Dwayne Johnson & Gina Carano On Set For Fast Six

Dwayne Johnson just might be the person who is most excited about the release of "Fast Six."

His inclusion in last year's "Fast Five" helped revitalize the franchise, and he's been gushing about his excitement for the sequel seemingly since it was announced. Now filming has begun on the movie, and he's been tweeting up a storm to tease fans about the sixth installment of the "Fast and the Furious" franchise.

"'Beast & the Beauty'.. Me & my FAST 6 partner in ass kickins (and fun) @ginacarano #BadAssChick," Johnson tweeted along with the above picture.

Even though Johnson is one of the buffest dudes in Hollywood, it seems like he's not going to let his workout regimen suffer just because he's on set. If anything, he seems more committed to keeping himself looking great for the upcoming action movie.

"3:35am. London. AM cardio starts now.. then breakfast, then hit the weights, then on to set of FAST 6. Let's roll.. #OwnIt" he tweeted last night.

And just because he really wants to keep us up-to-date on the growth of his biceps, Johnson tweeted three hours later, "Great AM cardio in beautiful London - handled & done. Workout #2 starts now before heading to set of FAST 6.. #HitTheIron."

Since you're being so fast and loose with that camera, Mr. Johnson, why don't you send us a few more set pictures while you're at it? We're sure director Justin Lin wouldn't be too put out about the added buzz for "Fast Six."

Jennifer Garner Up For Alias Reboot

Long before J.J. Abrams was the darling of Hollywood, he was the mind behind one of the most wildly awesome (and occasionally off-the-rails) series with ABC's Alias. Turns out original star Jennifer Garner (Daredevil, Elektra) is actually up for getting the band back together—she just has one little requirement.

So, what would it take to bring the coolest spy-fi series back to life? Not surprisingly, she'll only do it if Abrams is the man pulling the strings again. He captured lightning in a bottle for a few seasons of the original series, and Garner told Fretts On Film she'd only risk it if she knew it had his stamp of approval:

"I don't see him turning around and rebooting 'Alias' anytime soon. If he did it and he was involved, I'm sure the rest of us would sign right up. We had a blast making that show and we're all still super close, so I'm sure you would find an eager group of participants right there."
Garner's star was on the rise when the series ended, but she hasn't done much lately (she's currently co-starring in the new Disney family film The Odd Life of Timothy Green), so it makes sense that she'd be open to a potential return to glory.

Storywise, the show got a little crazy by the end, but when Abrams could balance the fantastic with the spy stuff, it worked—and could work again.

Imax Poster For Raiders Of The Lost Ark

To coincide with the arrival of all four Indiana Jones films on Blu-ray on September 18, we are being spoiled with an IMAX rerelease for just one week in the very same month.

Explaining just how you convert a 31 year-old movie to something capable of being called IMAX quality, Steven Spielberg told The New York Times, that "the first tier is where you take the DI [digital intermediate] and you enhance the resolution to IMAX resolution. The second tier is that the sound is significantly different.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark Heading To Imax-

"They take the [audio] stems that we gave them, and they put them through their 12,000 watts of digital surround sound, and it’s a totally uncompressed experience."

Sound, as it turns out, is key to Spielberg's IMAX vision:

"You kind of feel the sound in your chest, like when the boulder is rolling, chasing Indy through the cave. You really feel the boulder in your stomach, the way you do when a marching band passes by and you’re standing right next to it."

Accompanying the release is a new poster by Mark Raats below. Keen-eyed readers will of course note that it's called Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark rather than its original title, Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

PARANORMAN Review. Was It Worth The Wait?

Let's find out what RAMA thought of the film.

From the makers of Coraline, that oughtta tell you that LAIKA is not really in the business of making adorable children’s movies, which makes one wonder why PARANORMAN was not released during Halloween season.

This film works for the most part, the humor is funny, and when it comes to stop motion animation, the talented folks at Laika know what they’re doing. Though I’m not an expert, I’ve always had utmost respect for this medium of bringing a story and characters to life, one frame at a time, it takes patience, considering that it really did take about 2 years to make this film. The filmmakers behind this story have always imagined PARANORMAN as Scooby-Doo meets The Goonies, I say they’ve succeeded. But for all its charms and whimsy, and themes of not letting your fear change who you are, PARANORMAN doesn’t stay consistent. It’s about a boy who sees ghost but halfway through the end, his ghost-seeing ability doesn’t seem to really matter…

The new 3D stop-motion comedy thriller from animation company LAIKA, reteaming the company with Focus Features after the groundbreaking Academy Award-nominated “Coraline.” “ParaNorman” is, following “Coraline,” the company’s second stop-motion animated feature to be made in 3D. In “ParaNorman,” a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst, of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.

Again, I’m not an animation expert, but the fact that PARANORMAN is both stop motion and in 3D should give some grounds for admiration. Just to think of the labor that goes into such production.
The film does look visually stunning, kids can relate to the characters and the story in terms of their ordeal with bullying and fitting in. The film in its essence is about characters misunderstood.

