#StarWarsSmugglersBounty Review: March 2016

Even in an off month, The Star Wars/Funko Smuggler's Bounty sub box is never dull.

Review by Matt Cummings

As the nature of geek boxes continues to pan out as we expected - with whipsaw efforts from now-lesser boxes - Star Wars and Marvel Collector Corps continue their unequalled dominance. This is more true when you look at March's Star Wars box. Although there's no new movie out - and none planned until December's Rogue One - the box is far superior to those by Geek Fuel and Loot Crate (which we've now cancelled). With this month's theme as CANTINA, we see SB giving us a nice collection of items with only one item failing to connect.

Before diving in, let's review the details:
  • The cost for a Month to Month is $25 (plus S/H), or $150 (plus S/H) for a one-year subscription.
  • You get one box every other month, with SB promising $50 in value and no fluff.
  • If you choose the Smuggler membership (yearly), you are promised an additional gift on your anniversary. Guess which one we chose.

  • Again, this month's theme is CANTINA, highlighting some of the tough customers who frequented Tatoonie's Mos Eisley Space Port. Check out our unboxing below and we'll meet you on the back end to share some thoughts:

    Winners
Where to start...the Hammerhead shirt (one of of four), the pin/patch set, or the two exclusive Funko Pop! figures? Obviously, so much in here screams gobs of quality. Say what you want about the side entries in these boxes, these Pop! figures continue to shine. Although we did not get one of the Blue Snaggletooths, we loved the elder Ben Kenobi. No wonder why SandwichJohn himself collects this line with such ferocity. We're definitely going to look on the secondary market for the other shirts, especially the Han Solo one. Maybe I can trade some of the lame Geek Fuel items? That's what it's come to these days, but let's hope Bounty eventually offers these shirts for sale like Loot Crate does with some of its gear (because they never sell out due to their general lameness).

    Losers
Unlike January's hack Funko C3PO mug, the only lame item is the throw-in Chewbacca pen. It's not awful, but that's a Hot Topic item if I ever saw one. Even with that small hiccup, we're generally happy with this box. That news might be more worthy than what's in the box! We're actually smiling right now, which should also be a surprise.

    Back on Track?
The third outing for Smuggler's Bounty delivers another solid box, complete with all the elements that have become hallmarks of this line and Marvel's Collector Corps. The shirt is cool (I want more!) and the figures are nice (as always), but I hope the throw-in pen isn't the shape of things to come. These boxes are clearly more for adults and older teens, so let's hope they keep the silly down to a minimum. On the whole, it's still a win, and we can't wait for next month's BOUNTY HUNTERS.

The big question going forward is whether this and other boxes will succumb to the no-fluff promise. With a monthly plan in place SB needs to step it up with more consistency than it's showed. I'd rather have smaller, better quality boxes than the sometimes hodge-podge nature we've gotten. There's little doubt that quality is high (on most items), but we'll see if BOUNTY HUNTERS makes our case or not.

    #GeekFuel Review: March 2016

March's Geek Fuel sets its sights high and mostly achieves them. Mostly.

    Review by Matt Cummings

As the dead of winter gives way a breath of fresh spring air, we couldn't help but wonder why the same love didn't happen for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Hoping the superhero team up would lead to big bankrolls, Geek Fuel and other subscription boxes hopped onboard. But just like them movie, March's box achieves only some of its goals.

Before diving in, let's review the details:
  • The cost for a Month to Month is $17.90, $16.90/month for a 3-month subscription, $15.90/month for a 6-month tour and just $13.90/month for a one-year subscription.
  • Shipping $6.00 to the US, Canada, and at least a few other countries.

  • We use QUALITY and TIMING to base our reviews, so let's see how this box stands up. As always, we'll end our review with some additional thoughts after the unboxing:
    Winners
For sure, the superhero t-shirt ios legit. The eyes remind us of the classic Star Trek TOS episode Let This Be Your Last Battlefield. I also like the thought of "mystery" boxes which we got with the vinyl figure. Not sure if I'll keep or sell, but the last thing I need to do start buying more vinyl figures. Having met Stan Lee, I also like the hardback graphic novel, although I have to admit that such things aren't exactly "exclusive" to GF.

