John Goodman has joined the cast of the Robert Zemeckis-directed Flight , which stars Denzel Washington as an airline pilot who averts a plane crash, only to come under a cloud for possible substance abuse problems. Goodman will play a friend of the pilot who helps him come to terms with his problems. Goodman, who stars in the Michel Hazanavicius-directed silent film The Artist, is shooting the Ben Affleck-directed Argo and most recently wrapped the Stephen Daldry-directed Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which stars Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock. Superman is getting a new mom. Ayelet Zurer , the Israeli actress who starred in Angels & Demons and who played the wife of Avner (Eric Bana) in Munich, has been set to play the role of Lara Lor-Van , Superman’s Kryptonian mother, in Man of Steel . Production is underway on the Warner Bros/Legendary film. That role was originally going to be played by Julia Ormond . I was unable to find out why director Zack Snyder made the last-minute change, but I’ve confirmed that Zurer will start filming this week. Henry Cavill plays Superman, Russell Crowe plays Superman’s Kryptonian father, Jor-El , and Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Michael Shannon also star. Zurer will next be seen starring in the Lawrence Kasdan-directed Darling Companion opposite Diane Keaton, Kevin Kline and Dianne Wiest for Sony Pictures Classics. She’s repped by IFA Talent Agency. The screenwriting duo have been tapped to work on Wanted 2 for Universal, which is developing the sequel to the hit action movie starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy . The 2008 movie, directed by Timur Bekmambetov , was based on a comic mini-series by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones and centered on a disillusioned office worker who discovers his father was part of a secret society of super-human assassins. Brandt and Hass wrote the screen story and shared screenwriting credits with Chris Morgan. The movie grossed $341 worldwide, so it wasn’t long before Universal put a sequel into development. But finding a story proved harder to crack. Morgan was commissioned to work on the project back in the fall of 2008. In 2009, Evan Spiliotopoulos was brought on board before the project quietly faded away. Now Haas and Brandt will move the Wanted 2 needle forward, based on Spiliotopoulos’ work.