Without spoiling much, the film plays an interesting twists by showing us who truly are the victims, there’s also an element of appeasing old angry spirit.

Is PARANORMAN too scary for kids? I personally think so, but we’re currently in a year where films that call themselves family films seem to border horror and the supernatural (Brave, Frankenweenie) so I suppose viewing discretion is advised when watching PARANORMAN.

I think they cast the right voice actors for the roles, and the humor fires on all cylinders, there’s one scene involving a vending machine that got me laughing so hard, I couldn’t breathe.

Norman teams up with a jock, the jock’s little brother who happens to be Norman’s only friend, the bully, and Norman’s self-centered sister, so as far as the Scooby-Doo gang aspect is concerned, PARANORMAN hits it spot on. To see these very different characters somehow working together, serves for an enjoyable thrill ride.

Again, if only the ghosts that Norman sees at the beginning parts of the film, could also have significant roles in helping Norman on his mission, sadly that’s not the case.

Above all, PARANORMAN will certainly be a treat for those of you animation die-hards out there who’ve always been fascinated with the technicalities behind it. I’m sure the blu-ray special features would be worth to watch.

BALLSY Review For The Expendables 2

The Expendables 2 Review

So did RAMA think this movie was BALLSY Enough?

Track ‘em, find ‘em, kill ‘em! Shoot somethin’!

THE EXPENDABLES is insanely awesome! Nothing like an old skool action and this is one of the best sequels for us old skool action fans everywhere. At times, it’s a hot mess but one that I wouldn’t mind watching again and again, because this is definitely NOT for those who complain that it’s just impossible that the good guys barely make it without a single scratch. This is NOT for those who complain how one man can beat an army, this is NOT for those who complain that the plot is too thin or the characters are predictable or the dialogue is cheesy. THE EXPENDABLES 2 is for those of us who want to see some R-rated badassery, that’s exactly what the film offers and that’s exactly what you’ll get. Arnold, Bruce, Van Damme, Norris, and Sly: 5 of the most iconic action stars of all time, battling it out, can’t get any better than that. Rock ‘em sock ‘em, high octane, firepowered, non stop action from start to end, THE EXPENDABLES 2 is satisfying!..

The Expendables are back and this time it’s personal…
Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), Toll Road (Randy Couture) and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) — with newest members Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) aboard — are reunited when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job. The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time — six pounds of weapons-grade plutonium; enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that’s nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother.
That is done the Expendables way….

I remember when the first movie came out in 2010, many thought it was just a terrible form of self indulgence, an expose of big men with big guns or big knives and that there was nothing smart about how the action scenes were staged, and I said to those people that they were right, the same goes for this sequel, but they’re thinking too hard. When you watch movies like THE EXPENDABLES, you need to put on the same cap you wore back when you watched Commando, Die Hard, or Bloodsport, or Rambo II, where sometimes you get one good guy beating a bunch of guys and you see heads flying or arms chopped off.. and sometimes you’d see the good guy in a straight up duel to the death with one main villain. And that fight is usually fueled by either pride or revenge. So that’s the formula that both The Expendables and The Expendables 2 go with. Whatever backstory or relationship plot points the script has, it only touches them on the surface, they’re not necessarily the driving force.

The team has some new additional members. Fans of Jet Li would be significantly disappointed with Li’s absence but his slot is filled by an Asian girl named Maggie, played by Nan Yu, who can take care of herself. And the team also got itself a sniper nicknamed Billy The Kid, played by Thor’s brother, Liam Hemsworth. Billy is somewhat of a reminder of the choices that each member of this team could’ve had when they were young but they chose this life instead.

The villain is played by Jean Claude Van Damme, who was invited to the first movie but thought too much of himself at the time and finally agreed to show up in the sequel and I’m glad he did. For those of us who practically grew up on watching his movies like Hard Target and Timecop, it really is good to see him back on the big screen, after years of watching him on straight to DVD Universal Soldiers sequels. Van Damme is your typical villain, cocky, merciless, his right hand man (Scott Adkins) is just as trigger happy and murderous as he is.

To see Van Damme do his signature fight move, jump, flip and kick to the face, almost brings tears of happiness to my eyes.

THE EXPENDABLES 2 goes above and beyond and sometimes to the point of excessive, to deliver some of the characters’ iconic lines like “Yippie Kai Yay” and “I’ll be back”. You geek out when Arnold and Bruce say them in this movie but when they say them more than once right after they say them the first time around, it kinda loses its charm.

But a shot of Arnold, Bruce, and Sly just blasting their guns away and Norris on the balcony helping them out, really feeds our appetite, it’s as if the movie is saying ‘hey, you’ve always wanted to see these guys working together, kicking ass, right?! Well here you go! Bon appetit!’
Thank the gods of cinema that this sequel is kept R-rated, because if it had been PG-13, if they had left the violence to our imagination, I would’ve gone straight to the box office, halfway through the movie, and asked for my money back.

In a way, watching THE EXPENDABLES movies has turned us into Roman spectators shouting in excitement at the sight of gladiators fighting to the death in the arena, if you don’t believe me, watch the movie for yourself and see how much fun it gets.