    Losers
Yeah, about that. The poster is odd, considering this is the month BvS came out and we're getting a seemingly random poster and fantasy game. We should have gotten a superhero Steam game and mini-poster (preferably of Wonder Woman) instead. It's also interesting that this one feels like the smallest offering of recent efforts. That's not a bad thing, especially

    A Mostly Good Box...Mostly
Just like the BvS, March's Geek Fuel mostly delivers, hitting the heights with a fabulous shirt, a good book on Stan, and the mystery vinyl figure. The rest is out the door. So what happens in months in which huge films don't come out? Sometimes GF rises to the occasion, but it will be interesting to see how they can survive alongside such powerhouses like Star Wars, Marvel, and DC, when they have a seemingly unending amount of characters they can create for these boxes. Sure, GF has the same chance - perhaps more with so many geek properties - but their uneven effort as of late has got to change.

March's Geek Fuel is either a well-rounded effort or another frustrating head-scratcher. It contains the fewest items of any box I can remember, perhaps showing that the company is moving towards the fewer/better model, something they absolutely demonstrated with their Back to the Future box. But is there enough time (and fan money) out there to make this change? Only time will tell, and we might not hang around long enough to find out.

    Movie Review: 'Criminal'

Criminal is an ugly, weird, psychotic flick that wastes too many of its esteemed assets.

    Review by Matt Cummings

    WARNING: Major spoilers ahead.

There's not much that the spy thriller Criminal gets right, and that's too bad because its fascinating premise and great cast are outshined by a shoddy script, marginal execution, and the sense that some studio head pushed this project into the wrong direction.

The violent world of spy craft has taken another soldier, this time in murdered CIA operative Bill Pope (Ryan Reynolds). But his sacrifice yields an interesting by-product: he was on his way to pick up the launch codes for the entire American defense network, which was stolen by a shadowy character named The Dutchman (Michael Pitt). The bag's disappearance and location of The Dutchman have also spurred interest by other parties, including the psychotic anarchist Heimdahl (Jordi Molla), who desires to sell the laptop to the highest bidder in the hopes of encouraging world-wide destruction. But Pope's death won't go unnoticed: his boss Quaker Wells (Gary Oldman) learns that the cast-aside Dr. Franks (Tommy Lee Jones) has a radical method to save people's memories: by transferring them to human hosts. Unfortunately, no normal person would apply, and so Wells taps a violent destructive criminal in Jerico Stewart (Kevin Costner) to undergo the process. The wild and unpredictable Jerico has a brain disorder that Wells hopes will fill in the missing gaps of his existence while providing the location of the money bag and The Dutchman. But Jerico has his own plan, including finding Pope's wife Jill (Gal Gadot), of whose memories of their happy marriage begin to overtake the savage lifer. As time runs down for the CIA, Jerico must decide if his strangely growing allegiance to Jill and her daughter is more important than saving the world.

The problem with Criminal starts early, as we're led to believe that all this ruckus in London wouldn't come under the attention of MI-5; they're nowhere to be seen, and Writers Douglas Cook and David Weisberg don't seem to care. They're more worried about tension-filled moments between Jerico and Quaker, and Jerico's coming-out party of violence, while expecting their audience to accept certain things about their universe that focus on guns and high-speed driving. But Cook and Weisberg make the classic mistake of surrounding their story with as much pseduo-realism as possible, including real-life anchors interviewing our antagonist. The seemingly unending amount of violence keeps audiences from figuring things out until the end of Act II. By that time, we've seen simulated rape, brain matter, and ultra violence, all wrapped around an implausible plot.

Typically a film like this almost dares you to switch off your brain, because it fashions itself rather dim-witted. Not Criminal: it wants you to think about the world's growing espionage machine while forcing you to drink the mayhem of flying cars and generally crass behavior by Coster, who's as naughty as I've ever seen him. But while he keeps the audience laughing with his punching, slamming, and extreme potty mouth, Director Ariel Vromen fashions together one of the poorest-used acting troupes this year. He casts many of them aside with the least amount of care, including early, random deaths and absolutely zero character development. Alice Eve and Amaury Nolasco amount to little than CIA chauffeurs for Jerico, and Reynolds' trapezing through London could have been acted by anyone; they're all just pawns in Vromen's game, cleared off the board so we can get to the violent checkmate. At that point, the script descends further into darkness and unbelievability, spiraling toward an impossible conclusion, especially if you're a female audience member. Gadot goes from being nearly raped by Jerico to finding solace in that same man who just happens to have her husband's memories trapped inside him. And while Jill is eventually exposed to the truth, it doesn't help the audience understand her motivations any better.

