TOTAL RECALL Review. Is It Worth Your Money?

TOTAL RECALL Review
By: MattInRC

TOTAL RECALL is a fun, action-packed summer blockbuster that's great eye candy and just smart enough for us nerds.

Make sure to come back soon. We got some information from a source who saw the unfinished film who gave us some comparisons from the unfinished film and the completed movie.

I remember watching Arnold Schwarzenegger's version of TOTAL RECALL when it came to theatres in 1990: sexy, sultry Sharon Stone, brandishing firearms against Arnold's Doug Quaid as he traveled to Mars to fulfill his destiny. The film raised interesting questions about memory without getting too involved in the discussion. Appearances by the alien named Quatto and Eddie the crazy cab driver turned hitman helped round out what I thought was a pretty good film. But in preparing for this review, rather than leaving its warm glow in my mind, I made the mistake of watching it again. Oh brother: campy and just plain cheesy, TR has not retained its cool 90's charm, rather it should be thrown in the corner with a litany of similar Arnold projects that were cool on arrival but failed to make their way into my Blu-ray collection.

Does the 2012 remake of TOTAL RECALL make for a difference experience, or is it also destined for a $5 Blu-ray discount stand? Luckily, the answer is Yes and no in that order. Action-packed and compactly written, TR is fun summer blockbuster fare with just a tad of intelligence for those who like striking up post-filmatic discussions about existence, memory, and a world rapidly deterioration into a giant police state.

Collin Ferrell plays Doug Quaid, a factory worker whose reoccurring dreams of being pursued by police with a strange gun-toting woman (Jessica Biel, Blade Trinity) are causing him to lose sleep. His is a world much like everyone else living in The Colony, one of only two post-apocalyptic locations on the planet not devastated by a deadly chemical war. The Colony (located in Australia but looking a lot like Japan) and the Federation of New Britain are connected by a massive transport shuttle, which the lower-class Colony workers use to travel to their factory jobs in New Brtiain. This sort of class warfare relegates The Colony to a life of hard times while New Brtiain enjoys a sunnier (and more affluent) disposition. Quaid's wife Lori (Kate Beckinsdale, Underworld series) is worried about her husband's growing sleep disorder, but is more concerned about the growing attacks by a terrorist organization headed by the enigmatic Matthias (Bill Nighy, Valkyrie), and how that will impact her job as a peacekeeper.

Nevertheless, Quaid wants answers about his dreams, and travels to the city's Vice District, where every pleasure is met for the right price (cue three-breasted hooker from the original film). Here, he travels to Rekall, a facility that imprints memories into your consciousness, giving the illusion that the patient has actually lived them. Unfortunately, Quaid seems to already have these memories, and is soon engulfed in a battle with peace officers and their robotic counterparts, New Britain's Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston,Breaking Bad), and Lori who proves to be a deadly assassin with a taste for killing Quaid. WIth no idea how he gained these secret skills in the first place, Quaid must unravel the mystery of his very existance, while keeping Cohaagen from invading The Colony to repopulate it with his people.

The film is directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld series), who richly creates a futuristic world of floating cars and cities interspersed with a police state that doesn't seem too far away from reality. A lot of this film reminds me of the Ridley Scott classic Blade Runner, with its constant rainfall, The Colony's Asian motif, and the overall gritty/clean environment that's been a mainstay of popular science fiction. Every element is upgraded from the original TR, from casting and story to the film's musical score by Harry Gregson-Williams (The Town), which will remind audiences of Daft Punk's brilliant Tron: Legacy soundscape. Ferrell plays a terrific mix of scared determination, giving us tenderness when needed but not afraid to bust out the whoopin' stick on Lori, the police, or anyone who gets in his way. He and Biel have good chemistry, and Biel's pouty lips and tough girl looks make her fun to watch. But, it's the performance of the feisty and sizzling Beckinsdale that will win over audiences. She's Underworld's Selene in every way, but adds a terrific dry sense of humor once Quaid is on the run, courtesy of writers Kurt Wimmer and Mark Bomback. Beckinsdale steals every scene she's in, and it's not just because of the underwear scene at the film's beginning. Cranston is servicable as the bad guy, as is fellow stooge Bokeem Woodbine (Ray), whose death scene is one of the film's best. And while the end was not the riveting head-scratcher of Inception, it's our trio of actors whose violent and reoccurring meetings that make this film a winner.

