Soundtrack Review: The LEGO Batman Movie

The LEGO Batman Movie – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack loves its Batman by upping the dramatic camp and delivering it in a black cowl.

Review by Matt Cummings

The LEGO Batman Movie was a hilarious tribute to the 75-year history of The Dark Knight, offering up heavy meta to every incarnation including the infamous Bat Nipple. While it's not as good as the fantastic The LEGO Movie, there's so much going on here that you need multiple viewings just to get all the jokes and to appreciate Actor Will Arnett's performance. An important component to my elevation of the film as one of the best of early 2017, The LEGO Batman Movie – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is also full of terrific tips-of-the-hat to previous Batman movies, blending heavy orchestrations, guitar rock, electronic drums, and interesting sound effects into a must-buy.

Billionaire Bruce Wayne and his doppelganger Batman (voiced by Will Arnett) revel in the life each has created for himself. For the Caped Crusader, it's once again capturing the notorious Joker (Zach Galifianakis), all while Gotham City celebrates Batman's greatness. For Wayne, life is about parties and acquisitions until he meets the new chief of police Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson), who suggests that Batman's protection of the city is actually causing its destruction. While Wayne plots the acquisition of Gordon, he accidentally adopts Dick Grayson (Michael Cera), whose golly-gee-wiz attitude eventually sees him discovering the Batcave, much to Wayne's dismay. But trouble looms as The Joker gathers a squad of baddies from Arkham in the hopes of ridding Gotham of its hero, while proving to Batman that he actually needs The Joker in order to exist. The results will see Batman face tough realities about what he does and whether it might be time to forge new friendships in order to protect the city he loves.

LEGO Batman is a score/soundtrack with music composed by Lorne Balfe (The Penguins of Madagascar, Terminator Genisys). Its 28 tracks are a mix of orchestral score music and rock tracks, featuring all 12 of the song used in the film, from campy and classy (The Cutting Crew's I Just Died in Your Arms and Harry Nilsson's One) to the poppy/dancy (Forever by DNCE and Invincible by Kirsten Arian). One of my favorites here is lounge genius Richard Cheese's Man in the Mirror, who dresses up current hits with his Vegas vocal styling. It was a hilarious addition in the film, and it seems like Cheese and LEGO should collaborate as often as possible.

Once you're past these and other vocal tracks, it's on to Composer Balfe's wide open score. Mixing in violins, sound effects, and electronic drums, it's like listening to a grown-up version of his Penguins score, which I adored for its comic tip-of-the-hat to James Bond. Things get started with Black with deep horns and a Hans Zimmer choir. Of course, Balfe is deep in comic reflection here, bringing in every element of Director Christopher Nolan's gritty crime trilogy as well as Danny Elfman's dark camp. Things remain dark through most of the tracks, reminding us that transformative scores like these are easily pluggable into most action films. That might be a problem for some who claim that such ease of movement actually lessens its effectiveness but it's clear the score is strong enough to be in most action films.

Not everything here is so melancholy, as tracks like The Arrival of Robin are quite pretty, a little quirky, and help provide sonic breaks from all the bashing and brawling. But then it's soon back to the big set pieces Balfe is really great at creating. This score would have been just fine had it been made by anyone, but Balfe is great at mocking the subgenre that's made Zimmer, Brian Tyler, Blake Neely, and even Fernando Velasquez so well known. Listening to tracks No Seat Belts Required do such a great job of blending that Penguins comedy with the darker aspect of The Dark Knight reminds you there is plenty of room for this kind of self-reverential humor in today's scores. Check out additional tracks like Chaos in Gotham which shows just how diverse Balfe is kicking it here without laying on that cheese. A Long Farewell takes a bit of Hercules, a midge of The Flash, and amps up the absolute cool of big score sounds.

We thought 2016 was a pretty special year in terms of scores, but 2017 has already gifted us with some great soundtrack music, including The LEGO Batman Movie – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Balfe is in his element here, reveling in the world of Batman by bringing his comedic musical genius to an emerging genre that will hopefully see him eventually return to score another Penguins movie (if that one ever gets made). The album features an entire set of vocal performances including all of Will Arnett's Batman-voiced tracks. I'm sure many of these will find their way into phone playlist, because they're just so much fun to take in. That's what LEGO movies bring, why we're entering a really great period for that subgenre, and why I can't recommend this soundtrack enough.

