

The first Hunger Games partnership between Republic Records and Lionsgate yielded the Grammy Award-winning, chart-dominating The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 And Beyond executive produced by T Bone Burnett.

The album hit #1 on the Billboard Top 200 on its release with sales over 175,000, making it the first soundtrack to top the chart since November 2009. It was the best-selling soundtrack of 2012, the fastest selling soundtrack ever at iTunes, and was certified gold by the RIAA shortly after its release. The album earned a Golden Globe Award nomination and three Grammy Award nominations, and its first single, Taylor Swift's "Safe & Sound" featuring The Civil Wars, won the 2013 Grammy Award for "Best Song Written for Visual Media".

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence) has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (played by Josh Hutcherson). Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson's Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy written by Suzanne Collins that has sold over 50 million copies in print in the U.S. alone.

A division of Universal Music Group, the world's leading music company, Republic is home to an all-star roster of multi-platinum, award-winning legends and superstar artists such as Amy Winehouse, Ariana Grande, Black Sabbath, Colbie Caillat, Enrique Iglesias, Florence + the Machine, Godsmack, Gotye, Kelly Rowland, Owl City, Of Monsters & Men among many others.

Elysium Review. Elysium is A Wild, Messy, Ugly, & Awesome Futuristic Ride

Elysium Review
By: MattInRC

If you had the great luck to check out the Science Fiction surprise District 9, you were introduced to South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp, who painted the perfect 'Can't we all get along?' apartheid story. His newest release, the distopian Elysium, isn't as provocative or as meaningful, but it does strengthen his resume as an up-and-coming director in an intriguing batch of rising stars.

Set in the year 2154, Elysium is more like A Tale of Two Cities, except this one features an Earth choking on its own pollution, crime, and absolute destitution. Robots patrol the streets, but no one seems willing to stop the human misery. Enter the ex-con Max (Matt Damon, The Bourne Identity), who's trying to put his life back on track. With his head shaved and a body full of tattoos, Max works at the local plant which makes the robotic henchman who early in the show break his arm while conducting a search. It's in the hospital that he gets stitched up by his childhood buddy Frey (Alice Braga, Predators), whom we learn was an orphan like Max. While building a group of robots, Max is exposed to a lethal dose of radiation, giving him only five days to live. He immediately turns his attention to the paradise that is Elysium, an orbiting space station filled with the well-to-do's who were rich enough to escape Earth years before. Their wealth has afforded them elegant homes and bio-beds which repair every manner of illness. Max sees this as the only way to survive, so he agrees to a gothic transformation whereby his body is outfitted with the same machines he built for so long.

But Elysium isn't so pristene, as Defense Secretary Delacourt (Jodi Foster, Contact) is scheming to stage a coup using the same machines manufactured by Max and owned by tycoon Carlyle (William Fichtner, The Dark Knight). A brilliant coder, Carlyle agrees to write a program that will depose the president; but when he's killed by Max's hit squad, Max downloads the program into his new cybernetic brain, unleashing Delacourt's mercenary Kruger, played by District 9's Sharlto Copley. As Max and Frey breach Elysium, all the players gather to wage war on each other, leading to a powerful and unexpected third act.

Blomkamp channels every Science Fiction classic of the last 50 years, from the space station in Kubrick's 2001 to the lens flare of JJ Abrams' Star Trek. He loves using the slow-motion death scene, turning humans and machines into cinematic splatter. And while his literary message (he served as penner, too) is a little too egalitarian, the vision is nothing short of stunning. In a year where CGI has been all over the map, Elysium is spot on, mixing the right amount of organic so that our actors have something to actually react towards. Several of the action sequences between the robots and humans look as real as anything you'll see, partially due to Blomkamp's actors. Damon plays the tragic anti-hero with a desperate edge, while Foster oozes political cool; they're only on screen together for a paltry time, but each manages to make their mark throughout the film.