There's some obvious plot holes and WTF moments, such as the Asian-looking The Colony stuck in Australia and an all-too-early exit for Nighy, but there's also plenty to like about this summer blockbuster. Total Recall reminds us that sometimes remakes can be done better, provided that the right amount of credit is given to the original but still forges new ground. In that way, count Total Recall a success.

Secrets Of Disneyland. Can You Say You Have Done Any Of These?

Here's an insiders look to all the secrets that Disneyland has to hold. I can check off a few for the items on the list. Can you?

If I could live anywhere, I would live in The Haunted Mansion, like all year long," director Guillermo del Toro said last year at Comic-Con while discussing his upcoming film featuring Disneyland's iconic haunted house. And he's not alone.

Hollywood is full of filmmakers and talent who are addicted to Disneyland, which opened in 1955 and now averages 40,000 visitors a day. Zachary Levi, Gwen Stefani, John Stamos and Miley Cyrus count themselves as Anaheim regulars, and it's the date place of choice for Ryan Gosling (he's taken Kat Dennings, Blake Lively and Eva Mendes). "It's not about going on the rides as fast as possible," says music producer Matt Beckley. "It's an appreciation for the art that goes into it."

No matter how fanatical, though, few want to brave tourist hordes. With the June opening of the $200 million Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, where waiting times in lines are two hours plus, both theme parks are at peak capacity.

Luckily, there are tricks and tips to making visits as painless as possible. Hiring a VIP Premium Tour guide (from $195 to $295 an hour for a minimum of six hours, 714-300-7710 ) will result in a customized experience. The guides (called "plaids" for their signature costume) will get you into the park easily, make reservations at top culinary spots such as Napa Rose in the Grand Californian hotel and nearby Catal (which has hosted parties for Drew Barrymore and Justin Bieber) and reserve prime viewing spots for shows and parades. While plaids can't get guests to the front of every line, they can for rides in the Fastpass program, including Indiana Jones, Star Tours and all the major mountains. If your kids are "let's go again" types or autograph seekers, the guide will get them in front to meet and greet castmembers portraying everyone from Mickey to Merida, the redheaded heroine of Disney Pixar's Brave. For celebrities, park officials practically insist on VIP guides (James Threadgill is Once Upon a Time star Ginnifer Goodwin's favorite). "They don't want bedlam breaking out if Miley Cyrus is standing in line," says one insider.

There are places that VIP guides can't take you, including the private Club 33 with a 10-year-long waiting list (see sidebar, page 34). (It recently welcomed a select number of new members.) How carefully are the keys to the castle guarded? Goodwin -- who's such a fanatic, she visited the park five times during a recent six-week hiatus -- admits she recently became a member. But even she hasn't yet gotten access to the fabled Dream Suite, the only on-site guest room in the park: "I would do just about anything legal to stay there."

Pilot House on the Mark Twain River Boat
Not part of any VIP tour, the pilot house is an unofficial spot to which the captain can extend an invite. Guests need to inquire to request access -- or can just butter him or her up.

Dream Suite
This private 2,600- square-foot space is invitation-only to VIPs and kids from charities like Make A Wish. Once in a while, official fan club D23 members get sneak peeks. Access cannot be purchased. The suite has two master bedrooms, a French Provincial living room, an electric train and a full-size carousel. Says del Toro of the amenities provided by Disney Imagineer designers: "The quarters come to life at several points during the night and objects and audiovisual effects light up the room unexpectedly -- it's the essence of Disney magic."