Those few bright spots that try to make themselves known are quickly shot in the face and run over by a cavalcade of government vehicles. Gadot is very good, adding to her resume as a woman deeply troubled by her husband's death and looking for answers, while Costner is re-branded as this year's psychotic gem. He plays naughty so well that I'd like to see him in other vehicles, although nowhere near any talk of a sequel. He's unhinged throughout, yet somehow survives acts that would kill just about anyone else, including being shot multiple times and walking away from a t-bone collision. But this is Jerico, and he won't be denied no matter the price be paid: lame. We soon realize that supporting anyone here - even Jill and daughter - would accept us into a world where asinine decisions seem to be the order of the day.

Oldman, usually an excellent anti-hero, here just yells a lot. Sure, the life of the free world is at stake, but at least care about your assets before dumping them. Jones is more like a hapless old doctor than the gritty FBI guy from The Fugitive; he wants to help Jerico, but only because he's a doctor and not because he thinks Jerico has been somehow misguided into this farce. Criminal could have retained the violence of Jerico while providing an interesting character study about the possibilities behind the science. Antje Traue wants to be the seductive femme fatale, but she's not given enough scenes for us to appreciate her cutthroat tactics as Heimbahl's squeeze and lieutenant. Molla as Heimbahl is as one-note bad guy as possible. He's given one scene to explain his reasons for going Rogue Nation on us, but it's not enough for us to appreciate his warped mind. He has no plans post-nuclear winter annihilation, and his passive-aggressive nature soon makes him a caricature, especially as he pleads with The Dutchman to return the launch codes. Clearly, they know each other but Vromen has excised that out of the final print. The Dutchman is making the deal to get his payday without - you guessed it - knowing why he's doing it in the first place.

But at its heart, Criminal just can't be trusted to tell the truth. How could the CIA operate on the foreign soil of a trusted ally, without MI5 so much as asking why? It's almost laughable how our creative team treats foreign relations here, assuming that all we care about is car crashes and missile demonstrations while Quaker and Dr. Franks argue about Jerico's deepening situation. And the promise of Jerico reverting back to his old self is suddenly replaced at film's end with something very different. That happy ending - originally touted as a necessary assassination - is a total sell out of the premise; believe me, I'd rather see the dark, violent ending which is suggested at film's beginning than the family reunion we got, which then leads Quaker to offer Jerico a job. Ok...what?? Regardless if audiences had left with a heavy heart, it would have at least retained the honesty behind its premise. This is the worst kind of attempted franchise-making.

Criminal does its best to squander its many assets, reducing our experience to a series of reckless stunts and a story about a caveman who can finally act like the rest of us. I couldn't help but notice that as Jerico matured into a semi-loving father, the movie around him degraded into a series of silly stunts and increasingly unbelievable plot holes. The real core of the film - the idea of transference and the struggle both subjects undergo could be a really interesting premise, provided that someone someday treats their audience like Ex Machina and not Criminal.

Criminal is rated R for strong violence and language throughout and has a runtime of 112 minutes.

#THENEONDEMON Trailer Starring Keanu Reeves & Elle Fanning

When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.

Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and starring Jena Malone, Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, Elle Fanning, Abbey Lee, Bella Heathcote, Desmond Harrington and Karl Glusman.

THE NEON DEMON will have its world premiere in the Official Competition of the 69th Cannes Film Festival

Amazon Studios will release THE NEON DEMON in theaters June 2016

    WHAT IS ‘THE NEON DEMON’?

“L.A., because of all the lights.”
    – Elle Fanning (Jesse)

“Otherworldly beauty, but [also] the dark underbelly of that.”
    – Jena Malone (Ruby)

“The industry and the city. It’s glossy and shiny but it will eat you alive.”
    – Bella Heathcote (Gigi)

“A demonic force…camouflaged in glitter and stilettos.”
    - Abbey Lee (Sarah)

“That kind of empty, shallow notoriety or celebrity that doesn’t really mean anything in the end and…eats people up and spits them out.”
    - Karl Glusman (Dean)

“There’s something about the light - you can call it artificial light, but I guess all light is artificial besides the sun - and the neon quality of it. [There’s] something about those colors that attracts and repulses at the same time. And then there’s the demon part. What is the demon within; what is the demon on the outside? Is it ego? It may be a fear of death. Or desire. It’s all sorts of fun stuff.”
    - Keanu Reeves (Hank)

“It makes me think of speed and a bunch of lights on Sunset. And the devil.”
    - Desmond Harrington (Jack)

