Hawaii Five-O Season Premiere Review. Exciting Premiere Has Got Us Hooked

Hawaii Five-O Season Premiere Review
By: MattInRC

From time to time we will get reviews of TV shows that MattInRC follows.

As a rule, once I've lost interest in a television series, I hardly ever go back. Perhaps it's due to something better in the same time slot that draws me away, or a dull patch in a current show that never seems to pick up steam again. Luckily, I had forgotten to delete the declining Hawaii Five-O from my season pass DVR, so when it showed up Friday night, I decided to check it out one last time. I'm glad I did: the show was one of the most exciting premieres of the week, filled with enough plot twists, gun play, and surprises to match all of last year. We had a helicopter assault, the death of a major character (a car, actually), plenty of sweet automatic rifles, and some genuinely good character development. Our team was scattered for most of the show, then pursued by their own people, before ending things with a massive gunfight and new questions about a recurring villain.

It wasn't like Season 3 was dull, with Steve McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) about to welcome an armed assault while visiting the seriously burned Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos), who McGarrett learned had been visited earlier in the day by his badass spy mother Doris (Christine Lahti). Season 3 ended with a cliffhanger matched only by Person of Interest and Revolution, but had spent so much of its capital on an uninspiring second half of the season that fans began to desert the show. When it was announced that it was being moved to the dreaded 9PM Friday slot, it was not a good sign.

The Verdict: After watching the premiere, I have to admit that I haven't been more interested since Season 3's premiere, so I'll be rescinding my rule (temporarily) on this one. However, I'll be keeping a watchful eye for any trends on the show which signify dull, boring, or otherwise unneeded storylines are approaching. O'Loughlin and team (Scott Caan, Grace Park, and Daniel Dae Kim) have great chemistry and can be counted on for good drama, so long as the Wo Fat storyline is concluded soon and something just as appealing is put in its place. What happens after that could tell us whether Hawaii Five-O survives to a fifth season or takes a permanent vacation on the beautiful Hawaiian beaches. Give this one a shot.

Sex Tape Review: Overly Sexual, Rude, Vulgar, and Absolutely Hilarious

The raunchy Sex Tape will divide audiences and critics, but who cares? Sex Tape suggests a growing practice among loving partners: that of making a raunchy testament of their escapades for posterity. But what happens when that evidence gets seen by friends, neighbors, and even the mailman? This is the plot that pits Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) in an effort to secure every iPad gift Jay has given, his record company playlists being the envy of the recipients, but which has also inadvertently spread the video to every device. The reason for the act - termed in the movie as pulling "the full Lincoln " for its three-hour length - stems from the couple's non-existent social life, brought on by the constant demands of their children. The couple has a lot to lose: a burgeoning business relationship between Annie and Hank (Rob Lowe) could end if the iPad she's given to Hank exposes the video, and so the couple sets out to reclaim and wipe the incrim...
