Movie Studios Pulling Back From Comic-Con

In summers past, Warner Brothers used Comic-Con International , the premiere convention for comic book, science fiction and fantasy fans, as a marketing platform for movies like “ Sherlock Holmes,” “300” and “Sucker Punch.” Enlarge This Image Walt Disney Studios staged “ Tron: Legacy ” stunts there three years in a row. Last July, DreamWorks Animation paraded Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and other members of the “ Megamind ” cast through the convention. This year? Warner’s main studio operation is bringing nothing. Ditto Disney and DreamWorks. The Weinstein Company, a perennial presence, will also sit this one out. Even Marvel Entertainment, whose panel for “ The Avengers ” was a highlight of Comic-Con 2010, is on the fence about whether it will mount a major presentation. Comic-Con, as a growing number of movie marketers are realizing, has turned into a treacherous place. Studios come seeking buzz, but the Comic-Con effect can be more negative than positive. The swarm of dedicated f

DC Comics To Play A Bigger Role At Warner Brothers.

DC Comics To Play A Bigger Role At Warner Brothers. Advice to Warner Bros. film execs: If you're in a meeting with CEO Barry Meyer discussing DC Comics superheroes, you might want to think twice before saying things like, "But Batman wouldn't say that." Meyer relayed the story of such a meeting while talking about how DC was going to play a much bigger role at the film studio going forward. There will be an organizational announcement next week, then in about a month Warner Bros. will unveil a spread sheet detailing how the various superheroes will be reintroduced to consumers, and on more than just feature film platforms. Meyer said Warner Bros. has been looking after DC in a "custodial way," but it's now time to get "much more entrepreneurial." The superheroes of DC, though, may not be enough to make up for the loss of "Harry Potter" after the final installment of that movie franchise is released July 15. When a Wall Stree

Drew Barrymore Set To Revisit Oz

Drew Barrymore Set To Revisit Oz Surrender Dorothy , yet another Wizard of Oz sequel, has been resurrected. The project was first announced in 2002. It was based on a Zach Helm script (Stranger Than Fiction) and had Drew Barrymore attached to star. She is now attached to direct, as a follow-up to her directorial debut, Whip It. The original project seemingly stalled back in the early aughts. In fact, I can’t even find a mention of it since October 2002, but with the proliferation of Oz projects in development, there’s no time like now to resurrect an old idea. The project is still set up at Warner Brothers and Flower Films (Barrymore’s production company), though I have no word on whether she’s still planning to star as the great, great granddaughter of Dorothy who has to learn how to use the power of those ruby red slippers to keep the Wicked Witch of the West from taking control of the kingdoms of Earth and Oz. (That story doesn’t sound too dissimilar to Josh Olson’s version, whic

Clash of the Titans To Be In 3D

Clash of the Titans To Be In 3D Warner Bros. will decide in the next 10 days whether to release Louis Leterrier’s remake of action fantasy “Clash of the Titans” in 3D. Warners has ordered a 3D test of the film — set for release on March 26 -- and will screen the converted scenes next week before deciding whether to make the move. Studios across Hollywood are looking into possible 3D conversions in the aftermath of the big boxoffice bonanza called “Avatar.” With conversions, 2D films -- whether newly produced movies or classic titles slotted for release, such as the first two “Toy Story” pics -- are run through a process that turns 2D images into 3D. Most 3D movies, including “Avatar,” are shot in 3D from the start. Co-produced by Legendary Pictures, “Titans” is a re-imagining of a 1981 film that starred Laurence Olivier in the character of Zeus. The role is played by Liam Neeson in the remake, appearing opposing Sam Worthington’s Perseus in the mythology-based actioner. Releasing “Tit

"Jonah Hex" Is Riding Back Into The Sun For Re-Shoots

"Jonah Hex" Is Riding Back Into The Sun For Re-Shoots Warner Bros. and Legendary are assembling Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, Megan Fox and Michael Fassbender for a roughly 10-day shoot in the Los Angeles area for the movie, beginning at month's end. Although no test screenings have taken place, the studio has decided to work on story and action during the shoots, working in 12 pages of additional script mixed in with some reshoots. Jimmy Hayward, who co-directed "Horton Hears a Who!" and is making his live-action debut with the movie, remains in the director's chair. He will be joined by "I Am Legend" helmer Francis Lawrence, who was brought in last month to act as a consultant. ("Crank" filmmakers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, who wrote the "Hex" script, were initially on board to direct the movie back in its early stages but were dismissed because of creative differences with Brolin. Brolin told MTV News at the time he th

'Clash of the Titans' Film Complete. Only In A Fairy Tale

'Clash of the Titans' Film Complete. Only In A Fairy Tale "Clash of the Titans" is getting more epic -- and perhaps 3-D. I talked to Sam Worthington backstage last night at The Envelope's special screening of "Avatar" and the subject turned to "Clash of the Titans," the fantasy adventure due in March from director Louis Leterrier, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. The 33-year-old actor said that Warners, pleased with what they saw of Leterrier's work, had increased the budget for the film. "We're going to be going back and shooting more scenes for it, they cut loose with some money so we can add to it," Worthington told me as we sat in the green room. He was obviously very enthused about the studio's decision. Sigourney Weaver, Worthington's costar in "Avatar" and a friend of Leterrier's, was sitting next to us and listening in as well. Worthington went on: "We're going to be shooting more scen

Pictures is prepping a few new weeks of shooting for their comic book adaptation of Jonah Hex, which is slated for release on June 18, 2010. While Jimmy Hayward directed the movie, we're being told that Francis Lawrence - the man behind I Am Legend and Constantine - is getting behind the camera for the reshoots. Having survived death, Jonah’s violent history is steeped in myth and legend,

Terminator Franchise Up For Sale?

Terminator Franchise Up For Sale? Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek, who acquired the science-fiction franchise in 2007 for $25 million and produced this year's sequel " Terminator Salvation ," are looking to sell the rights as several companies owned by the two producers work their way through Chapter 11 reorganization. Since "The Terminator" was released in 1984, the franchise rights have changed hands frequently. When the first movie came out, production company Hemdale Films owned a 50% interest and director James Cameron sold the other half to producer Gale Anne Hurd for $1. Carolco Pictures, owned by producers Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna, bought Hemdale's stake in 1990 for $10 million and released "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" the next year. In 1997, after Carolco filed for bankruptcy, they started a new venture, C2 Pictures, which bought their old company's stake at auction for $8 million and the remaining 50% from Hurd for $7 millio
