Universal announced at its CinemaCon presentation today that it plans to produce a Pitch Perfect sequel that would hit theaters sometime in 2015. The reveal doesn’t come as too much of a surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention. Pitch Perfect earned $112 million worldwide against a slight $17 million budget, and in the months since its theatrical run, it has kept hitting new high notes. According to Universal, the film has earned over $90 million across all home market platforms, and it currently stands as the studio’s third highest-grossing VOD title ever behind blockbusters Ted and Bridesmaids. On top of that, the Pitch Perfect soundtrack has sold over 636,000 copies and spawned a hit single — complete with its own music video – with Anna Kendrick’s “Cups.” Kay Cannon, who penned Pitch Perfect , will write the screenplay for the sequel, but no other cast or crew have been revealed as of yet. Abbie Cornish is re-teaming with her “ Seven Pyschopaths ” co-star Colin Farrell in the thriller “ Solace ,” also starring Anthony Hopkins. Afonso Poyart will direct, with filming set to start in May. Story follows an FBI agent who links up with a doctor with psychic abilities to hunt down a serial killer. It is unknown what role Cornish would play. Beau Flynn, of Flynn Picture Co., Tripp Vinson and Thomas Augsberger will produce from a script by Sean Bailey, Ted Griffin, James Vanderbilt and Peter Morgan. “ Solace ” has been in development limbo for some time (Bailey wrote the script before becoming president of production at Disney) but it now looks ready to rev up. Cornish has gradually moved into leading-lady status, and her roles in MGM’s “Robocop” reboot and Ridley Scott’s Discovery Channel miniseries “Klondike” seems to sustain that argument. Ericson Core ( Invincible ) will direct the feature film remake of the 1991 action-thriller Point Break for Alcon Entertainment, it was announced by Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. The new version of the film is set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring. The filmmakers are keeping other plot points under wraps. The Kathryn Bigelow original, starring Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze and Gary Busey , was produced by Largo Entertainment and released by Fox.
