Movie Review: 'Mistress America'

The the well-intentioned Mistress America is true independent comedy, and that's not a good thing. Review by Matt Cummings Actress Greta Gerwig and Director Noah Baumbach hit paydirt with 2012's Frances Ha , showing that that Sacramento-born actress and Brooklyn helmer could craft a funny, poignant comedy about struggling to identify your place in the world. But 2015 already producing a strand of very good independent comedies - Dope , While We're Young , and The DUFF among them - Mistress America arrives feeling a bit rushed, stumbling often, but ultimately delivering a decent quirky time. The 18-year-old Tracy (Lola Kirke) is facing more than the challenges of her first semester in college would suggest: her mother is getting married to a conservative Catholic, she struggles to maintain a social life, and an effort to join the campus' Morbus Literary Society has utterly failed. Desperate for friends, she contacts her soon-to-be sister Brooke (Gerwig)

Movie Review: While We're Young

While We're Young is quirky comedy genius that should make Woody Allen very jealous. Review by Matt Cummings In Noah Baumbach's While We're Young , the struggling documentary filmmaker Josh (Ben Stiller) is at a professional crossroads: his project has been incubating for 9 years, stuck in a self-important loop with no clear direction, while his wife Cordelia (Naomi Watts) sees Josh slowly growing less flexible and spontaneous. But all that changes when a blast of fresh air courtesy of hipsters Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried) reinvigorate the elder couple's lives, infusing them with Sinatra-style hats, a democratic music collection, and a finger-on-the-pulse connection to Brooklyn. Jamie is an aspiring filmmaker and soon finds himself attached to Josh like a son to a father; each begins to emulate the other, and before long they find themselves working on a project that Josh is initially unwilling to undertake. As secrets are exposed about

WHILE WE'RE YOUNG Official Trailer

A film written and directed by Noah Baumbach, starring Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver, Amanda Seyfried, Charles Grodin and Adam Horovitz. Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts are Josh and Cornelia Srebnick, happily married middle-aged members of New York's creative class. They tried to start a family and were unable to — and have decided they’re okay with that. But as Josh labors over the umpteenth edit of his cerebral new film, it’s plain that he has hit a dry patch and that something is still missing. Enter Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried), a free-spirited young couple, who are spontaneous and untethered, ready to drop everything in pursuit of their next passion — retro board games one day, acquiring a pet chicken the next. For Josh, it’s as if a door has opened back to his youth — or a youth he wishes he once had. It’s not long before the restless forty-somethings, Josh and Cornelia, throw aside friends their own age — including Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz in

Ben Stiller & James Franco To Star In "While We’re Young"

While We’re Young To Star Stiller & Franco Noah Baumbach is readying a Greenberg reunion of sorts: Vulture spies tell us that the writer-director is just now setting up his next project, While We’re Young , with Ben Stiller and James Franco already attached to star, and the project on offer to Greta Gerwig and to Cate Blanchett . Longtime Baumbach producer Scott Rudin (Greenberg, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Margot at the Wedding) will again produce. The script is being kept under tight security, but we’re told that it’s about a free-spirited Brooklynite twentysomething couple (Franco — and, possibly, Gerwig) who inspire an uptight documentarian (Stiller) and his wife (possibly Blanchett, pending the resolution of some scheduling issues) to loosen up — with comedic consequences. We’re told the role on offer to Blanchett was likely originally intended for Baumbach’s Greenberg co-writer and spouse, Jennifer Jason Leigh , but since she just filed for divorce from the director la

“Tower Heist" Lands Ben Stiller And Noah Baumbach

“Tower Heist" Lands Ben Stiller And Noah Baumbach “Tower Heist,” Brett Ratner’s next film, is going full speed ahead at Universal. I’m told that Noah Baumbach has just been signed to polish up the screenplay originally written by Ted Griffin. Back then it was envisioned as a black “Ocean’s Eleven,” with Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock being talked about as the leads. (Indeed, Griffin wrote “Oceans.”) But time does a funny thing to movie projects. “Tower Heist” now looks like it will star Ben Stiller overseeing a cast of guys that could be all colors — maybe even blue, considering recent events in film land. The story has also changed somewhat, from being a pure heist movie to the story of a bunch of blue collar guys on a mercy mission. It turns out the main tenant of this Trump Tower-like building has bilked the employees’ pension fund in a huge Ponzi scheme. More details I don’t want to give away, but word is that Ratner, of course, would probably like James Caan to play that charac