Haunted Mansion
Aside from the beloved mansion itself, a favorite destination of Whoopi Goldberg, "there have been occasional special private dinners that are announced and sell out immediately -- they're not dinners that can be set up by request for a fee," says Chris Strodder, author of The Disneyland Encyclopedia. "There's also a cool pet cemetery feature hidden behind it, and if you ask an employee, they'll usually let you see it, though you can't walk through it." Adds Beckley: "A little thing that fanatics do is try to get the Haunted elevator to themselves and lay down in it when it goes down. They call it the stretching room -- it seems to be stretching. You look up while the portraits get smaller."

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique
Get like Stefani, a Disney fan who dressed as Cinderella for Kate Hudson's Halloween party last year, or do the more age-appropriate thing and turn a child into a Disney princess for $200, which includes makeup, nail polish, tiara and costume. Make reservations up to six months in advance -- walk-ins have about a 1 percent chance of getting in.

Matterhorn
At the top of this bobsled ride, which recently had side-by-side seating replace the lap-sitting that titillated teens for generations, is a basketball hoop. "We played basketball in the Matterhorn," says The Young and the Restless executive producer Maria Bell, who is such a fan, her husband, Bill proposed to her at the Castle. Another insider insists: "No one can go up there. It's for maintenance people."

Imagineers Tour
A private walk-through with a Disneyland designer pointing out behind-the-scenes facts and anecdotes is rare, extended only to high-level business contacts, or given away for charity. Says Bell: "We won an Imagineers tour at LACMA that was donated by Willow Bay -- we had the most amazing time."

Lily Belle Railroad Car
The luxury observation parlor car on the Disneyland railroad, named after Walt Disney's wife, has carried royalty and heads of state, including Japan's Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako, and is not always available on the track. A VIP tour guide can gain you entrance if it's present.

Walt Disney's Apartment
Overlooking the town square and built for Disney to oversee construction, this humble apartment above the fire station also housed Disney and his family, with his wife, Lillian, using the patio to entertain. Disney sometimes descended using the fire pole as a form of egress. Says Beckley, "They still leave a light on in the window in honor of Walt." Not open to the public, the apartment can be seen via a behind-the-scenes Backstage Magic tour; call 800-543-0865 to book.

Can You Find the Hidden Mickeys?
A slew of websites are devoted to identifying the "hidden Mickeys" designed into nooks and crannies throughout the park. Basic representations of Mickey can be a circle with smaller circles for ears; look for Mickeys in gears, the Space Mountain speakers, one of the Conquistador breastplates when exiting the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, and virtually every ride. "You start to see them everywhere. If you look at the Matterhorn from a certain angle, the caves converge to become a Mickey Mouse shape," says Beckley. "There are multiple layers -- you can come back and discover things you didn't notice at the beginning." There are seven on our map -- can you find them all?

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Gets A Rewrite

Chris McCoy is being tapped to rewrite Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel Studios’ space adventure movie.

Galaxy is part of Marvel’s second wave of movies and is the only new title among the crop of mostly sequels featuring Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. It was revealed as the company’s mystery movie in late June and officially announced at Comic-Con in July.

While there have been several incarnations of the team in the comics over the years, the movie’s lineup will include Drax the Destroyer, a human resurrected as a green warrior with the sole purpose of killing Thanos (the villain in the Avengers final-scene tease); Groot, a giant tree-man; Star-Lord, a gun-toting half-human/half-alien intergalactic vigilante; Rocket Raccoon, a genetically engineered animal with a knack for guns and explosives; and Gamora, the last survivor of her species who was saved by Thanos to be his assassin but now battles him.

Nicole Perlman wrote the previous draft. Perlman is graduate of Marvel’s now-defunct writing program who wrote two space-themed biopics: Challenger, about the 1986 Space Shuttle disaster, and an untitled Neil Armstrong project.