The LEGO Batman Movie – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is available now digitally, with a vinyl release happening on May 19, 2017.

Movie Review: #AUnitedKingdom

Race, love, colonialism, politics, and diamonds are all on the table in the period drama A United Kingdom

Review by Matt Cummings

A United Kingdom posits an important question without being willing to come up with an answer: why is race still such a politically-charged subject for so many around the world? Viewers will need to find those answers elsewhere, although the few that will see this indie drama will enjoy the well-appointed acting and beautifully-shot landscapes, while chagrining at its paint-by-the-numbers racist villains.

Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo), heir to the kingdom of Bechuanaland and (eventually) his country’s first democratically-elected president, falls in love with Ruth (Rosamund Pike) while studying law in 1947 London. Ruth, a beautiful but simple office worker, shares Khama's love of jazz, but is aware that many (including her father) don't approve of her grand plan to marry Khama. Neither does the English government, lead by a snooty chancellor (Jack Davenport), who together act as protectorates from the evil intentions of South Africa. But when the couple naively fly to Bechuanaland in defiance, they realize that racism might travel in both directions, as Khama's people don't want Ruth as their queen. Faced with withering support abroad and at home, Ruth and Khama forge a quiet resistance, while Seretse's uncle demands the future king divorce Ruth or give up his throne. Their efforts - and the discovery of diamonds in this disease-ridden and desolate country - will alter Bechuanaland forever and serve as a blueprint for for future protesters the idea behind peaceful resistance.

Director Amma Asante first caught my attention with her 2014 period drama Belle, and much like Kingdom, it follows a similar idea. She never dives too deeply into the water of racism, but isn't quite caught wading into the kiddie pool either. Asante does excel at telling a direct story, mixing interesting bits of history into the narrative and forcing her characters to react. She's a competent filmmaker, joined here by Cinematographer Sam McCurdy, who bathes both the African outback and bustling London in gorgeous colors. Her leads are also extremely talented, with Oyelowo coming across as a dignified and charming hero for his people and making Pike's Ruth an equal in almost every way sans her lack of title. Pike is the kind of actress we love to see, which the camera loves, and who has recently turned in a series of excellent performances (Gone Girl and Jack Reacher). These elements manage to bribe the audience with its charm and confidence, all while hiding Kingdom's many faults.

Kingdom's first act is beset by whipsaw tonal shifts and poor editing. You can see that every scene has been unceremoniously trimmed for time, as Asante desires to keep the story moving towards the more juicier elements of Act 2. But it's hacksaw all the way there, bumping and bruising its elegant motif just to save 10-15 minutes of (maybe) interesting set up. Once we get to the meat of the film, it becomes something else, perhaps that interesting political drama we were waiting for. But it also features a duo of mustache-twirling baddies including Davenport and later Tom Fulton, whom I've recently enjoyed in The Flash, mostly because he's not the bully from Harry Potter but a sympathetic victim and a bit of an English jerk. Here, he's just a thinly-envisioned amalgam of apartheid-esque viewpoints, as he and Davenport become mere plot devices made simply for us to hate.

We never get much detail about the people of Bechuanaland, who make an incredibly difficult decision to forgo hundreds of years of tradition to bring their kingdom into the modern era. That alone should have been an entire movie, laid out by a deep and talented black cast, but instead Asante props Oyelowo on the hood of a car and makes an impassioned speech that of course wins over the crowd. All of this storytelling is accelerated, ostensibly because this is supposed to be a story of love and perseverance, but so much interesting stuff is happening behind it that I wish we had been given more time to let it all play out. Granted, we would be talking about a lot longer film, but much like its approach to racism, Kingdom merely paints by the numbers instead of bravely forging its own message.

A United Kingdom is a typical indie movie that works too hard to rise above its many, many plot points. It can't decide if it's a shrewd commentary on race, a love story, or a political drama. But it's gorgeous and well-acted, even if its villains are mustache-twirly in their openly racist views. Given the charged political atmosphere of a Trump America, A United Kingdom might be worth your time to remind you of what our world promises to be when we lift our preconceived notions about race and accept each other as equals.