Elysium might suffer from futuristic dystopian burnout, but it also didn't get much love in the marketing department, and that will certainly play itself out as it goes head-to-head with the better advertised We're the Millers. Even so, that shouldn't be a reason for you to skip this one; because while the setting is nothing new, the rise of this director is worth catching on the big screen. Elysium is rated R for strong bloody violence and language, and has a runtime of 109 minutes.

Ronda Rousey To Join Fast & Furious 7

Following in the ass-kicking footsteps of Gina Carano, Ronda Rousey appears set to become the latest Ultimate Fighting champ to head for the Fast & Furious franchise, closing in on a deal for what is currently called Fast & Furious 7.

James Wan is taking over directorial duties for the new film, which will follow directly on from the sixth instalment and see Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and the gang plunged into what will likely be a mission of revenge after the death of one of their own at the end of that adventure.

Assuming she signs on, Rousey would take a relatively small supporting part that will let her do what she does best: cause bruises. With Michelle Rodriguez’ Letty back as part of the team, we’d imagine Rousey will have a serious challenge on her hands.

There are few confirmed details on the plot of the new movie, which is once more written by Chris Morgan, though we do know it’ll be set mostly in Los Angeles, albeit with a shoot pencilled in for Atlanta this autumn. Diesel, Rodriguez, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson and most of the crew should be back in action because what’s a Fast film without the whole crew? 2 Fast 2 Furious, that’s what, and nobody wants that.

Win Tickets To An Advance Screening THE SPECTACULAR NOW on Monday, August 12, 2013 @ 7:00PM @ Century Roseville.

“See the most spectacular movie of the summer.”

“Read the NY Times Best Seller novel by Tim Tharp.”

THE SPECTACULAR NOW is an upcoming American comedy-drama film directed by James Ponsoldt, written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (based on The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp), and starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley. The film premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley both won acting awards. Critics there gave it overwhelmingly positive reviews, saying, "John Hughes would be proud."

Sutter Keely (Miles Teller) lives in the now. It’s a good place for him. A high school senior, charming and self-possessed, he’s the life of the party, loves his job at a men’s clothing store, and has no plans for the future. A budding alcoholic, he’s never far from his supersized, whisky-fortified Thirst Master cup. But after being dumped by his girlfriend, Sutter gets drunk and wakes up on a lawn with Aimee Finicky (Shailene Woodley) hovering over him. She’s different: the “nice girl” who reads science fiction and doesn’t have a boyfriend. While Aimee has dreams of a future, Sutter lives in the impressive delusion of a spectacular now, yet somehow, they're drawn together.

The Counselor Trailer Starring Michael Fassbender & Brad Pitt

The Counselor or The Counsellor? It depends if you're American (the former) or British (the latter), but really, it doesn't much matter. All that counts is that this is Ridley Scott directing a Cormac McCarthy script, with Michael Fassbender starring alongside Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Brad Pitt.

The film also comes laden with slightly less well-known acting goodness in the form of Goran Visnjic, Bruno Ganz, Natalie Dormer and even Breaking Bad’s Hank, Dean Norris, who all show up in the No Country For Old Men writer's tale of crime, corruption and one man getting into very deep doo-doo.

Despite his belief that he can get involved with narco-trading, make a mint and pull the escape cord any time he likes, Fassbender’s main man soon ends up in real trouble, on the run from seriously nasty people. As Bardem says, “You won’t see it coming.”

On behalf of IFC Films we are pleased to share the official trailer for their upcoming film, DEVIL'S PASS. Directed by Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger), the film follows five American college students as they explore the infamous Dyatlov’s Pass in hopes of uncovering the mystery of nine Russian hikers who made the same trek in 1959 – only to be found dead two weeks later.

The real life mystery of the Dyatlov Pass Incident has baffled investigators and researchers for decades, and rumors have attributed their strange deaths to everything from alien encounters to government conspiracies. Check out the brand new trailer to join a new generation of explorers as they make their way through the infamous Ural Mountains and uncover secrets more shocking than they could have ever imagined.

DEVIL'S PASS opens in select theaters and will be available on cable VOD, as well as digital platforms (including iTunes and SundanceNow) on August 23rd.

