Movie Review: #AMonsterCalls

The well-intentioned A Monster Calls is a horribly-flawed Oscar wanna-be.

Review by Matt Cummings

For those of us who have witnessed the premature death of a parent, the story behind A Monster Calls should be a cathartic experience. Instead, its dark themes feel way too much for young people to handle and its "seen that before" experience will fall on older deaf ears.

A Monster Calls tells the story of 12 year-old Conor (a thoroughly entertaining Lewis MacDougall) who is befriended by an ancient living tree (voiced by Liam Neeson). The only reason why this incredible event is happening is that Connor is witnessing the slow death of his mother (a merely adequate Felicity Jones), while his separated father (a completely misused Tony Kebbell) visits from far-away LA. Conor is tormented by a terrible dream of losing his mother, which sets the tree off to teach the boy a lesson about letting go. Through a series of three beautifully-rendered watercolor-styled stories, Conor learns the value of loss and the tough truth that some things are simply beyond his control. Conor and his icy grandmother (a horribly-cast Sigourney Weaver) must learn to live with the knowledge that mum's illness won't end well, while the boy is forced to deal with the nightmare that proves far worse than merely foretelling his mother's fate.

Director J.A. Bayona gifts A Monster Calls with stunning CGI beauty. He outfits the tree with spindly branches that leap out like Groot's in Guardians of the Galaxy, and its dark eyes perfectly match the tone of Actor Liam Neeson's voice. He's a meaner version of Groot and much more like the Ents from Lord of the Rings franchise. But Bayona seems to serve at least three different story masters with his film, each of whom demands their story be told with equal attention. The result is that the tales of son & mother, the magical ent, and Conor's personal relationships with his grandmother and father never grow beyond their most basic premises. The tree's true role in Conor's family isn't well-revealed, the father-son story is poorly executed, and the (most powerful) mom/son plot is cast aside in favor of rich (but hollow) CGI.

A Monster Calls is also an amazingly confusing and unrealistic film, not in how it displays Conor's fantasy world, but for the rules in which this universe exists. Bayona paints too broad a brush stroke in explaining key elements of the film, such as an important series of reveals near film's end involving photographs and a hospital visit. I'm being vague here in case you desire to see this, but trust me when I say that you'll have to make some big jumps to get all of what Bayona is trying to sell. Monster's script by Patrick Ness (who also wrote the book) can't keep our attention once the first two stories are told by The Monster, who comes off at once as a savage brute and then as a pushy psychologist determined to tell Conor how to process his mum's imminent death. People process death in a myriad of ways, but not even The Monster's analogous stories would make sense to most 12-year-olds. To most, the death of their mother would make any of them inconsolable, even if a magical tree appeared out of nowhere. A Monster Calls asks us to accept huge truths while giving us none of the payoff for accepting such a bargain.

So much of A Monster Calls feels manufactured, from the designer sets where everything is in its place to the actors who remain in tightly-controlled environments instead of being given the chance to branch out (no pun) their character's emotions. Ness' rather wooden script (pun intended) never humanizes into anything beyond the messily-stated message that it's OK for Conor to grieve, but by the time we get to the tear-jerker ending we're just ready for the story to end. Moreover, those reveals keep coming right up to the end, but the one question that's never answered is why The Monster gets involved in the first place. Yet another hastily-conceived reveal attempts to clear that up, but the Ent has been alive for thousands of years and yet this is the moment it arises. Sure, the tree's true relationship with Conor is supposed to be the magic element that ties everything together, but it's hard to accept what happens for several reasons.

Among them is the lack of real danger against the boy, as there's some sort of nebulous punishment if Conor doesn't share his nightmares with The Monster after he shares three analogous stories with him. And while they are all designed to help him process his deeply-buried grief, these are Conor's least important worries throughout A Monster Calls. He's routinely beset by a nearly homoerotic bully, craves the closeness of his distant father but hates his grandmother enough to rage on her sitting room, and (oh by the way) must deal with his mother's impending death. The way that (finally) arrives is teary enough, but it could have been so much more had it settled on fewer stories.

