We look back at 13 under-appreciated films from the previous year that are worth a second look. Having passed the halfway point of the 2014 movie season, we began to think back on the 2013 movie season and were amazed that many of our Top 30 films didn't exactly hit homeruns with audiences. Rather than blame ourselves for being so wrong, we've sought to bring these back into the consciousness by highlighting them below. Given time away from them, some titles can take on new life, far exceeding their lackluster box office results. Luckily, the home market is more vibrant than ever, and with services like Netflix always adding new content from 2013, it's easier than ever to catch these little gems. In that spirit, we present 13 movies from 2013 that deserve another look. To be clear: these are films which rank 40 or lower according to BoxOfficeMojo's 2013 box office results, and were released before the end of the year. They can also be films that were critic

Tom Cruise Will Star In "Yukikaze"

With a $61 million opening weekend overseas on Universal Pictures ’ Oblivion , who could blame Tom Cruise for wanting to stay in science fiction mode? International Trailer For Oblivion

Here is the new international trailer for Oblivion . Oblivion, directed by Tron Legacy’s Joseph Kosinski , takes place in a world where Earth has been badly damaged by decades of war with an alien race known as the Scavs. Most of the population lives above the planet, but Cruise’s Jack Harper is a drone repairman, stationed on the Earth to keep the robo-guardians of the place active against enemy incursion. But his mission is interrupted when he rescues a beautiful stranger ( Andrea Riseborough ) from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that makes him question everything he knows… (Cue dramatic musical string, which we’d guess might be an Inception-style parp of horns). Tom Cruise On Board For The Magnificent Seven Remake

Chalk one more title up on the board marked “Remakes.” Though this one is more of the wheel of cinematic life turning, as The Magnificent Seven is remade by Hollywood. MGM has decided to dip once more into the cupboard of title rights it owns and is now developing a new version of John Sturges' 1960 classic with Tom Cruise attached to star. Before you get all up in high dudgeon about the desecration of a classic, remember that The Magnificent Seven is itself a remake of Seven Samurai . This one is still at a very embryonic stage, with no director or writer attached, though Variety has heard that the company is even now kicking off the hunt for someone to scribble the script. So we don’t yet know whether it will exactly follow the plot of the original, which sees a group of American gunmen hired to protect a Mexican village from a group of bandits. There’s also no word on which of the movie’s meaty characters Cruise is interested in. He already has plenty of active and po

Emily Blunt In Talks To Join Tom Cruise In All You Need Is Kill

While more attention has been focused recently on Tom Cruise’s first sci-fi project for the year, the long-gestating Joseph Kosinsky film Oblivion , another high-profile, high concept film – Doug Liman’s All You Need Is Kill has been chugging along in development. Cruise has been locked in for a while, and the question has turned to the movie’s female lead, with word arriving that Emily Blunt is now in talks to sign on. Kill has had its own lengthy journey towards the screen, with Liman aboard in 2010 and Cruise signing on last December. Adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s graphic novel, the plot follows a soldier killed in action fighting aliens who is forced to endure his final battle again and again, Groundhog Day-style until he gets it right. If she locks down the role, Blunt will be one of Cruise’s fellow troops. With a script from Dante Harper now going through rewrites courtesy of Joby Harold, the movie should be shooting later this year. Warner Bros., which has been

Melissa Leo Joins Oblivion

Melissa Leo has been set for Oblivion , the Joseph Kosinski-directed futuristic Universal Pictures thriller that stars Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough and Olga Kurylenko . Morgan Freeman Joins Tom Cruise In Oblivion

Tom Cruise Morgan Freeman will bring his regal presence to Oblivion , the Joseph Kosinski-directed film for Universal Pictures that stars Tom Cruise, Andrea Riseborough and Olga Kurylenko . Cruise plays the last man on a post-apocalyptic and nearly uninhabitable Earth, who stays behind to repair ships that hunt down and blast a virulent alien species. I haven’t yet been able to figure out what role Freeman will play, but I’m told it’s a critical part. Michael Arndt is currently rewriting a script that had earlier drafts by William Monahan and Karl Gajdusek. Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark are producing through Chernin Entertainment along with Barry Levine and Kosinski. Jesse Berger and Dave Morrison are executive producers. Freeman’s last starring role in a Universal film was Wanted, and before that he twice played God in Bruce Almighty and the spinoff Evan Almighty. Please Leave A Comment- Source- Deadline

Hayley Atwell Is On Board For The Return Of Captain Nemo

Hayley Atwell has been piped on board The Return Of Captain Nemo , a $10 million 3D sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea that hopes to start shooting January 16. David Morrissey , star of Brit TV’s Red Riding, is also attached to this Captain Nemo adventure, to be directed by Pearry Teo. Atwell — who has just tested for Universal’s Joseph Kosinski -directed Tom Cruise science fiction film Oblivion – will play the heroine Sara, while Morrissey plays her uncle, the chief adviser to President Ulysses S Grant, who frees Nemo from prison to try and discover why mysterious “sea monsters” are sinking ships up and down the Atlantic Coast. Hugh Bonneville, star of PBS/ITV period drama Downton Abbey, has already been announced as Nemo. Producer Amy Krell says she is closing the finance from U.S., Asian and UK investors, and will shoot in Romania. Like 300, The Return Of Captain Nemo will be shot entirely onstage using green screen and CGI. “We would have to double our production costs if w

