Escape Plan Review. We Really Tried To Hate Escape Plan. Here's Why We Changed Our Minds.

Escape Plan Review
By: MattInRC

The brawling and cheesy Escape Plan is pure escapist fun with a twist.

Considering the overwhelming status Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone commanded in the 1980's, it's amazing that no one had the foresight to pair these two up in a film prior to 2010's The Expendables. Though extremely limited, their one-scene-stage-sharing gave us tantalizing hints to what a full-on experience could be. Sadly, a lot's happened since 1982 when Conan The Destroyer and First Blood were released, with both actors seeing their popularity and bankability wane in the face of better actors in better vehicles. This week's release of Escape Plan finally brings us our wish, with an enjoyable and brawling effort that never tries to be more than what it is.

Prison star Ray Breslin (Stallone) has literally written the book on escapes. As the film opens, we see him break out of yet another one in Colorado, but not before performing some CGI-assisted intel and riding a firetruck out of the facility. His job - to identify key faults in today's penitentiaries - has brought fortune and respectability to his team, which includes the nervous finance man (Vincent D’Onofrio), the computer hacker (50-cent), and his oft-squeeze Abigail (Amy Ryan). Soon, Breslin is paid to break out of a new type of prison: privately-funded and free from International human rights codes. Unfortunately, he soon becomes a real-life prisoner, courtesy of a deep betrayal and now under the scrutiny of Warden Hobbes (Jim Caviezel), who's read Breslin's book and practices his craft with cool and deliberate precision. No prison is inescapable, but Breslin will need help from the burly fellow inmate Emil Rottmayer (Schwarzenegger) if he's going to escape for real. Rottmayer and Breslin form a fast association, while Hobbes violently pressures the two in an effort to break them. Faced with few options, the two must survive the daily beatings while enlisting unlikely allies if their escape plan intends on working.

Director Mikael Hafstrom has never made deeply personal films before, so why start here? And while not a stellar director, he does round out the cast with several good actors, including D’Onofrio as Breslin's and Caviezel, whose icy performance is thoroughly entertaining. Hobbes' obsessive personality and absolutely cut-throat approach to breaking Breslin makes him a stand out among the dearth of villains we've been been forced to endure this year. How the Person of Interest star isn't in more films is beyond me, as he was our personal choice to play the caped crusader in the new Superman-Batman film. The same could be said for enigmatic D'Onofrio, and it's hoped that these two find their way into quality film roles before Stallone and Schwarzenegger call again.

But make no mistake: the action breaks no new ground, no goon seems able to shoot our heroes, and the sight of Schwarzenegger going Commando-style with a helicopter gun is done with all the slo-mo style of our post-Matrix era. If one removes any expectations short of theater etiquette and yummy-tasting popcorn, Escape Plan will be escapist fun that reminds us the 1980's action hero and all the random lapses in logic that made those films so appealing. This one has slightly more going for it with the twisty plot courtesy of Writers Miles Chapman and Arnell Jesko, who also throw in some terrific one liners. Honestly, I haven't seen Schwarzenegger this alive in years, as he finally gets to sport his native German; Stallone is his usual mumbling self, but when paired up, these two actually have great on-screen presence. Sure, the casting of 50-cent is a joke and Neill as a sympathetic doctor doesn't get enough screen time, but D’Onofrio and Caveizel more than make up for that with wonderfully slimy performances.

The fun and likable Escape Plan doesn't pretend to be anything more than cheesy, brawling, and somewhat unsophisticated. And it works. Schwarzenegger and Stallone make a great team, even if their antics border on sexagenarian ridiculousness. Caviezel is a solid and enjoyable bad guy who should be in more films, and the story contains enough interesting twists hatched at the right times to wipe away any dust that's accumulated on our elder statesmen. And while mass audiences probably won't flock to see it, Escape Plan's big guns/big laughs M.O. is the best we've seen all year from these two. It's the most we could ask from a film that we tried desperately to hate. Escape Plan is rated R for violence and language throughout and has a runtime of 115 minutes.

The Fifth Estate Review. Looks Nice But Lacks The Soul Of A Biopic Trying To Make A Point

 The Fifth Estate Review
By: MattInRC

The Julian Assange biopic The Fifth Estate can't decide if it's a political thriller or an advertisement for WikiLeaks.

THE FIFTH ESTATE BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH Interview-

Whether your opinion of Julian Assange is positive or not, one cannot deny the effect of his WikiLeaks site. What was the hallowed ground for investigative reporting by dinosaur newspapers has become a wide open arena for bloggers with a story to tell. Yet, there's a shortsightedness to making a film based on someone who hasn't yet died - are they destined to achieve more, or will their success lead to a disastrous fall? The problems with the biopic The Fifth Estate lie on this and other arguments, particularly those surrounding what kind of film it wants to be. Unfortunately, it never quite gets to where it could, settling for something flashy and scattershot instead of something substantive.

