Soundtrack Review: #ArrowSeason 3

Season 3's score is filled with brash tactics, sweeping epics, and incredible pay offs. Review by Matt Cummings Super heroes and their television drumbeats are undergoing one impressive chrysalis. Ill-content to simply be complimentary to a network's lineup of comedies and procedurals, comic book series have found fertile ground on the small screen with series like Arrow , The Flash , Agents of SHIELD , and others. Composer Blake Neely is helping to forge these soundscapes with big sounds for small packages, drawing the blueprint for the next generation of innovative television soundtracks. With the release of the very good Arrow Season 3 , we get all the proof we need that Neely is in full control of that movement. Produced by La-La Land Records, DC Comic and Warner Bros. Television, the 2-disc set arrives well-apportioned and filled with memorable reminders of why we love Neely's work. Already well-known for blending synthesizers, and violins with sound

Soundtrack Review: #TheFlash Season 1

The Flash Season 1 shows just how far television soundtracks have come. Review by Matt Cummings As a long-time lover of television soundtracks - no, not the awful rock collections that appear in shows like Vampire Diaries , etc - I had lamented their near total ignorance for the better part of the last two decades. True, the Bear McReary score for Battlestar Galactica was an epic reminder that television didn't have to go the cheap route. Luckily, Composer Blake Neely's submission for The Flash Season 1 is leading the triumphant charge to return television scores to their rightful place. Released by WaterTower Music, the score is a great mix of electronic and symphonic. There's two CD's here - a total of 29 tracks - so a blow-by-blow rundown would take all day. Instead, let's mention several highlights, beginning with tracks 1-5. A show always has to have a memorable theme, which is what The Fastest Man Alive/Always Late exactly does. But jus

Blu-ray Review: #DieHardNakatomiPlaza

Fox hits a "Yippee Kiyay!" with the best special edition set of 2015. Review by Matt Cummings If you've been reading us for awhile, you know of my love for special editions of trilogies, steelbooks, or 'look back' releases with special or inventive packaging. There was 2013's Avengers Phase One suitcase, 2014's ET: The Extraterrestrial Spaceship, and Blade Runner suitcase are just a few that reside under my glass. But there were few in 2015 that stood up, ready to be counted. Until now. The Die Hard Nakatomi Plaza is just such a set, a simply outstanding release that demands your attention, respect, and money. Rather than take you through a detailed analysis, allow my images tell the story of just how impressive this is. A couple of quick notes: the Plaza stands at just under 15", and the art cards do fit in the case, which means you should be able to nail just the discs. But why settle for just the discs? As you can see, the Die

Movie Review: 'Meet the Coopers'

The depressing dysfunctionality of Love the Coopers grates early and often. Review by Matt Cummings The dysfunctional family holiday film is a genre I just can't like, no matter what you do with it. Ever since it arrived in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation , I've been hesitant to accept its amalgam cast of unlikable characters, thinly-written plots, and sickeningly quick happy endings. But the newest addition - Love the Coopers - sets new lows, quickly running aground with one of the most misused casts of the year. Told through the eyes of four generations, Love the Coopers stars Diane Keaton, John Goodman, Marisa Tomei, Alan Arkin, Ed Helms, Olivia Wilde, and June Squibb as thoroughly screwed up people trying to gather one last time for the holidays before the parents Goodman and Keaton announce their divorce. The sisters hate one another, the Grandfather (Alan Arkin) tries to connect with a secret (and much younger) love who eventually goes to some

Movie Review: 'Brooklyn'

The period piece moves with a gentle grace, but it's story can't keep up. Review by Matt Cummings In Director John Crowley's period drama Brooklyn , the meager Irish woman Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) comes to America during the 1950's in search of a better life. Leaving behind the only world she's ever known, Eilis initially struggles in New York, working at a well-respected department store but feeling completely empty and homesick. Although she's set up in a boarding home with other Irish female immigrants, Eilis struggles to adjust to her new life, until she meets the Italian plumber Tony (Emory Cohen), who is immediately smitten with her. But when tragedy forces her to return home, Eilis is immediately courted by Jim (Domhnall Gleeson) and must make a difficult decision: stay and enjoy an opulent life or take a chance on Brooklyn and the love which awaits her. Based on the novel by Colm Toibin, Brooklyn is beautifully shot and well acted, with Ron