A Monster Calls could have been an immediate Oscar candidate, had Bayona stuck to two of the three stories (sans father). Its potentially powerful themes of love and family should have formed its backbone, where what we get is a story that serves too many masters and fails to make even a massive living tree feel more menacing (or wise) than it looks.

A Monster Calls is rated PG-13 for thematic content and some scary images and has a runtime of 108 minutes.

TV Review: Sherlock "The Six Thatchers"

The show is back and the game is on.

Review by Brandon Wolfe

With the exception of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm (currently winding down a six-year dry spell), no series on television resurfaces as infrequently as the BBC’s Sherlock. Due to the bustling Hollywood careers of leads Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, the stars need to perfectly align for another season of the detective drama to come to fruition, resulting in a three-year gulf between seasons (broken up only by last year’s trifling one-off "The Abominable Bride"). For a series whose seasons only run a scant three episodes (albeit each 90 minutes long), this leads to an irregularity comparable less to other television series than to Halley’s Comet. Sherlock is the star that burns twice as bright and an eighth as long. Get it while you can because it won’t be around for long, and its return is far off on the horizon, if it arrives at all.

“The Six Thatchers,” the fourth season premiere (and only the eleventh episode generated since 2010), is aware of the show’s uniquely limited time on the stage and wastes no time dawdling around. Quickly we deal with the baggage left over from where we left off, with Sherlock (Cumberbatch) quickly exonerated for the murder of Charles Augustus Magnusson in the eyes of the British government thanks to the manipulations of his coldly influential brother Mycroft (series creator Mark Gatiss). Immediately Sherlock is back at work, solving cases via text with the speed that most of us would expend typing “OK” to confirm dinner plans. However, his true focus is on the still-mysterious posthumous plans of his archenemy Moriarty (Andrew Scott). Sherlock’s partner, John Watson (Freeman), has fallen into a state of domesticity as his wife, former assassin Mary (Amanda Abbington), has just given birth to their daughter, Rosamund. He’s content, yet bristles a bit at the strictures of family life.

With Moriarty’s scheme not yet presenting itself, Sherlock finds a viable distraction with a brain-teaser of a case involving a body found incinerated in a car crash that had apparently already been dead for a week prior. While this matter piques Sherlock’s interest, he actually solves it quite quickly and without much fanfare, but finds a greater distraction in the client’s recently stolen bust of Margaret Thatcher, a wholly unrelated crime. For reasons that are unclear even to Sherlock himself, he sees a bigger picture encompassing this bust, one possibly Moriarty-flavored. He discovers that only six of these busts were produced and that thefts of each are systematically transpiring. He manages to get the drop on the culprit while one such theft is in progress and discovers that Moriarty isn’t the nucleus of this case, but that Mary is. The thief is a member of her former team of assassins and he wants her dead, blaming his capture and torture after their final, botched assignment on her.

It’s with the Mary revelation that “The Six Thatchers” careens away from being a standard Sherlock romp and becomes something darker and more impactful. Mary decides that she is a danger to John and Rosamund, so she decides to vanish into the wind to protect them, randomly deciding upon destinations so as to circumvent even Sherlock’s keen detection, though she isn’t successful, finding Sherlock already present upon her arrival in Morocco. Sherlock promises both Mary and John that he can keep them safe, and though he quickly sniffs out the true architect behind Mary’s troubles, he finds himself unable to intervene when Mary throws herself in front of a bullet intended for him. John is forced to say a crushing goodbye to his wife and makes it known to Sherlock that he holds him accountable for her death.

