Top Domestic Movies of 2015 - Q1 Report

Interesting lessons learned as Q1 ends up 3.1%. Story by Matt Cummings When the 2015 box office arrived to much ballyhoo, audiences stood wide-eyed at the possibilities. "Biggest year in film ever" was chanted in theaters and blogs as we stood ready for the quarter 1 wave. And while the box office in general was up, a deeper look suggests an interesting trend. Note: The Winter Season is defined as the first day after New Year's week or weekend through the Thursday before the first Friday in March. According to our friends at BoxOfficeMojo.com, Quarter 1 of 2015 $2.475 billion domestically, as compared to 2014's take of $2.4b's and 2013's $2.274b. Here's the master list, but notice the problem. We'll share it afterwards: 1. American Sniper $344,257,525 2. Fifty Shades of Grey $165,089,610 3. The SpongeBob Movie $160,393,302 4. Cinderella (2015) $153,247,557 5. Kingsman $119,975,617 6. #Tron3 Is Off The Grid

According to THR Tron 3 won't be coming to a theater near you. Disney has chosen not to move forward with a third installment in the sci-fi series, sources say. While sources say the project was never officially greenlit, earlier this year it seemed that things were moving ahead with Tron:Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski returning to direct and stars Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund reprising their roles. Prep had been started on the third film, and production was looking to shoot this fall, likely in Vancouver, British Columbia. Disney had been interested in adding Jared Leto to the cast, but an offer and negotiations had never commenced. Disney has been developing a sequel to Tron:Legacy since the movie, made for $170 million, grossed $400 million worldwide. Legacy was the sequel to the 1982 sci-fi film that took place inside a computer world known as the Grid and starred Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner. The film drew a big cult following and became a notable influenc

Soundtrack Review: Mortdecai

A disappointing array of score music profligates an otherwise funny film. Review by Matt Cummings If audiences didn't quite respond to January's comedy caper Mortdecai (ok, they frankly hated it), it might have had something to do with Actor Johnny Depp's "Here we go again" approach to the titular character that kept audiences away. While I loved the film's zaniness, I was wondering whether the soundtrack by Composers Mark Ronson and Geoff Zanelli had anything to do with that experience. After listening to it, I can say an emphatic 'no.' The problem here is that the score is more set-up music and less big riffs that help to identify the actors or push the scene further. Take something like Hong Kong : you must go nearly 3 minutes into the 4:25 track before finding anything remotely like a big theme or a connecting melody. Once you get there, it's all 60's schlock and totally fun, but the wait is almost not worth the time. Jo
