Michael Jackson #1 Top-Earning Dead Celebrities

The Dead Shall Rise When They Hear Dollar Signs

Michael Jackson never graced Forbes’ annual Celebrity 100 list during his life. In death, the King of Pop earned more in the past year than any star on that list, apart from Oprah Winfrey.

Jackson not only took the No.1 spot on our 10th annual ranking of the Top-Earning Dead Celebrities, with gross earnings of $275 million, he out-earned the other 12 deceased stars on the list combined. Still more impressive: His estate's 12-month haul was greater than the pooled earnings of this year’s two biggest living acts, U2 and AC/DC. Jackson’s posthumous earnings come from his stake in the lucrative Sony/ATV catalog, the hit Sony ( SNE - news - people ) film This Is It and renewed fan interest in music, videos and all things Michael Jackson.

“The death of Michael Jackson really put a focus on--crassly, quite frankly--what someone’s worth when they’re deceased,” says David Reeder, vice president of Corbis' GreenLight, which manages the personality rights for Albert Einstein and Steve McQueen, among other dead celebrities. “In a more positive way, it exposed consumers to this idea that there actually is a market for, and an enduring legacy for, these people.”

To place on this year’s list, a deceased celebrity needed to earn at least $5 million between Oct. 1, 2009, and Oct. 1, 2010. For the most part, earnings come from things like music royalties (John Lennon), book sales (Dr. Seuss) or the licensing of one’s image and likeness (McQueen). To compile the list, we spoke to agents, lawyers and other sources to estimate a star’s gross earnings (before taxes, management fees and other costs).

Bottom line Micheal was a different time, era,and I think elvis related to public much better because of Micheal's reclusive style , but again this intrigued people more so, Elvis is more my generati....

Coming in at No. 2 is Elvis Presley. The King of Rock n’ Roll's estate pulled down $60 million in the 12-month period, thanks to Graceland admissions and a heavily hyped Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas. The estate's portfolio of more than 200 licensing and merchandise deals got a nice boost from the late star's 75th birthday celebration as well.

Stieg Larsson, author of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, debuts on this year’s list at No. 6 with $18 million in earnings. The Swedish writer died in 2004 at the age of 50, before any of the books in his Millennium Trilogy were published. They have since sold 40 million copies, been translated into 44 languages and spawned three hit Swedish movies.

No surprise, Hollywood has come calling. A U.S. version of the first book, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, is scheduled to hit theaters next December. The film will be directed by The Social Network’s David Fincher and star Daniel Craig as hero Mikael Blomkvist. A cut of the money from the American movies (and a reported fourth book) will go to Larsson’s estate, which is being fought over by Larsson’s longtime girlfriend and his brother and father.

Also new to the list is New York Yankees icon George Steinbrenner, who ranks ninth with earnings of $8 million. The legendary owner passed away this summer at the age of 80, but his estate continues to cash in on the team’s success. The Yankees have a lucrative stake in the YES regional sports network, and Steinbrenner's estate receives a cut of sales from the team's merchandise.

Many dead celebrities make the bulk of their posthumous fortunes on licensing deals. Unlike their living counterparts, who can suddenly fall into a heap of trouble (see Lindsay Lohan, Mel Gibson), dead celebrities have images--be they glamorous, rebellious or tough--that are unlikely to change. For that instant and considerably safer brand association, marketers are increasingly attaching themselves to the dead, says Mark Roesler, chief executive of CMG Worldwide.

Take Steve McQueen, who returns to the list at No. 11 with $6 million. The Bullitt star continues to personify cool three decades after his passing, and advertisers have taken notice. His image has been licensed to high-end brands like Dolce & Gabbana and Persol sunglasses. More recently, his likeness was used for Tommy Hilfiger’s fall “icon collection” and UBS' ( UBS - news - people ) global “We Will Not Rest” campaign.

James Bond 23 Due In 2012

James Bond 23 Due In Theaters In 2012

MGM has big plans for 007 now that the studio is back on its feet. In a report stemming from yesterday's news that MGM had filed for bankruptcy, rejecting Lionsgate's bid for a takeover, Bloomberg confirms that MGM is fully commited to shooting James Bond 23 in the next two years, and that it will be ready for release in November of 2012.