A United Kingdom is rated PG-13 for some language including racial epithets and a scene of sensuality and has a runtime of 111 minutes.

#TheBelkoExperiment CLAYMATION SHORT #1

Watch The Belko Experiment in bloody, beautiful, NSFW claymation, courtesy of Lee Hardastle.

In a twisted social experiment, a group of 80 Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogata, Colombia and ordered by an unknown voice coming from the company's intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed.

The Belko Experiment stars John Gallagher Jr., Tony Goldwyn, John C. McGinley and Michael Rooker.

Written by the acclaimed writer/director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither) and directed by Greg McLean (creator of the Wolf Creek franchise), THE BELKO EXPERIMENT is a terrifying, provocative and at times hilarious thrill-ride that literally provokes the question; what does it take to survive at work?

From Orion Pictures, THE BELKO EXPERIMENT stars John Gallagher Jr. (“The Newsroom”, 10 Cloverfield Lane), Tony Goldwyn (“Scandal”), John C. McGinley (“Stan Against Evil,” “Scrubs”), Adria Arjona (“True Detective”), Josh Brener (“Silicon Valley”) and Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy). Nightwing Movie On It's Way

THR is reporting Chris McKay will helm a film based on the DC character Dick Grayson, best known as a member of the Batman family.

Warner Bros. is plotting a new DC superhero film based on the Batman-centric character Nightwing.

Chris McKay, who most recently directed The Lego Batman Movie for Warner Bros., is in negotiations to helm the new live-action film, and Bill Dubuque (The Accountant) is writing the script.

Nightwing, aka Dick Grayson, is perhaps best known for being the original Robin. Grayson was the youngest member of a family of acrobats known as the Flying Graysons. He was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and illustrator Jerry Robinson, and first introduced in Detective Comics No. 38 in April 1940. After his parents were murdered, he was taken in as the legal ward of Bruce Wayne/Batman. He then became Robin and teamed up with the Dark Knight on many an adventure to fight crime in the city of Gotham.

Grayson famously shed his persona in the 1980s as the character aged up, and became the leader of the Teen Titans. (In the DC Universe, a succession of young men took on the mantle of Robin while Nightwing became a popular character in his own right, headlining his own comics and appearing in animated movies.)

McKay has already directed a film with Dick Grayson in it: The character appeared in Lego Batman, as Robin, and was voiced by Michael Cera. Nightwing will be his live-action feature film debut.

The character of Robin has yet to officially appear in the new Warner Bros. movies, although his graffiti-covered suit was shown in Batman v. Superman, and director Zack Snyder has said that at that point in time Robin had been killed by the Joker (there have been multiple Robins over the years in the comics, and Snyder did not say which one was killed by the Joker in his film, although it is likely Jason Todd if the film is aligning with the comics).

The Nightwing project joins Warner Bros.' growing DC Extended Universe as the studio focuses on mining some of DC's most beloved characters for new films (as an example, Gotham City Sirens, with David Ayer attached to direct, will focus on the female villains of the universe, including Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn). The next films to hit theaters include Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot (June 2), the star-studded Justice League (Nov. 17) and Aquaman starring Jason Momoa (Oct. 5, 2018). A sequel to Suicide Squad, The Batman starring Ben Affleck, a Shazam film, a Flash film and a Cyborg project are also in the works.

McKay made his feature-film helming debut with hit animated superhero comedy The Lego Batman Movie, which has earned $182.4 million to date after hitting theaters on Feb. 21. He previously worked on The Lego Movie as an animation co-director, and has also directed three seasons of series Robot Chicken.

Along with The Accountant (which starred current Batman Ben Affleck), Dubuque previously wrote The Judge and A Family Man.

Movie Review: #RockDog

A Tibetan Mastiff seeks rock n' roll glory in a visually appealing but forgettable kids flick.