Fact: In February of 1959, nine Russian hikers ventured into a remote area of the Ural Mountains in Russia.

Fact: Two weeks later, all nine were found dead.

What happened to them is a mystery that has baffled investigators and researchers for decades. It has become known as the Dyatlov Pass Incident.

Rumors have attributed their deaths to everything from alien encounters and government conspiracies to supernatural causes. To date, no one has been able to adequately explain what drove nine experienced hikers from their tents so frantically that they ripped through the material from the inside; or how their bodies came to be exposed to such dangerous amounts of radiation that it was still detected weeks later. And no one knows why they were discovered hundreds of yards from their camp, half dressed and with internal injuries including broken ribs and fractured skulls, but with no external wounds at all. The body of one young woman was even missing her tongue.

Present Day: Five ambitious American college students are issued a grant to return to the site of the original events in the belief that they can uncover and document the truth of what happened at Dyatlov’s Pass. But what they find is more shocking than anything they could have imagined. Their trek through the Ural Mountains, retracing the steps of that ill-fated journey, is plagued by strange and increasingly terrifying phenomena, all of which suggest that in spite of their desolate surroundings, they are not alone. The forces behind the Dyatlov Pass Incident have been waiting for them.

The students’ recently recovered footage – the only clue to what happened to them – was deemed too disturbing for public eyes. But, like everything else connected to Dyatlov’s Pass, the truth has found its way out.

Sam Rockwell In Talks To Star In Poltergeist Reboot

After stealing every scene in "The Way Way Back," Sam Rockwell is in early talks to star opposite Rosemarie DeWitt in MGM and Fox 2000's "Poltergeist" reboot, TheWrap has learned.

Rockwell is currently weighing several movie offers and hasn't officially decided to take the part, though an individual familiar with the project tells TheWrap that Rockwell is now the filmmakers' top choice -- and that the actor is intrigued by the prospect of a lead role in a studio movie produced by horror maestro Sam Raimi.

Rockwell's representatives did not respond to multiple requests for comment. MGM, which is co-financing, had no comment.

Gil Kenan ("Monster House") is directing the "Poltergeist" remake from a script by David Lindsay-Abaire, who penned "Oz: The Great and Powerful" for Raimi.

Should a deal work out, Rockwell would play the patriarch of the Bowen family -- they were the Freeling family in the original -- whose lives are uprooted when youngest daughter Madison (originally Carol Anne) is abducted by supernatural forces that trap her in the netherworld between life and death.

Craig T. Nelson and Jobeth Williams starred in Tobe Hooper's original 1982 classic, which was co-written and produced by Steven Spielberg.

Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce the "Poltergeist" reboot via their Ghost House Pictures banner along with Roy Lee, while Nathan Kahane will executive produce. 20th Century Fox will handle marketing and worldwide distribution.

Rockwell seems to be a favorite of the Fox family, having starred in the studio's 2011 comedy "The Sitter" as well as at least five Fox Searchlight movies including "Choke," "Joshua," "Conviction," "Gentlemen Broncos" and "The Way Way Back," which is currently in theaters.

Rockwell will soon be seen as the lead in the indie films "Better Living Through Chemistry" with Olivia Wilde and "A Single Shot" with William H. Macy. The "Iron Man 2" star has also wrapped Lynn Shelton's "Laggies" with Keira Knightley and Chloe Moretz, Adam Rapp's "Why Now?" with Marisa Tomei and Kat Coiro's ensemble comedy "A Case of You." He's repped by the Gersh Agency and Untitled Entertainment.

Blue Jasmine Review. Why Is Woody Allen Still Allowed To Make Movies?

 Blue Jasmine Review
By: MattInRC

The Woody Allen drama Blue Jasmine wants to be something special, but we know better.

Director Woody Allen is persona non grata in our home, having stolen the 1978 Oscar for Annie Hall from Star Wars: Episode IV. That was a dark day in movie history, even though we can thank Allen for introducing us to the modern comedy. But that was four decades and an odd marriage ago, and Allen seems more like someone who would rather surround his movies with a vast array of stars rather than just tell good stories. Blue Jasmine not only proves this status quo but that his seventy-something mentality went out of style years ago.

The former socialite-turned-basketcase Jasmine (Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth) is in serious trouble. Fresh off an FBI investigation over her philandering big-business husband Hal (Alec Baldwin, The Hunt for Red October), Jasmine has relocated to San Francisco, where her sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins, Layer Cake) is forced to take her in. The two couldn't be more different: Jasmine struts in fine New York clothing and Hermes' handbags, while Sally lives in a small apartment and dates loser guys like the emotional Chili (Bobby Cannavale, Parker). We learn through flashbacks that Hal was arrested and later committed suicide in jail, leaving Jasmine a blithering mess who's destined to roam the streets talking to herself. Coping with a cocktail of Xanax and vodka, she decides the only way to get back her old life is to learn computers so she can take an online interior decorating class. But you can't take the rich out of her, and the transition is too much for her. Jasmine's last chance at grasping the remains of her old life is presented by the wealthy and politically connected Dwight (Peter Skarsgaard, Jarhead), who has no idea of her checkered past. Stuck in a dead-end job as a dentist receptionist and forced to deal with Ginger's working-man mentality, Jasmine slowly descends into a pit from which she'll never escape.

This isn't the first time Allen has made stories about people trying to be something they're not, but Jasmine is filled with too many errors in the storytelling for Blanchett to convince us that they're stories worth telling. She turns in a terrific performance nonetheless, straddling the line between laughable, pitiful, and certifiable. Her slow descent into madness is both hilarious and poignant, but it's ultimately for not. Allen is so stuck on observing people in what he perceives are their natural habitat that he misses the basic human traits that he's trying to portray. You don't witness a violent break up between Chili and Ginger, only to find the couple later loving each other again as if nothing happened. Is Jasmine so disconnected from society that she can use an iPhone but not a computer? Allen doesn't help the audience through this twisted logic, settling instead on a personal message about his own life. With too many stories to tell, Blue Jasmine degrades into an exercise of self-pity, content to toss melodramatic crap on the wall to see if it sticks. And don't get me started here on the racial and sexual bleaching of Allen's San Francisco. If the intention was to make a nonsensical movie filled with people whom Allen believes to reside there, then mark the box as mission completed.

More celebrated critics would like us to think Blue Jasmine is an early Oscar contender, but we know better - its moderately-engaging tone only makes us just wish someone would get Jasmine the help she needs. And while the ending is not what I would have envisioned or expected, it doesn't do enough along the way to make us care enough when it's revealed. Don't believe the hype. Blue Jasmine is rated PG-13 and has a runtime of 98 minutes.

If you are looking for a rip-roaring good time for the whole family, “Planes” is the movie for you! Disney brings to life the world in the sky in this action-packed, fun-loving thriller that brings you to the world of “Planes”.

Dusty (voiced by Dane Cook) is a humble crop-duster with a big dream, a dream to compete in a plane race around the globe amongst the fastest planes from all over the world. But coming from the corn fields of Nebraska, Dusty has a long road to travel before he can achieve his dream. Along with the help of his beloved friends Leadbottom (Cedric the Entertainer), Chug (Brad Garrett), Dottie (Teri Hatcher) and Skipper (Stacy Keach), “Planes” takes on the adventure that gives you soaring highs as well as valley lows. Dusty makes new friends, who are destined to become some of Disney’s most enduring characters, along his adventure. We’re introduced to the feisty and romantic, El Chupacabra (Carlos Alazaraqui) from Mexico, whose love song was one of the hits of the show, as well as Bulldog (John Cleese), an arrogant Brit with the best one-liner of the movie! We meet Ishani (Priyanka Chopra), a beautiful and captivating plane from India who catches Dusty’s eye and Rochelle (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), the French Canadian who plays hard-to-get with El Chupacbra (side note: if you watched “Seinfeld” and remember the “Rochelle Rochelle” episode, it made hearing Julia Louis-Dreyfus was voicing “Rochelle” that much more fun!). We are also introduced to Disney’s newest villain, Ripslinger. He’s Dusty’s biggest competitor and he’s not going down without a fight.

“Planes” has the feel of Disney’s beloved story “Cars”. With similar characters, storylines, graphics and just about everything else, you do feel like you are back in good-old Radiator Springs. They even threw in the entertaining cow tractors for good measure. I kept waiting for Lightning McQueen to appear and say “Cha-Ching”. The similarities give you a warm fuzzy feeling that makes you feel like you have found an old friend, but “Planes” was a strong enough story to hold its own in comparison to its beloved mentor. Fans of the movie “Cars” will fall in love with “Planes” as well!

“Planes” was propelled with an adventurous storyline, enduring characters and many, many great laughs. Whether you are one or a hundred-and-one, “Planes” will leave you feeling exhilarated and ready to soar to new heights!

McQuarrie will direct from a screenplay by Drew Pearce, with Tom Cruise reprising the iconic role of Ethan Hunt, who was first introduced to moviegoers in 1996. The project will be produced by Cruise through Tom Cruise Productions, Paramount and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, who served as producers on previous films in the hit series. Skydance Productions, who served as co-financers and executive producers of the last installment, will work closely with the team in the development and production process.

“I am thrilled to reunite with Chris for the latest installment in the Mission series," said Cruise. “I began producing the films with the goal that a different director with his own vision would make each one. Chris is an extraordinary filmmaker who will deliver the heart-pounding action and thrills that audiences around the world have come to expect from the Mission: Impossible franchise.”

Added Adam Goodman, President of Paramount Film Group: “The Mission series is special for its signature directors; Chris McQuarrie keeps this tradition thriving.”

McQuarrie recently wrote and directed “JACK REACHER” for Paramount and Skydance, with Cruise in the title role, based on the novels by New York Times bestselling author Lee Child. His screenwriting credits include the upcoming “EDGE OF TOMORROW” and 2008’s “VALKYRIE,” both starring Cruise, as well as “THE USUAL SUSPECTS,” for which he earned an Academy Award® for best screenplay in 1995.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL,” the 4th installment in the globally successful franchise, earned nearly $700M around the world and became Cruise’s highest grossing film to date in his storied career.

The “MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE” franchise has earned more than $2B at the worldwide box office, making it one of the most successful franchises in movie history.

Is Denzel Washington Most Bankable Hollywood Star?

Denzel does have a habit of delivering more than $20 million in box office receipts whenever one of his movies opens. The latest release, "2 Guns", is no exception, having logged $27.4 million this past weekend. That's certainly not as stellar as, say, "Safe House" ($40.2 million) or "The Book of Eli" ($32.8 million) but it's better than "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" ($23.4 million). Even the Oscar-bait movie "Flight" has made money, and that's saying something for a movie where all the action comes in the first 15 minutes.

In historical context, it's clear that "2 Guns" didn’t, um, blow the box office away, but Washington still seems to be having a better summer than many. (Right, Ryan Reynolds?) Sure, Johnny Depp's "Lone Ranger" brought in roughly the same amount in its opening weekend earlier this season — but that flick was a $250 million production. As opposed to, you know, "2 Guns", which cost a modest-by-comparison $61 million (not counting its marketing budget). Still, the gun-slinging Denzel flick is much more likely to break even.

So: Is Washington the biggest, or at least the most financially reliable, star on Earth right now?
Well, dataheads sure like him. Ray Subers at Box Office Mojo calls Washington "one of the most consistently bankable stars in the business."

If the first rule for a Hollywood star, like a doctor is "do no harm", then Denzel starts out on solid ground. He has avoided spectacular bombs like "Lone Ranger" or risky giant bets such as Brad Pitt's "World War Z."
Washington's films rarely end up earning the kind of world-devouring money that Depp or Robert Downey Jr's big hits do. The biggest grosser of his career, "American Gangster," earned a nice but-by-Hollywood-standards not jaw-dropping $266 million worldwide. Compare that with Depp whose two biggest "Pirates" film have crossed the billion mark. But if the payoff is smaller, the bet is safer.