Mary’s death isn’t terribly shocking, since there is a literary precedent for her being removed from the picture. More to the point, there has been the sense, ever since she was introduced at the start of Season 3 (which, in Sherlock’s singular timetable, was only four episodes ago), that Mary was an outlier, a hiccup in the status quo. The beating heart of the show (especially among some hardcore online factions) has always been the partnership of Sherlock and John, and Mary has always felt like something of an intrusion on that. This isn’t to take away from Abbington’s performance and her terrific chemistry with Cumberbatch (and indeed, Mary’s relationship with Sherlock was always far more engaging than hers with John), but Sherlock works best as something of a two-hander. As devastating as her death is (and Freeman really sells the grief), there comes with it the sense that it wasn’t just inevitable, but narratively necessary.

Of course, it’s not possible for things to snap right back into place as they once were. For one thing, there remains the issue of how the series plans on incorporating the Rosamund character into the proceedings. Can John still function as an assistant crime solver when he is the only surviving parent to an infant? It certainly won’t look good in a number of ways if he constantly dumps the kid off on Molly (Louise Brealey) or Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) each week (or, you know, for the remaining two weeks). There is also the key issue of just how long the series intends to keep Sherlock and John estranged. Again, most shows have 8-24 episodes per season to allow things to transpire. Sherlock does not have this luxury. Everything has to move at an accelerated pace on this show, which means if the two are going to patch things up, it sort of needs to happen immediately.

As bifurcated as “The Six Thatchers” is, lurching sharply from fun-Sherlock to grim-Sherlock, the episode is mostly a delight. Cumberbatch will never be anything less than a churlish joy when highlighting Sherlock’s inhuman deductive abilities or his inhuman people skills (the biggest kick of the episode is Sherlock’s tossed-off rant against becoming Rosamund’s godfather by dismissing God as “a ludicrous fiction”). The episode also gets points from the shading it adds to John and Mary’s marriage, when John allows his wandering eye to result in a secret affair. Because this is Sherlock, one is trained to wait for John’s fellow bus passenger-turned-paramour to rear her head as an assassin or Moriarty acolyte, but she’s just a cute woman on a bus with no ulterior motives. Showing us this development without it having greater narrative significance provides a compelling bit of character-based nuance. As the great detective himself might note, it’s the unexpected bits of intrigue that keep things interesting.

The Man In The High Castle Will Return For A Third Season

Amazon today announced it has greenlit a third season of the original dramatic series The Man in the High Castle. Additionally, Eric Overmyer (Treme, Bosch, The Affair) will serve as showrunner and executive producer for this new season. Seasons one and two of the Emmy Award-winning drama series are now available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in the US, UK, Germany and Austria via the Amazon Prime Video app for TVs, connected devices including Fire TV, mobile devices and online at http://amazon.com/originals. Following in the footsteps of its first season, Season Two of The Man in the High Castle premiered with the most viewers over its debut weekend of all scripted Amazon Original Series.

The Man in the High Castle stars Alexa Davalos (Mob City), Rupert Evans (American Pastoral), Luke Kleintank (Pretty Little Liars), DJ Qualls (Z Nation), Joel De La Fuente (Hemlock Grove), Brennan Brown (Focus), Bella Heathcote (The Neon Demon), and Callum Keith Rennie (Longmire), with Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Revenge) and Rufus Sewell (Victoria). The series was developed by Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files), with Ridley Scott (The Martian), David W. Zucker (The Good Wife), Richard Heus (Ugly Betty), Isa Dick Hackett (The Adjustment Bureau), and Daniel Percival (Banished) serving as executive producers for Season Three.

“As timely as ever, the exploration of characters at a dark point for humanity has provided incredible stories for two seasons,” said Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy and Drama, Amazon Studios. “Eric and his team are doing an incredible job crafting stories about the inner lives of those who struggle to do good in a world that is not. We couldn’t be more excited to bring season three to customers in 2017.”