Review by Matt Cummings
If the seemingly recent and large wave of animated films has made you feel a bit burned out, you're not alone. They seem to happen every month now, with many failing to establish themselves as anything more than excuses to get the kids out of the house. Rock Dog is one of these middle-of-the-road, non-offensive flicks, gorgeously rendered but failing entirely to capture our hearts with its paper-thin, almost corporate storyline of big dreams and plug-and-play rock anthems. The Tibetan Mastiff Bodi (Luke Wilson) lives in the pretty mountain village of Snow Mountain, where sheep wool dominates the economy. For a period though, music also set the stage, until an attack by wolves forced Bodi's gruff father and defender Khampa (J.K. Simmons) to stop the tunes and focus on defense. Using those same shorn sheep, Khampa builds fake mastiffs with mean snarls to keep the ever-watching wolves at bay. But the scatter-brained Bodi won't have any of it, especially when one day a small plane loses its load near Snow Mountain, depositing among other things a radio. Fixated on the rock music pouring out of it, Bodi instantly idolizes hero Angus Scattergood (Eddie Izzard), hoping to one day play just like the cool kitty. Determined to find his own path, Bodi leaves for the big city but endures failures and mockery until a chance meeting with Angus sends the two on a journey that will see Bodi realize his dream while putting his village at risk of invasion. Rock Dog is not a terrible movie. It features stunning animation - on par with Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks - and its unique opening is straight up Samurai Jack. It features good-to-excellent voice casting, including Wilson and Izzard who deliver moments of pure mayhem that resonate with my inner Bugs Bunny. Had it fashioned these elements into something more meaningful, I might have had a better reaction. But soon it devolves into a standard vanilla story with no real stakes for our heroes and a series of entirely predictable story beats. There's never a true cost exacted upon Bodi when he leaves his mountain home, nor does the backstory of his incredible power make any sense; additionally, the idea that it hasn't been attacked for years by wolves who aren't smart or cunning enough to try makes little sense. And when it gets attacked, we check off yet another moment we saw coming a mile away. Moreover, its unique ending - that's the only way I can describe it - plays out in a completely new and uncharacteristic way; but it's an odd moment that's not quite explained and whose background should have been repeated more throughout the film. The idea that Bodi has a magical musical power that can unite people is a really great idea, on par with Bill and Ted using rock n' roll to achieve the same thing. But these and other chances to win our hearts are constantly ignored for moments of slapstick - some of which are truly funny - that take away from the script by Director/Writer Ash Bannon and Writer Denise Bradley. What doesn't fail is the good-to-great voice acting, including Sam Elliot as a wise Yak and SNL-er Keenan Thompson as a gangster wolf. Rock Dog suffered in the Chinese market before arriving here, and its flaws are as evident as those statues atop the mountain. And yet, it's enjoyable, mindless fun that kids under 10 will probably like a lot. And it will work for parents who've already taken their kids to see LEGO Batman multiple times and need something new to keep their children happy. But it will in few ways separate itself from a growing list of animated releases, many of whose plotlines and paper-thin characters have begun to bleed into each other. Beautifully rendered with a Samurai Jack-style opening, Rock Dog is stronger in its parts than in its whole. The idea that music can unite us all is a nice message for kids, but it's missing so much in its narrative that I can only recommend it as a rental. It's possible that future viewings might help my appreciation for it, but that assumes I will make an effort that is highly unlikely. Rock Dog is rated PG for action and language and has a runtime of 80 minutes. Discuss this review with fellow SJF fans on Facebook. Movie Review: Get Out

An original horror film? Get out!

Review by Brandon Wolfe

Jordan Peele, one half of the comedy duo Key and Peele, doesn’t, put mildly, seem like a natural fit for the horror genre. A lifelong horror fan, Peele had noted that the genre, while no stranger to tackling social issues, has never really grappled with the subject of race in any substantial way (he has said that the original Night of the Living Dead was the closest the genre has come, but Tales from the Hood probably merits at least a mention). To wit, Peele has made his directorial debut with the racially tinged Get Out, a story that addresses race head-on. The question that immediately emerges is whether or not such a dyed-in-the-wool comedy fixture could make a straightforward, serious-minded horror film. The answer is a full-throated “sorta.”

Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) is a college student six months deep into an exceedingly cutesy relationship with Rose (Girls’ Allison Williams). Rose invites Chris to accompany her to visit her affluent family at their stately home far away from civilization. Chris is nervous because Rose has neglected to give her parents a heads-up that he is black. Rose shrugs off his concerns, helpfully noting that her father would have voted for Obama a third time were he able to. Upon arriving, Chris meets Rose’s outwardly agreeable parents, Dean and Missy Armitage (Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener), but immediately picks up a strange vibe wafting through their abode. Their surly son Jeremy (Caleb Landry Jones) barely bothers to veil his puffed-chest aggression toward Chris. The Armitages’ two black caretakers (Betty Gabriel and Marcus Henderson) seem eerily vacant and constantly look askance at Chris. At a dinner party, the rich, white attendees seem fixated on Chris, their pleasantries alternately condescending and suspicious, while the lone black guest (Keith Stanfield) attacks Chris, seemingly triggered by the flash of his phone.

As the oddness and apprehension continue to mount up, Chris turns to surreptitious phone conversations with his best friend, boastful TSA agent Rod (Lil Rel Howery), as a sounding board for his ordeal. He also leans on Rose, the one person he can trust in the Armitage clan. But soon the warning signs give way to what’s really going on with this family, plunging Chris into a grave situation that he is forced to fight his way out of to survive.

Get Out is an oddly structured film, no doubt the result of Peele’s desire to make a genuine horror film while also having no desire to shed his natural bent as a satirist. At first, the film seems to be setting itself up a racially charged Meet the Parents, mining Chris’ predicament for uneasy humor. Chris is forced to plaster on a smile as old white people patronize him with awkward references to Obama or Tiger Woods, or, worse, pepper him with thoughtless musings on how the racial “pendulum” is now swinging in his favor. Peele could have made an entirely bloodless, yet equally unnerving horror film simply out of the social nightmare Chris finds himself enmeshed in here. The material is at once insightful, darkly humorous and deeply discomforting.

But Peele has also made a horror film that wants you to cringe from bloodletting as well as from white-privilege obliviousness, and it’s in this turn that Get Out goes to some truly strange places, in ways both iffy and great. For instance, when the film’s endgame is revealed, Peele moves the goalposts. The film ceases to be about white fear and mistrust toward blacks, but rather about white envy and co-option of black traits. This is a somewhat jarring turn, exacerbated by the grisly and bizarre means the film chooses to illustrate it in a proper horror context, and it doesn’t quite land. However, once the final carnage begins to be dished out, Get Out isn’t simply ferociously entertaining, but also truly cathartic in the era of Black Lives Matter. Chris isn’t just killing monsters, he’s killing avatars of longstanding dehumanization. They themselves might be exaggerated, but the mindsets that they represent are not.

Get Out also gets a major boost from Howery’s Rod, who is truly hilarious in every scene in which he appears, even if he clashes with the rest of the film by seeming as though he wandered in from an uncommonly funny Barbershop sequel. And while the film doesn’t quite use Whitford and Keener to their fullest potential, it’s difficult to imagine any role utilizing Allison Williams as effectively as this one. Williams, with her plasticine beauty, is the perfect embodiment of wholesome, entitled whiteness (Peele leans into it, too, in a scene where Williams drinks a glass of milk with the Dirty Dancing soundtrack blaring through her earbuds), yet her slightly demented smile also dovetails with the film’s off-kilter aura. Kaluuya, also, anchors the film with a performance far more nuanced than a horror protagonist is often allowed.

In a genre that all too often is content to wallow in familiarity and formula, Get Out feels refreshingly alive. It’s impossible to ever predict where this film is going, and even if where it ends up doesn’t entirely work, its crowdpleasing sensibilities have kicked in too strongly by that point to resist. Ignore the title; you’re gonna want to get in on this.

Matt Reeves Will Direct Batman Solo Film

By: April Meneghetti
Matt Reeves has closed a deal to direct “The Batman.”

Reeves took over the reins as director after Ben Affleck stepped aside to focus on starring as the Caped Crusader. Reeves will also produce the movie.

News broke last week that negotiations had collapsed, but that there was a strong possibility that they could resume. WB had offered Reeves the directing gig two weeks ago after Affleck exited the film.