The Departed Screenwriter Joins Sin City 2

Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller are bringing in some Oscar-winning firepower to help shape the script for Sin City 2 , the sequel to their 2005 hit graphic novel adaptation. William Monahan , who won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay for 2006’s The Departed , has been hired to work on the script, according to sources, supplementing a draft completed recently by Miller. Momentum has been building lately behind the long-in-development sequel to Sin City , which grossed a healthy $100 million worldwide in 2005. Rodriguez, who co-directed the original with Miller (who scripted and authored the source material), said at Comic-Con in July that financing for the sequel had been arranged and shooting would begin as soon as a script could be locked, possibly by the end of this year. It’s not clear which actors would return from the original, though rumors on fan websites have suggested a storyline featuring the characters played by Mickey Rourke and Jessica Alba . Rodriguez indic

Tom Cruise Wants Jack Reacher "One Shot"

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions are negotiating with Tom Cruise to star this fall in One Shot , a thriller based on the Lee Child book series about former military policeman-turned-drifter Jack Reacher . Christopher McQuarrie will direct his script. The talks going on right now is for Cruise to make the movie before he stars in the Joseph Kosinski-directed Oblivion at Universal, which starts in January. Making a Cruise deal is always tricky, and if the One Shot deal takes awhile to come together, it would happen after Oblivion shoots next year. Paramount will co-finance the film with Skydance Productions, whose principal David Ellison also co-financed Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol . Fans of the Reacher book will have to absorb this development, because Cruise is very different physically from the bruising tough guy who has created mayhem over 15 bestselling novels that have sold 40 million copies. In the books, Reacher is 6'5," about 250 pounds, a

Tom Cruise To Star In "Oblivion"

Tom Cruise has committed to star for Universal Pictures in Oblivion , the science fiction film that will be directed by Joseph Kosinski , who last helmed Tron: Legacy . Production will begin in October. Cruise had been loosely attached to the Radical Publishing graphic novel adaptation when Disney let it go and Universal committed to finance and distribute the $100 million film, which came with a William Monahan script that was being rewritten by Karl Gajdusek. Kosinski hatched the idea for the project and set it to be published by Barry Levine's graphic novel imprint as a calling card for a movie when Kosinski was busy for so long directing Tron: Legacy, which topped out at $400 million worldwide gross. Disney acquired the graphic novel in a heated auction last summer, and Universal was one of the studios that also chased it. It takes place in an apocalyptic future where most of the population lives in clouds above an earth surface that has been rendered uninhabitable. Cruise

Universal Wants To Get Their Hands On "Oblivion" & Have Tom Cruise Star

Universal Pictures has emerged as the front-runner to finance and distribute Oblivion , the Joseph Kosinski-directed sci-fi project that has Tom Cruise in early talks to star. The studio has entered into exclusive negotiations for a deal that would carry progress to production language, with a goal to begin shooting in October. The deal hinges on Kosinski's ability to bring in the film at around the $100 million mark. Cruise doesn't have a deal at this point, but they are talking. Deadline told you last week that Universal was among three studios chasing the film. The film was scripted by William Monahan, with Karl Gajdusek currently rewriting. Oblivion recently shook loose from Disney, where Kosinski made his feature directorial debut on Tron: Legacy. That film just hit the $400 million worldwide gross mark for Disney, and the studio has a Tron sequel and other projects with Kosinski. But the studio let the filmmaker shop it because the post-apocalyptic Oblivion premise d

Jon Favreau to Direct Magic Kingdom For Disney

Jon Favreau Got His Mickey Ears On Jon Favreau is in talks to direct Magic Kingdom , the Disney film with the premise that the attractions at the venerable theme park come to life. The studio set the project up nearly two years ago and got a draft by Battlestar Galactica's Ron Moore, but a new writer will be set and work on a new draft under Favreau.  Favreau will be signing a development deal, because the project will percolate while he works on other big scale studio films. He just completed Cowboys & Aliens , the DreamWorks/Universal co-production that stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford . Favreau will finish that film for release on July 29, 2011, and he is expected to re-team with Robert Downey Jr . for a third Iron Man . Magic Kingdom is being produced by Strike Entertainment partners Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, and while the studio has previously tapped theme park attractions for films like Pirates of the Caribbean , this is the first time it has created a movie

Howard And Grazer To Adapt "Legends" Graphic Novel Classic fairy tales are drawing Hollywood heat, with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment and Radical Pictures the latest to work their magic.