The studio will retain fifty percent of the rights to the Bond franchise, with MGM
set to release a new 007 adventure every other year starting with James Bond 23's release in 2012. An equal partner will pay all of the production costs on the first few movies released, and then the later Bond sequels will be wholly owned and funded by MGM itself.

There is no word on whether or not Daniel Craig will reprise his role as 007 in James Bond 23. At this time, the actor is committed to filming all three installments of the Millennium Trilogy, starting with the currently in production The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

As indicated by the earlier report, MGM is currently set to spend as much as $125 million in the next fifteen weeks on operation costs alone. They have already ponied up $20 million for The Hobbit in a co-production deal with Time Warner Inc. and New Line Cinema. At this time, MGM is obligated to pay close to $275 million on the The Hobbit and The Hobbit Sequel, but is looking for a third party to fund those obligations.

James Bond 23 is in development and stars Daniel Craig, Judi Dench. The film is directed by Sam Mendes.

Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch Trailer #2

Sucker Punch Trailer Number 2

We finally get our hands on a second trailer for the upcoming film from Zack Snyder (300 & Watchmen), Sucker Punch. From what I see in the trailer I am alittle confused to what the film will stand for. "Just Let go"

Sucker Punch” is an epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary.

She has been locked away against her will, but Babydoll (Emily Browning) has not lost her will to survive. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls—the outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), the street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), the fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) and the reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish)—to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm).

Led by Babydoll, the girls engage in fantastical warfare against everything from samurais to serpents, with a virtual arsenal at their disposal. Together, they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive. But with the help of a Wise Man (Scott Glenn), their unbelievable journey—if they succeed—will set them free.

Born from the creative vision of filmmaker Zack Snyder (“Watchmen,” “300”), “Sucker Punch” features an ensemble cast of young stars, including Emily Browning (“The Uninvited”), Abbie Cornish (“Bright Star”), Jena Malone (“Into the Wild”), Vanessa Hudgens (the “High School Musical” films) and Jamie Chung (“Sorority Row”). The film’s main cast also includes Oscar Isaac (“Robin Hood”) and Carla Gugino (“Watchmen”), with Jon Hamm (“The Town,” TV’s “Mad Men”) and Scott Glenn (“The Bourne Ultimatum”).

Zack Snyder directed “Sucker Punch” from a screenplay he wrote with Steve Shibuya, based on Snyder’s story. Snyder and Deborah Snyder produced, with Thomas Tull, Wesley Coller, Jon Jashni, Chris deFaria, Jim Rowe and William Fay serving as executive producers.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Academy Award®-winning production designer Rick Carter (“Avatar”) and “Watchmen” and “300” veterans director of photography Larry Fong, editor William Hoy and costume designer Michael Wilkinson. The music is by Tyler Bates and Marius DeVries.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Legendary Pictures, a Cruel and Unusual Production of a Zack Snyder film, “Sucker Punch.” Opening nationwide March 25, 2011, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Tron: Legacy The Costumes & Merchandise

Tron: Legacy The Costumes & High End Merchandise

This article will appear in the first issue of the re-launched Hollywood Reporter, which appears on newsstands Wednesday. Subscribers can read the full version here.

In 1982, Tron not only became one of the first movies to make extensive use of computer graphics, but the high-concept film also put those special effects front and center on the film’s costumes. The Dec. 17 release of Tron: Legacy — starring Olivia Wilde, Garrett Hedlund and the return on Jeff Bridges as computer genius Kevin Flynn, who has mysteriously disappeared through a portal into another world — is hoping to accomplish the same thing.

But being slavish to the original wasn’t something costume designer Michael Wilkinson and co-costume designer Christine Bieselin Clark (who also worked together on 300 and Watchmen) thought made sense when starting this project more than two years ago.

“Tron was this cutting-edge film, and we wanted to be reverent to what the fans loved about it, but the spirit is what we wanted to capture,” Clark says. “Many fans thought the suits for this film should have been white, but the world’s darkness is the basis of the suit color, and the exuding white light is the goodness inside.”