While he has yet to achieve a produced credit, McCoy is considered to have a lot of heat as a writer. The scribe has had three of his specs land on the Black List: Get Back in 2007, Good Looking in 2009 and Good Kids in 2011. His scripts have been praised for their quirky comedic bent.

NOBODY WALKS Trailer Starring Olivia Thirlby

Watch the just released trailer for NOBODY WALKS, starring John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Justin Kirk.

NOBODY WALKS premieres on VOD and iTunes September 6 and opens in theaters October 12, 2012.

Martine, a 23-year-old artist from New York, arrives in Los Angeles to stay in the pool house of a family living in the hip and hilly community of Silver Lake. Peter, the father, has agreed to help Martine complete sound design on her art film as a favor to his wife. Martine innocently enters the seemingly idyllic life of this open-minded family with two kids and a relaxed Southern California vibe. Like a bolt of lightning, her arrival sparks a surge of energy that awakens suppressed impulses in everyone and forces them to confront their own fears and desires.

Exquisitely orchestrated by Ry Russo-Young (You Won’t Miss Mescreened at the 2009 Festival) and cowritten by Lena Dunham (Tiny Furniture), this potent charting of inner urges and sufferings links characters in an intricate dance of lust, denial, and deception. Despite their issues, each comes across as fundamentally human, urging viewers to appraise the characters' morality by evaluating their own motives. Sexually charged and rigorously composed, Nobody Walks boasts an impressive cast who deliver incisive performances in this absorbing tale.

Kristen Stewart Will "Lie Down In Darkness"

Kristen Stewart may have become tabloid fodder in recent days, but the 22-year-old seems decidedly committed to being taken seriously as an actress: Vulture hears exclusively that Stewart has landed the lead role in an indie adaptation of William Styron’s 1951 novel, Lie Down In Darkness. Directed by Crazy Heart helmer Scott Cooper and set in genteel fifties Virginia, Lie Down will have Stewart play Peyton Loftis. As part of a dysfunctional and disintegrating family, Peyton is constantly compared to her crippled sister, Maudie, and her intense physical beauty makes her the object of her frigid mother’s jealous hatred and the target of her father’s incestuous, alcoholic lust. (Stewart will also appear in another fifties-era film, Walter Salles's On the Road, when it's released in the U.S. sometime this fall/winter.)

The part of Peyton had been coveted by Jennifer Lawrence, but Lawrence will spend the better part of the next year shooting sequels. (Catching Fire ignites this fall, while a new X-Men film at Fox commences shooting in January.) Set up at Open Road Media*, Darkness has been in development for years by producer Jeff Sharp (You Can Count on Me, Proof) and while it’s unclear how soon it might start production, this is a major casting hurdle cleared.

Lynn Cohen Cast In Catching Fire

Lionsgate® and the filmmakers of THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE are pleased to announce that Lynn Cohen has been cast in the role of Mags in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel Catching Fire. A former mentor to Finnick Odair, Mags is an eighty year old Hunger Games victor from District 4.

Known to New York theater audiences for decades of memorable roles, Cohen has also appeared in critically acclaimed films such as Steven Spielberg’s Munich and Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, NY, as well as commercial fare such as Sex and The City and its sequel. She can next be seen in They Came Together, with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE will be directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has sold more than 50 million books in print and digital in the U.S. alone.

Lionsgate will release THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE on November 22, 2013.

Doctor Who Is The Villain In Thor 2

British actor Christopher Eccleston, who played Doctor Who during the 2005 season of the BBC sci-fi show, is in final negotiations to play the villain in Thor 2, Marvel Studios’ sequel to its 2011 hit.

Alan Taylor is directing the picture, which is officially titled Thor: The Dark World, and brings back most of the first movie’s cast, including Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor.

Could Zachary Levi Join Thor 2?-

Plot details are being kept in the farthest reaches of Valhalla, but Ellleston will play the ruler of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim.

