BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

FilmDistrict Gets Their Hands On Red Dawn Remake, But Is It To Late?

A remake of the invasion movie " Red Dawn " — with its villains now digitally modified from Chinese to North Korean — will finally hit American shores next year. The new version of the Reagan-era classic will be released in the U.S. by independent studio FilmDistrict , according to people familiar with the matter but not authorized to discuss it publicly. FilmDistrict is finalizing a deal with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , the studio that produced the movie in 2009. In the original "Red Dawn," a group of teenagers in a Washington town battle invading Soviet forces; in the remake, the invaders were changed to Chinese. But that decision turned the film into a hot potato. After MGM emerged from bankruptcy in late 2009 and decided it wouldn’t release the movie, no other studio wanted to touch “Red Dawn” for fear of offending the government of China, a hugely important market in the increasingly global film business. As a result, the movie’s producers last winter used d

Taylor Lautner Or Robert Pattinson Who Is Hollywood's Leading Man?

So far, the Twilight glow hasn’t quite materialized for Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson outside of the blockbuster franchise, at least at the domestic box office. Over the weekend, Lautner starrer Abduction opened to $11.2 million in North America. While hardly a disaster, most box office observers thought the Lionsgate action pic—Lautner’s first solo outing--would open in the mid-teens. Abduction did appeal heavily to younger females, Lautner’s Twilight fanbase, but needed more males, the natural audience for action fare. According to exit polling, 68 percent of those going to see Abduction were females, while 56 percent were under the age of 25. Abduction wasn’t helped by poor reviews, although moviegoers seemed to like it more than critics, giving it a so-so B- CinemaScore (females under 18 gave it an A- CinemaScore). In Abduction, directed by John Singleton, Lautner plays a teenager who learns his parents aren’t who they say they are when he sees his picture on a

Disney's The Lone Ranger Is Riding Into Theaters

How that late start impacts the Dec. 21, 2012 release date remains to be seen, but Johnny Depp will get to play Tonto (Disney wouldn’t make the movie without him), and Armie Hammer will be back in as the title character. Ruth Wilson , the scene-stealing killer from Idris Elba’s British cop series Luther, is also expected back as the female lead. Disney has gotten to this point after a painful overhaul of the movie by producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski to bring to $215 million a budget the studio feared could reach $250 or more. Verbinski’s struggle has been to reach that number while retaining enough of the spectacle that made them say yes in the first place. The cutting process has included the reworking of deals for Depp, Verbinski and Bruckheimer, and trimming the production budget and the long shoot. That would enable Depp, Gore and Bruckheimer to re-team after making the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films together. The Lone Ranger is one of several

Michael Fassbender As Robocop?

Michael Fassbender is truly the man of the moment, attacking ambitious pictures of all genres, from Shame to Prometheus, X-Men: First Class to The Dangerous Method . And he’s consistently good in these movies too, making smart choices and bringing more than his sheer charisma to the screen. So, really, it’s no surprise at all that Robocop reboot director José Padilha wants Fassbender to take a look at the lead role. He’d be mad not to. Appearing on Brazillian TV channel Globo 1 to discuss the selection of his film Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within as the country’s official nomination for Oscar consideration, Padhila also talked a little about his Robocop plans. A team of Little Bleeders tell us that Padilha said something like this: I’ll film Robocop. I’m indeed writing the script, the writer is here with me in Rio, we’ve spent over the last 15 days working together, refining the script. I’ll be travelling this friday back to LA, bringing this new version to discuss with t

Amazon To Battle The iPad With New Kindle e-reader

Amazon appears poised to introduce a touch screen tablet of its own this coming holiday season, according to a new report. The New York Times says the online retailing giant is about to announce a new, full-color updating of its Kindle e-reader as early as this week. (The company has scheduled a news conference in New York City on Wednesday). And analysts see it as the biggest threat yet to Apple's dominance with the iPad . Though other technology companies have floundered with their own iPad competitive devices (Blackberry sold just 200,000 PlayBooks in three months), Amazon follows a different strategy than Apple. The latter offers content in order to sell devices, while the former sells devices in order to sell content. An analyst for Forresters calls Amazon "a nasty competitor," and another points out that the retailer will likely sell the new device for around $250. That's just half the price of the iPad. The specs are still top secret, but the Times r

Michael Lewis's Liar's Poker Headed To Warner Bros.

In the wake of the $20 million opening weekend for the film based on his Moneyball , author Michael Lewis is taking a much more active role in the what could be the next film based on one of his books. Lewis has been tapped by Warner Bros. to write a script based on Liar's Poker , his classic 1989 account of working as a bond trader at Salomon Brothers in the go-go '80s. “I’m going to spend the next two months doing that,” Lewis tells The Hollywood Reporter. Moneyball Review - In addition, John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (Crazy, Stupid, Love) have come aboard to direct the film. Bill Gerber is producing and Courtenay Valenti is overseeing the film for Warners. Lewis, the author of several nonfiction bestsellers, is a hot commodity in Hollywood following the success of The Blind Side and Moneyball. Liar's Poker, Lewis' first book, has been in development at Warners since the early 1990s. The property picked up momentum recently as Lewis’ star has risen and the eco

Moneyball Movie Review By: Rama

Moneyball Movie Review By: Rama Let's see if Rama thought Moneyball hit it out of the park or not. Enjoy his review and make sure to follow him on Facebook and Twitter . I don’t know if I’d call MONEYBALL a baseball movie because it’s more about the business or the dealings behind it and in that sense, the concept could apply to other sports. Which is great because you don’t have to grow up liking baseball to enjoy MONEYBALL, which by the way is one of the best films of 2011 in my book. Columbia Pictures, the force behind last year’s smart dialogue film, The Social Network, has done it again, obviously because Sorkin reworked the script. But the film’s comparison to The Social Network may also be a factor, on top of public’s opinion on Pitt ’s recent comment about Jen Aniston, that could hurt MONEYBALL’s chances at the box office. That said, this film is funny, it’s engaging, it’s got similar excitement and intensity that you’d usually expect to happen on wall street flo
