Movie Review: #TheBeguiled

The Civil War-era drama The Beguiled reeks with a molasses-like pace and a fixation on empty moments. Review by Matt Cummings The idea of Counter Programming at the domestic box office is not a new thing. Most of the time it works: pair a film made for kids with another just for the adults, and you have a successful evening out. Unfortunately, the disease that has become the 2017 Summer box office has infected so many releases that audiences are likely to stay home. Such is the case with The Beguiled , a movie with tremendous potential that dotes and doddles for 93 minutes before giving us a totally empty ending. Just one year before the end of The Civil War, and Southern plantations aren't the only ones to suffer from a lack of slaves. Even female boarding houses like the one run by Miss Martha (Nicole Kidman) are shoddy remnants of their former selves. Battles seem to happen near them quite often, and soon it deposits the injured Corporal John McBurney (Colin Fa

Blu-ray Review: @BadMoms

Bad Moms is a naughty, nasty, raunchfest that doesn't quite deliver on Blu-ray. Review by Matt Cummings As we headed into the home stretch for the Summer 2016 box office, one thing was abundantly clear: it was the worst in terms of quality releases as far back as I've been writing about it. Luckily, Bad Moms arrived to make that long list of trash a bit more bearable while establishing itself as potentially the sleeper hit of the year. And yet its message is one that I hope doesn't resonate with stressed out moms ready to party it up at the expense of their children. Sadly, the home release doesn't fare as well, displaying good audio, decent video, and a disappointing lack of extras. For stressed-out mom Amy (Mila Kunis), every day is spent rushing to parent meetings, working full-time hours at her part-time job, and trying to get her husband to actually do some parenting along the way. But when her marriage suddenly ends over a long-time affair, Amy i

Movie Review: #Southpaw

The violent and devious world of boxing is revealed in Jake Gyllenhaal's Southpaw . Review by Matt Cummings If you were one of the millions of people who forked over $100 in hopes of watching that 'fight of the century' between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, you were probably disappointed at the men's dance that occurred in its place. It's sad to admit that American professional boxing is perhaps in its darkest hour, ruined by promoters who laugh all the way to their huge payouts, and supported with questionable behavior by boxers that borders on the practiced routines of the WWE. At least this summer gives us the very good Southpaw , although it's a bit long and entirely predictable. Boxer Billy Hope (Gyllenhaal) has fought his way to the top of his profession, taunting his opponents while they deliver vicious blows in a vain attempt to defeat him. His wife Maureen (Rachel McAdams) and daughter Leila (Oona Laurence) are worried that the sh