See the pictures after the Jump..

During the filming of director Joe Kosinski's Tron: Legacy, the movie's stars, which include Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, often had to wear the iconic glowing uniforms through 20-hour shoots, which is why comfortability was a major design concern during the two months it took designers to craft the spectacular body armor.

"We looked at high-tech sporting equipment, soldier concept work from the military and haute couture," says costume designer Michael Wilkinson about the inspiration he and co-costume designer Christine Bieselin Clark used to create the character's state-of-the-art helmets and body armor.

"Many fans thought the suits for this film should have been white, but the (Tron: Legacy) world's darkness is the basis of the suit color, and the exuding white light is the goodness inside," explains costume designer Christine Bieselin Clark.

Disney Consumer Products has teamed with popular brands -- from Adidas and Oakley to high-end designers Hayden-Harnett and Rousseau -- to produce over 150 Tron: Legacy-inspired items that range from stylish kicks and designer pumps to snowboards and motorcycle jackets.

One of the most exclusive pieces in the Tron: Legacy collection is the Tron Icon Necklace by Rotenier, which retails for $2,600.

Popular NYC-based accessories designers Hayden-Harnett joined the Tron: Legacy design revolution with its contribution of the exclusive Clu Hobo Bag.

Inspired by the film's stylish female crusader Quorra, the limited edition, five-inch platform shoes from Jerome C. Rousseau retails for $795.

Sportswear companies Burton, Hurley, Adidas and Oakley are among the many designers that joined the Tron team to produce exclusive items that include backpacks, sunglasses and snowboard boots.

"The light is another character in this movie," says costume designer Christine Bieselin Clark. "It's the person's soul. The white light is pure and good, while the orange is considered devilish or evil."

Oscar winner Jeff Bridges, who starred in 1982's Tron, returns in the role of Kevin Flynn.

Prior to Tron: Legacy's Dec. 17 premiere, Disney will debut a Tron pop-up shop in Los Angeles for a six-week run at Culver City's Royal-T Cafe beginning Nov. 18. The hot spot will also serve up "Lightcycle salads" and "Identity Disk cakes."

Sally Field In Talks To Play Aunt May In Spider-Man Reboot

Sally Field In Talks To Play Aunt May

THR is reporting that Sally Field is in talks to star as Aunt May in the upcoming Marc Webb's Spider-Man reboot. The actress is in early talks to play Peter Parker’s beloved aunt in the new Spider-Man movie.

The news comes on the heels of Martin Sheen in final negotiations to play Uncle Ben in the relaunch of the movie franchise.

Aunt May is a key supporting character in Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s life, as she is the only family the young hero has.

In the early comics, she was portrayed as a frail lady who worried over her nephew, trying to set him up with the neighbor’s daughter, and frequently got sick, adding to Peter's personal woes.

In addition to Sheen, the new movie, which begins shooting in December, has Andrew Garfield as Peter, Emma Stone as love interest Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as the movie’s unnamed villain.

Field’s last major studio role was in 2003’s Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, although she did star in the 2006 indie drama Two Weeks. She is more recently known for her work on ABC’s Brothers & Sisters.

Will Ferrell, Denzel Washington Hollywood's Overpayed Actors For 2010

Ferrell, Washington And Murphy On The List

For the second straight year, Will Ferrell is the most overpaid actor in the world, and not far behind are a slew of other male comedic actors.

According to Forbes magazine, Ferrell's movies earned only $3.35 for each $1 the star was paid. Shia LaBeouf, on the other hand, is paid $1 for every $81 his movies earned, so he's the actor determined by Forbes to give the most boxoffice bang for his salary buck.

In making its determination, Forbes looked at the three most recent movies of each actor on its Celebrity 100 list. It added up boxoffice, DVD and television revenue for the three films, factored in production budgets and came up with an operating income for each of them that it then compared to each star's compensation.

In Ferrell's case, Land of the Lost, Step Brothers and Semi-Pro were used, while The Other Guys, which performed better than the other three, was released after the June 1 cutoff date for this year's Forbes list.

