Doug Liman has climbed aboard Everest, a Sony Pictures drama about George Mallory and his three attempts in the early 1920s to become the first man to climb the world’s highest mountain. The film, an adaptation of Jeffrey Archer’s book Paths Of Glory , has a script by Sheldon Turner. Jennifer Klein is producing. Liman has several projects percolating, including Luna, a moon mission film that Paramount Pictures and New Regency are trying to make work, as well as Warner Bros’ Dante Harper-scripted drama All You Need Is Kill. I had my worries at first thinkin’ ‘how are they going to approach this subject matter through comedy?!’ especially with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s famous R-rated brand of humor. But their friend Will Reiser (this film is based on his experiences) who wrote the script is very respectful and sensitive to the effects that cancer could have on its victims both physically and emotionally because he himself has gone through the same hell. There is only a few movies this year that give out a certain special kind of magic and 50/50 is one of them. I genuinely love this film. It’s one of the best, most heartfelt buddy comedies I’ve ever seen.. One of the best crowd-pleasing, feel-good movies of the year. Watch out for Dakota Goyo, this kid is goin’ places! What a bag of talents for such a young age. Hugh Jackman delivers his most powerful performance yet. Director Shawn Levy got himself a winner in REAL STEEL because this movie’s got energy to spare for the next century with its relatable underdog story complimented with father-son relationship that goes straight for the heart. Not to mention the robots look absolutely fascinating, the fight sequences are pulse pounding and incredible. X-Files creator Chris Carter is heading back to the small screen. After several years away from Hollywood despite heavy demand, Carter has reemerged with a female-lead mystery police thriller titled Unique . The project, which is set up at Media Rights Capital, has a supernatural element to it. He is set to write and executive produce. Carter spent nearly a decade at the helm of the David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson vehicle, which ran from 1993 to 2002. The series not only helped put host network Fox on the map but also define it as a destination for edgy, quality fare. In addition to a rich ancillary revenue that came from DVD and merchandise, the franchise spawned two feature films, 1998's The X Files and 2008' The X Files: I Want to Believe . Mortal Kombat is heading back to the big-screen. New Line is hiring the filmmakers of the popular Mortal Kombat digital series , made earlier this year by corporate sibling Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, to take on a new adaptation of the classic 1990s fighting game. The movie deal marks the end of a journey for Kevin Tancharoen , who will direct the new film. Tancharoen, a choreographer for Madonna and Britney Spears who directed the 2009 remake of Fame and more recently the Glee concert movie, directed a short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth as a proof of concept for a Kombat movie he tried to pitch. A huge fan of the video game (and knowing Hollywood wouldn’t give him a shot at the title), he enlisted Oren Uziel to write the short and hired actors such as Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan .
