Mötley Crüe Biopic "The Dirt" Heading To Netflix

The long-gestating project, which at one point called Paramount and Focus Features home sweet home, is in negotiations to land at Netflix, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Jeff Tremaine, the helmer of the Jackass movies, is attached to direct the project, which has a script by Rich Wilkes and Tom Kapinos.

The project is based on The New York Times bestselling autobiography The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band, which was written by Mötley Crüe members Tommy Lee, Vince Neil, Mick Mars and Nikki Sixx, as well as author Neil Strauss.

The book was a no-holds-barred account of the iconic 1980s band's rise to top of the hair metal and rock scene, all while experiencing a guitar case's worth of drug overdoses, sex with slinky babes, run-ins with the police and in-fighting.

The project was last at Focus, which picked it up in January 2015. Before that it was at Paramount where directors such as David Fincher and Larry Charles were sweet on it.

Julie Yorn, Erik Olsen, and Allen Kovac remain on board as producers. Chris Nilsson, Steven Kline, and Rick Yorn are executive-producing.

The band members are co-producers on the film. Amanda Adelson is also a co-producer.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Poster

He might be a primary protector of New York City, but at heart, Peter Parker is still just a teenager. And what do most teenagers do these days? NOTHING, THAT'S WHAT. They like to "chill" with their "Pokemon Go"s and their digital watches and such. Tch. In our day we.... Sorry, got off track there. Here's Peter having a restful moment on the new Spider-Man: Homecoming poster.

Peter here, of course is played by Tom Holland (but not that one, or that one), a teen hero living the dream of fighting crime thanks to superpowers, who nevertheless still has to balance the concerns of school work, relationships and working out his place in a world where the Avengers exist. Oh, and the small matter of a deadly new villain in the shape of Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes, AKA The Vulture.

Jon Watts is in the director's chair, while the cast also includes Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, and Tony Revolori, with Marisa Tomei back as Peter's Aunt May and Robert Downey Jr. helping out as Tony "Iron Man" Stark.

Movie Review: #CHiPs

The raunch of CHiPs makes it a great comedic ride down the California highway.

As a young teen, I spent more than enough time in front of the television, absorbed in now-forgettable series like CHiPs. But there are elements of this campy comedy/drama that still resonate: the excellent motorcycle sequences, those awesome Harley Davidsons, the groovy Big Band music from Season 1. Its revival in theaters this week reflects little of the series' original DNA, but it still works as a hilarious raunchy re-imagining and perhaps a blueprint for a potential franchise.

As the FBI pursues corruption within the California Highway Patrol, it assigns one of its agents (Michael Pena) to go undercover as Frank 'Ponch' Poncherello, who secretly harbors sexual desires for any woman in yoga pants, masturbating three times or more before lunch. He's teamed up with the oldest recruit in the CHP, the former motorcycle stunt rider Jon Baker (Dax Shepard), who needs this job to prove to his ex-wife (real-life wife Kristen Bell) that he's worthy. But Baker can barely stand, having broken nearly every bone in his body over his career, and Ponch thinks he's an inconsiderate fool who doesn't deserve the job. But when the corrupt officers are exposed - including veteran Vic Brown (Vincent D'Onofrio) - Jon and Ponch must put aside their differences to nab Brown and his crew before they can escape the border with millions in stolen cash.

Some will find a myriad of flaws in CHiPs: a story whose characters are merely there to advance the action and crude jokes, an over-reliance on homophobia, and a conclusion that can be seen a California highway away. If you're one of those types who poo-poo remakes like these, then you're likely not the person this movie is hoping to attract. And that's too bad, because the comedy is some of the best of 2017 so far. Pena and Shepard enjoy terrific chemistry, letting Shepard's script serve as a jumping-off point for some great ad libs. Some critics have claimed that Pena has been poorly cast, but I think it shows just how great of an actor he is, effortlessly gliding through the admittedly thin script while more than holding his own against Shepard. For Shepard, this is a reminder of how good an actor he is, as he recently finished a dramatic role in Parenthood. Both come to their respective middles and leave thoroughly entertaining us.

Shepard the director shoots some really excellent motorcycle scenes, something which the original CHiPs did so well and for so long. As a kid, it was the first time I could remember a television show spending that kind of money to show bikes from such unique angles. Here, Shepard and Stunt Coordinator Steve DeCastro do the same thing with largely the same results. I also enjoyed how crystal clear Shepard's cameras are, courtesy of DP Mitchell Amundsen who's been involved in plenty of great action flicks. But it's Shepard's ability to merge the action with the raunch that make CHiPs so damn fun. Add in the tough psycho of D'Onofrio who seems like he's perpetually about to go all Winter Soldier on someone - along with some admittedly over-the-top nudity - and you've got a really fun experience in store. If anyone goes to this movie thinking they're going to get anything more, then you're kidding yourself.

And yet, I'd be remiss if I didn't at least mention some of CHiPs' faults. Characters who seem to be ready for larger roles - such Adam Brody, Ryan Hansen, Richard T. Jones, and Jane Kaczmarek - all disappear into the background with a suddenness that feels like the movie was massively edited. The CHiPs theme is really there either, save for a few recognizable notes; moreover, it doesn't feel like a CHiPs movie. But in the larger picture, I can't imagine an 80's throwback version that would have worked. Frank and John never (EVER) drew their guns in the first few seasons, let alone fired them, and the cheesiness of the series really took over what could have been a great cop drama. I doubt there are many fans left of this series to cast their anger over what could be seen a huge misfire; but for me and the audience who laughed loud and often throughout, it seems like Shepard might have found a winning formula.

CHiPs is as raunchy as they come, but Shepard's sometimes slick direction and spot-on tonal changes keeps things moving towards a rewarding but entirely foreseeable conclusion. This is nowhere near the CHiPs of our youth, but I'm convinced that anything close to it was impossible without utterly failing. If this is the path Shepard and the studio wish to take, I can think of much worse ideas.

CHiPs is rated R for crude sexual content, graphic nudity, pervasive language, some violence and drug use and has a runtime of 100 minutes.

Movie Review: #Wilson

The dark comedy Wilson whipsaws too much to keep our interest.

In Director Craig Johnson's Wilson, an aged and prickly man (Woody Harrelson) rails on society with his acerbic personality, committing faux paws nearly every second in which he makes contact with other people. No urinal will keep Wilson from striking up an unwanted conversation while checking out your package, no moment of potential maturity is gained. The result of his odd behavior: he's been divorced for nearly two decades, and his friend list is quickly dwindling. Even his dog sitter (Judy Greer) has a hard time understanding the wrinkled and disheveled Wilson, when a chance encounter reminds him of his ex-wife Pippi (a sufficiently trashy Laura Dern). She too has fallen on hard times, and the two rekindle their relationship, only to reveal that Pippi had a daughter whom she gave up for adoption. As Pippi and Wilson attempt to make contact with her, they will find it nearly impossible to stay away from the portly spawn, leading to harsh consequences for Wilson.

For the first two acts of Wilson, this thing looks and feels like an underground masterpiece. The comedy is tip-top here, bolstered by Harrelson's gravely and weathered voice, which reveals some terrific "He didn't just say that!" lines directed at people unaware of the pain he's about to bring. Adding Dern to the mix only makes things better, as the two creep on their overweight daughter (Isabella Amara). When they finally make contact in a mall, Wilson strikes against three teens who've decided to make Claire's life a living hell, literally diving at one of them. They ride on kiddie trains, eat ice cream in the park, and it's all a cooky, crazy hilarious time.

But then Wilson moves into a very place, as Wilson finds himself behind bars (apparently, he forgot to mention to Claire's adoptive family about his intentions). Any inertia is robbed in the soul-sucking third act, which feels like a completely different movie. The tonal shift is courtesy of Writer Daniel Clowes - who also wrote the book - proving once again that a screenplay by the book's author just doesn't work. That whipsaw is jarring, and it only gets worse after Wilson is released, as he sees his neighborhood change, his relationships ended, and even a death of loved one. That is not where I thought this one would go, and it's easily the most disappointing moves I've seen this year from a film. Wilson feels like two movies Frankensteined together, making each one better than the whole. Luckily, the film is well-cast, with Dern and Harrelson tooling around town like their own personality wrecking crew, with Dern the hammer and Wilson the nail. They feed off each other amazingly, donning sailor mouths and happy to piss in the pool of each other's lives. It makes for some of the best parts of the movie, but there's plenty of this comedy that's almost worth checking out. Almost.

Wilson fails magnificently, suffering from too many tonal changes without explaining why it chooses to go that way. It's like watching the final episode of Seinfeld after witnessing one of the best seasons of any show, ever. This one will soon find its way into the Blu-ray bin, local cable stations, and Netflix streaming. There, you can witness the quintessential example of a project that either got away from Director Johnson, was altered by the studio, or simply didn't know what it wanted to be in the first place. But you've got too much better stuff to watch so let this one die an honorable death for a heinous crime.

Wilson is rated R for language throughout and some sexuality and has a runtime of 94 minutes.

Movie Review: Power Rangers

Go go see a better movie.

I confess straight out of the gate here, I don’t possess much familiarity with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. When the original series debuted in 1993, I was officially too old to count myself among its target audience. I never saw an episode, never saw the 1995 feature film and truly only am aware of the things that anyone would have picked up via cultural osmosis during its heyday. I knew it concerned five teenagers with superpowers who wore colorful jumpsuits and helmets (with disturbing artificial metallic mouths). I knew they fought monsters of the excessively cheesy, Japan-made Godzilla variety, with men in rubber suits. I knew Voltron was being not-so-subtly ripped off. I heard tell that many young men were quite taken with the Pink Ranger. And that’s all I’ve got.

So when it comes to reviewing the new big-screen reboot—pared down to the more succinct Power Rangers; it’s cleaner—I’m not bringing anything in with me. I have no affection nor disdain for the Power Rangers franchise. From the outside, it seemed goofy to me as a teen, but what, like He-Man wasn’t? Coming in as a blank slate, what I can tell you is that this new Power Rangers is very much in line with modern reboots. It’s slickly made, a touch “grittier” than its candy-colored roots, it borrows a lot from other contemporary blockbusters (many of which are reboots themselves) and it’s mostly quite bland. Still, I can report that the die-hard Ranger fans, who not only appear to still exist but were present in full force at the screening I attended, went nuts for it, so there you go.


In the sleepy haven of Angel Grove, CA, Jason Scott (Dacre Montgomery) gets busted pulling a cockamamie prank involving a cow at school one night and is left with a house-arrest monitor around his ankle and a disappointed dad (David Denman). He also winds up in detention, where he comes to the bully-busting defense of the mildly autistic Billy (RJ Cyler). Billy latches onto his protector as his new best friend, promising to neutralize Jason’s electronic shackle if he accompanies Billy on an impromptu excavation in the hills nearby. Out there, they encounter fellow outcasts Kimberly (Naomi Scott), Zack (Ludi Lin) and Trini (Becky G, some sort of Mila Kunis/Selena Gomez hybrid), and the whole lot of them discover a protruding rock formation that releases five mystical coins of varying colors.

With each kid now in possession of a coin, they collectively discover that they all now wield superhuman strength and an imperviousness to bodily harm. They also uncover an underground spaceship containing a wisecracking robot (Bill Hader, but I would have put money on Patton Oswalt) and the giant-faced essence of the fallen warrior Zordon (Bryan Cranston, bringing gravity to what should be a zero-gravity role), who informs the group that they are the latest incarnation of the Power Rangers, a team that functions as guardians of the galaxy. Zordon trains the group and attempts to get them to function as a unit to achieve their full potential, which they’ll need to realize quickly because they’re only days away from a showdown with Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks, the only cast member who seems to know precisely what movie she’s in), a former Ranger who has gone bad.

Power Rangers is a film with an identity crisis. It’s a two-hour film, yet it takes an eternity to put its heroes into their rainbow-hued getups and bring out the monsters, palpably embarrassed to become the very thing that it must. It gets there eventually, offering up a finale filled with a big-budget (yet still appropriately schlocky-looking) take on the kicky, goofy action that transfixed grade-schoolers in 1994, but it’s in no rush to arrive at this predetermined destination. For most of its run, the film comes across like a more polished, less ambitious rehash of Chronicle, with its moody young heroes getting a handle on both their newfound abilities and their relationships with one another. Power Rangers can’t decide if it wants to be the sober version of this material or the cartoon blitzkrieg that people expect of it, so bets are hedged.


What the film does very badly want to be is a superhero Breakfast Club, with five outsiders coming together as a whole, but these characters aren’t up to that challenge. Apart from the enthusiastically nerdy Billy, the others are all riffs on the same moody, misunderstood teen archetype. There is ostensibly nothing to distinguish Kimberly, Zack or Trini from one another, and Jason only stands out from the pack by dint of being highlighted as the noble, whitebread leader. Trini, in particular, is dropped into the movie in a strikingly unceremonious manner. It’s tough to craft a story about characters forming bonds with each other when you have failed in not only establishing distinctive characters but distinctive character types.

Power Rangers also wants to be other movies as well. It swipes its aesthetic from not both the Marvel films (it can’t be disputed that the costume designer had Tony Stark on the brain) and the Transformers series (which it even directly references). Its characters all feel like bland holdovers from any given YA would-be franchise. The whole thing feels as much a pastiche of contemporary blockbuster filmmaking as it does a Power Rangers adaptation. The only thing truly surprising about its wholesale mimicry of everything that’s made money in the past ten years is that it also flagrantly boosted the synth-heavy theme music from Stranger Things, and even that is only noteworthy for how little time has passed since Stranger Things became a cultural phenomenon. They got that theft in under the wire.

The best thing about Power Rangers is cosmetic, but laudable—the cast is a true melting pot. The team consists of members of black, Indian, Asian and Mexican heritages, making the team as diverse from one another as their contrasting primary-color duds (of course, the white guy is still the leader and main character). This was also true of the original cast, but it’s refreshing to see that element ported over. It would be even better if some of that heterogeneity had been brought to any other aspect of this crushingly bland franchise bid because Power Rangers is mighty amorphous.

Coming To Netflix In April

Tropic Thunder is coming to Netflix next month.

Jake Gyllenhaal To Star In The Anarchists vs. ISIS

THR is reporting Jake Gyllenhaal is reteaming with his Life director Daniel Espinosa for an adaptation of the Rolling Stone article, "The Anarchists vs. ISIS."

Espinosa is set to direct the film adaptation and will produce under his newly formed production banner BOZI alongside Ninestories’ producers Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker. Bold Films chairman Michel Litvak will also produce, and CEO Gary Michael Walters will executive produce.

The Rolling Stone article, written by Seth Harp, tells the true story of a ragtag team of American volunteers, socialists and outcasts who are fighting alongside the Kurdish militia known as the YPG to beat ISIS in Syria and establish an anarchist collective amid the rubble of war.

“Thematically, we’re often attracted to material about the search for identity, especially in a world where it’s become easier to feel less and less connected," said Marker in a statement. "Seth’s story is about people who abandon everything that’s familiar as a means to connect in the most brutal of circumstances.”

Opening Friday, Life features Gyllenhaal in a sci-fi thriller about astronauts on a space station that discover an alien organism. Espinosa directed the movie, in which Ryan Reynolds also stars.

The collaboration went so well that Espinosa and Gyllenhaal began talking about other projects on which to work together.

Gyllenhaal’s Ninestories is in postproduction on David Gordon Green’s Boston Marathon bombing Stronger. The company has a deal with Bold, which financed and produced Gyllenhaal’s acclaimed 2014 drama Nightcrawler.