“The dark underbelly of beauty and the things we would do for beauty.”
    - Christina Hendricks (Roberta)

“You have to talk to Nic about the title.”
    - Mary Laws, co-writer

“A great cover for a fetish magazine.”
    - Nicolas Winding Refn, Director, Screenwriter

“Heading for the flashing light and the glamour but also that there’s something twisted and a darker side to it.”
    - Lene Børglum, Producer

    “The word neon is a reflection of the location;
the word demon is a reflection of the obsession.”
    - Rachel Dik, Executive Producer

“It feels a little bit banal to try and explain it because it’s kind of the essence of the movie and whatever I say in English
is going to sound very cheesy.”
    - Natasha Braier, Cinematographer

“When you see neon lights, you think something is super glamorous. And I think that’s probably very misleading in most cases.”
    - Nicole Daniels, Casting Director

“The demon within is highlighted? I don’t know.”
    - Courtney Bright, Casting Director

“It’s going to be a title of one of the musical pieces.”
    - Cliff Martinez, Composer

“It means it’s scary, you know? And I think it’s exciting, you know?”
    - Alex Uceda, Caterer (Alex in the Kitchen)

#THEBFG TO RECEIVE GALA SCREENING AT THE 2016 @cannes

DISNEY’S “THE BFG” TO RECEIVE GALA SCREENING AT THE 2016 CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

Disney’s “The BFG” is to receive a Gala screening at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. The fantasy-adventure film will screen out of competition at the Palais des Festivals as part of this year's festival, which runs May 11-22, ahead of its July 1, 2016 release date.

The talents of three of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg – finally come together to bring “The BFG” to life. Directed by the three-time Academy Award® winner from a screenplay by Melissa Mathison based on the best-selling book by Dahl, “The BFG” tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country and stars three-time Tony Award®, two-time Olivier Award and Oscar® winner Mark Rylance, newcomer Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall and Bill Hader. The film is produced by Spielberg, Frank Marshall and Sam Mercer with Kathleen Kennedy, John Madden, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Michael Siegel, Frank Smith and Naia Cucukov serving as executive producers.

The Disney/Amblin/Reliance production in association with Walden Media will open in U.S. theaters on July 1, 2016, the year that coincides with the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl¹s birth. The Walt Disney Company is distributing the film in the U.S. and select international territories while Mister Smith Entertainment will oversee distribution in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Amblin’s partner, Reliance, will distribute the film in India.

First published in 1982, “The BFG” was Roald Dahl’s own favorite of his stories. Today, the book is published in 41 foreign languages, including Vietnamese, Korean, Ukrainian, Indonesian, Albanian, Estonian, Hebrew and Welsh. “The BFG” is the latest Dahl title to be adapted for stage and screen, following major films, including “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (1971), “James and the Giant Peach” (1996), “Matilda” (1996), “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (2005) and “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009).

Spielberg’s affiliation with the Cannes Film Festival dates back to 1974 when “Sugarland Express” was screened and won the festival’s best screenplay award. Since then the director has had numerous films screen at the festival, including “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial,” which was the closing night film in 1982. In 2013, Spielberg served as the festival’s jury president.

The 69th Annual Cannes Film Festival will take place May 11-22, 2016.

The Adderall Diaries Opens Tomorrow Starring @JamesFrancoTV

Based on the bestselling memoir by Stephen Elliott, The Adderall Diaries is the gripping and complex story of how an author’s fascination with a high-profile murder case leads him to come to terms with his troubled past while embarking on a potentially life-changing romance in the present.

James Franco plays Stephen Elliot, a once-successful novelist paralyzed by writer's block and an escalating Adderall dependency, who becomes obsessed with a high-profile murder case as a way to escape his personal troubles. His interest leads him to meet Lana Edmond (Amber Heard), a smart, sexy reporter who gives him unique access to the case. As their relationship takes off, Stephen is suddenly thrust back into the past when his father (Ed Harris), a cruel and vindictive man, shows up to challenge the veracity of the memoir Stephen is writing. As Stephen simultaneously delves into the details of the murder case (which turns out to have some unexpected parallels to his own troubled upbringing) and reunites with his estranged father, he is forced to separate truth from lies and fact from fiction--ultimately leading him to finally reconcile his past and confront his future.