Season two has an average customer rating of 4.6 stars. Here is what customers have been saying:

“Set in a dystopian future where the Allies lose the war, it is a brilliant piece with an interesting plot line and interesting characters to match.”
“…A terrific television drama in all of the ways I was expecting — it’s an intelligently written and competently directed adaptation of what seems like a truly great science fiction classic.”
“The screenplay is mesmerizing, and the sets beyond perfection, giving you an idea of what America would have been.”
“The Man in the High Castle is phenomenal television in every sense.”
“This show has one of the best possible premises in the history of television.”
Based on Philip K. Dick’s Hugo Award-winning 1962 alternate history novel, season two of the one-hour drama series The Man in the High Castle continues to explore what would have happened if the Allied Powers had lost World War II. While Germany controls much of the East Coast and Japan controls the West Coast, the Rocky Mountains have become a “neutral zone”—and ground zero for a resistance, led by a mysterious figure known only as “the Man in the High Castle.” While some citizens struggle against the fear, oppression and inequality, others accept their lives, as compromised and unfulfilling as they might be. But after a series of enigmatic films surface depicting a world vastly different from their own, some begin to question the very nature of their reality.

Eric Overmyer has writing and producing credits that include St. Elsewhere, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order, The Wire, New Amsterdam and Treme, which he created with David Simon, and adapting Amazon Original Series Bosch for television. He has four Writers Guild nominations, three Emmy nominations, two Edgar nominations and a Humanitas nomination. With his colleagues, he has shared a Writers Guild award and an Edgar award for The Wire, and a Peabody award and a PEN teleplay award for Treme.

The first two seasons of The Man in the High Castle are now available for Prime members to stream and enjoy using the Amazon Prime Video app for TVs, connected devices including Amazon Fire TV, and mobile devices, or online at Amazon.com/originals, at no additional cost to their membership. Sylvester Stallone Confirms Expendables 4 Is Happening

With the news of a developing TV series, it looked as if The Expendables' cinema career may have ended at part three. Not so, according to Sylvester Stallone, who over the weekend confirmed December's rumors that Expendables 4 was underway.

Stallone told his Facebook followers that he's about to start working out for "the next Expendables, [which is] gonna be great, fingers crossed! We're gonna do our best and I think we've got some really great attitude going, some great ideas. I think everyone's expecting something different and we're gonna give it to 'em."

The last we officially heard about the film was in October, 2015, when studio Nu Image announced that a fourth instalment had been made possible by Chinese funding. Almost half of Expendables 3's total worldwide box office haul of $200m came from China, with a relatively meagre $40m from the States.

"What seems to work in their favour in China, is that these movies are good old-fashioned shoot ’em up entertainment," said executive producer Steven Paul back then.

Whether that's still the deal remains to be revealed, as does the specific cast and the director. Stallone directed the first Expendables himself, with Simon West coming in for Expendables 2 and Patrick Hughes on Expendables 3. The regular Expendables team in front of the cameras, meanwhile, has been Stallone, Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture and Jet Li – plus Arnold Schwarzenegger and (for the first two) Bruce Willis, Wesley Snipes and Antonio Banderas last time, and some younger whippersnappers including Ronda Rousey.

We can probably safely assume that Stallone will be leading the screenwriting team, however. And if Stallone is getting into Expendables shape as of now, we can probably expect shooting (in both senses) before too long. More updates will undoubtedly follow in the near future.

Soundtrack Review: #StarTrekBeyond Deluxe Edition

Star Trek Beyond - Music from the Motion Picture: The Deluxe Edition does even less with its expanded listing.

Review by Matt Cummings

If you missed the pleasantly surprising Star Trek Beyond, its arrival in November onto home video offers you a chance to make up for your lack of logic. It's one of the only bright spots in an otherwise pretty awful Summer slate. And while we loved the movie (read our review HERE), we were less than happy with its score, which we originally reviewed after its July 29th release. Now, Composer Michael Giachhino has released a Deluxe Edition, more than doubling the original tracklist. Unfortunately, it does nothing to change our minds, suffering from a pedestrian sound that borrows too much from other Trek movies.