Army-of-one Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a rebel by trade. Sporting long white hair with a checkered family history, he's a nervous hacker who's tired of the lies of big business and unfeeling governments. His WikiLeaks site is his digital catharsis, taking down corrupt leaders and bank bosses while garnering front page news around the world. But Assange is also a walking ego, obsessed with his growing self-importance and unwillingness to measure the effect which these releases will have on those whose names are contained within. But the site behind the man belies a simple truth: he really is his own army, with more adoring fans than actual soldiers. Enter Daniel Schmitt (Daniel Brül), who becomes Assange's right hand man; he's the Quality Control guy, verifying the authenticity of documents before they're released. Soon, the two have garnered the attention of the US government, including Defense Secretary Sarah Shaw (Laura Linney), who's worried that Assange's gameplay will ultimately compromise her assets in the field. She's soon proven correct, when a stack of sensitive communiques are released, complete with the names of several US operatives. Realizing that Assange has gone too far by refusing to redact the names, Schmitt must decide whether he will respond to his firing by Assange as a chance to do what he thinks is right.

Cumberbatch has easily become one of the most engaging actors of the time, effortlessly able to wrap himself up into his characters, whether it be Sherlock Holmes, Van Gogh, or even the physicist Stephen Hawking. His lispy portrayal of Assange is right on the money, as is his penchant for never really talking to the camera. Brül has already starred in this year's very good Rush, and it's nice to see that his portrayal of Niki Lauder wasn't just a fluke. Schmitt is caught between the spirit of accountability and transparency and the morality of placing good people's names out in the open, and Brül handles it as well as anyone could. Whether Estate on the whole works or not is debatable, because it simply cannot decide what it wants to be. Is it a political thriller about the dangers of those who bravely serve in the field? Is it a story about rugged self-individualism on the Wild Wild Web? Or is it an advertisement for WikiLeaks itself? Had Director Bill Condon just focused on one of these aspects, we could have had a truly resonant and timely piece. Instead, we get a fairly flashy but bumbling tale by Writer Josh Singer that fails to utilize all of its assets. Stanley Tucci and Anthony Mackie are relegated to nonsensical roles as US officials who realize too late what Assange is planning, while Schmitt's girlfriend (Alicia Vikander) tries unsuccessful to occupy that is quickly lost during an inconsequential sex scene. I did like Linney's story, as Shaw rushes to measure the full impact of the WikiLeaks release while protecting a compromised asset. Her interplay reminded me of Chris Terrio's tightly-wound Argo; but her role is limited to damage control, and that's clearly not the best part of her story.

Well-acted by its leads and with its finger on the pulse of current events, The Fifth Estate tries desperately to be valuable in a time of the 24-hour news cycle. In the end, it's a victim of its own creation, content to portray a figure whose whole story hasn't been told quite yet, but whose flash decries the general lack of a soul. Unfortunately, the tale is not effective enough for us to care, even if the site he has created has done just the opposite. I wish I had emerged from the theater feeling better about its message, but as we approach the Oscar season, this one is doomed to a quick death with little to no consideration. The Fifth Estate is rated a surprising R for violence and language and has a runtime of 128 minutes.

GIVEAWAY: CARRIE PRIZE PACK

CARRIE is out in theaters this Friday

Thanks to Screen Gems & Sony Pictures we are going to give away ROE passes, novelization of the film and limited T-shirt for the upcoming film CARRIE.

This is for Sacramento Residence ONLY

CARRIE is an upcoming 2013 American supernatural horror film. It is the third film adaptation of Stephen King's 1974 novel of the same name. The film stars Chloë Grace Moretz as the titular Carrie White, and Julianne Moore as Carrie's mother, Margaret White.

Director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry) says she's, reasonably enough, gone back to the original Stephen King novel for inspiration. But the story has also been modernised. "You have to do that," says Pearce, "in order to bring any great piece of work written in one era [in this case the 1970s] into the next."

MACHETE KILLS Review. Strikes Again

MACHETE KILLS Review
By: Rama

Rama is back with another great review. Make sure to follow him on Twitter and LIKE is page of Facebook.

MACHETE strikes again with MACHETE KILLS! Director Robert Rodriguez truly knows how to entertain those of us who just want to come to theaters to see a no brainer R-rated over the top outrageous actioner and that is what MACHETE KILLS is, a movie that’s as crazy fun as its predecessor. Danny Trejo is back as the title character, chopping villains’ heads left and right, uncompromising, no mercy and legendary. Robert Rodriguez has established himself as the king of Mexploitation and we don’t mind, in fact, we wouldn’t mind more of what Rodriguez can offer the world. This weekend, you can either spend your money on some boring movie, or let MACHETE rock your world!