Eccleston has a penchant for playing bad guys, as he did in 28 Days Later, NBC’s Heroes, and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, where he played Destro.

Schwarzenegger Has The Last Stand

Ladies and gentlemen, brace yourselves. This might look like it's just a picture of a former governor of California but it is in fact your first look at the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to leading film roles - specifically, his turn in The Last Stand as Sheriff Ray Owens.

The film sees Schwarzenegger play a former LAPD officer who has retired to a quieter life in a small town called Summerton Junction, near the Mexican border. His big problems start when a drug kingpin (Eduardo Noriega) escapes police custody and makes a run for the border - with only Owens standing in his way. Desperate, he deputizes the locals to fill out his force as the druglord and his lieutenants loom ever closer.

Schwarzenegger told USA Today that his character, "hasn't had to flex his muscles in a while. So when the gangsters come to town, it's a big test."

"You're rooting for him more because he's more like us," added producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura says. "And he gets up and keeps on going. When he needs to be Arnold, he's Arnold."

August Movies That Will Make You Excited! Or Just Make MattInRC Pumped

As the summer draws to a close, MattInRC's previews the August movie release schedule, which features some of the most anticipated titles of the year.

In a summer that's seen its share of box office record breakers and downright disappointments, Hollywood ends the season on a high note, releasing some of the most anticipated movies of 2012. We've posted them by release date so make sure to add them to your calendar:

And make sure to come back often since we will be hosting screenings for all the movies listed below and much more.

Week 1: Total Recall (August 3rd)

What happens when a factory worker in a post-apocalyptic future thinks he's a super spy? Death and mayhem of course! Collin Ferrell, Jessica Biel, and Kate Beckinsdale hit the reboot button for this sci-fi romp that's had a terrific viral campaign that we noticed at SDCC.

MattInRC: If the final version is as good as what test audiences saw, we're in for a real treat! Not that any of us have seen it yet...we're just saying that it looks good.

Week 2: The Bourne Legacy (August 10th)

I give props to this franchise for changing the way we watch spy films, and it's clear that Daniel Craig owes Matt Damon a debt of gratitude for opening the spy genre into a grittier thrillride than it's ever been. VERY loosely based on Robert Ludlum's terrific series, we are introduced to a new CIA operative that seems to have gone a bit rogue. Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, and Joan Allen star.

MattInRC : Since the director is Tony Gilroy (who wrote all the previous Bourne films), and the film stars former Bourne actor Joan Allen, we're inclined to think this is more than adequate to seal the deal. Plus, Jeremy Renner kicks ass...I know, scientific explanation eh!

Week 3: Expendables 2 (August 17th)

When the engimatic Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) sends the team on what should be an easy job, Stallone and company get more than they bargained for. Jason Statham, Liam Hemsworth, Sylvester Stallone, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Scott Adkins, Terry Crews, Randy Couture and Arnold Schwarzenegger star.

MattInRC: Rather than humiliate you with pithy comebacks or cheesy jokes (like 'My money is EXPENDABLE for this release!'), lemme say that any film with these many heavy hitters plus a guy who can actually direct (sorry, Stallone that ain't you) makes for an intriguing combination. Besides, if anyone's looking for Oscar performances, you should be looking towards our Week 4 pick. Expendables 2 will be a fun ride, but performances that stir the soul will not be found here. Unless a roundhouse or the sound of heavy artillery inspires you to tears...

Week 3: Paranorman (August 17th)

A misunderstood boy learns to communicate with the dead, and takes on zombies and ghosts to save his town from invasion.

MattInRC: With so many previews for Frankenweenie pounding us during the summer season, some may forget about the little animated film that could. This one doesn't feature the Yankees-like voice talents that appear regularly in a Dreamworks, Disney, or Pixar flick. But, Laika Entertainment produced the very good Coraline, so let's hope the company can turn heads again with another winner.