Three-plus years into their five-year mission, the crew of the USS Enterprise boldly explores the final frontier, while their Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) secretly harbors personal doubt. His approaching birthday will see him live longer than his father (who died aboard the USS Kelvin in the 2009 reboot), and thus Kirk is entertaining a promotion and desk job at the Yorktown space station. His science officer Spock (Zachary Quinto) is also wondering if his future lies elsewhere in helping to repopulate New Vulcan. But when The Enterprise is viciously destroyed by the powerful new enemy Krall (Idris Elba), the crew is scattered on a distant planet and must band together with the alien Jaylah (Sofia Boutella) to defeat a threat greater than any they've faced before.

Composer Giacchino, best known for his work on Alias and most recently Jurassic World and stepping in to quickly record Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, gives us 47 total tracks, up from 18 in the original pressing. But what plagued that album - listless transitions and and an over-use of previous themes - is merely amplified here. It's not that Giacchino is the wrong man for this series - as he created the now-well-regarded theme for the 2009 reboot - it's that he's only been good lately at creating music that accompanies rather than leads. This is more apparent as you dig deeper into this 2-disc set, which was released by Varèse Sarabande Records. Giacchino plots a course into dull and uninspiring music, neither separating nor offending. Fans will appreciate the news that it appears Giacchino has included the entire music from the film. If you liked the music, then you'll be even more excited about securing this version.

As I said in my original review, one of the many strengths behind The Original Series was its powerful theme and accompanying music, which to me represents the best television score ever. Here, Giacchino doesn't introduce anything new or particularly interesting, returning to his 2009 theme throughout by over-borrowing from his track Enterprising Young Men. That's ok, so long as other memorable (and new) tracks are being produced alongside it. Instead, we get a lot of noisy elements, made to impact the scene without being able to stand on their own. Loud drums, screeching violins, and a menagerie of noise continue to permeate the experience, which usually tells you a lot about the creative team's thoughts about the role of music in their film. An example here is track 18 Artifacts As in Life, which is merely a series of whole notes that never build to anything except more noise at the end. It's a lot like Mocking Jaylah - which has now been pushed from Track 12 to 7 on Disc 2. These tracks haven't been cleaned up or changed, just added to more meandering set up pieces. These random moments feel haphazardly assembled and never establish a meaningful push to the story.

Disc 2 doesn't get any better. Krall-y Krally Oxen Free and Franklin My Dear are joined by the newer Bright Lights Big Velocity (Part 1 and 2) and Jaylah's Theme. I would have much appreciated the cheap naming conventions Giacchino utilizes had I enjoyed the score itself. Star Trek Beyond doesn't hold a candle to scores like 2016's The Neon Demon because it fails to exist outside of the film itself. You don't tie any track here to any particular scene in the movie, because it just isn't crafted that way. Jerry Goldsmith understood that when he created a completely new theme and music for 1979's The Motion Picture, seamlessly integrating it back into The Original Series theme for future films. A great score will allow you to do this, because its DNA is so strong. That's the measure of whether a score is merely noise (like track 14's Shutdown Happens), or if it has the ability to transcend the film itself.

I felt the same when listening to Giacchino's interpretations for Rogue One and Marvel's Doctor Strange, in the first case merely re-purposing old music and in the latter failing to give The Sorcerer Supreme a powerful and memorable theme. He's certainly capable of opening his imagination to strange, new worlds, but none of that is apparent in the highly pedestrian Star Trek Beyond - Music from the Motion Picture: Deluxe Edition. Its additional tracks do nothing to separate it from the hodge-podge sound which has frankly plagued his scores for awhile now. I know that some hardcore Star Trek fans will feast on this massive offering of the complete score, but that won't be me. Luckily, it doesn't impact my total appreciation for the movie, which ranked in my top 5 of 2016. Skip the soundtrack to purchase the film on Blu-ray - I promise you won't be disappointed with that portion of your experience.

Star Trek Beyond is now available on Blu-ray and digital download. Music From The Motion Picture: The Deluxe Edition is limited to 5,000 LP hard copies.