“Machete Kills” is an action-packed thrill ride about the adventures of legendary secret agent Machete Cortez (Danny Trejo). In his latest mission, Machete is recruited by the U.S. President (Carlos Estevez) to stop a crazed global terrorist (Mel Gibson) from starting a nuclear war. With a bounty on his head, Machete faces death at every turn from an all-star cast of deadly assassins. Breaking all the rules, visionary director Robert Rodriguez leads this star-studded ensemble on one of the wildest adventures to save the world ever captured on film!

In this sequel, Danny Trejo a.k.a Machete finds himself reluctantly working for U.S. president Rathcock, played by Charlie Sheen/Carlos Estevez who I think if he ever becomes an actual U.S. President, would get this country in total jeopardy, but enough about Estevez who’s always ‘winning’! The whole show is Danny Trejo, the man who’s a walking badass and he doesn’t even have to do much to prove it. Trejo was born for this role, hell he doesn’t even have to act, he is Machete, just like Paul Hogan is Crocodile Dundee, you can’t picture anybody else but Trejo as Machete. But this sequel has made him evolve from a man with nothing to lose into some kind of mexican James Bond who doesn’t tweet.

Just like any sequel, things would have to go bigger in scoot and in this case, it means throwing a bunch of famous stars, familiar names in, so this time around, you have Oscar winners like Cuba Gooding Jr. and Mel Gibson and Oscar nominees like Demian Bichir. Machete’s mission has been made not easy by those guys’ presence. All the while I was watching this movie, I couldn’t help but think that Machete probably just wants to go home to his cold beer and simple life, so why does he care at all if America gets blown up? MACHETE doesn’t care, or does he?!

But he keeps encountering all those colorful murderous characters, he’s probably thinkin’ “O, no, not another one of sh*theads again!” Although I gotta admit, seeing Mel Gibson playing your typical Bond-esque villain who wants to blow up the world is nothing short of comical and hilarious. Cuba on the other hand is part of this one big chameleon bounty hunter character who shape shifts, he changes his forms, and one of those forms is Lady Gaga, one of today’s big pop stars making her feature acting debut and what a mark she makes indeed, and it’s got nothing to do with whether or not you like her music.

I had a blast watching MACHETE KILLS but if there’s one complaint I have is that the transition from Demian Bichir’s villainous character and his story to Mel Gibson’s villainous character and his story is a bit slow and poorly structured, though again, I understand what Rodriguez was gunning for, to show us whether or not Machete can be vulnerable, forced to make a decision that he doesn’t like, and be regretful and compassionate, in other words, soft.

It took Mel Gibson’s character to bring Machete to his usual state, it took a man of absolute evil to jumpstart Machete who eats absolute evil men for breakfast.

With Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen, o excuse me, Carlos Estevez in the mix, you wonder if Robert Rodriguez has some unspoken fascination with Hollywood bad boys, but with Sofia Vergara, Michelle Rodriguez, Amber Heard, Lady Gaga, and the now adult and sexy Alexa Vega in the mix, you wonder if Rodriguez has turned into some kind of hispanic version of Michael Bay who as we know just loves featuring hot women wearing optional clothing for no reason at all. But folks, let’s not forget that MACHETE KILLS is not a movie to be analyzed too seriously and if you’re figuring out all kinds of things along the way while watching this particular movie or even after it’s done, then you’re thinking way too hard, amigo.

MACHETE KILLS, just like its predecessor, relies heavily on its campy far-fetched humor, mindless low budget special effects, explosive action sequences, and the ladies, especially Sofia Vergara, even have double D firepower, how do you wrap your head around that?! You don’t! You just take it all in, this Rodriguez-hijacked ride the moon, you just let it do its thing. Let MACHETE kills, that’s what he does. He’ll even do it in space if he has to.

May the gods of cinema have mercy on me, I’m a huge fan of MACHETE franchise, huge fan of MACHETE KILLS and hell yeah I’m down for another one, if Trejo and Rodriguez are up for it.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - 'Atlas' TV Spot

For Hunger Games fans, there is not long to wait now until the second film, Catching Fire, arrives on screens. The tickets are already selling out and US chain Wal-Mart is looking to boost the excitement further by releasing a TV spot for the movie.

Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has returned home safe after winning the gladiatorial-style 74th Annual Hunger Games, along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow (Donald Sutherland) prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

With Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Sam Claflin, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Jena Malone, Willow Shields and Philip Seymour Hoffman among the cast, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is out on November 21.