Sources stressed last week that it was a priority for the studio to sign a helmer as soon as possible in order to move the pre-production forward.

“I have loved the Batman story since I was a child,” Reeves said. “He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”

Reeves, Affleck, and the studio can now focus on moving the film into production and begin casting. Sources indicate that Chris Terrio turned in a script that pleased both the studio and Affleck. A release date has not been set yet for the superhero tentpole.

This marks Reeves’ first comic book adaptation. The filmmaker helped launch the “Cloverfield” franchise and reinvent the “Planet of the Apes” series, with “War for the Planet of the Apes” bowing this summer.

#Cars3 Teaming Up With @NASCAR

Disney•Pixar’s “Cars 3” is teaming up with NASCAR this year as crowd favorite Lightning McQueen prepares to return to the big screen June 16, 2017. Plans for the joint effort were shared by “Cars 3” director Brian Fee, Cristela Alonzo—the voice of the film’s elite trainer Cruz Ramirez—and NASCAR’S vice president of entertainment marketing & content development Zane Stoddard today at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida as fans gear up for the DAYTONA 500 (live Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. ET on FOX). Owen Wilson, the voice of Lightning McQueen, will serve as grand marshal for the 59th annual “Great American Race.”

See more images after the Jump...

NASCAR drivers Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Daniel Suárez and Bubba Wallace will join NASCAR legends Jeff Gordon and Richard Petty as voices in the upcoming film.

“‘Cars 3’ very much pays homage to stock car racing and its rich history,” said Fee. “Our story leans into the drama, emotion and excitement NASCAR fans find at every race.”

“We’re excited to take part in delivering the ‘Cars 3’ experience to our current and next generation of fans, at-track, in school, online and across the country,” added Stoddard. “In addition to all the engaging NASCAR ‘Cars 3’ elements industry-wide, we think our fans will really enjoy the roles of several young drivers in the film.”

According to Lylle Breier, senior vice president, worldwide marketing partnerships and special events for the Walt Disney Studios, the movie inspired an expanded program with NASCAR. “This collaboration marks the biggest between the ‘Cars’ franchise and NASCAR,” said Breier. “We’re looking forward to a fun and exciting season-long program with a host of activities.”

FAST FORWARD
Kicking off at the DAYTONA 500 with the premiere of a new on-air promo, the NASCAR-“Cars 3” collaboration continues throughout the entire race season.
· The joint effort will include a variety of marketing initiatives, including digital and social cross promotional activities and sweepstakes.
· Throughout the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, races will feature a “Cars 3” at-track presence via a wide array of promotions.
· A co-branded merchandise program with Fanatics—the first of its kind for NASCAR and the “Cars” franchise—will also kick off at the DAYTONA 500 featuring the first film-related product available for fans to purchase. Product will be available at the Fanatics Trackside Superstore continuing at race tracks throughout the season, as well as online at the NASCAR.com Superstore.
· NASCAR Acceleration Nation, the sport’s youth program, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame will be featured throughout the full duration of a “Cars 3” nationwide tour.
· Later this year, NASCAR and Disney will release NASCAR Acceleration Nation and "Cars 3" co-branded in-classroom learning materials for elementary school students

