The actor has clearly been logging some serious hours in the gym You probably won't want to step into a ring with Jake Gyllenhaal after seeing the first image for his forthcoming film Southpaw . The Weinstein Company has released its first peek at the boxing drama with a promotional photo of Gyllenhaal showing off his impressive physique. Director Antoine Fuqua's film centers on a boxer who finds success with the gloves on but is having major issues in his personal life. Rachel McAdams, Rita Ora, Forest Whitaker, Naomie Harris and 50 Cent co-star. The script was written by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter. You’ve seen it (below). You have thoughts. So do we. Here are 7 things we just learned from the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, which blew up Black Friday with voom-voom pew-pew-pew glory. 1. There is a triple-bladed lightsaber.  Remember when our minds were blown by Darth Maul having a two-sided lightsaber in The Phantom Menace trailer? Not to be outdone, here comes J.J. Abrams with a triple-sided version. Note the light itself is more sparky and flame-like than the usual solid-looking shafts. Also, functionality-wise, the prongs presumably act as added protection. Finally somebody must have said, “Hey, maybe we should make a lightsaber that guards our wrists because our hands keep getting chopped off.” This also give it a medieval Game of Thrones-ian broad-sword look. 2. There’s no outer space in the teaser trailer:  Desert, lakes, forests, more desert. The entire trailer is terrestrial-based footage, which is a little weird for a movie called Star Wars. We’re not

It’s been vapourware. It’s been in various stages of development. It’s been two movies set to shoot back-to-back. It’s seen writers come and go. And, most recently, it scored a 2016 release date. But even that wasn’t enough to make 20th Century Fox officially hit the “go” button on the Independence Day sequel . Now, though, the green light is flashing and the cameras should be rolling in May. Roland Emmerich , who has long been the champion of more alien invasion action, has surprisingly not already signed a deal to direct, but given what he’s said about the film in the past months, that’s merely a formality. According to Deadline , the studio will start locking in a cast as soon as Emmerich is officially on board and it will only be a single film: the double-shot option is not going forward for now. It's finally here: the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens . It's not that long, but it will do for now. So what are you waiting for? And what are you doing reading this? Early thoughts: this looks like being the real deal, a return to the core values (practical effects! Practical droids!) and, more importantly, the feel of classic Star Wars. It's also more notable for what it doesn't show as much as it shows. So, contrary to initial rumours, we don't get a glimpse of the old stagers returning to the franchise. There's no Mark Hamill as a bearded Luke Skywalker, no Harrison Ford as Han Solo, no Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, no Chewie, no Threepio, no Artoo. What we do get is a glimpse at the new blood that will drive the film - John Boyega, the hero of the film, intriguingly wearing an Imperial Stormtrooper's outfit. S

Penguins of Madagascar makes a strong case for cute and cuddliness. If you've been reading SJF for any time period, you know my affection for the inoffensive animated comedy. Easy on the eyes for the young-ins and usually filled with pop trash zaniness for the adults, the genre has hit its stride over the past year, delivering hits like The LEGO Movie and Mr. Peabody and Sherman with cool efficiency. The Penguins of Madagascar has all the pieces for similar success, delivering the fun of the television show and emphatically placing them above their New York Zoo brethren. TV Review: Gotham “Lovecraft” By: Brandon Wolfe With roughly half of its first season now laid out, ‘Gotham’ is still struggling to get its act together. The flaws that one hoped were temporary and being worked through are now starting to look like they might be the house style. The show is all thumbs, uncertain of what it wants to be and seemingly incapable of any artfulness. It should be much better than this, yet it doesn’t seem to be on any path to redemption. Arguably the biggest problem with ‘Gotham’ is its stubborn insistence on cramming young Bruce Wayne into the works as a major character. This decision has hamstrung the show by forcing a character into a context in which he simply doesn’t make sense. ‘Gotham’ was sold as a gritty cop procedural set in a pre-Batman Gotham City.