4: Lawless (August 29th)

Set in Depression-era Virgina, a gang of bootleggers learn the authorities want a cut of the profits, or the runners out of the picture. Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, Shia LaBeouf, Guy Pearce star.

MattInRC: While some ensemble dramas can be snooze-fests, this one actually might surprise people. We love Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman is one of the most under-rated actors in Hollywood, and Tom Hardy needs just one more film to solidify his status. This one could be a surprise hit.

Emma Stone To Star In A Cameron Crowe Film

Sony Pictures has just closed a deal for an untitled love story that Cameron Crowe will direct in the spring, with Emma Stone starring. Crowe wrote the script, and Scott Rudin is producing.

The project is a two-hander, and that the male lead hasn’t yet been set, and that the tone is reminiscent of past Crowe films Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire. Stone just starred for the studio in The Amazing Spider-Man and completed Gangster Squad.

Prometheus Sequel Could Be On It's Way

Are your excited about this news?

The studio's big summer bet was Ridley Scott's Prometheus, June's sort-of Alien prequel. The $130 million-budgeted film grossed a solid but not spectacular $303 million globally, putting it right on the franchise bubble. Fox confirms to THR that Scott and the studio actively are pushing ahead with a follow-up (stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are signed) and are talking to new writers because Prometheus co-scribe Damon Lindelof might not be available. "Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can't rush it," says Fox president of production Emma Watts, who also has overseen the successful reboots of the X-Men and Planet of the Apes franchises. A Prometheus sequel would be released in 2014 or 2015.

THE PAPERBOY Trailer Is Delivered

Watch the just released trailer for THE PAPERBOY via Yahoo!

From Oscar® nominated director Lee Daniels (PRECIOUS) comes a provocative, sexually-charged tale of desire, ambition, prejudice and crime set in the 1960s swamplands of South Florida. Starring Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, David Oyelowo, Macy Gray, John Cusack and Academy Award® winner Nicole KidmanTHE PAPERBOY dips into the gritty human underside of a murder investigation, as a compelling cast of characters confront obsession, deception and their own dark, dark demons on the muddy road towards retribution.

It all begins in the steamy rural backwater of Moat County, Florida, where things have been done the same way for decades, yet change is bubbling beneath the surface. Boyish Jack Jansen (Efron), son of the local newspaper publisher, has just returned home after being kicked out of college, only to take the lowly job of paperboy. But that too changes when his idolized journalist brother Ward (McConaughey) comes to town from Miami on the trail of a story that could make his career.

Bringing in tow his hotshot writing partner Yardley (Oyelowo) and the alluring death-row groupie Charlotte Bless (Kidman), Ward plans to prove that an innocent man has been railroaded on his way to the electric chair. With Jack as their driver, the quartet arranges to meet Hillary Van Wetter (Cusack), the seedy alligator hunter hastily convicted of killing the local sheriff, at the prison. But what erupts between them all is a tangled web of sexual tension, mixed motives and shadowy facts that will set off not only a search for the truth but a chain reaction of passion and violence. Observing it all is Jack’s only real confidante -- the disregarded family maid Anita (Gray) – who watches in dismay as his innocence is turned inside out.

THE PAPERBOY is directed by Lee Daniels based on the novel by Pete Dexter (PARIS TROUT). The film’s producers are Hilary Shor (CHILDREN OF MEN), Daniels, Nu Image/Millennium Films’ Avi Lerner, Ed Cathell III (SECRET LIVES OF BEES, PLAYING THE FIELD) and Cassian Elwes (BLUE VALENTINE). The executive producers are Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short, John Thompson, Boaz Davidson, Mark Gill and Jan De Bont.

Jason Statham & James Franco Join Homefront

James Franco is set to join Jason Statham in Millennium Films' action-thriller "Homefront," which Gary Fleder will direct from a script by Sylvester Stallone.

Stallone will produce with Kevin King Templeton and Rene Besson, while Avi Lerner and Trevor Short will exec produce.