And there is one more factor we should consider: The Ulmer Scale. In essence, Hollywood journalist James Ulmer created this ranking which measures the financial value of a star. It doesn't predict box office, but it calculates something equally important: The chances that, by hiring a certain actor, producers will make all of their money back in pre-sales before a single frame of a movie has been shot.

Interestingly, Depp and Brad Pitt currently enjoy a top Ulmer score of 100; if hired, Ulmer predicts that their employers absolutely, without a doubt, will make money, essentially. Or at least break even.
Washington? His current score is 98.

"Johnny Depp is our gold standard when it comes to Ulmer," casting director Bonnie Gillespie explains. "Denzel has a 98 Ulmer score, but he's one of those people who's known as making really good choices. It's not that the other guys make poor choices, but sometimes they've been thrown an awful lot of money to do something that is spectacularly bad."

Counting Depp's recent bomb and Pitt’s "World War Z" — the latter of which only recently made its money back on a giant production budget of $170 million — don’t be shocked if next year's Ulmer scale comes out with new numbers favoring Washington.

"Denzel Washington is Mr. Consistency at the box office, no doubt about it," Exhibitor Relations box office analyst Jeff Bock tells Yahoo! Movies. "However, that makes him more of a Paul Pierce than a LeBron James. ... Or, if you'd rather do a golf metaphor — he stays on the fairway, but seldom drives it all the way to the green."

2 Guns Shoots Down Competition

Worldwide, the box office belonged to the small, blue types called Smurfs, but American audiences seemed more inclined to watch Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington shoot a lot. Action thriller 2 Guns took the top spot across the pond, earning $27.3 million. It displaced The Wolverine, which fell to second and made $21.7 million. The Smurfs sequel still had an impact in the states, though, taking in $18.2 million.

The Conjuring continued to do well, adding $13.6 million in fourth for a current US total of $108.5 million. Rounding out the top five was Despicable Me 2 with $10.3 million.

Grown Ups 2 fell one place to sixth, making $8.1 million, while snail ‘toon Turbo dropped from fourth to seventh, taking in $6.4 million. Red 2 was eighth with $5.6 million, while The Heat was ninth with $4.7 million. Finally, Pacific Rim was 10th, earning $4.7 million, for a running total of $92.9 million in the States - which suggests it might yet squeak past the $100m mark and regain its blockbuster cred.

Your 12th Doctor Is Peter Capaldi

It’s somehow heartening that, years after it was written off as a joke, shoved into limbo and left to moulder, Doctor Who has now evolved – or re-generated – into something special enough to warrant an entire live show built around the annoucement of the next occupant of the TARDIS. Now, in its 50th year, we know that the 12th incarnation will be Peter Capaldi.

Capaldi, who is still probably best known as the foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker from The Thick Of It (and to some, forever as the Angel Islington from TV's Neverwhere), will be outsmarting evil, running around, making silly jokes and generally being a meddling mad man with a box. Matt Smith will re-generate into Capaldi's form during the Christmas special this year. “I’m surprised to see the Doctor looking back in the mirror,” he said in the announcement show. “He’s not there yet, but he’s reaching out.”

Bets have been taken for months on the identity of the new Doctor, since the role has these days taken on the fervour of a huge sporting event or picking the new Pope. Suggestions have run the gamut from bookies’ favourite Capaldi to baby Prince George. But without any disrespect to the third in line to the throne, Capaldi is a fantastic choice, someone with some age and experience on his side. Plus, he has form with Team Who, having appeared in 2008's The Fires Of Pompeii and Torchwood's Children Of Earth. He even wrote to The Radio Times about his love of the Doctor when he was only 15, so you know he's not faking enthusiasm to get the role (unless he's been planning this for a very long time).

The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special meanwhile, will be broadcast on November 23.