The second-most overpaid actor is Eddie Murphy, who was paid $1 for every $4.45 his movies earned. Unfortunately for Murphy, animated movies don't count. So instead of a couple of hit Shrek movies, Forbes looked at Imagine That, Meet Dave and Norbit.

Other funnymen on the Top 10 list of overpaid actors are Seth Rogen, Vince Vaughn, Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey.

If one considers Drew Barrymore a comic actor -- and her past three films were, in fact, comedies -- then seven of the Top 10 overpaid actors are paid specifically to make audiences laugh.

Dramatic and action types cracking the Top 10 were Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise and Matt Damon.

Sheen will join a cast that includes Andrew Garfield as Parker, Emma Stone as love interest Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as the movie’s unnamed villain.

The movie, under the direction of Marc Webb, is heading for a December start.

Thundercats Animated Series Update

Thundercats Animated Series Update

Back in June, one of the biggest stories to hit the site didn't involve a movie starring Ryan Reynolds, Robert Downey Jr., or any characters from the Marvel or DC universes. It was a story about the Thundercats, believe it or not, and their upcoming return to television in a new animated series.

When we first brought you the news about the new "Thundercats" animated series debuting on Cartoon Network in 2011, details were scarce. All we we had was a promotional image of Lion-O and the promise of a "21st century reimagining" of the classic '80s cartoon.

That's why I made sure to pick the brain of "Thundercats" producer Michael Jelenic when he dropped by Splash Page HQ during New York Comic Con last month.

"It's funny because I've been working on a lot of Batman cartoons the last couple years, and I tell people I have a new Batman cartoon coming out and they're like, 'Cool...'" laughed Jelenic. "But when I say 'Thundercats,' they're like, 'Thundercats?!?! Oh My God!'"

"I'm a little surprised by the visceral reaction to the property," he told MTV News. "It might be because it's the last great '80s property that hasn't been reinvented for this new generation. We're trying to be respectful to the old material, but bring it into a new era. I think it will be really cool."

No stranger to animated fare, Jelenic penned the upcoming "Superman/Shazam: The Return Of Black Adam" animated short for the "DC Showcase" collection, as well as various episodes of "The Batman" and "Legion Of Super Heroes" cartoons. Jelenic is also a producer on the celebrated "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" animated series, which we named "Best Animated Series of 2009."

"We have some great artists [on 'Thundercats']," said Jelenic. "We're using a very famous Japanese animation studio, Studio4C, which did 'The Animatrix.' They're going to have their signature stuff on it. It's going to be pretty epic."

But what about the whole "reimagining" thing? Jelenic agreed that the word "reimagining" could mean a lot of things, so he explained one specific change he's looking to make with the new series.

"One thing is that I tried to simplify the mythology a little bit," he said. "It's a pretty complicated backstory that borrows from a lot of other sci-fi stuff, like Superman and Star Wars. In developing this, I wanted it to be a little more simple. In the other version, there's something like three different planets involved, and they all converge onto one planet, and nobody's really connected. I just wanted to bring that all together."

"It's reimagined in that way, but at the same time, we're going to see the characters that we love," he promised.

Asked specifically about the presence of classic characters Panthro, Cheetara, and Tygra, Jelenic said "all those characters will still be in it" —even Snarf, apparently.

"Everyone always wants to know about Snarf," he laughed. "He will be in it, and he will not talk. Don't worry."

"He won't be going, 'Lion-O, why don't you do this?'" said Jelenic, imitating the character's familiar whine. "We just having him say, 'Snarf! Snarf!' That's a way to get him in the show without annoying every single person who hates him. It's funny, because people are always like, 'I hate Snarf! Wait. you're not going to put him in? That's terrible!'"

Jelenic also offered up a little more context for the visual redesign of the Thundercats, which we got a glimpse at in the promo image released earlier this year.

"I think when people see the final character designs, people will think it's a different take, but it will feel very familiar to the old series," he said of their visual plans. "The colors aren't quite as bright as they were. I's a little darker take, but you'll recognize everybody."

"Thundercats" is currently scheduled for a 2011 premiere.

Under the Skin Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson To Play A Sexy Alien

Scarlett Johansson as the perfect woman? A perfect alien woman?