Story follows Phil Broker (Statham), an ex-DEA agent who moves his family to a quiet town hoping to escape his past. However, he finds the town to be overrun with violence, drug traffickers and an evil meth magnate named Gator (Franco). To save his endangered family, retribution is now the only thing Broker seeks.

"I cannot think of a better group to put this film on the big screen," said Lerner. "Sly's script is fantastic, James and Jason are remarkable actors and Gary really knows how direct this type of film. We start production at the end of September in New Orleans."

Fleder previously directed the thrillers "Runaway Jury" and "Kiss the Girls," while Stallone and Statham next co-star together in "The Expendables 2," which opens Aug. 17.

Franco will soon be seen in two Millennium pics -- "Lovelace," in which he plays Hugh Hefner, and Ariel Vroman's true crime film "The Iceman." Thesp has also wrapped Sam Raimi's Disney pic "Oz the Great and Powerful" and Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers."

Jon M. Chu To Direct Masters Of The Universe

Director Jon M. Chu is in talks to take the helm of Sony's Masters of the Universe, an adaptation of the 1980s Mattel toy line, his reps confirmed to THR. The filmmaker, whose credits include Step Up 2 and Step Up 3D as well as the documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, would take the project on as the follow-up to another adaptation of a toy line, G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

The film would be the second adaptation of the material, after Gary Goddard’s 1987 film starring Dolph Lundgren, which notably flopped at the box office. Sony Pictures and Escape Artists have attempted to launch the project several times based on a script by Alex Litvak and Mike Finch, entitled Grayskull. Escape Artists partners Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing.

Although the 1987 film brought the franchise's heroes to Earth, Masters of the Universe takes place on an alternate world called Eternia, where a prince named Adam has a sword that transforms him into the musclebound hero He-Man. The franchise premiered in 1983 with a cartoon series and an action figure line and remains a beloved property for generations of genre fans.

Chu is currently working on Justin Bieber’s concert tour and overseeing the conversion of G.I. Joe: Retaliation into 3D for its release on March 29, 2013. The film was originally scheduled for release in July, but Paramount Pictures pushed back its date

Tom Hardy's Star Trek: Nemesis Screen Test With Actual Footage

Before Tom Hardy bulked up (again) and chilled audiences as Batman's nemesis Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, the actor got to play a villainous, younger, cloned version of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis. I don't even remember this movie or his role in the film. Now you can watch his first interaction with Picard himself, played by Sir Patrick Stewart.

The newly unearthed screen test is intermingled with the actual movie's filmed scenes, so you can have a nice look at the different nuances the two British actors brought both to the screen test and then to the actual finished film.

At the time, Hardy was a green and mostly unknown actor (with a few small roles in Band of Brothers and Black Hawk Down), but Star Trek: Nemesis helped get the young British thespian some international exposure with a performance that was both tragic and chilling—even though Nemesis became a complete commercial flop.

After displaying fast and furious martial arts chops in "The Raid," Indonesian thesp Joe Taslim has been tapped by director Justin Lin to join the cast of Universal's 2013 tentpole "Fast and Furious 6."

Taslim will play the villainous role of Jah, a cold-blooded killer who uses his martial arts and parkour skills to fight the pic's protags, led by Paul Walker and Vin Diesel.

Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson and Michelle Rodriguez are set to return for the sequel, which has added new blood in the form of MMA fighter Gina Carano and villain Luke Evans.

Plot details are scant, but sources say it would involve the crew heading overseas to work on a heist job that Evans' rival crew has already staked out.

"Fast Five" helmer Lin is returning to direct from a script by Chris Morgan. Neal Moritz will produce through his Original Film banner along with Diesel and Clayton Townsend. Pic will bow over Memorial Day weekend on May 24 next year.

A Judo martial arts champ, Taslim was discovered by director Gareth Evans, who promptly cast him as one of the leads in his hit action pic "The Raid," which Sony acquired last year at Toronto and released earlier this year.