THE VOICES OF NASCAR
The announcement included the introduction of NASCAR greats—from rookie drivers and legends to the voices behind the sport—tapped by Pixar Animation Studios to voice characters in the film.
· CHASE ELLIOTT, 21, was named 2016’s Sunoco Rookie of the Year after finishing last season tenth in the driver standings. Elliott, who pilots the No. 24 car previously driven by four-time champion Jeff Gordon, lends his voice to second-generation Piston Cup racer CHASE RACELOTT in “Cars 3.” Racelott’s blend of skills, track smarts and top-of-the-line technology make this rookie a real contender.
· RYAN BLANEY, a 23-year-old, third-generation racer, pilots the No. 21 Ford in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series. He voices third-generation racer RYAN “INSIDE” LANEY in “Cars 3.” Known for his racing passion and ability to have fun on the track, Laney races with talent, speed and precision.
· DANIEL SUÁREZ, who just turned 25, pilots the No. 19 ARRIS Toyota Camry in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. The 2016 NASCAR XFINITY Series champion can be heard in the film voicing DANNY SWERVEZ, a next-gen racer who’s ascending the Piston-Cup ladder against all odds. A mid-season replacement, Swervez is a quick learner who pushes himself to the limit.
· BUBBA WALLACE, 23, won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Martinsville Speedway in 2013, becoming the first African American to win in one of the top three touring divisions since Wendell Scott in 1963. In “Cars 3,” Wallace voices next-gen stock car racer BUBBA WHEELHOUSE, a fast and tenacious young racer who knows how to win.
· DARRELL WALTRIP, the NASCAR Hall of Fame racer-turned-NASCAR on FOX color analyst lends his voice to DARRELL CARTRIP. Cartrip, a veteran Piston-Cup announcer also heard in “Cars” and “Cars 2,” may think he’s seen it all—but this new season might still have a surprise or two in store.
· SHANNON SPAKE, NASCAR on FOX correspondent and college football and basketball reporter for FOX Sports, voices on-the-track reporter SHANNON SPOKES in the film. Spokes weaves her way into the middle of the action for in-the-moment interviews, and she’s not afraid to ask racers the tough questions.
· HOWARD AUGUSTINE “HUMPY” WHEELER JR., the legendary NASCAR promoter and former president and GM of Charlotte Motor Speedway, lends his voice to iconic Dinoco team owner TEX DINOCO in “Cars 3.” Tex, who met Lightning McQueen in “Cars,” would love nothing more than to see #95 decked out in Dinoco blue.
· JEFF GORDON, four-time NASCAR champion, current NASCAR on FOX analyst, and story consultant for “Cars 3,” lends his voice to JEFF GORVETTE. Gorvette, whose number of top-ten finishes remains unmatched, may have hung up his racing tires—but his heart remains on the track. His ability to succeed at all levels turned hoods wherever he raced.
· RICHARD “THE KING" PETTY, team owner and champion NASCAR driver with 200 wins, returns to the role of STRIP “THE KING” WEATHERS. From his humble beginnings on the Piston-Cup circuit to the glitzy sponsorship and media attention, the champion racer now serves as crew chief for his nephew, Cal Weathers.
· KYLE PETTY, retired NASCAR driver and current NASCAR commentator on NBC, helps bring CAL WEATHERS to life in “Cars 3.” Weathers grew up around the track watching his uncle, Strip “The King” Weathers, tear it up. The veteran racer finds himself taking a step back to make room for the next generation on the track.
· MIKE JOY is FOX Sports’ lead NASCAR announcer who will call his 38th DAYTONA 500 this Sunday. He lends his iconic voice to on-the-spot radio talk show host MIKE JOYRIDE in the movie. Joyride stays one step ahead in the racing news game by keeping a keen eye on where the racing season is headed.
· RAY EVERNHAM, winner of three NASCAR championships as crew chief for Jeff Gordon and current consultant to Hendrick Motorsports, lends his voice to RAY REVERHAM, Jackson Storm’s crew chief, and an expert at training in the cutting edge technology and tactics being used by the next-gen racers. Evernham also serves as a story consultant for filmmakers.

LIFE-SIZED CHARACTERS
NASCAR fans can picture themselves with Lightning McQueen and Cruz Ramirez—or at least life-sized cars designed to look like the big-screen characters. The Cruz Ramirez look-alike premiered in Daytona today, alongside #95—the Lightning McQueen car made its debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in January. Comedian and actress Cristela Alonzo got to hang with her character look-alike at the event. “I am excited to be here as race fans get to see these two life-sized characters together for the first time,” said Alonzo.

The Lightning McQueen and Cruz Ramirez look-alike cars are slated to make appearances at select races throughout the season as part of a “Cars 3” nationwide tour. Joining them on the tour will be a look-alike of Lightning McQueen’s on-track rival, Jackson Storm.

GOING GRAND
As was previously announced, Owen Wilson, the voice of Lightning McQueen, will serve as grand marshal of the DAYTONA 500 this Sunday, Feb. 26. Wilson has provided the voice of the red car in all of the “Cars” films.