That is what FilmNation is selling at AFM, launching Under the Skin, a sci-fi drama from Sexy Beast writer-director Jonathan Glazer.

“Johansson plays an alien on earth, disguised as the perfect aesthetic form of a mesmerizing woman. She scours remote highways and desolate scenery looking to use her greatest weapon to snare human prey -- her voracious sexuality.”

But, wait, there’s more. “She is deadly efficient, but over time becomes drawn to and changed by the complexity of life on earth. With this new found humanity and weakening alien resolve, she finds herself on a collision course with her own kind. Taking her point of view throughout, the film presents a unique look at our world through alien eyes.”

Glazer co-wrote the script with Walter Campbell and is eying a production late spring 2011.

In a statement, FilmNation CEO Glen Basner said, “We’re so very excited to be working on this arrestingly original movie. How could we pass up the chance to work with a visionary director like Jonathan, especially when combined with the intriguing notion of Scarlett Johansson as a ruthless alien seductress?”

Jon Favreau Calls 2011 Box Office A Blood Bath

Jon Favreau Calls 2011 Box Office A Blood Bath

Jon Favreau has seen Hollywood’s future — at least as far as summer 2011 – and it looks a lot like “Saving Private Ryan.” “It’s Omaha Beach, it’s going to be a bloodbath,” the filmmaker said of next year’s crush of big special-effects films, remakes and sequels. “There’s never been a summer like this next summer. It’s going to be bloody [for filmmakers and the studios]. As we were sticking thumb tacks in a calendar we realized that this is going to be looked back upon as Omaha Beach.”

Favreau, the director of the “Iron Man“ films, is well known to moviegoers as an on-screen funny guy in movies like “Couples Retreat” or the sublime “Swingers“ (which he also wrote), but he wasn’t joking a bit when he said Hollywood is going to be in “a pit fight” next summer because of a glut of high-profile releases that will translate to some big-name disappointments just because of the numbers game. Favreau has a sci-fi horse in the race, of course, with July’s ”Cowboys and Aliens,” which stars Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell and Harrison Ford in a mash-up of an Old West tale with a space-invader story.

Favreau’s track record and the cast make “Cowboys and Aliens” a movie to pay attention to, but Favreau knows he is going up against some titans of the popcorn sector. “Do you know the list? It’s pretty staggering,” Favreau said. It is a deep roster: There’s the huge finale of the ”Harry Potter” franchise, Johnny Depp’s return to his signature role with a new “Pirates of the Caribbean” installment from Disney and a third “Transformers” film, which is Michael Bay’s follow-up to the 2009 mecha-movie that pulled in more than $836 million worldwide.

Then there’s the masked-man crowd, with four major superhero films: ”Green Lantern” starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by “Casino Royale’s” Martin Campbell ; “Thor” and ”Captain America: The First Avenger,” two promising projects from the ever-expanding Marvel Studios universe; and director Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class,” which will take the prequel route to Fox’s mutant-hero epic. Also arriving are proven animation powerhouses, such as Pixar’s “Cars 2” and the DreamWorks sequel to ”Kung Fu Panda,” as well as a new “Winnie the Pooh” feature film that goes old-school bear with hand-drawn animation. “The Smurfs 3D” will seek out the youngest moviegoers, as will Robert Rodriguez’s return to kid fare, “Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World.”

There are also some wild cards. “Rise of the Apes,” starring James Franco, aspires to take the “Planet of the Apes” property in a bold new direction, while “Super 8” is an alien-menace tale that follows “Cloverfield” in cinematic spirit and, with J.J. Abrams’ name in the credits, can’t be dismissed. On the comedy front, there’s “Zookeeper” with Kevin James, which might just as well be called “Paul Blart: Zoo Cop,” and ”The Hangover 2,” which might end up being a bender to remember.

Favreau said it’s great for moviegoers, but it looks like a steel-cage match for filmmakers and studio executives. “There’s not a weekend where there won’t be teeth on the floor. The audience wins but it’s going to be rough for people making these movies. Then there was the big rush to 3D, so you have all of these people fighting for a limited number of screens and to get the 3D done, since most of these are hybrids or conversions, so this is a technology that is still in the relatively early stages and there’s going to be a lot of blood pressures going up in the months ahead.”