Pamela Romanowksy’s debut feature deftly mixes tones and storylines to create a fascinatingly rich and engaging viewing experience. Through the character of Stephen, a flawed but always compelling protagonist, the film explores a wide array of themes and ideas, including the legacy of parents, the power of memory, and the nature of truth. The Adderall Diaries is a consistently surprising and thought-provoking film to watch, and it will leave you a great deal to reflect on once it’s over.

    New Poster For FEAR, INC.

What if there was a company you could call that, for a premium, will bring your greatest fears to life? You don’t have to leave your house, your office, or your vacation; the scares are customized to your tastes and arrive at your doorstep when you least expect it. But like texting an ex at 2am, what sounds like a great idea at the time, can end up getting you killed.

When horror movie enthusiast, Joe Foster (Lucas Neff) and his girlfriend, Lindsey Gains (Caitlin Stasey), are handed a business card for such a company, Joe’s curiosity gets the best of him.

As the Fear, Inc experience seemingly begins, scares start popping up right out of Joe’s favorite horror movies, quickly turning him into a kid in a candy store; if the kid was a self righteous thirty year old and the candy store was the prop room from SAW. After a friend explains the company’s dangerous reputation, his rollercoaster of a journey goes from light hearted fun to uncomfortably realistic as things take a major turn for the worse. Joe’s sense of reality spirals out of control as he’s forced to take responsibility for his actions, no matter the cost.

Movie Review: #THEJUNGLEBOOK Beautiful... Will Leave You Breathless

He's Back. RAMA delivers another great review.

Beautiful... Will leave you breathless and in awe

Disney’s live action THE JUNGLE BOOK is the most beautiful film you’ll see this year. It’s absolutely stunning in every sense of the word. It leaves you breathless and in awe. This has been a great year so far, because just like what “Deadpool” has done to superhero genre and “Hardcore Henry” has done to action, THE JUNGLE BOOK is also a total game-changer in terms of family adventure film, it goes to show you that the future of cinema has arrived and it’s looking bright. This is such a masterfully crafted film so much so that you can’t wait to get your hands on the Blu-Ray so that you can watch the bonus features that would hopefully answer that million dollar question, ‘How did they do that?’

Mowgli (Neel Sethi) is a man-cub raised by a family of wolves but as he grows older, the jungle has become unsafe for him when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba) promises to devour him. Guided by his mentor Bagheera (Ben Kingsley) and Baloo the bear (Bill Murray) Mowgli struggles between his desire to stay in the jungle and the possibility of joining the world he’s not familiar with, the humans.

I think we can all agree that the big winner of this Jungle Book movie is the visual effects. The photorealism will blow your mind, you won’t stop talking about it with your friends long after you’ve watched the film, because it looks as if Neel Sethi’s Mowgli may actually be acting alongside what appears to be an actual bear, you can’t tell the difference anymore. And the entire time, the way the movie was shot, makes you even feel like you’re in the jungle with Mowgli. Technology has come a long way and impressive doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Whether you’ve read Rudyard Kipling’s stories or perhaps you grew up a fan of Disney’s 1967 animated classic, I’m not going to spend time making comparisons in this review, all I can say in regards to that is this new version doesn’t take away from nor does it negatively affect your love of the original materials, sure the animated movie was more upbeat and cheery, and some of you may be bothered that Kaa The Snake doesn’t get more screen time in this film but screenwriter Justin Marks and director Jon Favreau carefully assign each character with their respective function that would serve the big picture.

THE JUNGLE BOOK is also Disney’s perfect earth day celebration movie of the year. It’s not preachy, it’s not shoving environmental sermons down your throat, but in its own way, it instills that respect for nature in our hearts. The emphasis on the laws of the jungle, how everybody and everything has its place, and the metaphor of red flower that represents the colossal damage and catastrophe caused by forest fire. The themes resonate, they move you, they’re deeply affecting and they speak to audiences of all ages.

What a fantastic group of voice actors, Jon Favreau could not have surrounded himself with a more perfect group of talents, especially Idris Elba’s voice as Shere Khan, there’s true power and authority in Elba’s voice, when he speaks, the whole room stops whatever it is they’re doing and listens. There’s wisdom in Ben Kingsley’s voice, Scarlett Johansson is sultry as Kaa, and who else better to play a carefree character like Baloo than the legendary lovable funnyman Bill Murray, and newcomer Neel Sethi who plays Mowgli, is a revelation. There’s not a single false note in this film, the attention to details is remarkable, this is an incredible way to revive a classic story and make it even more timeless than it already is.