ABOUT THE MOVIE
Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez (voice of Cristela Alonzo), with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage! Directed by Brian Fee (storyboard artist “Cars,” “Cars 2“) and produced by Kevin Reher (“A Bug’s Life,” “La Luna” short), “Cars 3” cruises into theaters on June 16, 2017.

Hellboy 3 Isn't Going To Happen Anytime Soon

Bad news if your hopes were recently raised by director Guillermo del Toro drumming up support for a third Hellboy movie. According to a tweet from the man himself, it's really, officially not happening this time.

There have been flares of flaming hope in the last few years, hope that was then quashed by the hard realities of filmmaking. Hellboy 3 is not a movie that can necessarily be made by crowdfunding, and rights issues make shopping it around tough.

So despite the driving passion of GDT, Ron Perlman and others to finish the trilogy with one more film, the book appears closed on that front. Of course, there remains the chance that del Toro could find some other outlet for the story, especially in comic book form. Which would be fitting given Big Red's roots.

And at least we get to enjoy more del Toro filmmaking: his latest, The Shape Of Water, should be with us later this year.

Iwan Rheon Joins Upcoming #Inhumans Show

If you're seeking complexity in your superhero TV, Marvel's Inhumans could very well be the answer, a point supported by the casting of Iwan Rheon in the role of Maximus.

As he's previously proven on shows like Misfits, and, particularly, Game Of Thrones (where he played Ramsay Bolton), complicated is his comfort zone. "The characters I tend to play are a little more intresting than the standard heroes," Rheon recently mused. "Romantic leads can be a little more straightforward, I guess. But it just seems to be the parts I get; I don't know what that says about me. I enjoy interesting characters and interesting people, I suppose."

Inhumans are a race of transformed humans genetically engineered by the Kree, who embedded them with the ability to acquire superhuman abilities. The focus of the series is on the Inhuman royal family, led by Black Bolt. Marvel describes the Maximus character as being charming, clever and devoted to his people, particularly his brother, Black Bolt, though he does yearn to wear the crown — which should embody that level of complexity we've been talking about.

Showrunner/executive producer Scott Buck (who holds the same position on Netflix's Iron Fist), offers, "Maximus is a complex character. Likable, charming, tragic and villainous all in the same moment, and I’m very excited to have someone of Iwan’s considerable talent.”

Executive producer Jeph Loeb adds that the actor's proven record of bringing a roguish charm, while still conveying a sense of danger about him, "were all different sides we needed to bring the character to life."

There's a lot that's unique about Inhumans, including the show's planned roll out. This September the first two episodes will be presented on IMAX screens for two weeks, followed by the show's debut on television.

Jamie Chung Cast As Blink In Upcoming X-Men Show

Variety reporting Another X-Men character has been cast in Fox’s Marvel pilot from Matt Nix and Bryan Singer.

Jamie Chung will star as Blink, the popular character from the comics with the power of teleportation.

The untitled action-adventure series is a hot project at Fox with A-listers behind the scenes. Nix penned the pilot and will serve as executive producer with Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb, Jim Chory and Bryan Singer, who is on board to direct the pilot.

The pilot from 20th Century Fox TV and Marvel Television will focus on two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

Chung’s character Blink — real name Clarice Fong — is described as sarcastic, lively and a bit of a tomboy. Her naturally strong exuberance has taken a hit after a sudden and traumatic upheaval of her life. As she adjusts to the new people and places that are suddenly “home,” she is slowly becoming herself again.

Chung is the second series regular to sign onto the pilot. She joins Blair Redford (“Switched At Birth”) who will play another mutant, Sam, the strong-headed leader of the underground network. A slew of other superhero characters are currently in the process of being cast.

Should the pilot be greenlit to series, the show would mark Chung’s biggest broadcast project yet. She was a regular on NBC’s short-lived drama “Believe,” though the series was canceled after one season. She recently appeared on another superhero-based series at Fox with a recurring role on “Gotham.” She also played Mulan in an ongoing part on ABC’s “Once Upon A Time,” and will recur on Hulu’s upcoming season of “Casual.” Chung rose to fame as a contestant on “Real World” and is credited with becoming one of the most successful alums of the MTV reality show.