Why don’t studios spread the wealth? The simple reason is that the summer months mean big box-office; young people are out of school and willing to make repeat visits to their favorite new silver-screen adventure. More than that, Favreau said, there is a deep anxiety in Hollywood that home-video retail is headed for a cliff.

“Even if there is a DVD market now, there won’t be in a few years,” Favreau said, predicting that all those expensive boxed sets of Blu-rays and DVDs will be pushed aside for digital delivery of movies, a far lower price point and rampant piracy. That’s what has happened in the music industry, where the scale of economics changed dramatically once the shiny silver disc gave way to the mouse-click.

“People will download on a subscription basis, and the industry model that allowed me to make independent films [such as 'Swingers' and 'Made'] and approach the limited theatrical release as a way to market the home-video products, that’s going away as home-video dries up rapidly. Everything soon will be about what you take in at the box office.” That explains why filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Michael Mann are turning to outlets like HBO as the natural place for adult drama. And the movie theaters — especially next summer — will be loud and crowded with something a bit more explosive and expensive. “In the hour-and-a-half and two-hour theater experience, what people are looking for is something big and brash, an event that you can communally share … that’s what people want and everybody in Hollywood is chasing that right now. And I mean everybody.”

Ghost Rider 2 Budget Slashed

Why Even Make The Movie?

With a production deadline looming, Sony has partnered with Hyde Park Entertainment as a cofinancier on the 3D “Ghost Rider 2,” with Nicolas Cage in the lead - at a much leaner budget.

The first film in 2007 set up Cage as stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze, who gives up his soul to be come a vigilante. That film had an estimated budget of $110 million, and grossed $115 million domestically, and a total of $229 million worldwide.

This time Ashok Armitraj’s Hyde Park Entertainment has stepped in to cofinance the project because Sony has so much capital tied up in 'SpiderMan' and 'Men in Black 3' and 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.'

The budget has been cut from $135 million to a leaner $75 million, according to a knowledgeable insider.

(Even Nic Cage had to take a serious haircut to reprise Johnny Blaze, down from his $12 million fee to what one knowledgeable insider said was $7 million. )

Sony had no initial comment.

The production will begin almost immediately, Idris Elba and Ciaran Hinds and Placido Violante are also cast in the film, written David Goyer and directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor.

The film is being produced by Mike deLuca, Avi Arad and Ashok Armitraj.

Hyde Park owns international rights, while Sony will keep domestic distribution rights.

Michael Jackson's Thriller Movie

Michael Jackson's Thriller To Become A Film

Michael Jackson, who reportedly earned $275 million posthumously over the past year for his estate, isn't slowing down anytime soon.  GK Films is in active negotiations to acquire a package for a film that is being fashioned around his groundbreaking hit song Thriller. The film, which has been quietly shopped over the past several weeks by Real Effects Entertainment, has Kenny Ortega attached to direct, and The Hangover scribe Jeremy Garelick to write the screenplay.

While GK is in the driver's seat, I'm told that Fox 2000, Mandate/Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment are all in the mix on what will shape up as a pricey rights deal, but which will turn out to be a film budgeted at under $50 million. Plot is being kept under wraps but I understand it has to do with the song's folklore, involving Vincent Price and the town he grew up in. All of this deal making is subject to a deal being completed with Jackson's estate, but that has been in the works for some time and is expected to be sealed. Thriller songwriter Rod Temperton is also in the mix. On top of the Thriller deal, I've heard that Cirque du Soleil is in talks to do two live shows based on Jackson's music, and that Montecito partners Ivan Reitman and Tom Pollock are looking to do a feature about Jackson's younger years.

There is symmetry to GK in that the deal is being spearheaded by GK Films president Peter Schlessel. While at Sony Pictures Entertainment, Schlessel made the deal for This Is It!, the feature film that Ortega directed which used rehearsal footage from what was expected to be Jackson's farewell tour. That film was profitable for SPE, and it is likely that GK Films will distribute Thriller through its SPE output deal.
